With driver software that makes the scanning process easy and a USB interface that makes setup simple, the Umax Astra 2000U offers hassle-free scanning. This scanner also includes a comprehensive software bundle for editing and managing your images.

To set up the Astra 2000U, we followed the included quick-start guide. We connected the USB cable from our PC to the scanner and the AC adapter cable from the scanner to the outlet, dropped in the CD-ROM, and followed the Umax setup wizard. The software setup process, although automated, was lengthy, taking about 15 minutes.

To test the Astra 2000, we started an imaging application on our PC and used its Scan command to scan a magazine photo. The Umax VistaScan driver software started automatically and, after a short delay while the lamp warmed up, showed us a preview scan. (VistaScan consistently waited for the scanner's lamp to warm up even after the lamp was already warm.) VistaScan has Beginner and Advanced buttons at the top of its window; the Beginner screen includes icons for color photos, printed material, text, line art, and Web images. We selected the working area on our preview scan and clicked the Color Photo icon for a final 300-dpi scan, which took 45 seconds. VistaScan automatically exported the image to our graphics application. The image had an unsightly moiré pattern, so we repeated the scan using a magazine descreening option. The new scan took 110 seconds and showed a significant improvement. A third scan at 600 dpi took 125 seconds but looked only marginally better than the first scan.

To test optical character recognition (OCR) abilities, we scanned a single page that contained two columns of text plus some line art. The scan took about 50 seconds, including OCR translation. Caere's OCR software ignored the line art and created a two-page document with a single column of text, which it then exported to Microsoft Word. The two-page formatting was unexpected, but the interpreted text was correct and the OCR software did a decent (though not perfect) job of recognizing fonts. You'll want to explore the well-chosen bundled applications, which are designed more for home use than for business.

Not compatible with Windows XP.......2006-02-02

I got this scanner as a gift a few years ago, and it served my purposes then when my computer's operating system was Windows 98. It did a decent job scanning my pictures and I was satisfied with it. Since then I have gotten a new computer with Windows XP, but the Umax Astra 2000U isn't compatible with it. Windows XP isn't able to locate the TWAIN driver, it keeps saying there are missing dll's, trouble with the OCR...plus a lot of other things. I'm not a technical person, so I really couldn't tell you exactly what else was missing or whatever. You can get updated software for these problems, but only if you're willing to shell out money for a CD-ROM or download it from a link on their site. Either way it'll cost you. So even though I won't be throwing it out, I will certainly be shopping around for a better quality scanner that is compatible with XP. This one, I'll give it away to someone who is still using 98 SE, 98 or anything below it, but I doubt if I'll be able to find anyone who still does.

Planned obsolecence.......2005-04-03

The UMAX 2000U scanner itself is adequate, like so many scanners out there, and you'd expect this major name would offer better support. Made in 1999, it lacks the speed or image handling capabilities of its current competition. Features in, say, the current Epson models (which include smart-scanning an image, so you don't have to crop) are absent here.

Unfortunately, a scanner is often no better than its software, and UMAX has left Mac OS X users out in the dark. This scanner only works with Windows and OS 9; UMAX refuses to release a software update for Mac OS X. Moreover, apps like the esteemed Silverfast -- meant to fill in the software gap -- only make drivers for OS 9.

In effect, by purchasing a UMAX scanner, you risk signing up for a product that will require you to buy new hardware or software down the line. Even its OS 9 software suffered from performance glitches, like impaired scanning with the free software updates. I've been forced to upgrade (but not to a UMAX product; I've learned my lesson). That's the reason so many of these are available on internet auctions and the like.

Given its archaic performance even under Mac OS 9, you have to decide for yourself whether it's a good investment to get a product with impaired short and long-term usabiliy.

do not buy umax products... it is a total waste of money.
most of the time the drivers and software provided by the company does not work with the operating system you are using. in order for it to work properly you must go to their web site and download a patch that supposed to fix the problem but instead the patch conflicts with other softeware such as camera software or even the operating system (one more thing the drivers and patches at their website are not free).
I wrote to umax and they have never responded to any of the emails i have sent to them. I decided to call the support center and I was refered back to the website to download another patch. (very bad customer support)

Works for a Little While.......2007-08-02

I honestly don't know what to think of microcassette recorders. You figure Sony has to produce a good one; after all, it's Sony. Well, not necessarily. I bought one of these because I do occasional taped interviews. It seemed to work well and always got the attention of the people I interviewed. But alas, it lasted for only about three months, then it stopped recording. It soon after stopped playing, as well. No one abused it, dropped it or subjected it to any jolts. It just stopped working...which is a shame because this recorder was convenient and came with that spongy thing around the mic which cut down on wind noise.

This is about the third (and last) Sony I'm going to try. I think I'll try Olympus next.

Not so great as you'd think.......2002-11-01

I thought this would be the end-all, be-all solution to my microcassette needs, which include field recordings, music ideas, dictation and lecture. It's not...I tried three models, thinking each time it was just a bad model, but each one had an enourmous amount of flutter on playback, as if everything recorded was being twanged with a whammy bar. Too large and bulky for standard dictation needs as well, you can do better for dication with a smaller one.

A little better than the average recorder.......2002-01-26

In the hunt for something to help me with my college studies, I decided to grab this particular microcassette recorder/player to tape my instructors' class lectures. So far, I've found it to be a pretty good study aid. Although the recording quality still isn't as top-notch as I'd hoped it'd be, it's still a bit better than many mid-to-lower-end recorders I've used and tried out.

The lecture setting is good if you're in a class where the instructor just gives his spiel, and doesn't field that many student questions. Unfortunately, this setting features a bit more background white noise than the other two modes, so it's best to have this device within a close proximity to the subject doing the lecturing, about seven feet or less. It's also best to have a clear line-of-sight from the microphone to the speaker, without any obstructions in the way.

I've found the meeting setting to be the best for classes where student views and participation is encouraged. It doesn't have quite as much background noise as the lecture setting, but it also doesn't quite have the recording range, either. I try to get the player about five feet away or closer from the instructor when I set it to the meeting mode.

The dictation setting's perfect for those times I've got a few thoughts and words off the top of my head regarding a product offered on Amazon I'm going to review (like this one, f'rinstance). It's an especially good thing to have when you come up with a thought or idea, and you want to record it before it disappears on you. You know, like when you walk to another room in your house to get a particular thing, but when you get there, you've forgotten the reason why you went there in the first place. This setting offers the least background noise, but unfortunately it also has the shortest recording range, which doesn't make it a very good mode for recording my class instructors' lectures. But for some reason it records my voice a bit deeper than it actually is. I listen to the playback of my spoken thoughts, and I end up sounding a little like Mister Sulu from classic Star Trek. Oh my!

PROS:
I've discovered that the playback is a bit clearer sounding if you listen to it through earphones. I would, however, recommend you listen to it through a comfy pair of headphones, rather than the earbud that's included with the machine. You can even listen to whatever you're recording through the player itself as it's taping, and you'll have some idea of what the tape will end up sounding like, background noise and all. Also, don't put the earbud too close to the mike, or you'll cause some uncomfortably high-pitched feedback!

I'm always losing the battery covers to my little electronic gadgets, so I was happy to see that the battery cover slides open, and stays attached to the player.

The foam wind guard seen in the product picture is an attachment that can be removed or added if needed or desired. I found this add-on a bit funny-looking, and I'm happy to see that it's not permanently mounted to the player.

CONS:
I'm not too hip with the cue/review (aka fast-forward/rewind) feature. Both selections are on either end of a three-way slide switch, rather than push-down buttons like the play, record, and stop/eject buttons. Also, when the tape reaches the end (or beginning), the switch doesn't automatically click off; you've got to slide it to `off' yourself.

I've also discovered that the voice-only recording feature isn't as sensitive as it should be. It doesn't need the subject to be very loud when it's activated and recording, but a fairly high decibel level is required for the VOR to re-activate and resume taping. Unfortunately, I've found this to be the case with every other minitaper that has this feature, so it's not like this particular model is a unique case.

A Con that became sort of a Pro:
I haven't found the fast-playback feature to be all that useful. It plays back my lecture recordings a bit too quickly for me to comprehend what's being said. It does have one good point, though: if you want to fast-forward or rewind your tape a little faster, click the fast-playback switch on (along with the 2.4 cm tape speed setting) and it'll get to the end or beginning a bit sooner than with the rewind/review switch by itself.

With the LED voice meter, battery meter, removable wind filter, counter, and a bipod you usually find on machine guns, you're lucky that you're not paying more than the price listed above. I used mine to record European History notes and I had no problem understanding my teacher. The built-in speaker has a good maximum volume so you won't have to hold it to your ear. I really liked how far the microphone was kept away from the recording components-your regular recorders have the microphone right next to the motors (which can cause noise).

My requirements for a memory card are few and simple -- low price and reliability. The price was right, cheapest on amazon.com. And the MMC card worked the first time I installed it. I'm very happy with it. Make sure to check the compatible systems on their Web site...

I bought a SanDisk card first thinking that the quality brand name would guarantee compatibility. But it did not work with my Intel Audio Player 3000. Intel says it's SanDisk's error and SanDisk says it's Intel's problem. That leaves consumers caught in the middle. So I returned mine and bought the Simple Tech MMC card and it works like a charm!
