The RD-XS32 DVD player/recorder from Toshiba combines a versatile video recorder and a high-end DVD player with a clear, realistic picture and warm, natural sound. The RD-XS32 is the perfect next-generation upgrade from your old VCR and a powerful addition to your home theater.
The multidrive recorders on the RD-XS32 allow you to record onto an internal 80 GB hard disk drive (HDD), a DVD-R disc, or rerecordable DVD-RW and DVD-RAM discs. The HDD holds up to 103 hours of programs, and you can rapidly dub shows from the HDD onto a DVD. A high-speed dub of a recording from the HDD onto a DVD-R disc can be completed 24 times faster than the length of the program. In other words, two hours of recording can move onto a disc in a matter of minutes. DVD-R copies of recordings made by the RD-XS32 will play on almost all DVD players and DVD-compatible computers.
Toshiba's time-slip playback feature allows you to watch a program that is being recorded from the beginning while the rest of the show records. You can also use the time-slip feature to pause a live broadcast that you are recording, and then resume watching it from where you left it, whenever you want.
Setting up a recording is simple. The RD-XS32 uses Gemstar's VCR Plus technology, which lets you select the programs you want to record by name, without worrying about setting the right time and channel. You can schedule up to 32 different shows with this timer recording feature.
The programs that you have recorded are logged into an adjustable menu that displays the date, time, and channel that you recorded. You will also see a still-video image of the show you recorded in the menu. You can rename the listings and create chapters within the recordings that allow you to easily skip to your favorite scenes or to dub a cleaned-up copy of the show you've recorded onto DVD. The easy-to-use menu also features a live action window that lets you monitor the program you are currently recording or playing.
In addition to high-quality recordings, you'll get the most out of your DVD library as well. The RD-XS32 utilizes Toshiba's ColorStream Pro progressive-scan video technology to yield vivid colors, clean resolution, and reduced onscreen distortion. The RD-XS32 uses digital cinema progressive scanning to reproduce your DVDs in theaterlike clarity. While the RD-XS32 is compatible with both analog and digital televisions, you will get the optimum effect by using the player with a high-definition-compatible television.
In addition to playing a full range of DVDs, the RD-XS32 plays CDs and MP3 audio files, so you can enjoy your favorite music. You can also view digital JPEG photos from CDs created in your computer with the RD-XS32.
The RD-XS32 features rear-panel composite audio and video inputs, and RCA inputs on the front panel to connect your camcorder for dubbing onto DVD. An additional digital IEEE1394 Firewire jack is included on the front panel for an instant connection with digital camcorders. The Firewire connection automatically synchs up with your camcorder and creates a customized onscreen menu for dubbing.

The Toshiba RD-XS32 does have its idiosyncrasies, and does require patience as it sometimes balks, but for all-round functions like chapter editing to combine parts of recordings, or to get rid of commercials or other unwanted material---it ROCKS! I've had mine for about a year and have burned hundreds of dvds of sports events, History and Discovery channel programs, Turner Classic Movies, you name it. Unlike Tivo (although it has a Tivo function as well), you can make multiple copies of dvds to share with family and friends. Editing and compiling your material to burn to disc is much faster and easier than using computer programs such as Nero (although I use the excellent Nero as well and am pleased with that). One tip: The dvds are formatted slightly differently from commercials dvds, so when you burn, make sure to set chapters of ten minutes or less, for easier navigation from the main menu. We have a Toshiba dvd player that plays them with all the functions of commercial dvds, but other dvd players may not "fast forward" more than 2X, and may not reverse. On the computer the dvds have every available control function, though, so your friends may prefer to play them using a laptop.
My husband will be on a remote Pacific island on a scientific project this summer---with no tv reception. I am burning dozens of discs of favorite programs for him to take.
These RD-XS32s are getting harder to find, so if you have an opportunity, grab one!
Toshiba RD-XS32 bought a little over 2 yrs back at Best Buy........2007-01-05
This is a great machine once you get used to it. It does have some flaws - but the postives outweigh the negatives if you have a home entertainment system especially, big screen TV, etc. I bought this unit open box for half price at Best Buy a little over a couple of years back. like I said, it does have issues. I had to request a software upgrade about a year ago from Toshiba so it would be more compatible with a larger variety of recording mediums. It is still picky about what it records on, and you must obey what the manual says, otherwise there will be no recording. sometimes, when I am playing a commerically bought dvd it sticks,midway through the movie I am watching and says "check the disc, it may be damaged, or needs to be cleaned." lately this happens about 1-2 times a month. I have to go to a cheaper dvd player in the house, to watch the movie. so - a big problem here. The reasons I keep it are: high speed dubbing (even higher machines by Pioneer do not offer this feature), can cut out commercials on hard drive recorded content before dvd burning (can't do this on the Pioneer DVR 57H - which is way higher). Things I'd change if I could about it, would be that it would load a dvd faster, and accept a larger variety of recording speed discs, and that it wouldn't hang up in the middle of movies that I am watching. Otherwise, great machine if you like the features it offers for recording. I have considered sending it back to Toshiba to look at/repair, but will wait to see how it runs over the next few months. I've looked at other machines on the market now, and can't find anything that I'd consider is comparable in features I like to this one.
Excellent unit - a little confusing to operate.......2006-04-01
The on-disk editing and high speed dubbing to DVD are great features.
Video quality is super. I was concerned about the compatibility of the copied DVD with another DVD player. It plays with no problems on my standard DVD player and the video looks great.
My only complaint is that the remote control has several control buttons for editing menu, quick menu, easy navigate etc. I would prefer that they consolidate the features into fewer buttons so it's not so hard to remember which button to press for the option I want.
The unit has so many features, I should have realized I could not just start operating the remote control intuitively. The manual is somewhat helpful but it still takes patience and experimentation to learn how to operate the unit.
I mainly got the unit to be able to edit videos and remove commercials before copying to DVD. This unit still requires several steps to complete the full process, but overall is much easier and quicker than using a PC and editing software to do the edits and copies.

Pro I use this machine Hard drive as a surviellance recording, copy TV shows as well as copy VHS. This machine has been performing up to exceptation.

I've had this RD-XS32 for almost 5-months now, and I'm still totally thrilled with this purchase. I'm a computer-geek, having ripped/edited video and DVD on a PC for a few years proved good background training for this unit (it basically feels like a PC, not a VCR). For newbies, this has all the same basic functions as a VCR. But, for people who want to do some serious video editing (chaptering and removing unwanted scenes) this thing rocks.
Downsides to this include a manual an inch-thick and a multi-function menu-system with a zillion options. Also, don't buy this if your TV doesn't have video-inputs (this only has coax throughput, there's no RF-modulator for channel 3/4). But, for those willing to learn, you can make this do some really cool things! I dropped-down my record quality for most-everything TV-related I record (1.4MB/s), and I had something like 85-hours of programs recorded on it before it started yelling at me (and the quality was fine). The "timeslip" chase playback is useful (play back while you're still recording), but the most-useful feature is recording one show while you play something you've already recorded from the content menu.
I am so thrilled with this unit (and, I don't know what others are talking about with the "black"-problem, I've made hundreds of DVD-R's off TV and my own Mini-DV camcorder, and had no problem... what they may be explaining is copy-protection of copywrited DVD-movies and they deserve to not see good copies), I'm about to buy another one for a different room!

Pretty good radio for the money........2007-09-06
I have this radio (this is just the radio, not the one with the CD player)and don't really have any major complaints. I think it sounds pretty good; I wasn't expecting a stereo in the shower! The only little thing I have noticed, is that when the batteries get low, it is difficult to turn on and off. In other words, you might have to push the on/off button several times to make it turn on or off. But if the batteries are strong, then you don't have that problem. But most battery operated items DO perform better when they have good, strong batteries in them. I just make it a point to use good, alkaline batteries. The better the batteries, the less often you have to change them. In fact, those new titanium batteries last a LONG time! Some of the other reviewers said this radio needs batteries too often. Well maybe it does, but I don't think it is any more often that any other battery-operated items I have. My MP3 player seems to need batteries more often than I expected, too. I just stock up on batteries when I catch them on sale.

First off, I'm not under 13 or whatever, I just didn't want an account, BUT about the radio: IT'S AWESOME!!! Don't listen to these other people, because the volume goes up REALLY loud so you're able to hear it, and it also plays the stations well without static and the batteries last a while. I don't understand why this product is getting so many poor reviews. Hopefully you'll take my word for it. I love it. I got this for Christmas of '05 and it's currently Feb. '06 and the batteries and everything are properly functioning still!! Great buy!!!!

This horrible product delivers distorted sound and needs batteries much too often. I'm looking for a better one and will throw this in the garbage which is where it belongs. DON'T BUY IT!!!
Wet Tunes Shower Am/FM Radio.......2003-10-21
I attended a Cancer relay and one of the gifts given to Cancer Survivors was a "Salton Wet Tunes" shower radio. Turning on the radio took a good 1-2 minutes and if you were not careful, it would turn off. After one week, it would not turn on at all. I know the batteries are good, because the clock works. When, and I use that word very sparingly, it worked the reception was so poor I could hardly hear with the volumn up high. I was extremely dissapointed in the product. I'm happy I didn't purchase the product. Having said that, I'm sure the group that put together the relay will not request that paticuliar product again. One would think a manufacture would donate a product that is workable because, what better "free" advertisment could one get? This advertisment for "Wet Tunes", went south. This product, "Salton Wet Tunes" is in the trash.
I hope no one else purchases one.

I bought this shower radio last year. It did not play CDs, but the batteries died after only a few uses. I don't know if it was defective or if the constantly running clock caused the battery death. I was very disappointed and returned it. Another shower radio that was much cheaper and didn't have a clock runs forever on batteries.

Solid Proof of Concept.......2005-02-05
Being one of the first Wi-Fi VoIP (SIP) phones on the market, ZyXEL Prestige 2000W is a solid proof of concept that is deemed by many to see explosive growth. With this unit, ZyXEL seems to be targeting two markets - a cordless phone for corporate SIP environments and residential broadband VoIP services (like Vonage). The unit gets 3 stars for actually working in one deployment scenario, but lacking many required features.
We have received several units from ZyXEL in October to investigate a deployment scenario with Asterisk PBX as a SIP server. The phone picked up a signal of our internal 802.11b/g wireless network with no problems. However, the initial attempt to register with Asterisk server was unsuccessful. Upgrading firmware to version 'f' solved the registration problem and now we could successfully move on to evalute phone's functionality.
Positive impressions:
1. Reception of Wi-Fi signal is good and is on par with other wireless devices (we compared to notebooks with WiFi cards).
2. Sound quality is very good and is comparable to your average cellphone.
3. Battery life is decent and will handle several hours of talktime. Standby mode is not as effective as with your modern cellphone, therefore the phone has to be charged every night.
4. Unit is fairly compact and lightweight (about the size of an older Nokia cellphone).
Unfortunateluly, this is where the positive impressions end. To give ZyXEL some credit, core technology seems be in good shape and the unit lacks any serious drawbacks. However, many important features one would expect in a cordless communication device are underimplemented or not implemented at all:
1. Phone looks and feels old, like one of the cellphones from the 90's. Screen is tiny and only has four lines.
2. Handsfree - both speakerphone and headset ports exist, but are not functional.
3. Battery compartment is very hard to open. Not that one should have to take out the battery that often, but this is the only way to reboot the phone when it occasionally locks up.
4. Only one incoming line is implemented.
5. Phone registers to a SIP server only upon bootup. Therefore, if the connection to the server is lost during normal operation, the phone will have to be rebooted.
6. Hold, transfer, and conference buttons are not implemented. As is the MWI (Message Waiting Indicator).
7. Wireless security is underimplemented. On paper, WEP up to 128 bits is possible, in reality that means you will have to punch in the keys manually (use the web interface for that) and quality of sound will deteriorate. WEP keys are easy to break anyways, so that leaves you with MAC Address filtering - wait, that's easy to spoof also. So do not bother yourself with security on this phone.
8. You have to know your SSID to access the wireless AP. No autodiscovery and no ability to store several SSIDs and to connect to whichever one is found first.
9. The lists for missed and dialed calls exist, but are out of order (at least chronological one). Plus, no details are offered.
10. Ringtones are godawful and cannot be changed.
In summary:
1. Corporate clients will be turned off by the lack of multiple lines, transfer and hold functionality, and lack of security.
2. Service providers, like Vonage, seem to prefer analog adapters to end devices that talk native VoIP protocols. In the case of Vonage, one may be able use Prestige 2000W on their network using credentials issued for the SoftPhone service. But given the extra charge for the service as well as the premium price of Prestige 2000W itself, the economics are against such scenario. It is much more economical for residential customer to purchase an analog or digital cordless phone in 900Mhz or 5.8Ghz spectrum and use it through VoIP provider's telephone adapter.
Unless you have an extra $250 laying around and like your technology raw, patience will be rewarded. New and improved WiFi SIP Phones are starting to show up. For example, Hitachi Cable's IP-5000 looks more modern and supports advanced security features like WPA and EAP-TLS (there are reports, however, of poor firmware design and incompatibility). Cisco 7920 seems to be dominant in the large corporate sector and may capture small and medium-business markets if they finally release SIP firmware and work on lowering the $500+ price-tag.
Motorola is releasing a CN620, which as a hybrid GSM/WiFi SIP phone for the corporate market.
There is a lot of development in this area and kudos to ZyXEL for braving the turbulent waters. Hopefully, they can improve on hardware design, add more firmware features and turn the ugly duckling that Prestige 2000W is into a beatiful swan.

I ordered the product from Amazon yesterday with Ground UPS, and received it today. There goes an applause to Amazon!
About the product: It is very simple, but seems to serve the purpose: send and receive calls. the sound quality is excellent. entering the information to access the service provider took approximately one minute. After you have a connection between the phone and the router, you then need to enter the rest of the information by accessing the phone's settings from your computer's browser.
I live in a Manhattan apartment building where I share a wireless connection. The router is located on the 6th floor. I live on the 8th floor. The quality is not exactly the same as using the phone next to the wifi router, but still acceptable. I will solve that problem by adding a signal booster to the router.
I signed up with BroadVoice, which only offers SIP based VOIP services. This phone only works on SIP based systems. Major VOIP providers provide SIP as an additional service that costs you more over your regular VOIP service fee, and comes with limited minutes. There are many other companies that are out there offering SIP, just google "sip providers" and you will find a lot.
I could use a free software phone to access these servers, but I really appreaciated talking on a real phone and hear the difference in quality of sound, instead of having to wear a headset and stare at the computer screen. Believe me, it makes a way lot of difference.
I'm originally from Turkey, currently living in the US. It costs me to call Turkey around 45 cents a minute from my cell. These services cost you from 10 cents to 20 cents, depending on whether you call a landline or a cell number. Although the phone is pricey, I will be saving a lot in a few months by lowering my cellphone plan and using the 2000W for national and international calls. I still get call waiting, rejecting a blocked number, voice mail and so forth. I was even able to get a (212) area code number, which has become a rarity. I will pay about $21 for calling unlimited national and 21 international countries (no Turkey is not one of them, useless for now, but you never know).
Initial charge to signup with the service cost $32.04 including that $21.00. So there is no reason to complain, even the service fails once in a while (not yet happened). Let me be ridiculous and assume that I call turkey 20 hours a month. It would cost me $540 with cell carrier, and $120 with this one.
If you ask, why didn't you go for one of the major VOIP providers, my answer will be, I do not want to see any more bulky devices on the floor. Also, I would be required to install a converter in order to be able to use a regular phone. In addition to all of these issues, I would have to buy a high end cordless phone to have a clear sound upstairs. At the end the cost would be much higher.
I think this product is really good for a starter. I am pretty sure that many others will enter the market in the near future, as Vonage is planning on releasing their own wifi phones.
I can also take this phone with me whereever there is a wireless hotspot available. The only problem is that some places such as Starbucks use TMobile hotspot, which requires you to download a piece of software that connects you to their network. In that circumstance I do not think that this phone will be usable. But, since there are a lot of people who do not secure their wifi connections, I am sure you will find a place in your area to enjoy this phone and call your friends and family as if you are calling them from your cellphone.

For those who may be confused about Voice over IP services, this is real phone that can dial and receive calls with any other real phone in the Word unlike PC to PC voice connections that can only be placed between PC clients. And as for any VoIP connection, it requires service provider to provide connection with phone networks. Vonage soft phone plan cost about $12 per month with free local calls and cheap international calls, and for that price you get full phone service just like you would get from cell phone or land line company. And the best part - you can use the same service (and the same number) from any wireless internet Access Point in the world. Imagine that you live in NY and can make and receive the same free unlimited local calls with your NY number while traveling to London, Paris or Beijing from any Wi-Fi internet connection.
That is the theory anyway, in reality customization of the pone and understanding of IP networking may be required to set up the phone for different locations.

Originally I thought this was a phone that would let me use VoIP technology to make free phone calls to anywhere in the world. Wrong! As the italic fineprint on Amazon points out, you must subscribe to a VoIP service plan (e.g., Vonage). These plans are usually quite expensive, and have restrictions as well. Plus the phone itself is so expensive. If you are looking for a free VoIP solution, this is absolutely NOT it.
For now, I guess you should stick to a PC VoIP program like Skype or MSN Messenger.
