An interesting and generally high-end portable computer, the Toshiba Satellite A75-S125 15.4" Notebook PC delivers such welcome amenities as fast, desktop-level processing, wireless communication, double layer DVD support, and a DVD-friendly widescreen display. What's so interesting about it? Its size, for one. Notebooks with powerful Pentium 4 processors are typically a couple pounds heavier than this model. Furthermore, considering the otherwise impressive feature list, the integrated hard drive seems surprisingly small at just 40 GB. However, if you have a need for speed but you don't necessarily require huge amounts of internal storage space (don't forget that external hard drives are quite affordable these days), the Satellite A75-S125 may just fit your requirements.

Processor:
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, though these machines are usually noticeably larger and more power hungry than their less powerful counterparts. Intel's potent Mobile Pentium 4 processor forms the basis of this machine. Running at a clock speed of 3.2 GHz and featuring 1 MB of Level 2 cache for faster retrieval of recently accessed documents and files, this is one of Intel's fastest notebook CPUs. The downside is battery life; you can expect no more than a couple hours between charges. But if raw speed is more important to you than the four-plus hours computing time you can achieve with more efficient but usually slower processors, you've come to the right place.

Memory:
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM). More RAM means faster computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Satellite A75-S125 incorporates 512 MB of PC2700 333MHz RAM. This is a standard memory allotment in today's notebook world, and certainly enough for efficient multitasking.

Video:
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). This system's graphics controller is an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 IGP with 64 MB of shared video memory. The Radeon name is highly regarded in video technology, and indeed this chipset will efficiently deal with 2D graphics and do a reasonable job with simple 3D visuals such as those found in older games and entry-level 3D animation. However, a graphics chipset with "dedicated" memory that isn't forced to "share" the system's main memory is a better bet for serious gaming and 3D animation. You'd need to move to a different notebook for that.

Display:
The unit's panoramic 15.4-inch TFT widesceen display is perfect for watching DVD movies. It features Toshiba's new TruBrite technology for whiter, cleaner images, and an impressive maximum resolution of 1290 by 800 for intense detail.

Hard Disk:
The Satellite A75-S125 features 40 GB of hard disk storage space. This isn't a lot in today's notebook world where some notebooks offer in excess of 80 or 100 GB. Nevertheless, 40 GB was the norm just a year or two ago, and it's enough for a typical roster of applications and files. If you want to maintain a large library of digital photos, videos, or music, you either need to look at another Toshiba model or consider an external hard drive.

Optical Drive:
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning," so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Quality LCD Monitor.......2001-05-30

The first 15" LCD Monitor I bought from Amazon was cheaper and not a name brand. After trying it for a week and never getting it adjusted to my satisfaction, they allowed me to return it and get a different one. I went with Philips because it was a trusted brand and I found out you get what you pay for! This monitor was easy to set up and once I got it hooked up it gave me an incredible display. Spend a little more for a Philips, its worth it!

The Basics

Hard Drive: While the 60 GB IDE hard drive (4200 RPM) has become average for notebook PCs, it's quite sizeable in comparison with other comparable ultra-compact notebooks. It offers road warriors enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and productivity software.
Processor: The 1.6 GHz Pentium M (Centrino) processor is at the middle of the speed spectrum for this processor class (February, 2005). I am very pleased with the rate of delivery, quality and price of this tablet PC. My only concern is the limited Microsoft Office (94?) which was installed in it. It required a password I did not receive so, I could only use it on a trial basis before installing a copy I had previously purchased.

Toshiba Performs well.......2007-02-12

Looks like it's a keeper. Toshiba likes to mess with Wireless control to it's detriment, but other than that, the system works pretty good. Sloooww getting an IP address, but then everything works OK. Like the Tablet, but putting in text could be a little more easy, if not more intuitive.

Heavy, unreliable, quirky.......2006-10-24

I have had a Toshiba Satellite tablet PC for about 18 months. The first one had a power supply failure within 3 weeks of purchase at CompUSA. It was replaced. The tablet hot keys on the second unit never functioned correctly, the unit shut down regularly (blue screen) with an alleged video driver failure, I never got to the bottom of that. It came with insufficient memory, so I upgraded it to 1GB RAM. That improved performance. It recently stopped working again. CompUSA is refusing to repair it, although I have one of their fancy TAP extended warranties. They are saying I must have dropped it recently, which is not the case. So, no more Toshiba, no more CompUSA. I did love the tablet functionality and will buy another tablet PC, but not from Toshiba and not from CompUSA.

There are a lot of other companies who have much better products.......2006-10-14

I could not, in any way, suggest this product to anyone. First, their cusotmer support of the product is the worst I have encountered in 16 years of owning laptops. A very simple repair they are refusing to handle. Somehow the rep I talked to felt I had purposely damamged the PC. All that is wrond is that the strain relief on the power supply separated. I have now spent over 3 hours on the phone over two days and have yet to get this resolved.

There are other issues about this PC. The tablet PC features still need a faster processor to make a tablet PC replace a regular laptop. Which is a shame because I am loosing the use of the two small fingers of my left hand. So I still use the keyboard and do a lot of correcting.

The placement of the mic is such that your going to get an earsplitting squeal if you try to use it on your lap. You have to turn off the volume completely. So you can't get any sound feedback. I am expecting the hinge to break any day. Its real flimsy. Something you realize after using it for awhile. After I purchased it I called in to get their extended warranty to cover breakage. I was told I could not get it as I have allready had the PC in my possesion. I would have had to purchase that kind of extended coverage when I purchased the laptop. Several months later the strain relief end of the power supply cracked and sometimes shorts. I have had 4 laptops over the last 16 years and never had this kind of problem.

I will never buy another Toshiba product. Period. Their support is non-existant. I am still on hold after being told to call back for customer relations.

Pros: extremely high cost-effectiveness (got a display model for $550 from CompUSA), sturdy, crystal clear sound with SRS, good Human-Computer Interface design.

Cons: battery life way too short for me (3 hours at most), a little bit heavy, no DVD+/-R writer, 512MB system memory (install another 512MB or 1GB is a must because video card uses system memory as its virtual memory)

Overall: Toshiba brand Tablet PC is still one of the best in the market. Trustworthy.

Good Solid Cordless Phone.......2004-12-22

I was very surprised to see ony two stars for this phone. I have had one for over two years and this phone has been a good solid performer. I am a self-proclaimed gadget freak and have tried many different cordless phone brands. I think that Panasonic and Sony make the best phone and I think that Panasonic, while the cheaper of the two generally makes better equipment. With two small kids ours has been dropped and moved multiple times and has never given us trouble. It has provided better clarity than my more expensive Sony phones as well. I will admit that the features that are jammed into this phone are a bit over the top but this is a very useful phone. In fact, I'm on the site to purchase one for my mom. Happy Holiday!

Replace the Panasonic Battery with a non-Panasonic battery.......2004-03-03

In my earlier review, I spoke of having the now infamous Panasonic battery problem. Since then I took the advice offered by one of the other reviewers of this product. They replaced their poor Panasonic battery with a non-Panasonic battery and have seemingly fixed their problems.

So I headed to the nearest Radio Shack to buy one of their Radio Shack brand phone batteries and thus far it's working great. The battery I purchased was catalog number 23-270 ($14 and change after tax) and it's a Radio Shack 3.6V/1200mAh NiMH Battery. The battery itself is a little smaller than the Panasonic battery, but still works like a charm.

So if you're having a problem with the battery, replace it with a non-Panasonic battery and you should be fine. I thank the previous poster who offered up the idea originally. For whatever reason, I never thought to try an off-brand battery. I hope this helps those who ran into this problem like myself.

my first panasonic 2563 works great...this 2583 won't hold a charge for more than 10 minutes talk time...and it's only two weeks old!!!!!!!!!!customer service offered to replace it with a refurbished model when all i'm looking for is a new battery...i paid top dollar so that i could trade it in two weeks later for a refurbished unit...........i'm very dissapointed with them...never another panasonic.

I have owned this phone for over a year, and after replacing the original NiCd Panasonic battery with a GE 1300 mAh NiMH battery (TL965600187), the battery performance has been exceptional. The features of this phone are excellent and the performance has been great. However, recently we have been unable to use it at all due to large amounts of 2.4GHz interference in our home. Beware of too many wireless devices in your area. The 2.4GHz spectrum is the wild west. Other than that, this phone is great!!

I wish I had taken heed to the warnings before I purchased this phone in Feb. 2003... The battery life is the worst I've EVER seen! You probably get a good 10 mins. of talk time per charge...

PLEASE DON'T BUY IT!!!!
