The recorder also features two Line Inputs, front A/V and IEEE1394DV Input, and RF Input/Output for dubbing content from multiple sources. DVD-R/CD-R/CD-RW compatible playback ensures discs made with a personal computer can be played back in the home theater system too.Amazon.com Product Description
The Toshiba D-R1 is not only a full-featured progressive-scan DVD player that handles DVDs, CDs, MP3 discs, and JPEG-filled recordable discs; it's also a DVD recorder equipped with VCR Plus+ for advance programming. The recorder can store up to eight hours of audio/video--whether broadcast programming or copies of your home movies to share with loved ones--on a 9.4 GB double-sided DVD-RAM disc and four hours on a write-once DVD-R or recordable DVD-RW.The D-R1 offers the flexibility of recording on both DVD-RAM--perfect for instant chapter access and for multiple rerecordings--as well as DVD-R, the most widely compatible of the many DVD formats (great for sharing camcorder footage with loved ones). DVD-RW compatibility lets you erase and rewrite, though relatively few players and computer drives will play back DVD-RWs. DVD-RAM discs can be read, written, and erased more than 100,000 times.
When recording, the D-R1 captures the first video frame and displays it as the chapter mark. You can then designate chapter marks with custom screen captures or thumbnail images of your choice. The D-R1 also lets you generate and save custom playlists using any title and chapter. Each list of desired footage can be separately titled and edited (for removal of, say, commercials) and then seamlessly played back.
Time Slip lets you use this DVD recorder like a personal video recorder, or PVR. Because of DVD-RAM's fast transfer rate, you can view the recorded portion of an ongoing program from the beginning, while still recording the show in progress.
The D-R1 features a 181-channel cable-compatible tuner and two-month, 32-event programming. Input your own program data or take advantage of built-in Gemstar VCR Plus+ technology for simplified programming. Battery backup retains programming data during power outages, and XDS auto clock set ensures that the recorder will never blink 12:00. In addition to recording new video content, the D-R1 lets you transfer and even enhance favorite video recordings to durable, space-saving discs--a terrific way to archive, preserve, and access your movies and family videos. A convenient front-panel IEEE-1394 input is perfect for direct digital transfers of miniDV camcorder footage.
For superlative playback, the D-R1 is equipped with a 10-bit/54 MHz video digital-to-analog converter capable of great color purity and detail. When connected to a high-definition or HD-ready television through its ColorStream Pro component-video outputs, the D-R1 delivers Toshiba's Digital Cinema Progressive picture. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, providing higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.
The D-R1 also performs 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. The deck's abundant connections include multiple composite- and S-video inputs and outputs, stereo analog (left/right) inputs and outputs (with a choice, on the audio input, of uncompressed PCM or Dolby Digital 2.0 encoding to conserve disc space), and a pair of digital-audio outputs (one coaxial, one optical) for use with a compatible digital surround receiver.
EAM (Enhanced Audio Mode) offers three audio-enhancements: "normal" mode equalizes regular digital-audio signals; "3-D" provides virtual surround sound through Spatializer N-2-2 circuitry; and "Dialogue" enhances the center-channel frequencies when you're playing Dolby Digital-encoded discs via the D-R1's analog audio outputs.
What's in the Box
DVD player/recorder, remote control, remote batteries, user's manual, stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable, and a RF coaxial video cable.

Disappointment........2004-04-05
Sometimes the D-R1s `finalization' process makes discs unreadable. This just kills me. I spend hours copying my home video to DVD-R, think I'm all done, I can watch it fine before the finalization process, but after I add a title and finalize it toasts the disc (supposedly high quality - Memorex). Nothing will read these discs, not even the unit itself. I've lost hours of my time this way.
One of the main reasons I bought this unit is because it has an IEEE1394DV input. Sadly, like many other features on this thing, this sucks. The quality of recordings made via the IEEE1394 is WORSE than those using the standard video input. It seems to pause, or hesitate, every now and again, which makes the audio sound terrible. My DV camera is a high quality Sony. I don't see this problem when I copy DV to my PC using an IEEE1394DV cable. So I guess this is the fault of D-R1.
Great DVD-Recorder, if you're patient........2004-04-05
You simply can not use this DVD-Recorder just like you would a VCR, where you can turn it on, and then immediately start recording something. I'll tell you how I figured that out. One time I set it to record a show that started at 9:00pm, so I put in a DVD-R and turned the power off. Well at exactly 8:50pm the unit turned on (at first I thought I did something wrong, but I didn't) and you could see the Zeros for the counter on the front of the unit (00:00.00). Then at exactly 9:00pm they started to count up to indicate that it was recording. Bottom line is that the Toshiba DR-1 needs about 10 minutes to warm up before it records something, otherwise...if you record right away...then you will get the problems that people have talked about. Once I learned to be patient and turn the unit on in advance (like if I am going to copy a VHS tape to DVD) I never had a problem with it again.
Oh and by the way, I have used VERY cheap DVD-R's like "Princo", "Ritek", "Optodisc", & "Dup-EZ" (mostly Princo) and they all work fine. Only thing is you should really go with what the manufacturer recommends for DVD-Ram, that being: Panasonic LM-AB120U (for 4.7gb single sided), and Panasonic LM-AD240U (for 9.4gb double sided).
There is one thing I am not crazy about, but I think that it happens to be this way with any DVD-Recorder. You can't do any editing (like cutting out commercials) if you use DVD-R, or DVD-RW (DVD-Ram only). You also can't edit if you are dubbing, like if you are recording from a VHS tape that has commercials in it and you want to pause them out while you make the DVD. It just doesn't work for some reason. But if you are recording a show on TV through the DVD-Recorders tuner, then "pause" will work just fine. I wish you could edit a little better, but I have learned to deal with it.
Lastly the "Timeslip" feature is just amazing (this too only works with DVD-Ram Discs). Let's just put it this way, if you are recording a show that is on from 3:00pm to 4:00pm and you get home early at 3:30pm, you can watch the very DVD-Ram disc that is currently recording from its 3:00pm start time and it will still finish the recording until 4:00pm. If that was a VCR you would either have to watch from 3:30 to 4:00, then at 4:00 rewind and watch the first half hour, or you would just have to wait and watch it all at 4:00. With DVD-Ram technology, you can watch the same disc that is currently recording.
That is amazing, and if you just leave a DVD-Ram disc in the unit while you are watching TV, you can pause live TV and rewind it and even fast forward it up to the point where you initially paused it. Then you can finish watching the program whenever you want.
So just have a little patience and you will love this DVD-Recorder from Toshiba. I think it's the greatest.
Expensive but useless.......2004-02-19
I'm very disappointed. Box is headed back to the vendor tomorrow.
Giant disappointment.......2004-01-27

One tough little bugger.......2004-02-28
Thanks for saving my data, even from myself Simpletech.
GREAT IDEA, BUT NO CIGAR.......2003-08-22
1. The first problem is that the male plug connector is too short. The drive won't seat in many USB slots without using the extension cord. If the plug was just a little longer--say, the same size as on the extension cord--it would fit.
2. The extension cord is way, way too long and bulky. The drive itself is small and easily carried in your pocket. But if you have to carry the extension cord with it, it's no longer easily portable.
Just extend the male plug (about 2/10 of a cent's worth of materials) and this would be an absolute winner!
Floppies be gone!.......2003-07-02
Being a writer, I like to work on my projects wherever I may be. Sometimes I like to work on my desktop PC, sometimes on my laptop at the park, coffee shop or when I travel to do research...and sometimes I like to work at my lunch break at my real JOB. Before I purchased this product, I had floppy diskettes and CD-RWs all over the place--no more!
Now, I carry my projects and all of my electronic research material with me. Everything fits and it's a no-brainer to install...just plug it in. I had to download drivers for my desktop PC as it is still running WIN98SE, but that only took a few moments and then I was good to go.
This is PERFECT for anyone who has an electronic project to do, but can't always work on the same computer.
It's faster to copy than burning a CD and it's also less wasteful. It's universal, unlike some large media like LS-120 Superdisks or Zip Disks...so, unless the PC is really old, you can use this. Furthermore, it's MUCH smaller than those other products and comes with a lariat so you can wear it around your neck if you're forgetful like I am. It also comes with a USB extension cord, in case you can't fit it into your open USB slot because of the drive's case's design.
Basically, you can't go wrong. This is highly recommended and really nice to have around.
One hint: don't run applications off of this. Use it for storage, but if you download a program onto it, copy the program onto the local hard disk of the PC you're using before you run it. The speed can't match the speed on a PC's local hard disk.
Expandable and small.......2003-05-07
Wow!.......2003-03-15
A few details . . .
Insert it into a USB port, wait about 2 seconds and WIN2K and WinXP (home and professional) pop up an acknowledgement of a new removable disk that it found. You use the USB drive just like a hard drive (drag and drop, etc.).
Here are some factoids I wish the product description (or picture) would have told me:
1) A 4 foot USB extension cable is included, which in my book eliminates any negative dealing with the fact that the USB ports on some computers are close together or very tight. (BTW I have a Compaq Presario with 2 USB's on the front and although it is tight the Bonzai works fine there without the extension, even with my mouse plugged in right beside it). Having to carrying a small cable is just not that big of deal folks.
2) It is very small. 2 1/2" long including the USB plug. 1 1/4" wide. 1/2" deep.
3) It is very light. About the weight of one Oreo Double Stuff cookie :)
4) The USB plug has a cap.
5) The case is heavy plastic.
6) A lanyard (i.e big shoestring looking thing that goes around your neck like a Referee's whistle) is included.
7) I have a 60MB zip file on my Bonzai right now which unzips faster than those on my hard drive. Did I mention the Bonzai is fast?
8) The whole thing seems solid and well made.
BTW, a guy I work with and I did some research. We both concluded that Bonzai is the answer to our goal of a slick way to quickly move files between computers, with zero install requirements (at least on Win2K and WinXP). He is very envious of me right now since he opted for the Sandisk Cruzer instead of the Bonzai (because Best Buy didn't have the Bonzai). I picked Bonzai and was delighted to find that amazon.com has it. The Cruzer is about 4-5 times bigger, and doesn't feel nearly as solid in my view.
I opted for the 128MB model instead of the 256MB or 512MB models for two simple reasons: 1) 128MB is enough for me for now (equal to 88 diskettes), 2) the price of Secure Disk (SD) is bound to keep tumbling so I'll pick up a 256 and/or 512 once the 1GB (and beyond) SD's come out and drive down their cost of their little brother and sister :)
Enjoy the Bonzai!

Toshiba takes digital light processing (DLP) technology into the future with the 52-inch TheaterWide 52HM84 HD-ready rear-projection TV. The 16:9 52HM84 uses a proprietary system called TALEN (Toshiba Advanced Light Engine); based on the Texas Instruments HD2+ DLP chip, it enhances brightness and contrast while keeping the 1,280 x 720 progressive resolution (720p). Toshiba's TheaterWide TVs challenge direct-view CRT models when it comes to reproducing deep blacks and details in dark or shadowy scenes.
|
PixelPure encompasses eight different processing circuits. Among its components are 6.2- million-pixel oversampling (for higher perceived resolution), real-speed progressive scanning (which uses additional sampling points to create smoother diagonal lines), a Magic Square algorithm (for smooth, natural color gradation), Dynamic Contrast Enhancer (for higher perceived contrast and increased color saturation), and Color Detail Enhancer (to maintain fine image detail in color-saturated areas).
DLP technology uses an optical semiconductor, known as the Digital Micromirror Device, or DMD chip, to digitally manipulate light. The chip contains a rectangular array of up to 1.3 million microscopic mirrors, each measuring less than one-fifth the width of a human hair. A DMD panel's micromirrors are mounted on tiny hinges that enable them to tilt either toward the light source (on) or away from it (off), creating a light or dark pixel on the projection surface. The bit-streamed image code entering the semiconductor directs each mirror to switch on and off up to several thousand times per second, enabling the mirrors to reflect pixels in up to 1,024 shades of gray.
The HD2+ DLP chip ensures an ultraclean image by filling in the dimples, or vias, in the mirrors to avoid stray light. It increases both brightness and contrast, resulting in an impressive color-corrected contrast ratio (2,200:1) at 1,100 ANSI lumens. The set's TheaterFine HD Super Fine Pitch screen reduces the physical space between the lines on the lenticular screen, resulting in a finer, sharper, more detailed picture.
Toshiba's DFine Hi-Speed VSM (velocity scan modulation) improves contrast and overall picture sharpness, while the CableClear DNR+ digital noise reduction optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable, further eliminating video noise ("snow") for a clean, crisp image. Cinema Mode circuitry (3:2 pulldown switch) identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.
A 3-D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction helps eliminate dot crawl and color bleed and significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricately detailed scenes. Color temperature controls allow you to adjust white balance. The Warm setting reduces the color temperature to an NTSC standard 6,500 degrees Kelvin and delivers a redder image that is ideal for display in a dimly lit room. Medium and Cool setting provide a progressively bluer image for the best picture as room light levels are increased.
The 52HM84 has plenty of inputs for connecting all your audio and video components. In back you'll find two RF, two composite video, two S-Video, and two HD ColorStream component video, as well as a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) digital input. HDMI is an uncompressed, all-digital audio-video interface that supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus eight-channel digital audio--all on a single cable. A set of front composite and S-video inputs make hooking up a game console or camcorder a snap.
Other features include HD Window dual-tuner POP (picture-on-picture) with PIP sound for listening to two programs simultaneously, the new Radiance DC lamp with high brightness and lower power modes for extended life, individual audio-video settings by input type, sleep and wake timers, Real Speed progressive scanning to create smoother diagonal lines, the Color Transient Improver for sharp transitions on color changes without bleeding, and the Color Detail Enhancer to maintain fine image detail in color-saturated areas.
Aside from the 20-watts-per-channel stereo speaker system, the 52HM84 uses MTS for programming with stereo sound, and SAP for receiving a second audio track in another language. Meanwhile, SRS WOW combines 3-D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass (yet another low-frequency enhancement) and Focus (which clarifies voices). The StableSound volume leveler eliminates drastic volume spikes while changing channels or when channels go to a commercial break.

The last monitor you will ever need.......2004-03-27
Awe inspiring PC and HDTV home theater combo.......2003-05-13
Contrary to both Samsung's manual and Radeon's manuals, but in agreement with comments on countless mailing lists, both the Radeon 9000 and 9700 Pro models with 128MB memory were able to drive this monitor at full 1920x1200 resolution with DVI. The difference between DVI inputs and VGA inputs is night and day, with DVI being far superior in terms of sharpness. The S-video inputs are quite reasonable, and TV images look as good on this monitor as on other analog TVs, and provide a means to play VHS from from VCR without needing S-video inputs on my computer. But DVDs look much much better when played on the computer's DVD player through a decent progressive software decoder like WinDVD coupled with the graphics card's built-in rescaler. In fact, it's one of the best DVD images I've ever seen. To get the best sound, I take the computer's S/PDIF digital output directly into my AV receiver, thus bypassing my computer's sound card entirely.
All in all, this is a great monitor for home theater and one of only a handful of monitors that run 1920x1200 resolution. Others include Sony's PremierePro P232 23"; Samsung's replacement for this model, the 241MP 24", which also has component video input; and the Apple Cinema HD 23", which requires a connector dongle for DVI input and has no hardware control or S-video input. The Samsung 210T is an identical monitor feature-wise, and uses the same panel technology and same size pixels, but provides a conventional 1600x1200 aspect ratio. Note that it does not come with the speakers, but then I wanted to use my serious home theater speakers anyway.
