The Tivoli Model One has been praised far and wide for its high-quality sound, small size, and cool, retro styling. We got our hands on a sample unit and came away impressed, just as many others have. Anyone who wants a compact, stylish radio with surprisingly good sound should give the Model One a look.
Design
In many ways, the Model One is the culminating achievement of famed audio engineer Henry Kloss's long career. Designed from the ground up by Kloss, who passed away in 2002, the radio exudes understated class and elegant simplicity. We received the Platinum Series Model One, which features a hand-lacquered, high gloss dark walnut cabinet that is simply gorgeous. According to Tivoli, the genuine wood casing isn't just for looks as it provides "an acoustically inert housing" that maximizes the speaker's sound quality. At just over 8 inches wide, 4.5 inches high, and 5.25 inches deep, the Model One is about the size of a toaster turned on its side-- plenty small to fit on a desk, dresser, or nightstand.
The Model One's single rotary dial handles tuning for both AM and FM stations. It feels sturdy and smooth in the hand. The dial is designed to move between stations at a speed that is a bit slower than the speed at which the user turns the knob-- a 5 to 1 ratio, to be exact. This "ratio" dialing technique makes it far easier to tune stations accurately and quickly. It's a nice touch that sets the unit apart from other desktop radios.
The tuner band selection and volume dials are easy to control. Plus, they're well designed for hands of all sizes. A small LED power indicator, as well as an LED that helps determine signal strength, are positioned between the dials. We liked the light-colored face and dark lettering printed on the Platinum Series model we reviewed; it made for easy operation in dimly-lit rooms. The Model One's single, 3" driver is protected by a handsome metal speaker cover. Tivoli adds that the speaker is enhanced by a "multi-stage frequency contouring circuit that adjusts the speaker's output over half-octave increments." The result, Tivoli claims, is "musically accurate tonal balance and bass response."
The back of the unit features a coaxial antenna jack for the included FM antenna wire. While the Model One also has an internal FM antenna, Tivoli recommends using the supplied external one for tricky tuning in locales with a lot of stations crammed together. There's a handy switch for switching between the internal and external antennae. A standard 3.5mm headphone jack is also provided, as is a 3.5mm auxiliary line in port for plugging in your iPod or other music device. If you want to use the Model One as a component tuner-- not a bad idea given the overall quality and accuracy of the tuning circuitry-- Tivoli has provided a 3.5mm output port. The back panel also sports separate ports for AC and DC power, making the unit a great choice for boating or RV use.
Listening Pleasure
As with the Tivoli iPal portable speaker system, we were initially skeptical about the performance of a small, one-speaker unit that only offers monaural sound. The reality is that most small two-speaker systems don't allow you to place the speakers very far apart anyway, and the Model One's rich, resonant sound more than made up for its lack of true stereo separation. Plus, the Model One is a single, elegant box with no annoying speaker cords.
While the Model One isn't designed to provide earth-shattering sound at high volume, it produces surprising clarity and fullness at normal listening levels. When turned all the way up, the unit's rich sound persists and we suspect that Tivoli engineered the Model One's volume level to max out before any distortion arises. If you don't need a lot of volume, the Model One delivers. As with the iPal, we were left scratching our heads and wondering how such great sound could come from such a little box.
The Model One's tuning accuracy is also impressive; we were able to dial in stations we didn't even know existed. Tivoli says this is due to the unit's discrete-component FM tuner technology, which was originally developed for cellular telephones. Whatever Tivoli has done here, they did it right; closely-spaced stations are a breeze to tune.

If you use SanDisk SD memory cards beware!!!!.......2004-08-17
Don't even think about buying this!.......2004-07-17
The first time I inserted a smart media card, the card went all the way into the unit. To get it out, I had to call customer support who told me how to disassemble the unit so that I could extract it. Great start!
It does not consistently read CF cards.
Bottom line-stay away.
Corrupted first disk I tried.......2004-07-11
Thank God for Amazon's great return policy.......2004-06-13
What is supposed to happen is that when it installs is that it will maps an addition four drives onto your computer; one for each slot. Unfortunatly it does not seem to be able to map the Smart Media drive. Even after installing the drivers off of the disc it was not able to read the SM drive.
I had two of these things; the first I exchanged for a new one after it failed to read anything. On the first one the slots weren't mounted to the face plate correctly, so when I put in the Smart Media card it fell into the back of the device and I had to spent five minuets shaking the thing out.
The second one I got was mounted correctly, but unable to read the SM cards. While it could read the Secure Digital card, it erased everything on it. Fortunatly I only had a couple of files on it, but a lot of people use SD cards for storing programs or pictures, and they would have lost everything if they used this. The Compact Flash card was the only one that worked reliably, but even that one I had problems with since it was difficult to jam the card all of the way into the slot.
I am very dissapointed with this device and with Viking, who usually makes good products. Most people don't use all six types of cards, so a lot of them would go to waste, so I would recomend just getting seperate readers for each card. It'll cost more, but probably worth it in the long run.
On a side note, I would just like to say that Amazon.com has an excellent No-questions-asked return policy. After I asked to replace my first one they paided the return postage and sent me a new one two days later.
Doesn't work with SD Cards.......2004-05-17
I got the following response from Viking Tech Support on May 17, 2004:
"We have had a few customers report seeing problems with some Sandisk cards. It appears to be a compatibility issue with Sandisk's new SD cards and the reader. The new Sandisk cards read/write speeds are faster than their older cards, and this difference may be the cause of the error.
Currently Engineering is looking at the problem. When we find a resolution I will send you an update."

Customer Reviews:
Not as described. Never buy from Samsung Again.......2002-11-25
The monitor shown above here on amazon[.com] is a little different from what I got. The ajustment button is not cover as shown above. That was a minor problem mainly Amazon[.com]'s fault. Now the problem with the monitor itself. You'll get what you pay for is perfect for describing this moniter. It's too bright even with a UV filter. It's hard to adjust. When you adjust it lower it would turn too dark. Adusting the display area to align with the screen is impossible. The left side is curve and not straight. I had tried every possible adjustment and still not straight. This monitor does not look like a .20mm monitor. A regular 2 yr old 17" CRT at work looks clearer than this one. Also you can NEVER set the resolution pass 1280x1024@85MHZ because anything higher and you will see some major flickering and by lowering the refresh rated to 75mhz at this resoluton and the whole screen would flicker. Even at 1280x1024@85MHZ you notice some minor flicker on the upper right corner.
One word "AVOID" I wanted to believe in the Samsung's product quality but after this one I would have to think twice or never think about buying their product again
Product not same as the one in photo BUT still happy with it.......2002-08-22
You will love it as much as I do!!.......2002-05-24
It was easy to adjust the settings. So far I just have my resolution set on 1152 x 864. I was used to 1024 x 768 before, but I am sure I will gradually increase the resolution after adjusting to it more. I love all the choices it gives you to change your resolution to. I checked out a lot of other 17-inch monitors and I did not see any that was able to match this ones ability to go up to 2048 x 1536.
I am very happy with the quality of this monitor. I am glad I made the decision to spend a little more for a high quality monitor. I debated over and over with this monitor and the cheaper monitors which had fewer features. I do freelance webdesign and this monitor is perfect for it. Graphics and text look amazing. It was very easy to set up and took only a matter of minutes. This is definately a monitor for everyone from beginners to the professionals.
Get this monitor you will love it as much as I do :)
Samsung Dynaflat 700IFT.......2002-03-15
The 700IFT boasts an awsome resolution for a 17 inch monitor: 2048 x 1536 maximum resolution at 60 Hz. That means, it can run a godly 1600x1200 picture with perfection!
The IFT series is also very high quality, includes all the new technologies. It's also very healthy as far as monitors go, with the anti glare, anti static coatings.
Some may say a 17 inch monitor is too small, but honestly, it isn't. It's the perfect size. Getting anything bigger is totally unnesessary and hurts your eyes.
For the price Amazon.com charges, and the free shipping, you CANNOT beat this monitor at the price. I seriously doubt you will find another monitor as good as this one .... Unless you get a different model Samsung Dynaflat of course. But I assure you, this one is the best bargain, I have compared them all :)

VTech 9121 Jelly Bean 900 MHz Analog Cordless Phone with Caller ID (Purple)
Manufacturer: Vtech ProductGroup: CE Binding: Electronics Accessories:
Product Features:
ASIN: B00001TQ43 |
Product Description
Vtech 900 MHz cordless phones outperform traditional, lower frequency models in both sound quality and range potential. A 900 MHz radio wave bounces off objects more efficiently, and, as a result, will carry a greater distance. In addition, the 900 MHz high frequency wave holds up better than lower frequency phones to sources of interference, such as fluorescent lighting.Amazon.com Review
Make a colorful desktop statement and know who's calling before you answer. Plus, with the 900 MHz frequency band, this phone offers improved range and clarity over older phones operating on lower frequency bands. To set up the phone, we inserted the battery pack, plugged in the AC power, and connected the RJ-11 telephone line cord. You should let the battery charge overnight before using the phone for the first time. For caller ID setup, according to the owner's manual, "When you first plug in your VT9121, you will be prompted to perform several setup procedures." We were not prompted, but we found in the manual that we could initiate setup manually by pressing and holding both caller ID scroll keys for six seconds.
We consulted the manual again to program the ringer type and set the caller ID information. These processes were straightforward if not intuitive. There is no setting for the local area code, as the phone cannot automatically dial any numbers stored in its 99-call caller ID memory.
In our tests of the VT9121, we placed the base unit in a downstairs area where walls, floors, and obstructions might interfere with signal quality. We made several calls, and the phone sounded only slightly softer than our reference corded desk phone, and with only occasional minor static, when the handset was close to the base. We could hear the onset of fuzzy reception when the handset was about 50 feet from the base. Interference became annoying at about 150 feet, but the handset continued to function intermittently until it lost contact with the base at about 450 feet. The handset resumed contact with the base at 150 feet.
Within a reasonably close proximity to the base, the VTech VT9121 sounds nice and clear. And if you'd like to add a little color to your desktop, this cordless phone makes a fine choice.

Toshiba Portege M205-S810 Tablet PC (1.50 GHz Pentium M (Centrino), 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, USB DVD-CD-RW Combo)
Manufacturer: Toshiba ProductGroup: Personal Computer Binding: Personal Computers Accessories:
ASIN: B0001MBJHK Release Date: 2004-03-21 |
Product Description
Innovative tablet computing that redefines working efficiency - the Portege M200 series leads the market in ultra-portable wireless tablet computing with its enhanced features including Intel Centrino mobile technology and Microsoft Office OneNote 2003. The 12.1" Poly-Silicon screen features enhanced resolution displaying up to 87% more detail than other tablets giving crisper and clearer digital ink for improved legibility and ease of use. With the optional Tablet Multi Dock station, you can plug in an external keyboard and monitor allowing you to run two different applications on separate screens at the same time. Now that's smart thinking.Amazon.com Product Description
Marginally larger than the Portege 3500 Tablet PC it replaces, Toshiba's Portege M205-S810 Tablet PC is also more adaptable, more battery efficient and substantially more powerful. Though substantially costlier than comparable non-tablet portable computers, the unit nevertheless blends the speed of a midrange notebook with the convenience of stylus-based, handwritten input and subcompact portability. Few tablet PCs pack this much power into a profile this petite. The Portege M205-S810 is most at home when used to enter, store and share notes and concepts that might otherwise be entered in handwritten format. In fact, measuring just 11.6 by 9.8 by 1.3/1.5 inches and tipping the scales at a scant 4.5 pounds, the system is not significantly more bulky than some conventional paper-based notepads. Users input data in one of two ways -- either by sketching directly on the swiveling, double-duty 12.1-inch poly-silicon SXGA+ TFT color LCD display screen (maximum resolution 1400x1050) or via the system's 84-key keyboard.
Sporting an Intel Centrino-based processor (1 MB Level 2 cache) running at 1.5 GHz, a whopping 512 MB RAM memory and an nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 graphics processor with 32 MB of dedicated DDR video memory, the Portege M205-S810 will easily handle most day-to-day mobile computing tasks and the majority of today's most popular 3-D apps, with the exception of ultra-complex 3-D games and graphic design packages.
The unit features today's most desirable connectivity options, including an integrated 56K modem for low-speed e-communications, a 10 Base-T//100 Base-TX Ethernet connection for fast LAN and Internet access, and Wi-Fi compliant wireless LAN technology for those times when you can't plug in. The system also sports a surprisingly large 60 GB hard disk and facilities for an external CD and/or DVD drive, a pair of ultra-fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals such as scanners and digital cameras, an integrated TouchPad, a speaker and microphone and full 16-bit stereo sound. Battery life is estimated at an impressive 4.34 hours.

The standard in tablets, if you need a tablet Pc........2004-06-02
Use of the 1.5Ghz Pentium 4M CPU makes this more powerful than other tablets in the field, putting it in the same class as most pure laptops. As with any laptop, you have limitations on hard drive size, memory, and add-on peripherals. As a laptop, this is average, as more feature-rich and economical options exist. I would *not* recommend this machine to anyone looking for a pure laptop solution.
However, I'm a firm believer in tablets as the future. I've seen how much suffering people endure with folios of printouts and papers, almost solely because they need to markup the paper and have access to multiple sheets as they work. While this doesn't purport to expand the screen size to 36"x48" (which would be AWESOME... someday), it does allow most people to finally start editing documents by hand, and cut down on the paper waste.
Also, as a forms tool, tablets are unmatched. The user experience in Windows XP for tablets is much closer to the long-enjoyed PDA functionality of Palm and PocketPC users everywhere... without the annoying syncronization problems. And One Note from Microsoft is probably the best utility going for tablet users.
As a tablet PC, this delivers. I can't speak to the MP3/DVD problems, but the tablet does have the necessary horsepower to do either or both, so I would tend to think the problem is configuration, not intrinsic problems.
If you have the cash, buy one for your group as an evaluation item. Once people start using it, your next problem will be to find the budget room to buy more.
