Amazon.com Review

Tivoli Audio has made waves in the audio field with the retro look of models such as the Model One Henry Kloss Table Radio and the iPod-inspired iPAL Portable Audio Laboratory AM/FM Radio. The SongBook AM/FM Radio breaks that mold slightly, opting for a simple, yet fun, look and feel. And like all Tivoli Audio products, the SongBook deserves accolades for the surprisingly rich sound it is able to produce despite its compact size.

The Tivoli Design
The first thing that called our attention was the SongBook's brilliant color and unique texture. This is a radio clearly designed to make you feel happy by just looking at it and holding it. With the options of several, bright elementary colors (Black, Blue, Red, Silver, White, Green, Yellow) that make you want to reach for your crayons, the SongBook truly makes a statement. It's a radio that you'll definitely want to take to the beach, and it's a radio that makes you long for summer days all year around.

But Tivoli Audio knows that good design involves far more than color. The radio is coated with a unique, rubberized texture, and the dials and displays are all sealed so that a sudden rain shower or a little sand won't interfere with performance. We're not suggesting that you surf the waves with your SongBook, or bury it in the walls of your sand castle, but a little of Mother Nature here and there won't bother this baby.

Weighing in at three-and-a-half pounds, and with dimensions slightly smaller than that of a hardcover book, the SongBook is designed with portability in mind. The minimalist front-face design -- a round, metal mesh covering the (surprisingly robust) 2.5-inch driver, and several rubberized button and knobs are the only elements in view -- harkens back to early portable radio designs. Five presets, two tuning buttons, a rotary volume control, a function knob (OFF/AM/FM/AUX), and buttons for the alarm, sleep, time set, and back light functions are all clearly and conveniently laid out. The radio's LCD (with an on-demand blue back light) sits directly above the speaker. Meanwhile, three standard 3.5-millimeter inputs are set on the radio's side -- an auxiliary line-in port for plugging in your iPod or other music device, a port for AC/DC power, and a headphone input. All the ports feature strong, attached rubber plugs that keep out the elements when they're not in use. A rear keyhole cut-out for wall hanging is set into the back, and a single telescopic metal antenna is set into its own groove on top of the radio.

Because the SongBook is designed for the elements, the battery compartment is tightly sealed and requires a coin or screwdriver to open. Once opened, you can easily access the two switches (alkaline/rechargeable and 9k/10k) that offer options for the battery source. You can also choose U.S. or international AM reception here. The only design element missing is a handle, but Tivoli offers an optional, color coordinated SongBook Carry Bag to make up for that.

Giving it a Listen
As with other Tivoli products we've reviewed, the sound of the SongBook is remarkably strong for such a small unit. Granted, you don't get stereo sound, but competing designs that offer stereo speakers in a small package don't offer that much stereo separation anyway. Reception came in loud and clear on all the area AM and FM stations, with both AC and DC power. The only glitch, which we were able to repeat in two separate locations, was occasional outside interference that broke up broadcasts with a brief screech. All in all, though, we were happy with the sound of every genre of music we listened to, as well as talk radio. The auxiliary input was great, too, for listening to MP3s from a portable music source.

In addition to good sound quality, we found the presets, time set, alarm, and tuning/search functions impeccable. Everything was so intuitive that we barely needed to consult the manual. Another bonus we liked: The SongBook comes with a handy internal recharger, so you have the option of using rechargeable batteries without the inconvenience of having to carry around a separate recharger.

Tivoli clearly decided early on not to reinvent the wheel with respect to portable radios. Instead, they put their energies into making an easy-to-use, rugged, yet playful, radio. Audiophiles, beach-goers, and general radio listeners of the world should unite in praise.

5 out of 5 stars So far Tivoli gives great music!.......2007-05-31

I just purchased this radio in white. I bought it to use around the house, not for travel. Also since I just unpacked and plugged in the radio today, I have not had an opportunity to use the alarm clock or battery charging functions. Other reviews on this radio spoke of the quality of sound and of good reception. I had tried without success to listen to a favorite FM radio station where I live. The signal could be picked up in my car but not in radios inside our house. The Tivoli Songbook did the trick! I can now hear my favorite music! Although I am not quite the audiophiles that some reviewers are, the quality of sound is fine for me! Also I like the radio's design. It's sleek -- cool! The fact that it has the rubberized casing and is water resistant is icing on the cake. I also like the option of hanging it on the wall although mine will likely be sitting on a table or dresser instead. The station pre-sets are very convenient. Very nice job, Tivoli!

5 out of 5 stars nice way to listen to ipod.......2007-05-20

Great tuner. Pre-sets are very nice. Great way to listen to ipod. Need to buy connector wire to plug ipod into aux input, and can't charge ipod using this device, but speaker is fine and nice to have option of switching from ipod tunes to excellent radio tuner.

4 out of 5 stars Top Quality .... But at a Price........2007-03-22

Super sound, well thought-out controls, and more rugged than you might imagine. This is one fine radio. It has provided excellent performance in daily use since purchase six months ago. Only negative? Tivoli Audio's restrictive pricing policy on merchants.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2007-01-05

When my nearly 20 year old Sony Dream Machine cube style alarm clock radio finally gave out I decided to go in search of the best night stand alarm clock radio money could buy. The requirements were design style, sound quality, reception, ease of use, and a back light that goes completely off so that I can sleep at night. After a good deal of research I zeroed in on the Tivoli SongBook ($159) and the Sangean Sonido ($99). After trying both, here's what I've found:

The Tivoli SongBook has very attractive, modern styling (I prefer the black model), exceptional sound quality (like having a $1,000 Bose next to my bed), terrific reception (I don't even need to extend the antenna to get my favorite radio station clearly), very easy to set/update the clock and alarm times, and a back light which thankfully goes completely off. I took one star off for the SongBooks negatives - the alarm must be turned on everyday buy pushing down and holding the alarm button for a few seconds (easy to do, but I fear the day that I forget), no alarm snooze (I just turn the volume down), and the display, with or without it's beautiful blue back light turned on, is small and difficult to read, even from only a foot or so away while lying in bed.

The Sangean Sonido looks nice, though not as attractive a design as the SongBook, cost's $59 less than the SongBook, has a more readable screen than the SongBook (with back light that goes completely off), has an alarm snooze, and has an alarm that stays on from day to day. While I haven't made my final decision yet on which to keep, I'm strongly leaning toward the SongBook given the Sonido's shortcomings - to get my favorite station clearly I must extend the antenna directly upwards creating an unsightly mess, while better than a Sony Dream Machine the speaker audio quality is only about half as good as the SongBooks (I think this is what spoiled it for me), and even though the display is nicer when the radio alarm sounds the display shows the radio station number, not the time!

I hope Tivoli will improve the alarm functions in a future SongBook model update, until then I think it's still worth the $159 price tag (as long as I'm not late for a meeting because I forgot to turn the alarm on!)

Update: In the end I decided to go with the Sonido. I exchanged my first unit and the replacement had much better audio quality (though still not as good as the SongBook). The reception remains less than stellar, but while using the SongBook I was late for a meeting because of it's lack of full alarm function features, so it had to go.

3 out of 5 stars Travel radio? Not really........2006-12-02

Cool design, good sound quality, but if your travel plans require a passport, definitely not the radio for you. Not mentioned anywhere on the product specifications is the fact that this radio (as seemingly do most, if not all, Tivoli products, including the expensive iSongBook "travel" radio) requires a standard US external power source, so if you were to try to plug it in, say, in your hotel in Europe, most likely you'll have one less thing to worry about when packing to return home. And of course the warranty will not cover any damages from such "improper" use. Which makes me wonder whether advertising it as a travel radio and trumpeting its AM/FM radio features made specifically "for North America AND Europe" isn't a bit misleading, if not downright fraudelent. Look elsewhere if you really need a radio to travel with.

The SongBook is a new travel radio with built in alarm clock that is engineered to offer exceptional sound in the company's first-ever digital portable radio.

"The SongBook is one amazing portable clock radio," marvels columnist Gary Krakow at MSNBC.com's Tech News and Reviews for January 17, 2005. "As a matter of fact, it's an amazing radio period. I've even plugged it into my home hi-fi system and used it as an FM tuner. It sounds that good."

The one thing that isn't new about the SongBook is its sound quality. This portable boasts the same rich, full sonics that critics and consumers love in Tivoli's other audio products. The combination of advanced electronics, a wealth of features, and superb sound from a compact design makes the Songbook the ultimate travel radio. You'll want to make it your constant companion for trips around the hous

The 3x optical, 6x digital zoom provides more than enough zoom for most circumstances. A built-in flash provides red-eye reduction, auto, and fill modes. 2 out of 5 stars What are you using it for?.......2002-02-06

I bought the FD87 thinking that I would never run out of media on long trips; I could always go buy more disks, or erase some shots. Unfortunately I didn't consider how inconvienient that would be. Lugging 40 floppy disks around Disney Land along with a bulky camera was not fun. Taking it skiing was a whole other pain in the rear. Another problem is the inherent unreliability of floppy disks. I have lost many shots due to disk errors. I liked the Mpeg mode when I bought it, until I discovered you cannot stop the camera once you begin recording. This is stupid. The camera takes good pictures, if your activity is taking pictures. Do not, however, buy this camera if you plan to take pictures while involved in any other activity. It is very impractical. There are two good points though. The battery lasts forever and the camera formats disks about 20 times faster than a PC.

1 out of 5 stars High price and questionable quality make this a bad choice.......2002-01-26

Don't waste your money on a Mavica. I bought an FD-87 less than a year ago and it's broken -- again. Imagine that you bought a brand new car ... and then three months later, you had to pay $...one-fifth of the car's value... for a repair. Then, seven months later, the car breaks down again, and you're told it will cost ...about one-third of the car's original retail cost... to fix it. Who in their right mind would pay over half the original cost of a new car for repairs in less than a year? (There's a word for a car like that -- it's called LEMON).

Well, by analogy, that is precisely my situation. It's not worth getting my FD-87 repaired this second time around, having already shelled ... 20% of the camera's original retail price tag, the first time around. I discovered the hard way that Sony charges an obscene amount of money for labor, even though it's still within the one year warranty. (Sony's one-year warranty covers parts for the whole year, but labor is covered for ONLY 90 days!!!).

I admit that I, too, was originally impressed by the FD-87's ease of use and the convenience of floppy disk storage. However, quality issues aside, the size and sheer bulk of the camera is also a major drawback; smaller is really better. And the floppies -- they just don't hold enough photos. Even at the lowest resolution (640 x 480), I'd get maybe two dozen pix on a disk, and in no time, I had accumulated a huge pile of disks. Now that the price of smart or compact flash media has come way down, it makes more sense to get, say, a 64 or 128 MB smart card, which store a lot more photos and are so tiny in comparison. Even if I knew the FD-87 would never break down, I still wouldn't buy it, not in today's competitive digicam market. It's just not a good deal...

      3 out of 5 stars Sony MVC-FD87 Digital Camera.......2002-01-21

This camera was on sale for 350 dollars at Christmas time when is it going on sale again. If they can do it once they can do it again.

5 out of 5 stars Great camera- no memory cards needed!.......2002-01-10

The thing that attracted me most to this camera was the fact that I didn't have to buy one of those $100 memory sticks. I can, if I were planning to take a great deal of photos and don't want to carry extra disks around, but it's greta for people like me who just want to use it for recreational purposes.
I was at first turned off by the size, but this is part of the beauty of being able to save the files directly onto disk which inserts into the camera itself (which means the camera has to be the size of a floppy- which roughly it is). Besides, The size is a good fit to the hands and makes shaky hands less of a problem.
The zoom is great. You can really get close-up shots from a distance without compromising image quality or color. The display screen on the back of the camera is larger than on most, which makes it easier to choose which photos I want to keep/delete without popping the disk into the computer to take a closer look.
This camera has plenty of fun features to keep anyone entertained for a long period of time, and the battery life is great. The charger reharges the battery quickly when it does need to be charged.
The photo quality is great both indoors and out, night and day. There are differet settings for landscapes, people, etc, as well as light, and they do make a pleasing difference. This camera can be used in any situation.
Overall, I am very happy with my purhase. Sony is a terrific brand, after all.

      Amazon.com Review

The Tivoli Model One has been praised far and wide for its high-quality sound, small size, and cool, retro styling. We got our hands on a sample unit and came away impressed, just as many others have. Anyone who wants a compact, stylish radio with surprisingly good sound should give the Model One a look.

      Design
In many ways, the Model One is the culminating achievement of famed audio engineer Henry Kloss's long career. Designed from the ground up by Kloss, who passed away in 2002, the radio exudes understated class and elegant simplicity. We received the Platinum Series Model One, which features a hand-lacquered, high gloss dark walnut cabinet that is simply gorgeous. According to Tivoli, the genuine wood casing isn't just for looks as it provides "an acoustically inert housing" that maximizes the speaker's sound quality. At just over 8 inches wide, 4.5 inches high, and 5.25 inches deep, the Model One is about the size of a toaster turned on its side-- plenty small to fit on a desk, dresser, or nightstand.

The Model One's single rotary dial handles tuning for both AM and FM stations. It feels sturdy and smooth in the hand. The dial is designed to move between stations at a speed that is a bit slower than the speed at which the user turns the knob-- a 5 to 1 ratio, to be exact. This "ratio" dialing technique makes it far easier to tune stations accurately and quickly. It's a nice touch that sets the unit apart from other desktop radios.

The tuner band selection and volume dials are easy to control. Plus, they're well designed for hands of all sizes. A small LED power indicator, as well as an LED that helps determine signal strength, are positioned between the dials. We liked the light-colored face and dark lettering printed on the Platinum Series model we reviewed; it made for easy operation in dimly-lit rooms. The Model One's single, 3" driver is protected by a handsome metal speaker cover. Tivoli adds that the speaker is enhanced by a "multi-stage frequency contouring circuit that adjusts the speaker's output over half-octave increments." The result, Tivoli claims, is "musically accurate tonal balance and bass response."

The back of the unit features a coaxial antenna jack for the included FM antenna wire. While the Model One also has an internal FM antenna, Tivoli recommends using the supplied external one for tricky tuning in locales with a lot of stations crammed together. There's a handy switch for switching between the internal and external antennae. A standard 3.5mm headphone jack is also provided, as is a 3.5mm auxiliary line in port for plugging in your iPod or other music device. If you want to use the Model One as a component tuner-- not a bad idea given the overall quality and accuracy of the tuning circuitry-- Tivoli has provided a 3.5mm output port. The back panel also sports separate ports for AC and DC power, making the unit a great choice for boating or RV use.

      Listening Pleasure
As with the Tivoli iPal portable speaker system, we were initially skeptical about the performance of a small, one-speaker unit that only offers monaural sound. The reality is that most small two-speaker systems don't allow you to place the speakers very far apart anyway, and the Model One's rich, resonant sound more than made up for its lack of true stereo separation. Plus, the Model One is a single, elegant box with no annoying speaker cords.

While the Model One isn't designed to provide earth-shattering sound at high volume, it produces surprising clarity and fullness at normal listening levels. When turned all the way up, the unit's rich sound persists and we suspect that Tivoli engineered the Model One's volume level to max out before any distortion arises. If you don't need a lot of volume, the Model One delivers. As with the iPal, we were left scratching our heads and wondering how such great sound could come from such a little box.

The Model One's tuning accuracy is also impressive; we were able to dial in stations we didn't even know existed. Tivoli says this is due to the unit's discrete-component FM tuner technology, which was originally developed for cellular telephones. Whatever Tivoli has done here, they did it right; closely-spaced stations are a breeze to tune.

5 out of 5 stars Fine FM tone and reception.......2007-09-23

I am very happy with this radio, my second Model One. The FM reception is strong, tone is excellent, and the controls are easy. This is an excellent product.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant sound but a hyped up price.......2007-09-11

Warm sound and solid item but I suspect there is some pretty savvy hype here reflected in the price tag.

I like the radio and wouldn't return it but am pretty sure that more than $100 for a little one speaker am/fm mono is a bit ridiculous.

You're basically paying a premium for a fashionable item, but on the other hand cheap radios sound absolutely awful these days...that's why I have this radio playing on my desk right now.

      1 out of 5 stars Way overhyped.......2007-08-25

My rating is in strict relation to the retail price.

For $120 it's zero stars, for $100 it's one star, and so on. For $20 it would be five star rating. The $120 tag price is unjustified.

      THE GOOD:
The radio is relatively small and good-looking; it has its own elegantly simple style. It is offered in a variety of well-matched colors. The heavy wooden box (4 sides only) does have its appeal and helps it sound more like an "adult" radio. The tuning dial mimics precision instruments and has a nice feel to it. Jacks for auxiliary audio, external power supply and antenna come handy. The sound is pleasantly deep, and if one finds it too much, it can be dampened with a ball of tissue squeezed into the bass port (in the bottom) or with a piece of duct tape plastered over the hole.

      THE BAD:
Price is outrageously high; at $120 retail you don't get even a half of what you pay for. It is made in a large Asian country famous not so much for quality as for super cheap labor; and at this price it could be happily made in USA. The FM reception is very average and AM is outright bad. The analog tuner tends to drift over time. The tuning dial is off a few degrees. The switch is hard to turn. It's not stereo - at this level of fancy at least the phone jack could be stereo. The speaker outputs a continuous low-level hissing noise even when the volume is turned all the way down. I tried connecting external DC, but it doesn't eliminate or lower the hiss.

      THE UGLY:
I bought the Model One radio for a friend in Europe and intended to replace transformer in the power supply to make it compatible with 240 VAC. When I opened the radio I found a lot of rust on the few metal parts inside. It was ugly and cheap. In fact, I haven't seen anything that ugly in any other new radio. With so much rust it would probably fail in a short time. I sent for a replacement and the second one had the same hissing problem but was OK rust-wise.

Recommended? For $20-30 with no rust inside - yes!

5 out of 5 stars It's the Wood that makes it Good!.......2007-08-25

I have bought several radios in the past few months. My most recent one was the Boston receptor. I took it back because it just didn't seem to have it. It sounded great, but all that plastic made it feel cheap. The knobs felt like they would break off.

I went ahead and bought a Tivoli since it was on sale. I'm not a big fan of analog tuners, but I thought I would try it. It gets in more stations than the receptor. Tuning it is more enjoyable than I thought it would be.

The sound is magnificent for a mono radio at this price. The more I listen to it, the more I enjoy it. I find myself listening to songs that normally I would turn the station as soon as they came on. I think the wood makes all the difference in sound. I think it was designed to take full advantage of the wood acoustics. There is more to wood than one would think. Would you buy a plastic acoustic guitar?

      2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2007-08-24

I live in a suburb of New York City and AM (and sometimes FM) reception is poor indoors, although usually satisfactory with car radios. I bought this radio expecting to be able to listen to talk radio without the buzzing I usually get from various types of interference. After buying it around a year ago, I was immediately disappointed and have rarely tried to listen to it since then. The reason I'm writing my review now is that last night I noticed a Sony boom box (ZS-D5, apparently no longer available) in my basement and turned it on. I found that the AM reception, while not great, was satisfactory, so I brought the Model One downstairs to compare it in the same location. The Sony, to my knowledge not advertised as a great radio, was much better than the Model One! It could very well be that the Model One is great in some locations, but my experience indicates that miracles should not be expected from its reception. The design is attractive and the build quality seems good, but it's virtually useless to me.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Laptop.......2005-11-28

A great computer! Lightweight and well made. This is my second Toshiba laptop. Perhaps what I like most about the Tecra M2V is that rather than a bunch of buttons, bells and whistles, Toshiba has focused on making this lightweight and reponsive to the businessman/woman or serious student. I wrote my doctoral dissertation on it, using the docking station to hook up to a large monitor and standard keyboard after coming home from the university every day. Never let me down. Hint: buy the large double capacity battery in addition to the battery included.
