After several trips to the electronics stores, I came across this model, and was amazed at what it could do for the price range it was in. There were many other top name units for a lot more money, that probably sounded as good, but they did not have all the features this one did.

This is a great home theater receiver for the price. It has plenty of power for a 5.1 system at 110 watts x 5 channels. I got a great deal on mine at just under $400 (MSRP: $ 600.00).

o.k. for the first few months after purchase.......2003-09-21

I bought this receiver in Feb 2002, when I found my other receiver(also a Sony) quit working in the optic dolby digital mode. I liked that this model offered much more wattage per channel(110X5) and also decoded DTS signal. Sony products also offer much more settings for the money. It comes with close to thirty EQ settings and a cool on-screen programming function. Maybe I was just going after manufacture name, because most of my other electronic products are Sony and I didn't want to have all these different remotes crowding up my coffee table, but I also think if I am going to spend upwards of 400-500 dollars for something, it better do alot of things. This model, at first, did that. The included learning remote allowed me to consolidate my 6 other remotes into one, albeit large. After a couple months of having to keep my volume below 20 in order to keep my neighbors from hating me ( one of the great perks of apartment life), the receiver seemed to lose its power dramatically. I sent it back, they presumably "fixed" it, but with the same results. Throughout owning this receiver, I have sent it back 4 times. All with disappointing results. Presently, when I am playing a DVD, the volume is pathetic. It almost sounds like the model is on MUTE. I am planning to call Sony's tech line and hopefully get a reliable repair on this problem. If I get it back in any condition other than when I bought it, this will be the last time I deal with a Sony product.

nice until it fails.......2003-09-07

I purchased this unit a bit over a year ago and after a year my front right speaker output failed....i used to be a big fan of sony, however i have noticed that their quality is going down hill....after this one failed (like a similar one two years ago) i purchased a harmon kardon AVR-125 and hope to have better luck with it....from now on i am staying away from sony

Technology gone wrong...
My big problem with this unit is running two sets of front speakers at the same time. A or B, but not A & B. Apart from this show stopper, I spent about 5 hours trying to hook up this device, be prepared to buy additional digital optical and S-video cables (nothing is included). The manual is worthless. As mentioned, I need a receiver that can drive two sets of front speakers, so I returned it.

How many pictures will it store?.......2004-11-06

How many pictures will it store? It is the most commonly asked question from digital camera enthusiast but usually the question that is the most difficult to get a straight answer about. Well, considering I worked in the memory industry for over 7 years I can help clarify this perplexing question and do so unbiased as I have since changed industries.

The Lexmark 512MB 16X CompactFlash Card ., like most 512MB cards, will store on average 568 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 426 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera, 256 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 204 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 160 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

I truly hope this review was helpful to you in determining whether this 512MB card is the right capacity for your specific needs.

A decent point and shoot digital camera.......2007-08-24

This is a nice, light and compact camera. I've taken plenty of great shots with it and the LCD display on the back is definitely a plus. However, when trying to shoot in less than perfect lighting conditions it can be tricky to get a shot without blurring the image.

Glad to see I am not the only one.......2007-07-23

Well, it seems that we have joined the 1 year club that everyone else who has owned this camera for a year is already in. This camera wont take pictures indoors. Too bad I had to find out this past weekend when my daughter was the flower girl in a wedding and I came home with no shots of her to share with family and friends, not to mention I also have no shots of the bride and groom or any of the wedding itself. What a disapointment. I wish I could sue Sony for the loss of memories that I suffered from this lousy camera.

Nice Pix, Crappy Reliability.......2007-06-10

I bought this camera when I was in Japan in October 2004 and immediately fell in love with it despite its rather short lifespan. Like April Sumner's experience in the review prior to mine, I too received the infamous "error message" with a non-retractable lens. Now I, like her, am stuck with a camera that's not worth fixing. It took some great pix, but also did poorly with a flash as people were washed out when it was used. I did like the versatility of being able to use both regular (Li-technology) and rechargeable batteries. I am not sure if
I would buy another Sony product again.

Bad focus in low-light, now it doesn't work.......2007-03-28

I've owned this camera a little over a year. It was my 2nd digital camera. It always had focus issues in low-light. I thought it was me, but after working extensively with the manual, after I finally had some time, I discovered that it was the camera. You really need a tripod for those low-light shots. I wasn't able to return it, so I've taken hundreds of pictures with it. It takes beautiful pictures with good light and has a really nice size screen. However, the lens will no longer contract and I get an error message that is unresolvable unless I pay at least $170. I'm just going to get a better quality camera. I will not buy Sony again.

I couldn't be happier.......2007-03-27

I can't speak to all the advanced, fancy manual options that some highly advanced photography professionals seem to use to rate cameras.

I can say what was most important to me in choosing this camera was:

1. A good flash range for indoor shots beyond 10 feet.
2. A quick focus and reset so that it I can take one or more pictures quickly without having to wait for the camera to reset.
3. A realtively small size and excellent viewfinder.
4. High quality pictures without huge complexity.

This camera is excellent in these areas. I would hightly recommend this for someone who wants great pictures from a realatively small camera without spending a ton for advanced features that most people never use (although these features may be available in this camera - Don't know and don't care)
