Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the SLV-D350P can deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Other DVD functions include bookmarking, picture zoom, parental lock, and a screen saver.

The VCR section offers one-month, eight-event advance programming to commercial skip. Your camcorder or gaming console plugs right into the front panel for hassle-free connections. Its four-head design ensures smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, and with hi-fi sound the unit records and plays back stereo audio tracks. Its 19-micron heads deliver the clearest possible picture when recording or viewing in EP (extended-play) mode.

Commercial skip makes it easier than ever to zip past commercials and unwanted "coming attractions," jumping forward 30 seconds for every press of the commercial-skip button.

Connections with combo units are often inconvenient, forcing you to use separate video hookups for each section (DVD, VCR), a problem for older TVs. This player has it figured out: a single RF or composite-video connection to a television will display either the DVD or the VCR signal, depending on which format you're viewing. If you want to view DVDs in S-video or in component-video (either interlaced or progressive-scan), you will need to use two inputs, as the device will not upconvert the signal from the VCR to either of those higher-resolution formats. Not to worry, though: any component- or S-video-equipped TV will offer sufficient inputs for both of the SLV-D350P's formats.

It's a different arrangement for audio: you can listen through a single set of stereo analog-audio cables for each component (one is supplied), or--if you want to enjoy DVDs in discrete 5.1-channel surround sound--you can send the DVD's audio to a compatible audio/video receiver and a multichannel speaker system through a digital-audio interconnect (either optical or coaxial, not supplied). The unit also comes with an RF cable that will transmit DVD/VHS audio and video to your TV, a multilingual onscreen display (English, Spanish, French), and a multibrand TV/DVD/VCR remote control.

Quit working after two years........2007-09-26

For nearly two years, this product served us well. Actually, we didn't use it all that much -- on average we would watch a DVD every 2-3 weeks. A few months ago, it would occasionally fail to recognize a DVD, or would otherwise freeze. I used a DVD cleaner, which I think "maybe" helped one evening, as we were able to get through a movie with just one instance of freezing. Not worth the frustration anymore, so tonight I am online shopping for a new device. I won't buy this model again. P.S., When it worked, it worked quite well -- good picture, easy remote, conveniently placed output ports. Not a bad product if you get a good price, but I think I could have done better.

I have seen so many negative reviews for this item, but I have to say that we have owned this unit for almost 4 years now and it still works very nicely, both DVD and VCR. We purchased our unit at the Sony Outlet just south of Boston,MA. My two-year old daughter watches her favorite videos and DVD's repetitively throughout the day (sometimes to the point where I am ready to throw them all out the window..haha)and we haven't had any problems whatsoever.

Don't Buy It.......2007-03-12

Had very short time - DVD just quit loading DVD's, getting an error message - tried compressed air and disk cleaner (they cost me $30) - called Sony - since out of warranty, they wanted $133 (includes shipping) to send me a refur unit - forget it. No more Sony for me.

Poor Quality for Sony.......2007-03-01

I have this unit for 2 years and it has been barely adequate but not great like most Sony products. First, the buttons on the remote are still confusing to use after all of this time. Second the DVD will freeze up/skip on disks with a lot of compression or sound effects. Third, the remote doesn't work across the room unless you hold your mouth and wrist just right. Fourth, it has to think a few seconds about what to do when you push a remote button which makes you wonder if you were holding your mouth right. Finally, the last few months it has been going completely wacko on me by occasionally changing the time to some time in 2097, it loses or changes some of the recording times, and sometimes just forgets to come on at at its programmed time. I have always shopped Sony first but now I am starting to look elsewhere. It is time for a change. I would only recommend this to someone that I wanted to suffer at the hands of inferior engineering.

It Works!.......2007-09-24

The bottom line is that it works great! I am using it without the amplifier. It works like FM (F...... Magic). Actually I set up my stereo in my first house in which my boom box worked great for radio reception. I could not get a good FM station no matter what I did. I even set up my old stereo receiver from back in the 80's. It did not get a good signal either. I went to Radio Shack and a few of the high end stereo stores in my area. I got the same story I got a few years ago when I first set up the same receiver in my apartment but got bad reception. The "Tweeter" folks said "well they just don't put the money into the FM portion of the tuners." This seemed plausible but since my old receive didn't get good reception either, and my boom box did, I wasn't satisfied. They were nice enough to try and sell me and XM radio receiver! I got on the internet and did some research. There really wasn't a good clear answer but I was lead to believe it had to do with the selectivity of the tuner. I guess a boom box tuner is not very selective but will get an OK signal just about anywhere. But a stereo receive apparently has high selectivity to get a better signal. The down side is that if it doesn't get a good signal, you basically get nothing. My neighbor had one of these Terk type sticks that said Radio Shack on it and her receiver worked great. This is interesting since Radio Shack does not carry the product any more, and also interesting because the Radio Shack guy told me that the FM boosters almost never worked. I tried one and he was correct. I was soooooooo happy to get my FM receiver working with the Terk antenna that I got interested in HD radio. I bought the Sangean product and it worked fine except for the bright blue screen. Where is the button to turn that off. Well the Terk antenna almost eliminated the need for the tuner to default to regular FM. That was one of the downers that I read about on the internet. Although under impressed with HD, I will keep it to get good AM reception. Don't miss understand, HD does work great but maybe I just have to get used to it. I wasn't a purist that had a problem with CD sound over albums when CD's first came out. Maybe I am just used to the fuller midrange sounds from the way standard FM is mixed for transmission. I used the Terk AM 1000 antenna with the HD receive as well. The Terk AM antenna made the regular AM radio work great all by itself. But just not as clear as HD AM. For talk radio HD AM is like the guy is sitting right there in the room. It was amazing to find that HD AM gets turned off at night. It turns out that the signal is so strong that at night it travels farther and interferes with HD AM in nearby towns. Ya would have thought the big brains would have figured that one out before they approved and set up the system "ALL AROUND THE COUNTRY." A big round of Duhhhhhhhh! for the designers please!

TERK FM-50 not worth the money.......2007-09-18

Buy the $5.00 Dipole flat twin wire antenna at Radio Shack, it does just as good a job.

Don't be bamboozled.......2007-07-16

Installation and use of this FM antenna actually degraded the reception of my favorite NPR station, which is a low-powered broadcast from a local university. The antenna pulls in radio stations from distant cities that broadcast on the same frequency as my local favorite just fine, but the result is an unsatisfactory, irritating, garbled mix of at least three radio signals from my speakers. The windshield antenna on my car, when parked in the driveway outside, never fails to pick up this favorite station perfectly clearly in comparison. I got the best results just connecting my radio with the 75 ohm to 300 ohm converter jack included with the antenna and leaving the antenna and its coax cable out of the picture altogether. I could have bought that component at the local Radio Hut for peanuts.

A very good FM internal/external powered antenna........2007-07-05

This is the first antenna that worked properly with my Denon receiver. It was a pitty to have an excelent receiver and not being able to use the tuner. I also bought the unpowered terk am antenna which also worked very well!

I'm very pleased with this product. We have terrible am & fm reception where we are in northwest CT.. I had an older model powered Terk antenna and it did nothing.. But once we got this antenna installed we're getting all kinds of stations we've never been able to pick up before.. Highly recommended..!
