Amazon.com Product Description

The Tivoli Henry Kloss Model Two Radio with companion speaker, the Tivoli Model Subwoofer and the Tivoli Model CD are designed to be used together as part of a complete compact stereo system but are sold separately from each other.

All the elements of the component system have classic styling that makes Tivoli products so distinctive. Simplicity and elegance are engineered into all three components and, for the most part, we came away impressed with what this little system could do in terms of sound quality, as well as its ease of use. It's worth noting here that all three components sport separate ports for AC and DC power, making them a great choice for boating or RV use.

Henry Kloss Model Two
The Model Two serves as the base unit for the Tivoli component system. It is very similar to the Model Three clock radio, without the alarm clock section. Like other Tivoli radios, the Model Two is just over 8 inches wide, 4.5 inches high, and 5.25 inches deep--about the size of a toaster turned on its side. The unit also ships with a companion speaker which, unlike the monaural Henry Kloss Model One, gives the system full stereo separation.

The Tivoli Model Two with companion speaker.
The Model Two has a single rotary dial that handles tuning for both AM and FM stations. The dial is designed to move between stations at a speed that's a bit slower than the speed at which the user turns the knob--a five-to-one ratio, to be exact. This ratio dialing technique makes it far easier to tune stations accurately and quickly. It's a nice touch that sets the unit apart from other desktop radios. The tuner band selection and volume dials are easy to control, and they're well designed for hands of all sizes. A small LED power indicator, as well as an LED that helps determine signal strength, are positioned between the dials. We did have one gripe about the Model Two controls, though--the same gripe we had about the Model Three. Unlike the high-contrast labeling we found on the Platinum Series Model One radio, the Model Two's blue-gray lettering atop a taupe background is difficult to read, especially in low-light situations.

The Model Two's 3-inch driver is housed next to the tuning dial and is protected by a handsome metal speaker cover. The companion speaker contains the same driver in a form factor that is the same size and construction as the Model Two's main unit. A 15-foot RCA speaker cord attached to the companion speaker allows you to set the speakers well apart in a room--great for getting optimal stereo separation. There's a small balance dial on the rear of the main unit as well as a mono-stereo switch.

A coaxial antenna jack for the included FM antenna wire is provided, although the Model Two also has an internal FM antenna. Tivoli recommends using the supplied external antenna for tricky tuning in locales with a lot of closely spaced stations. There's a handy switch for alternating between the internal and external antennae, as well. A standard 3.5-millimeter headphone jack is also provided, as is a 3.5-millimeter auxiliary line-in port for plugging in the Model CD. For the really techno-savvy, there's also a 3.5-millimeter mixing input that permits audio from your computer to be mixed in with the radio. A preamp-out jack is provided for the Model Subwoofer, and if you want to use the Model Two as a component tuner--not a bad idea given the overall quality and accuracy of the tuning circuitry--Tivoli has provided a 3.5-millimeter output port.

The Subwoofer adds rich bass to the Model Two.
Model Subwoofer
At 6.5 inches high, 9.5 inches wide, and 6.1 inches deep, the Model Subwoofer is a bit larger than the other components in the Tivoli component system. While a 5.25-inch bass driver dominates the front of the unit, there's also a deep front port for added bass response. A bass-level dial lets you decide how much of the low end you want to hear. The on-off switch has a sensor that automatically activates the subwoofer when a signal is detected. With 20 watts of power, the Model Subwoofer is an impressive little box with the capability of dramatically extending the fullness and richness of the Model Two sound.

Model CD
With its cherry wood casing, Tivoli's component CD player matches the Model Two perfectly while offering equally simple operation. We really liked the elegant slot-loading mechanism; it felt solid and reliable. Basic functions like play, stop, and track selection can be controlled on the unit. There's also a tiny little remote that adds shuffle, direct track selection, repeat, and intro-scanning functions. True to form, the remote is simple and easy to use. The Model CD's display is bright and crisp with the look of a high-end audiophile-class component. We played a number of CDs, including CD-R discs with nary a hitch. Tivoli says that the Model CD will not play CD-RW discs, however.

The Tivoli CD is elegant and capable.
A 3.5-millimeter headset jack is provided on the back of the unit, as are RCA outputs and an AC power port that connects to a supplied brick-style AC adapter. The unit is also capable of running on DC power.

All Together Now
Setting up the component system was fairly straightforward. All of the inputs and outputs are clearly marked, and each component ships with everything you need to make the right connections. Although it might be too much to ask for, it would be great if the Model Two main unit had an AC power input for plugging in at least one of the components. This is admittedly a minor quibble, and it might not be feasible in such a small device.

Just like our experiences with other Tivoli products, sound was impressive--full of clear highs and mids and rich, room-filling lows. The Model Two tuning feature felt less accurate than the Model One, but we still were able to dial in stations quickly and easily. Overall, we recommend the Model Two as a high-quality mini-component system, because systems this size rarely sound this good. Even without the subwoofer engaged, the sound was rich and resonant. As soon as we plugged in the subwoofer, though, we were transported to near sonic bliss. It's a must-have accessory for the Model Two.--Joshua Gunn

5 out of 5 stars Tivoli Value.......2007-09-16

First, I am already a Tivoli fan. I have Model One units in my office, kitchen and master bathroom. Recently I purchased the Model 2 and the subwoofer to compliment my 32" Sharp LCD TV. The 32" LCD is the family TV set up in my living room. If you are like me and my family, we do not listen to regular programs, sports and movies at "movie theater" volume, but we were looking for something stronger than the tv speakers. The Model 2 with subwoofer is a great solution. The system looks good in our living room. The Model 2 is easy to use for eveyone in the family. The sound is full, warm and much louder than we will ever need. For under $300.00 dollars we have a very impressive little system that has suprised some hard core home theater brother in laws.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Product!.......2007-06-12

I was amazingly surprised at the sound quality this unit produces. I purchased this for our formal living area for both it's looks and sound and both are quality. Because of the speaker size these speakers are quite punchy while not losing the high end of the spectrum either. All in all they make for a great setup.

5 out of 5 stars a few flaws but still the best STEREO table radio available.......2007-04-22

I'm a big fan of Tivoli products as I own several and specifically two of the Model 2 under review. As anyone who has seen these know they are finely crafted with attractive real wood cabinets and solid chassis. They offer simple analog controls with accurate tuning and excellent room filling sound. They are not to be compared to an audiophile set of componets however as neither the size of the speakers nor amplifier output is capable of the requisite dynamic impact....they are just what they're purported to be, high end table radios and to that end they really have no peer.

The two criticisms that are valid; that the tuner section is "slightly" less sensitive than the Model 1 and that the AM section is weak with regard to station pull are justifiable, however I don't know of another table radio that does a better job at either. To compare the tuner section of the Model 2 to the Model 1 is a bit disengenous anyway since the Model 1 is a mono design and has a significantly easier job than does a stereo tuner. The AM reception is a thornier issue and my advice would be to just consider this a very nice high end FM stereo radio. If your needs are to listen to talk radio and ball games (typical AM fare) then you'd probably be better served with a $29 Sony.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Office, As iPod Speaker.......2007-04-14

Excellent radio, very capable external speakers for my iPod. Without repeating the same comments made by others, let me focus on two particulars.

First: Suitability for the Office. I used my Model Two at my office for the past year. It looks really nice on a desk, without adding to the visual clutter that tends to build up. Importantly, it has great FM reception even on the 51st floor of my building, which is tall enough to crowd the dial with weak stations and which is surrounded by other tall buildings generating multipath reflections for the strong signals. The Model Two sounds very good even at low volume, which of course is often mandatory at work.

Second: Suitability as iPod Speaker. I recently took my Model Two home to compare how good it sounds compared to the Apple M9867LL/A iPod Hi-Fi Home Stereo I've been using to play digital music (streamed using my Airport Express). The Apple Hi Fi is a different product, but comparisons are nonetheless useful:

Features Favoring the Apple Hi Fi:
(a) The Hi Fi has much punchier bass than the Model Two without subwoofer.
(b) The Hi Fi has an optical in.
(c) The Hi Fi has a remote volume control.
(d) The Hi Fi has a built-in iPod dock.
(e) The Hi Fi is at least nominally portable, with a battery compartment.

Features Favoring the Model Two:
(a) The Model Two looks better and less intrusive in our traditional living room.
(c) The Model Two has vastly better stereo separation.
(d) The Model Two has better midrange detail.
(e) The Model Two has a wider effective listening area in the room. The Hi Fi has a very narrow soundstage, and if you step out of that area the sound quality suffers.
(f) The Model Two has a good radio built-in.

Bottom line: Playing back from an iPod or using Airtunes, I prefer the sound coming out of the Model Two over that of the Apple Hi Fi.

5 out of 5 stars Tivoli Model Two Deserves a Full 10 Stars!.......2007-04-07

It is a pleasure to give a positive review to a product that has been designed using the "KISS Formula"! Simple, functional and elegant but the best part is the sound. I had been looking for a sound system for my living room and had been leaning towards the multi functionality offered by some of the 321 systems out there. However after reading the reviews that reported that such systems are marginal for suround sound and outright not good for music I decided to pass on them. I live in an apartment so I couldn't hardwire suround speakers and needed to be able to listen to my music at low to moderate volume levels at the very highest out of regards for my neighbors. The sound out of my Tivoli Model Two is so warm and rich and balanced over the musical spectrum it brings to mind the warmth offered by the old tube type radios that everyone laments has been lost in this digital age. I should not that I also added the Model Subwoofer right off the bat. It doesn't boom at all but adds just the right amount depth and low range sound to compliment the sound from the Model Two speakers and all at normal listening levels. It's compact design doesn't dominate the room and you hardly know it's there. I highly recommend this radio to anyone that is looking for a system with the criteria that I mentioned. Tivoli has exceeded my expectations and I am so glad I bought this instead of that other b*s* system that advertises so much. Give the Tivoli Model Two a try, you'll be glad you did, I promise!

The SD-V55HT from Toshiba is a powerful home theater in a box, featuring a combined high-end DVD/VCR/receiver component and six speakers ready to plug in and play. Enjoy movies in multichannel surround sound, record your favorite shows, play CDs, and listen to the radio with the SD-V55HT. All you need is a TV to complete your home theater setup.

The SD-V55HT's main component is a complete audio/video receiver, a progressive-scan DVD player, a high-fidelity stereo VCR, and an AM/FM tuner with a total output of 400 watts. Each of the five individual speakers cranks out 60 watts per channel and the subwoofer features 100 watts of power.

The DVD player in the SD-V55HT utilizes Toshiba's ColorStream Pro progressive-scan video technology to yield vivid colors, clean resolution, and reduced onscreen distortion. Digital cinema progressive scanning, or 3:2 pulldown, reproduces your DVDs in theaterlike clarity.

The versatile digital picture zoom option lets you can take full advantage of that picture clarity through the ability to magnify a portion of the picture onscreen while in freeze-frame mode or even while watching a DVD in real time. The feature is great for spotting details in movies or even adjusting letterboxed movies to fill your screen. The SD-V55HT also features a wide array of DVD features, including multiple angle selection, a fast-scan option that allows you to fly through DVDs at up to 20 times the regular speed, and three slow motion speeds.

In addition to playing a full range of DVDs, the SD-V55HT plays CDs and MP3 audio files, so you can enjoy your favorite music. You can also view digital JPEG photos from CDs created in your computer with the SD-V55HT.

The VCR provides a wealth of features as well, including high-fidelity stereo sound playback and four-head recording. You can play regular VHS tapes as well as high-resolution S-VHS cassettes as well. You won't have to miss a favorite TV show on movie night, because the SD-V55HT lets you record television programs on the VCR while watching a DVD. You can also copy non-copy-protected DVDs onto VHS tapes.

The VCR in the SD-V55HT is very user-friendly. Its clock automatically sets itself to the local time, and it also logs all available channels into memory the first time you hook it up.

Make the most of your music and movies with clear, clean sound. The SD-V55HT features pure digital reproduction and includes Dolby Digital, Dolby ProLogic II, and DTS decoders to supply the SD-V55HT's six speakers with a rich, realistic surround-sound experience.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't do it - never again.......2006-04-19

Worked okay for about 18 months. Audio performance is weak but video was okay. Now nothing works, it just died. When you turn it on, it goes into "protection mode" and shuts down by itself. Even when it did run, it made a loud sweaking noise. Complete piece of crap.

    2 out of 5 stars It's just OK.......2004-12-27

I bought and received this unit and have had it about a week. It is OK for the price and a very entry level system. However, any video or audio buff will be very disappointed. This unit is average all the way around. The DVD player is a DVD player, nothing amazaing, the VCR works, the AM/FM radio works but the antennae and reception is way below average these days, the sound is OK and possibly a bit below average for this low end unit. Overall, for a 2nd system, a very small room, a child, etc this is a reasonable unit. For you main system there are many better options - seperating the VCR from the DVD home theater would get you a much better unit and then just pick up a low cost VCR. Nothing impresses me about this Toshiba. Its barely average all the way around. Owning a higher end Toshiba, this was a disappointment. The remote control color scheme and reflectiveness makes it very difficult to read, small buttons, confusing menu system, non-lighted remote. I give it 2 stars because it does play DVDs and videos fine. However, its radio, sound, remote, and menu's are way below average. Better off with a cheapie end Koss, Audiovox, etc unit.

This Toshiba replaces an older broken GO VIDEO unit for someone who required DVD/VCR. The GO VIDEO unit was several years old and was considered entry level low end at the time. However, it performed better than the Toshiba. The GO VIDEO lacked the CDRW, MP3, AM/FM, etc features common on today's current models though.

To sum it up, I would pass this unit by and either look at the lower priced units or seperate components and spend more money on a better overall setup.

4 out of 5 stars Packed with features, well worth the price........2004-06-30

I have been shopping for a new stereo for the past 10 years. I have since moved into a house, acquired multiple televisions, VCRs, DVD players, but no home theatre system. Instead, everything ran through my television speakers. My shelf was loaded with an Xbox game console, a cable box, a low-end DVD player and an unreliable VCR. Spanning 5 shelves, there is no room for much else.

Then this system came along. My initial budget was $1,200 (About $500 for the receiver and the rest for speakers.) The Toshiba SD-V55HT is an out-of-the box home theater system packed with features to free up my shelf and upgrade my audio life. Priced at less than $300, this was an easy buy. I have had the system now for 2 months and I'm very happy with it.

The system comes with a VCR and DVD player and stereo receiver housed in one unit. The receiver has 5 different sound modes including Dolby Prologic II, Movie, Music, Matrix and 3-D Surround. In addition, there is also By-Pass which determines the type of audio is being received and handles it accordingly. It has one additional input in the back for my Xbox and another in front for the occasion when I want to hook up my video camera which I haven't tried yet.

The speakers are lightweight. At 60w each for the 3 front speakers and 2 rear speakers and 100w for the subwoofer, this system is ideal for a small room which I have.

The setup was a breeze. This is "stereos for dummies". Each of the speakers is color coded with a matching speaker wire. The manual helps you figure out how to get everything in the right place. The trickiest part is probably was getting my TV and cable box wired up properly, but essentially, its standard fare.

Once you are up and running, you can run the setup to tell the system where the speakers are to optimize the audio experience.

The system is silver and black with nice lines. The bookshelf speakers are short and small. It fits in well in my messy sun room without standing out.

The big win is the addition of a DVD player, MP3/CD player and a VCR in one unit. Everything plays great. I have no complaints about the sound but I upgraded from my television speakers.

I was a little disappointed that the AM/FM radio antennae are independent from the cable antenna. The package comes with a cheap loop antenna for AM and a wire antenna for FM. I pull both along the side of my entertainment console and then hide them both behind a clock. The reception is passable.

The remote is fairly familiar to handle the VCR, DVD player, MP3/CD player and radio. But you can't give up your other remotes. It doesn't handle the television or the cable box. This is really a bother since my TV is also a Toshiba.

The MP3 screen display unfortunately doesn't make good use of the space. The left half of the screen displays the track and navigates folders fine enough. The right have is reserved for manually assembling a play list which I will likely never do. I would have rather liked to see a full-screen with each track well displayed and this split screen only when I decide to build a play list.

The presets for the radio are a bit tricky. Each slot can hold an AM and FM station. This gets confusing when you switch to the radio and the wrong station comes up. I would have preferred that each slot is configured for one station and either AM or FM. A minor nit.

This plug-n-play system came with a DVD player, a CD and MP3 player, a VCR, AM/FM, cable and two other inputs. No doubt about it, at $299 this is a great price. Comparable systems lacked a DVD player, MP3 player or the VCR for the same price or more. One day, I am may still upgrade to the system of my dreams, but this is a nice step in the right direction.

Pros: Packed with features and well worth the price.

    Cons: AM/FM seems like a poor add-on.

Bottom Line: Boat-load of features for a great price for a small room.

i can't even tell you how much i hate the 2 vtech phones i have gotten. one i got as a gift, and the other i bought. they both are horrible. they have terrible sound quality, range, battery life, & durability - and they were especially poor in my 2 floor apt! . i tried to save a little $, but now i'm on my third cordless phone in a little over a year and have spent more $ than if i had just gotten a siemens 2.4ghz w/ caller ID in the first place! do yourself a favor & pay attention to the reviews. cordless phones are tough.

5 out of 5 stars excellent, clear, and inexpensive.......2001-12-09

I've used the 9106, the equally inexpensive sibling of this phone, for two years. It has good range and is quite clear and free from hissing, static or other noise in the earpiece, and everyone tells me that my voice is very clear on their end as well.

Problems with noise can and will occur on any phone when there's radio frequency interference in the home. Moving the base unit, putting line filters on the phone cord, or reducing the range are all necessary in some settings, no matter what brand phone you're using.

In my long experience I see no reason to pay more for a phone than I paid for this one.

    3 out of 5 stars It's a cute, compact phone, but...........2001-09-23

It's a cute phone, with the color, and everything, but it doesn't have great clarity. First of all, while it is compact, and easy to hold, the outer casing is plastic, and makes you believe that if you drop it, it might break. It seems to be very delicate. It's cool cuz it has a volume selection thing, so you can turn up or turn down the volume. For this price, i really wouldn't recommend it. ... But if you want a high performance phone, go with Sony. Not with this one.

    2 out of 5 stars Dial broke.......2004-05-27

I had this camera for about a year when the dial broke. Of course, repairing this is far more costly than a new camera, so here I am. I found the camera did take good quality pictures, but if it isn't going to work after a year, then what's the point?

1 out of 5 stars The dial broke..........2003-10-28

I've had it for a year and half... it has it's good, and bad sides, but 2 days ago, the dial just fell off... upon inspection I've discovered that it was made to brake... which was supported by numerous reports of the same problem... don't buy this camera, or any other from toshiba...

2 out of 5 stars Who needs AC Adapter?.......2003-10-13

I bought this camera in 2001 and it's dead now. When I just got it, it sarted giving me problems with batteries(kept showing "low batteries"), so I bought AC Adapter to avoid this problem(I used it indoor only), and that same problem came back again 2.5 years later, "low batteries" with AC Adapter. It made noise, kept blinking until went completely dead. I did take same good photos with this camera, but since it's dead now, I have AC Adapter that's perfectly fine and doesn't go with any other camera. I payed $60, if anyone wants it, I'll sell it for $25. Email me: DukyTheDog@yahoo.com

    2 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware.......2002-10-10

This camera is a decent general use camera, but buyers should be VERY aware of some inherent flaws with the camera and Toshiba's lack of support for their own engineering flaws. The camera has 2 reoccuring problems. First, the tabs in the battery compartment are weak. Extreme care must be taken opening and closing the compartment to prevent wear and breakage. Second, the mode dials on these cameras fall off in normal use. The plastic pins which hold it in place break off no matter how gently used. Toshiba has stopped supporting the camera with replacement parts. If the dial falls off outside the warranty window, your only option will be to trade the camera in for a refurbished camera. The price of the trade is not justifiable considering the problems, and you will be better off buying a new camera from someone besides Toshiba. I currently have a worthless PDR-M60, and will not buy from Toshiba again.

2 out of 5 stars Painfully high shutter lag.......2002-08-03

Good looking Camera. Good Pictures. But very low shutter speed. Low Memory. Heavy drain on the battery

I tried to take my 2 year old daughter's pictures in action. But becuase of the SLOW SHUTTER speed, I did not get the pose I wanted. Many pictures are dark, 2 out of 5 pictures come out completely dark. Very low memory - just 4 MB. Fits just 6 pictures in the defult resolution. Uses up too much battery power - Need to recharge after approx. 10 pictures. Does not come with rechargable battery or recharger.
