Amazon.com Product Description
Sony's affordable and versatile STR-DE898 accommodates everything from the latest surround sound movie formats to cutting-edge high-resolution audio sources. The audio/video receiver delivers 100 watts per channel across seven main channels (left, right, center, left/right mid surround, and left/right rear surround) and has a dedicated subwoofer output for an eighth (the ".1" low-frequency effects channel).
Take a closer look at the STR-DE898's connections. You can also view the unit's front panel in detail. |
You get everything from Dolby Digital EX and DTS ES/Neo:6/96:24 surround decoding to Dolby Pro Logic II and IIx processing (creating up to 7.1 channels from 2). A set of 5.1/7.1-channel analog inputs handle high-resolution music mixed for surround sound from media formats like Super Audio CD (SACD) and DVD-Audio.
You get conveniences, too, like multiroom (Zone 2) outputs with independent source switching, so you can listen to a DVD in the living room while someone else is listening to a CD in the kitchen. (The Zone 2 output requires an additional amplifier or integrated amp in your Zone 2, as well as additional speakers.) The supplied Remote Commander remote control comes preprogrammed for a range of devices, and it also learns new commands and has the ability to perform limited macro commands.
Take a closer look at the STR-DE898's remote control. |
The receiver includes an FM/AM tuner with 30 station presets (20 FM, 10 AM) and a host of video inputs--five composite-video, three S-video, and two HD-bandwidth component-video--to simplify switching between components and your television. Component-video up-conversion from composite- and S-video sources improves upon the quality of your video inputs while simplifying connections with your component-video-capable television. Further, the receiver's actual component-video inputs accommodate wide-bandwidth (80 MHz) high-definition signals and work well with 480p signals such as those from progressive-scan DVD players.
A set of front-panel audio/video inputs includes an optical digital-audio input and facilitates spontaneous hookups with camcorders, gaming consoles, MP3 players, and minidisc player/recorders.
There's even a phono input for your once or future turntable--yes, they still make 'em, and yes, your vinyl will sound as good or better than ever. The unit's three stereo and one set of multichannel analog audio inputs simplify hookup of, for instance, a cassette deck, a VCR, and a high-resolution audio device that decodes formats like SACD and DVD-Audio. A total of six assignable digital-audio inputs (four optical and two coaxial) accept bitstream feeds from DVD players, CD players, and other digital devices, while a single optical digital-audio out channels sound to a CD or minidisc recorder.
Digital Cinema Sound System is a group of exclusive Sony algorithms (the receiver offers 13 total) that represent a total rethinking of home theater sound based on careful measurements of movie-production dubbing stages in Hollywood. Cinema Studio EX modes offer greater apparent distance from listener to screen and a full array of 10 additional virtual surround speakers.
Sound Field Link applies the last-selected sound field to an input whenever you select the input. For example, if you select STADIUM for the CD input, change to a different input, then return to CD, the receiver will automatically apply the STADIUM sound field.
Other features include a pair of switched rear-panel AC power outlets for additional components, a gold-plated .25-inch headphone jack, bass and treble tone controls, and discrete circuit devices for the best possible sound from the receiver's amplifiers.
What's in the Box
STR-DE898 receiver, remote control, two AA batteries, FM wire antenna, AM loop antenna, and instruction manual.

Worked better with a new subwoofer.......2006-05-09
I collected a hodgepodge of speakers to set up a home theatre in my den 21' x 17'. I collected 3 of the double Bose cubes (from eBay) for center and surround and planned to use my old large Koss speakers for left and right and to handle bass sound.
The feature that sold me was that you could designate the speakers as "large" or "small" during setup, so that if set to "large" the receiver sent the bass signal to them - so I wouldn't need a subwoofer...maybe. (It may be that all A/V receivers have this feature - I'm a novice.)
For music listening, particular in the "multi-stereo" setting, the sound was good. You could use the so-called equilizer to push up the bass and the large speakers reproduced the sound nicely. However in the movie modes the equilizer does not work. In each of the movie modes you get whatever equalization Sony wants you to get. I was quite disappointed to not have that movie "feel it in your chest" kind of sound, even at high volume.
So... I spent another $149 at Amazon and bought one of the 400 watt 10 inch subwoofers by Athena (w free shipping!) and added that to the subwoofer output. Nice. John Williams' music (Spielburg movies) never sounded better! The large front speakers still provide rich full sound and the subwoofer handles the lowest shake the room frequencies.
I noticed another review mentioned that they were not pleased with the bass output. I think the bottom line is that if the receiver has an output to a "powered" subwoofer...they expect you to use it.
The sound for both music and movies is now quite outstanding. By the way, the Bose cubes (bought on eBay) provide REALLY nice surround and center sound. But NO WAY would I pay retail for those.
Additionally, the Sony receiver seems to have more inputs than others in this price range (I paid $269 from Amazon w free shipping). I wanted a turntable input and multi type inputs for my older decks and and for future super audio decks.
Perhaps one of the nicest things is with this Sony A/V receiver running 6 speakers (including the sub) is that you can hear ALL of the nuances of music even when set a low volume levels. You can still carry on conversations in the room.
better than that..........2006-05-05
I own this little puppy, and I'm delighted with it. I'll disagree with with DB Brown, below, by noting two things:
1) Pioneer "colors" the sound. Some folks like it; some don't. I'm in the latter category.
2) Mr. Brown wrote exactly the same, word-for-word, review for three different Sony products (click on his "see all reviews") so I'm lead to believe that his review of this product is based on some kind of problem he has with Sony, and not the product.
Sony Slips.......2006-04-08
The price looked right, but as others have mentioned this receiver has:
*a poor layout for inputs,
*a terrible manual,
*a difficult remote,
Sony is coasting on their name with this one.
In addition, after a period of full, normal operation the unit began to go into "Protect" mode... there was little information available (not in the manual), so I began troubleshooting, as recommended in some online forums, by removing all connections - and found that the unit still entered "Protect" mode with nothing else (components, speakers, etc.) connected... power on... protect mode. Very frustrating to have no information from Sony.
This "Protect" issue taken with the other afforementioned and unrelated design and documentation faults led me to return the unit and go in a different direction.
I spent a little more and purchased a Pioneer VSX-1015TXK; I have been much happier with the Pioneer unit. I also considered the Harman Kardon AVR 240, but this Pioneer has proved to be a winner. I recommend you stay away from Sony until they get it right.
This is a bang-for-your-buck receiver.......2006-04-07
I bought this in November '05 so I've had a bit of time to get familiar with the product. Overall this is a great receiver for someone looking for the most bang for the buck. The next higher in this series (DE998 I think) has practically the exact same features, maybe 10 watts more per channel, and so in my opinion was not worth the difference in price with this version.
Setup was annoying (but not impossible). You have to push buttons and turn the setup knob all the while reading the tiny LCD display. Several times during setup I would get to the desired setting, read more from the manual, and by the time I got back to the unit the setup mode had disappeared. Of course this awkwardness disappears as you become more familiar with the machine. On-screen programming and setup is one of the features that was not included with this machine -- but remember how much you paid! The remote is very annoying with small buttons and confusing setup instructions. I have programmed it to control my DVD player, TV, cable box and VCR. Once in a while it "forgets" how to talk to the cable box for some reason, or gets confused as to which component (e.g., cable box or DVD player) it is talking to. This doesn't happen often but it has happened two or three times.
Fortunately setup does not last forever and this is not the exercise you will be doing on the machine on a daily basis. Also, most of the time the remote correctly remembers which component it is supposed to be talking to.
That being said, the sound quality is fantastic! This machine will shake the walls with sound if you turn it up far enough. I do not normally listen to my music at this deafening of a volume most of the time but if I am in a real headbanger of a mood it can happen. When using the receiver at very high volumes it will get HOT, not just warm. Keep this in mind when you place the unit, as it has alot of vents on the top of the unit. The unit will convert composite inputs to s-video output, which was not clear from reading the manual. I bought this along with the Athena 15345 Point 5 MKII System Home Theater Speaker Package and the AudioSource PSW100 10 Inch Powered Subwoofer. This fills the livingroom with sound quite nicely. Also for those of us who still have turntables, you can hook yours up to this machine -- a feature lacking in most of the other units I considered.
If I had thousands of dollars at my disposal and was looking for the absolute best receiver I would of course get something else. Although a less-than-perfect setup routine and remote, this unit produces exceptional sound for an acceptable price and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great sounding receiver at an affordable price.
Great sound for the investment!.......2006-04-06
When I first considered upgrading my 2-channel Sony stereo system to a home theater unit, I read all of the reviews on the Amazon and Crutchfield Web sites concerning the various major brands and particularly the Sony STR-DExxx series. I must admit, I was a bit concerned by some of the more negative comments concerning the Sony; however, I have always enjoyed and had good luck with the Sony stereo products that I have had in the past.
Though I have, in the past, enjoyed having equalizers on my previous 2-channel systems-- I have gotten over that after purchasing the Sony STR-DE898 and experimenting with its features and functions. Adjusting the sound on a surround system having 5+ channels would be a bit more complicated because you would nedd to adjust low, mid, and high levels for each channel (not a cost-effective feature for such low and mid-priced systems for manufacturers to provide).
Besides, much of the adjusting that I make relates more to the medium that I want to view or listen to; therefore, selecting the proper Dolby / Pro Logic settings for the medium seems more important to me now. And, in that regard, the 898 makes it simple because you can let it automatically adjust to the encoding on the medium.
Other brand products have more features for the price, but in the 898 I have the features that important to me and a lower Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) than the other brands mentioned in reviews I have read. I use my 898 primarily for listening to classical and jazz CDs and viewing movie and concert DVDs-- a strength of the Sony STR-DE systems, given Sony's presence in the movie production industry.
Currently, I use the S-video connection to my tv, and have my DVD player and cable box connected to the 898. The S-video provides what I feel is excellent quality; though I will likely switch to component video once I upgrade my tv. In the past, I was not very satisfied with the sound from cable programming; now I realize what I had been missing now that I have a home theater system and the ability to enjoy multiple channels of quality sound.
I agree that the user booklet isn't well-written, but it has been useful as a source of reference when I need it-- otherwise, setting up and operating the 898 was fairly simple, especially if you have had experience with previous Sony stereo products.
I sincerely believe that if you are looking for great sound and enjoy watching movie and concert DVDs, the Sony STR-DE898 is an excellent choice as a home theater system. And, it has more than enough connections on its rear panel to attach almost any audio-visual component that interests you.

Customer Reviews:
Definitely one of the best cameras I've ever owned.......2007-08-25
1. I know it really doesn't make much sense to write a review on a camera that has been discontinued for many years, but I just wanted to document that this camera is still one of the best cameras I've ever owned / used. I continue to use it as my primary camera (mainly for snap shots)--> and it just produces excellent shots; both in JPEG and RAW (I mainly shoot RAW). The wide angle and macro lens are also excellent.
2. The main cons are that of:
a. very very very slow RAW write times.
b. ... I think that's my only beef.
3. It's sad that essentially most camera companies have abandoned RAW in their compact cameras (current exception Panasonic and Olympus... and I guess Fuji E900). However, I have renewed hope with the recent announcement that the Canon G9 will again have RAW capabilities. It would be even greater news if Sony came out with a "V4".
4. Main point: if you want a semi-compact camera that'll deliver amazing results and can actually find one of these, you definitely will not be dissapointed. Kudos to Sony for producing this gem.
Best Camera I've owned!.......2006-09-28
This camera is phenomenal and definitely the best camera I've owned. I've had the camera now for about 3 years and it still amazes me with the quality and clarity of photos I get from it. I had a Canon Powershot prior and wish I had this Sony DSCV3 instead. The fact that the Sony DSCV3 accepts both the Memory Stick and Compact Flash (and yes both in the camera at the same time) made it easy moving from the Canon which was Compact Flash only.
There are so many settings capable on this camera as well as the scene modes, its hard to take a bad picture. Even with low light situations the hologram projection makes capturing your photo easy. Some situations definitely benefit from having the external flash unit available.
I also love the Multi Burst and Speed Burst modes of the Sony DSCV3. These settings allow you to take several continuos shots in succession, typically for moving objects. It works great, does take some getting use to, and the recording time seams a little long at times. This recording time being the main thing it takes practice to get use to.
I also have used the video capture capabilites quite a bit on various vacation trips and am very pleased with the results. Again, this is where the dual cards in the camera at the same time comes in handy, you can capture video to the Memory Stick card and capture your photos to the Compact Flash card. Very simple to do and provides for a lot of storage space.
I did not like the Picture Package software that came with the camera, but I found a couple software programs I do like a lot, Corel's Photo Album 6 Deluxe is great for downloading the photos and videos from your camera as well as orgainizing them and most importantly, backing them up to an external hard drive and DVDs. I also have used the Corel Paint Shop product for editing my photos, one of the easiest to use that I've found. However, with the Sony DSCV3 I find the biggest thing I correct on my photos is the red eye. Even though it has the red eye reduction settings, you still get some red eye, depending on whether or not the people you are shooting are looking right at the camera lens or not.
I'll probably have this camera for some time to come. The one I will look at next will be the Sony Alpha. Loving their cameras!
Is this camera ever sweet.......2006-03-28
It has dual memory slots for compact flash and ...SD i think is the other one. It has no memory on it's own, so you do need to get one. The battery life is pretty good. It plugs into the wall to recharge, so no more running down to the store for a pack of AA's
The photo quality is very good, even at just 3 MP. I recommend using it with a tripod whenever possible, specially in low light situations.
And the focus is kinda clumsy, but still a great digital camera.
Fast compact and sharp.......2006-02-27
This is my 2nd digital camera and after a month I am very pleased. It is the fastest for its category and it still fits in a coat pocket. Yet it has many advanced features you don't find on a small camera. If you are shooting wildlife, action or small kids, nothing beats a camera that starts fast and responds quickly to shutter release. The add on lense feature is also well thought out and since you have a hot shoe you don't have to worry about the small flash on the camera being hidden by the add on flash. Two types of memory card allows you to use one for stills and one for video or backup stills. Good design and lightweight
nice camera, especially for the price.......2006-01-04
I purchased 3 cheap cameras ($20, $99, $150) before learning my lesson. I did quite a bit of research (mainly looking at reviews) before I selected the DSC-V3. My reasons for choosing it were the excellent consumer and expert reviews, the price, and the image quality.
I found the camera was not only easy to use, but produced great pictures. You can use either Memory Stick or CompactFlash memory cards. Comes with a lithium battery and has good battery life as well as decent recharging time.
The camera doesn't come with a memory card, which is kind of a pain, and if you're looking for one of those teeny pocket-size digital cameras, this is really not the camera for you. I personally like the larger size, but maybe that's because it makes it feel fancy and expensive.
Overall, I recommend this camera if you're looking for something that can give you really nice pictures without a lot of hassle.
Pros- 2 types of memory storage, image quality, large LCD
Cons- no memory card included, size/weight

[DH142883] TI 73 GRAPHICS TEACHER PK-BLUE [TI-73]
Amazon.com Review
The TI-73 is a great compromise for those in the market for a full-featured scientific calculator who don't want to spend a lot of money. The only real problem is that the superior TI-83+ is now available for about the same price, but if you have your mind set on this model, it certainly won't disappoint.
The highlight of the TI-73 is its large display, which shows the history of your calculations, depicts graphs and charts, and has a high enough resolution to simultaneously display several rows of stacked fractions. The stacked-fraction feature is a boon for struggling middle school students, as the results of calculations involving fractions are displayed as fractions, not decimals. The TI-73 is fully programmable and comes with a fairly large library of built-in formulas, making things like time and distance conversions a snap.
The product comes with two features that few other calculators boast--firmware with flash memory and link capabilities. The use of flash memory means Texas Instruments can upgrade and enhance the features of the calculator and make them available to TI-73 users without requiring a hardware upgrade. Instead, you simply download the new firmware or software applications, connect the calculator to your computer, and copy the new stuff over the old stuff. The package comes with a cable for linking two calculators, but unfortunately, the cable for connecting the TI-73 to your computer is sold separately.
Texas Instruments didn't skimp on the documentation and bundles a 350+ indexed manual with the calculator. This tome is chock-full of illustrated examples that demystify the device's more advanced features like statistical analysis, lists, tables, and function graphing. We were graphing within 10 minutes of unpacking the TI-73, and cobbling together simple programs within an hour. The TI-73 is marketed as a calculator for middle school students, but it has enough power and features to satisfy all but the most advanced high school and college students. --T. Byrl Baker
Pros:
- Large display
- Comes with a good assortment of built-in functions
- Programmable
- Documentation is excellent
Cons:
- Superior TI-83+ costs about the same amount of money

TI-73 Graphing Calculator.......2007-04-10
TI-73 Graphing Calculator is bought to my daughter in 7th grade. It is the model recommended by her Math teacher (Middle School).
Depends on what you need a calculator for.......2003-04-24
If you are in grades 4-8 this is a wonderful calculator to explore and formalize your understanding of the math concepts. It has many nice features. However if you need a graphing calculator that you will use through high school use the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition. If you are purchasing during your high school years you may want to consider even starting with a higher caliber calculator than this as a TI-83 Plus will not take you through very many college level math courses until you need something more substantial in available functions.
Good calculator--but I would save the money for a better one.......2000-09-19
Well....this calculator has many features for middle school students, but really is it worth it ? If you're in middle school, then you probably won't need such an expensive calculator, because you really don't need to use a calculator to graph. If you are learning graphing, you might not be able to use it one the test. In my opinion, I would buy one of those cheaper plainly scientific calculators. They get the job done and they are cheaper. But, if you really want to get a graphing calculator, I would suggest the TI-83 plus. Right here on Amazon.com, it being sold at $86.99, CHEAPER than this one and with more functions!!!!!!
The TI 73.......2000-09-01
The TI 73 is the best. At least in my opinion, it is the best for all the people in Middle School. If you are in Middle school at this moment and you need a graphing calculator for math or science, don't go out and spend alot of money on another kind of calculator. The TI 73 is fit for the job!
Student.......2000-08-26
I use this calculator at school. It is great! It does graphs, plots, and much more! I like how it shows you all of the number that you type in, unlike a regular calculator that only shows you 1 number at a time. It's wonderful for schools and home!

Product Description
The Cyber-shot DSC-T1 digital camera?s LCD screen occupies roughly two-thirds of the camera's back-surface area, giving more room to see and show off images at the moment they are captured.Press the shutter release button and the camera demonstrates why it is perhaps the fastest five megapixel camera. Due in large part to Sony's Real Imaging Processor circuit, it shoots full-resolution images in one second intervals, and can capture four high-speed burst shots in less than two seconds. But the camera offers more than great still pictures. With optional Memory Stick PRO Duo cards, the T1 camera captures and plays back high resolution moving images in MPEG-VX Fine mode - good enough to make onlookers believe that it was captured with a digital camcorder.
Customer Reviews:
Sony Cybershot DSC-T1 5MP Digital Camera .......2007-08-29
A litttle heavy, takes pictures really slow, has a pretty long flash recharge time. so it takes a while for the camera to get ready for your next shot, Battery life is short. Doesnt zoom in as much as other digital cameras do in this category, Try a camera where the lens actually telescopes away from the camera.
Great Camera.......2007-03-01
I bought this camera 2 years ago and have been GREAT ever since, very slick camera it is small enough to fit in your pocket without bothering you,I take it everywhere I go, the battery lasts enough to take a lot of pictures so no problems about that. LCD screen is big so you can preview your pics. The pictures are crisp clear, vivid colors, the auto mode adapts to every situation possible.
Cons: not all the time but in ocassions i've some red eye pictures.
My guess is you are buying this camera to take it with you and to take pictures at parties with your friends, etc. this is a great camera for that. If you want to take a lot of night scenery pictures then you might want to consider other one.
Remember when Sony products were good and reliable?.......2007-02-12
I purchased this camera new a few years ago. I paid over $500 when it came out, plus an extended warranty. Despite the lack of red-eye reduction and horrible shutter speed, it's size has allowed me to bring it with me almost anywhere. Tonight though, I pick my camera off the charger, turn it on to take a picture and the lens is no longer working correctly. I have never abused this camera and have kept it in excellent condition, yet it just failed for no reason. I used to buy all sony products in the 90's. You paid a little more but you got quality. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore. I have Discman's that have worked for 10+ years, yet I cannot get 2 out of a digital camera. I checked ebay and this seems to be a common problem. I am never buying a sony product again.
Its my fun camera .......2006-12-27
I have the Limited Japanese Black Version . As soon as I saw it, I knew that was the camera that I wanted. I love technology, and this struck my eyes and I was impulsive and just got it! I was pulling my hair out reading reviews and just going insane. So I said, you know what, just go for it! And I did. Im very happy with this camera. It does exactly what I need it to do, fit into my back pocket! I can take it anywhere, and it is not bulky like other film cameras or even DSLR's ! There are things about it that make me sad, and wish I bought a different camera. But, you never know if your going to like a camera until you try it out. So, I have had it for abuot 3 years, and for the most part I like it, but I still look at other camera, and, I still buy other camera. Because it is an addiction.
Pro's: great size, very easy to take everywhere, fits in small purse, pockets, jackets, etc. Cool , sleek , stylish, Big LCD screen, bright, easy buttons , user friendly interface, produces up to an 8.5 x 11 print, great quality, sephia and negative color modes are useful and fun, has great accessories, great battery life, great macro feature
con's: red eye reduction does seem to work, flash grabs light and dust with make these weird orb looking circles on pictures, buttons are small, front slide down lense cover doesnt lock, nighttime photos are horrible, unless you carry a tripod around with you 24/7, then you MIGHT get a good photo.. but chances are slim to none!
all in all, its a nice camera to have to take " fun photos " if your on the go, and you just want something small its a good camera.
I would recomend the DSC-T30 , its is a newer edition and they have fixed a lot of the problems that you find with the DSC-T1
No red-eye reduction.......2006-12-13
The size of this camera is great. The picture clarity is great. However, unless you like red-eye pictures do not purchase this camera. This camera is the biggest disapointment. I purchased a Sony cybershot three years ago and it was great, never had any issues but unfortuantely my son broke it so I had to purchase a new one. I did lots of research, read lots of reviews and finally decided to purchase the new DSC-T10, "one of the best ones out there". Well I do not agree. I have called Sony at least three times to receive help on how to remove the red-eye from my pictures and their only suggestions is to use the red-eye reduction feature, which does not work! I use it every time and I still get red-eye. Their other suggestion is to tell the people to look away from the camera...well it still happens. I am so disapointed in this camera. I can't believe I spent $[...]+ for this camera and it is the quality it is. I'm ready to give it away I'm so frustrated. One other thing if you like to use the date stamp then you'll need to purchase either a docking station for your computer or purchase their additional software because if you take your memory stick to a store to print out your pictures then the date stamp will not print on them. Neither will it do it if you use an internet site like snapfish.com or kodakgallery.com. The biggest dissapointment! DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA!
