Straight from the box, Toshiba's SD-1200 DVD player appears to be a lightweight machine--but appearances are deceiving. After plugging it in and letting it spin, we were overwhelmed by this player's audio-video performance.

Although it weighs only 6.5 pounds, the SD-1200 reflects Toshiba's proven track record for building high-quality video components. This is a solid DVD player with sturdy rear-panel inputs and outputs. The SD-1200 provides only a single coaxial digital output and a pair of standard RCA analog-audio outputs (There is no optical digital-audio output.) Although we'd rather see both optical and coaxial, our preference for coaxial digital cables makes it easier to ignore the absence of the optical output--especially since optical connectors have a tendency to pull loose.

The SD-1200's back panel accommodates composite- and S-video cables. Toshiba, which has been at the forefront of promoting component video, also offers ColorStream component jacks. Hooking the SD-1200 DVD player up to a TV with component-video inputs should render a decidedly superior picture, with more natural colors and less video noise. We used the SD-1200's S-video output, however, and saw no compromise in color fidelity. Edges were especially well defined, adding depth to the picture on our 54-inch rear-projection television. Toshiba offers a video black-level enhancement mode that you can access from the onscreen menu. Although it's designed to increase contrast and edge definition, we noticed little improvement with the enhancement; however, we didn't see any degradation either.

Like most DVD players on the market today, the SD-1200 accommodates Dolby Digital as well as Digital Theater Sound (DTS). Unlike some of the low-end models we've tested, however, the SD-1200 performed flawlessly in both DTS and Dolby Digital. We fed the SD-1200 a hefty stream of DTS-encoded movies, surround-sound concert videos, and demo discs, and the player never missed a beat. Our concert videos sounded superb in 5.1-channel surround sound, and the thundering bass and crackling explosions in our action movies portrayed a realism unmatched by lesser DVD players.

For the sake of simplicity, Toshiba opted for a minimalist front-panel design on the SD-1200--but to a fault, as this leaves all but the most basic functions up to the remote control. Although less is certainly more when it comes to front-panel buttons, we would at least like to be able to access the onscreen menu from the player in case the remote is lost or rendered inoperable.

The remote is a pleasure to use, and while the buttons may prove too tiny for large fingers, we like the layout. Left/Right and Up/Down buttons are centrally placed, with the Enter button in the middle. The Open/Close and Power buttons are at the very top, where they belong.

If you don't like the distraction of LED lights, you'll be happy to know that the SD-1200 allows you to dim or deactivate the panel display. You'll also like the onscreen bit-rate meter, which allows you to gauge the video bit-rate allocation at any given second while you're watching a DVD. The bit-rate bar fluctuates from less than 1 to 10, depending on the complexity of a given scene, with action sequences generally measuring between 8 and 9.5. This isn't a feature you'll want to leave on while you're enjoying a movie, but it's cool and thoughtful, and is the icing on the cake for this DVD player.

Performance-wise, the SD-1200 is one of the best DVD-video players we've tested in its price range. --Eric Gill

This player did not last long........2006-07-23

This was the DVD player in the living area which we do not use often. We've only had the player less than two years and it says Disc Error no matter which DVD you put in it. Movies that worked previously do not work now. I read the entire manual looking for some trouble-shooting advice and found nothing referring to Disc Error. Then I finally called Toshiba's 800 # and was told to unplug the unit for a few minutes and then plug it back in so it could "reset". I did this several times, for up to an hour at a time and nothing changed. I asked the Toshiba rep on the phone what else could be done and they said nothing except they could look up the nearest service center. Assuming the repair bill would be at least $100 I have since gotten rid of it and bought another DVD player (of a different manufacturer and spent $102) that has a much better record of reliability and long life, plus many other features that the Toshiba did not have.
If anyone knows anything about the "disc error" message I would love to know what it is and I could fix this one to give to my niece.

This player had good picture quality and sound, however, the unit boke just over a year after purchase. The picture still works but the audio no longer comes through. It is going to cost $150 to repaire and the warranty just ran out. Needless to say I will not purchase a toshiba as my next player.

Over 2 1/2 years old and still plays like new!.......2003-03-16

I bought the SD1200 over 2 1/2 yeaers ago and was immediatly impressed with both the picture and sound quality of this unit. The ColorStream output is spectacular when using component video cables. When hooked up to my home theatre system with an Onkyo receiver, the digital 5.1 and DTS modes are simply awesome. This DVD player has played 99.9% of all disks Ive put into it error free. My only complaints are the lack on an optical output and the small buttons on the remote. If not for these minor issues I would have given it a 5 star rating! As far as durabilaty, my player has for sure played at least 500 dvd's, and still performs as good as the day I bought it. I paid around [$$$] for this player back in 2000, but to get it now for [$$] is just too sweet!

I ordered my Toshiba SD 1200 in August of 2000. It was broken out of the box. After 6 weeks of waiting, I got it back and it never quite worked properly after that. Nothing you could take it back for -- it was quirky and unreliable, deciding on one day that it could not handle layer changes, on others that it would not read a disk that it read fine the previous day. Well, last night when I ejected a disk, it literally flew out of the tray, still spinning. Now the unit won't do a thing except sit there. The warranty has expired, of course. I will never buy a Toshiba product again. If nothing else, they have quality control issues.

The principal point I wish I'd heard before buying this generally excellent player: You can't play most DVD's without the remote. So if you've misplaced the remote, no movie. Most of us just put in the disc and hit play, so one more button (enter) on the player would have made such a difference in convenience.

The mentioned remote is itself poorly designed. The buttons are all small and black and mostly rectangular, poorly revealed by a flat dark surface and even smaller type, whereas most remotes now are multicolored and contoured for comfort. The DVD's response time to commands is only OK.

The single biggest factor in our choice was price, and it plays DVD's fine and hasn't broken in a year. But for a modicum of effort and minuscule cost Toshiba could have made the player much more pleasurable to use. If necessary, I would spend an extra [money] to alleviate these noted concerns.

Okay, not great.......2005-11-26

I've had this DVD player for about 2 years. We bought specifically to keep my kid occupied on planes. We travel quite a bit so it's seen a lot of the country and I've put it through it's paces. I think the best way to describe this DVD player is adequate. The picture is fine, not specatular. The sound is fine, but again not spectacular. The thing that really irks me is that it's rubber skin gives you the impression that it can hold up to a beating, it can't. Just a little bump and the movie resets. Which makes it impossible to use in a car. I would not reccomend buying one of these unless you enjoy torturing your child by restarting their movies every time your car hits a pothole.

Two Tours And Still Going.......2005-05-30

I purchased this DVD player during my last tour in Iraq. Here I am, on a second tour, and this player is still going strong.
Toshiba has done an outstanding job with this DVD Player. It's durable, can take a beating (ran over by a vehicle, on one occasion), and has endured the heat and sand.
I would highly recommend, anyone desiring a rugged player designed for travel, this is the portable player you should purchase.

Not very good quality.......2005-02-07

I bought this dvd player a year ago and can't remember a time it ever worked correctly. It skips and freezes a lot (and thats when its placed on a table or other stable surface). You can only imagine what it plays like in the car.

Purchased unit at retailer for $500 based on Toshiba's previous quality reputation. Battery would not charge after 3 months of extremely light use & hinge broke, requiring a screw driver to be used to open it.
