Toshiba SD-2200 DVD Player
Manufacturer: Toshiba ProductGroup: CE Binding: Electronics Accessories:
Product Features:
ASIN: B00004RFHD |
Product Description
Enjoy the latest DVD movies with this Toshiba DVD-Video Player with Dual Disc Twin Tray. Toshiba designed the SD2200 to be a cornerstone of Audio/Video performance and versatility. An advanced high-resolution D/A converter delivers superior picture performance, and the ColorStream component video outputs provide unsurpassed signal transfer and display quality. The advanced picture performance of the SD2200 is complemented by a built-in Dolby Digital decoder, DTS capability and Spatializer N-2-2 virtual surround sound for the absolute best sonic performance on any home theater.Amazon.com Review
Not long ago, we would have considered Toshiba's SD-2200 a steal. After all, this DVD player performs flawlessly when it comes to audio-video processing, resulting in good picture quality and dynamite sound. The SD-2200 also has dual-disc capacity, includes a built-in Dolby Digital decoder, and plays High Definition Compatible Discs (HDCDs). However, other manufacturers have caught up to Toshiba's lead in the DVD player arena, producing players of equal quality and reducing the SD-2200 to a good value rather than a steal.Toshiba has taken a step backwards in the SD-2200's design by offering a joystick-style remote control that inhibits your ability to easily access menus and perform setup functions.
If the presence of a built-in Dolby Digital decoder appeals to you, however, the SD-2200 is worth its weight. In addition to offering 5.1-channel audio jacks, it has optical and coaxial digital-audio outputs, as well as composite-, component-, and S-video outputs.
The front array of buttons and LEDs center around the disc tray, which loads a single disc at a time. We found the tray mechanism to be somewhat flimsy and prone to breakage. The automated mechanism also makes a disturbing humming noise for several seconds as it goes through its motions.
A pair of open/close buttons--labeled 1 and 2--are on the right of the disc tray. (Curiously, there are no matching open/close disc buttons on the remote control.) A pair of LEDs flanks the left side of the disc tray. With two DVDs in the machine, a red LED indicates that the first disc is in standby or play mode, while a green LED shows that a second disc is "on deck." Combined with the red power indicator, we found these lights distracting in our darkened home theater. Given the fact that the SD-2200 has a front-panel display-off switch, it seems counterproductive for Toshiba to include three brightly colored LEDs.
Other front-panel operating buttons include play, pause, stop, skip, and a redundant disc select button. Unfortunately, there is no menu access button in case the remote is lost or rendered inoperable. We also wished this unit had a headphone jack.
The onscreen setup display is identical to other Toshiba models. A button on the remote brings up a bar at the top of the display device that hosts icons for language, picture, audio, display, and operation. Although all of these setup functions are intuitive, the remote makes it difficult to easily access them.
The remote's "joystick" is actually a small toggle button that's designed to replace the standard up/down and left/right arrow buttons on most remotes. The toggle switch is overly sensitive and, when you are moving inside a given menu, it tends to move on to the next icon or accidentally select the wrong setting. For example, in picture setup, each time we attempted to select the 16:9 aspect ratio, we inadvertently moved over to the audio menu without completing our mission.
Fortunately, once we completed all our menu selections and dimmed the lights, the SD-2200 exhibited the usual high-quality sound and image we've come to expect from Toshiba. One of Toshiba's best selling points is the company's unwavering focus on accurate gray-scale levels. The company adheres to the philosophy that faithful colors begin with a video decoder's ability to produce true black and the SD-2200's image quality shows this philosophy. Dark scenes were well defined instead of murky, while bright scenes showed off the player's ability to offer good edge definition, resulting in a more three-dimensional image. We were also pleased to see that the SD-2200 showed no digital artifacts during problematic action sequences with high data compression. Plus, we loved the onscreen meter, which allows you to monitor the bit-rate allocation for a given scene.
Few manufacturers compare to Toshiba when it comes to offering superb digital-to-analog audio converters. With the SD-2200, explosions punched through the air with high velocity, while ambient sound effects trickled across the room with an eerie realism. Of course, there are many factors that contribute to a home theater system's ability to immerse the audience in a bug-infested jungle setting or to plop them down in the crowded streets of New York City. However, we have found that DVD players with inferior audio components invariably fail in this regard. Unlike lesser models, Toshiba's SD-2200 brought out the best in our test system.
The SD-2200 scored high on music reproduction as well. On well-recorded, standard CDs, the SD-2200 reinforced the notion that a good DVD player is more than capable of doubling up for music listening. Dynamic range--the ability to reproduce the highest highs and the lowest lows--was clear and relatively distortion free. On High Definition Compatible Discs, the SD-2200 kicked into cruise control and delivered satisfying renditions of everything from grunge guitar to slow sax.
If you're impartial about HDCDs and you already have a home theater system with Dolby Digital 5.1-channel processing, Toshiba's SD-2200 probably isn't a practical choice for a DVD player. After all, there are less expensive, single-disc players without built-in decoders, as well as higher-priced machines with more features and better build quality. If you want a DVD player that's well equipped for today's audio-video formats and does all the important things right, however, the SD-2200 is a good choice. --Eric Gill

First of all, you have sound options. If you have a Dolby Digital/DTS receiver, you can use the optical output OR coax digital output to connect to your receiver. If you don't have such a receiver, the SD-2200 has a built-in decoder so you can connect 6-channel analog outputs to your receiver.
The SD-2200 also has all of the popular video options. You can choose from composite video, s-video, or component video. I use the component video with my Toshiba 27V51 TV and the picture quality is great! I have also seen the SD-2200 hooked up with s-video for great quality as well.
In terms of features, the SD-2200 is loaded. First of all, it has 2 disc trays, so you can swap one disk out while playing the other one. I find this feature especially helpful so I can keep one audio CD in one drive and a DVD in the other. The SD-2200 also has 3 levels of zoom, great pause and frame advance controls, and a great, easy to use "joystick-style" remote.
The SD-2200 has worked very well for me for 9 months now. I'm confident it will keep me satisfied for years to come!

I have tried two of these players with the same results. I have sent a copy of one of my jpeg CDRs to SAMPO US tech support and they confirmed the problem but had no answer. They sent my CDR to Taiwan for evaluation a month ago but I"ve had no response so I'm sending my second unit back.
If you want jpeg compatibility I suggest you wait until the major brands have it or you take your own CDR's to test before you buy.

Sampo Engineering... Astounding Ingenuity !.......2002-12-07
So, I gave her the sony back this Christmas and got myself a the Sampo DVE-631CF. Partly because I wanted something that would play my hundreds of my custom burned music CD's.
I decided to get this model after reading many reviews on it online and a friends reccomendation.
It played all my VCD's, SVCD's, XVCD's, DVD-R's, and DVD-rw's
and my MP3's perfectly without a hitch! Couple that with a solod design - What more could you ask for!
Ohh yea.. Compact Flash reader! I wonder why anyone never thought of this before! No more plugging my Canon Digital Camera into my TV, No I can just take my digital pics and preview them through my DVD player. Very cool feature indeed!
To top it off the Sampo has an excellent FF/REW capabilities. I was able to due 20x FF without the picture jumping all over the place and skipping like my sony did at 4x FF.
The one negative that I can find about this unit, albeit a small negative, would be the remote. Its comfortable and small
but something about the button arangement just isnt doing it
for me. :( But aside that its 100% PERFECT!
All in all I'd have to say this Sampo DVD player is an excellent addition to system and it has found it self a permanant home along with the rest of my AV equipment.

Monster Cable MBL-C SCSS500 Mobile Ultra-Low Profile Car Phone Charger, Samsung
Manufacturer: Monster Cable ProductGroup: Wireless Binding: Wireless Phone Accessory Product Features:
ASIN: B000092WXY |
Product Description
You love the convenience of recharging your battery while driving. But you'd sure love to lose that big, ugly charger. It blocks your console and sticks out so far that it's easy to knock right out of the lighter. The #1 problem with traditional car phone chargers is breakage! Every time you pull the phone toward you to talk, you put a lot of pressure on the contacts. Plus most users pull on the charger's cord when removing the charger, further weakening the cord. Ordinary charges are simply not designed to handle all this abuse. Normal phone chargers abuse your phone battery, slamming it with voltage even after it's fully charged. As a result, excess heat is created in the battery. This heat overcharges your battery, dramatically shortening battery life and charge retention.Monster's Ultra Low Profile Car Phone Charger is designed to be virtually flush into the dashboard, out of your way. It's so small that you can leave it plugged into your lighter when not in use, for ultimate charging convenience. The charger also features a swivel cord, which goes 90 degrees up or down. This lessens stress on the contacts, preventing contact separation and subsequent breakage. The cord moves with you when you're talking on the phone, but lays flat against the console, out of your way, when you're not. Monster's Smart Digital Charger technology provides ultra fast recharges, and consistently delivers the exact amount of charge needed, for maximum battery performance. Once the battery's reached full capacity, the charger switches to a low current. This babies your battery and keeps it topped off, even during use. Life is frustrating enough already. With Monster's Ultra Low Profile Car Phone Charger, you can finally say goodbye to that bulky charger. And rest assured. Your phone battery will be happier, too. Happy Commuting.

Toshiba RD-X2 DVD-RAM/DVD-R Recorder
Manufacturer: Toshiba ProductGroup: CE Binding: Electronics Accessories:
Product Features:
ASIN: B00006RVH5 |
Product Description
INTERNAL 2400 BAUD MODEM FACTORY SEALEDAmazon.com Product Description
Looking for more than just a DVD player? Try the Toshiba RD-X2 combination DVD player/recorder and PVR. The RX-D2 lets you record favorite TV programming--or copy home movies and other videos--to its built-in 80 GB hard-disk drive (HDD). Next you can create virtual titles for recordings, including menus and chapters with thumbnail images. Then use the built in assemble editor to burn your programming to recordable DVDs in high-quality MPEG-2 digital images. A convenient library function maintains an inventory of all recorded content by disc or title (sort by date, time, or genre). The RD-X2 offers the flexibility of recording on both DVD-RAM--perfect for instant chapter access and for multiple rerecordings--as well as on DVD-R, widely regarded as the most widely compatible of the many DVD formats (great for sharing camcorder footage with loved ones). DVD-RAM offers double-sided recording (9.4 GB total storage), and the format is re-writeable, too. Dubbing from DVD-RAM to HDD and back is fully digital; it's both high-speed (2x to 8x dubbing from HDD to DVD-RAM) and lossless.
Advanced timer programming lets you use the unit like a VCR, telling it the time and channel you'd like a given program recorded, and built-in Gemstar VCR+ greatly simplifies this. When recording in SP mode, the hard drive holds about 36 hours of programming; you get up to 75 hours in LP mode. Time slip/chase TV recording/playback lets you begin watching a recording that is already in progress or "pause" a live recording and then return to it later.
Significantly, this model provides the option of recording audio in higher resolution than the MP3-like Dolby Digital 2.0. Choose from three separate formats, depending upon your desired quality and available disc space: Dolby Digital 1 (192 kbps), Dolby Digital 2 (384 kbps), and linear PCM (1,546 kbps). Four line-level analog-audio inputs and one RF audio/video input accommodate recording and dubbing content from multiple sources.
For playback, ColorStream component-video outputs provide great color detail and high purity when connected to compatible televisions (the unit also has standard RF and composite- and S-video outputs). Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.
Customer Reviews:
The Future is Finally Here !!.......2002-12-30
This model is about to be released across the country. I tested one at one of the major Home Theater shows and was quite impressed with it's all around performance.
This is what I would call the third generation for this device. The first two Panasonic models and now this Toshiba. Each incarnation improves over the last....with the the first models including no hard drives....and the second generation including a 40 GB hard drive....now Toshiba enters the field with a full size 80 GB hard drive...which gives you the flexibility to record your favorite programming or dub and edit vacation movies on the hard disc drive....without this feature....a recordable DVD player is only doing half it's job.
This drive, similar to what is used in a personal computer, can store recorded broadcast programming and dubbed content. The RD-X2 will allow high speed dubbing (2x, 4x, 8x) from the HDD to a DVD-RAM and back without any deterioration of the digital MPEG2 signal and provides instant access to recorded programs so there's no more searching for blank locations on the disc. Once the program is recorded you can create playlist titles with chapter thumbnails and names.
It also records on DVD-R discs....DVD-R are record only once discs that are playable in all the newer DVD units. And at prices near to the $99 range....get the Grandparents a new model DVD player...so that they can view all the DVD home movies you will now send them. DVD-R discs are falling in price....much like the road of the CD-R discs....might also be a way to decrease the overall in-law yearly visiting time....which may make this unit priceless!
The Disc Budget feature directs the player to read the space available on a DVD-RAM disc and automatically assign the optimum data rate for video recording based upon the length or programming and the audio mode selected. The RD-X2 offers several preset and manual recording modes:
* The consumer can choose the LP picture mode (2.2mbs video data rate) and record as much as 75 hours on the HDD and 4 hours 22 minutes on the DVD.
* The SP picture mode offers near-DVD picture quality, with a video bit rate of 4.6mbs. In this mode, the consumer can record approximately 36 hours on the HDD and 2 hours on the DVD.
* The manual recording mode lets you preset the bit rate.
There are 37 individual choices from 2.0mbs all the way up to the highest quality 9.2mbs.
Amazon customers need to keep on Papa Amazon to stock these babies in bulk and post them at a competive price level. The only thing more you would want on this model would be to add TiVo capabilities....but I guess you have to save something for the next generation.
Marked Improvement on My Previous DVD Recorder.......2002-11-12
GENERAL DISCLAIMER ABOUT WHAT DVD RECORDERS CAN AND CAN'T DO:
1. Copying prerecorded DVDs and VHS tapes onto DVD-Rs isn't going to happen. The units will detect the macrovision and other protections and refuse to copy these items.
2. DVD-RAMs recorded on *any* DVD Recorder won't play in regular DVD players. Period.
3. Home recorded DVD-Rs will not play in every single DVD player. They'll generally work in the newer machines, but you won't be able to tell in advance which ones will work, and which ones won't. Its a crap shoot.
WHAT I REALLY LIKE ABOUT THIS UNIT:
1. The hard drive. You can record programs on to the hard drive, edit out the commercials, and then burn them onto a DVD-R or DVD-RAM. I can edit down to the frame. And you get twice as large a hard drive on the Toshiba as you do on the equivalent Panasonic model, the HS2, for about the same price.
2. Manually adjustable recording levels. The unit has two preset recording levels (SP and LP) which correspond roughly to the length of recording you would get with a 6 hour VHS tape, but you can also manually adjust the recording level (picture and audio quality) on both the hard drive and the DVD-R so you can squeeze that last program on the DVD-R, or you can adjust things so you get the best possible picture quality for the 3 hour movie you want to burn onto DVD-R.
3. Compared to the "look" of the graphics on the DMR-E20, its like the difference between a first generation Atari and a Nintendo.
4. You can record a bunch of programs onto the harddrive, edit out the commercials, and then program the unit to download them on to the disc. The unit will automatically start the first program you selected, download it, end right when the recording ends, start the next program and so on. If you don't have enough space on the disc to record everything you tell it to, the unit will tell you in advance.
5. You can start watching a program from the beginning, even if its recording in the middle.
6. You can manually input titles for each recording. If you title recordings on the hard drive, when you download them to disc, the machine will automatically transfer those titles to the disc. You can also clear a title with one click of a button. Very convenient.
7. The unit is very responsive to the remote control. With the E20, if I was doing a lot of downloading, my fingers would get sore from having to keep punching in every letter, every space, and the "set" key. Not with this remote, it doesn't require a heavy hand to react, and the reaction times are much, much faster.
HOWEVER MUCH I LIKE IT, IT ISN'T A PERFECT UNIT, HOWEVER, SO BEAR IN MIND...
1. You can't record directly from the TV input source to DVD-R or DVD-RAM. It has to be recorded to the hard drive first.
2. The unit is more complicated to use than a VCR, definitely. If your VCR is still flashing 12:00, get a Tivo instead (Tivo gets 5 stars, its the best product I've ever bought. Period.) You can't just delete a program by hitting a button, there are a number of steps to be followed. There is a definite learning curve (however, IMO its worth it).
3. While the written instructions and illustrations are basically good, they are poorly organized. They are not organized in what I consider a logical manner, certainly not in the order I tried to determine things so I could actually use the unit. And I managed to figure out some shortcuts that were omitted from the manual, that were far less time consuming than the methods written. The lack of a table of contents is a serious omission as well, so you're forced to do some hunting for what you're looking for. Also, the Toshiba website hasn't been updated and doesn't even list the RD-X2 on it, so you're not going to find much there.
4. The one other thing I don't like about the unit is that you can't record a single program onto a DVD-R disc (you can on a DVD-RAM) and then three weeks later add something else on to the disc. When you write to a DVD-R, it fills it up and finalizes it, no other options. This means if you want to put specific things on the same disc, you'll have to save them on the HD for a while until you have everything. Fortunately, the HD is pretty large.
It is more complicated to use than a VCR, and you'll definitely need to read the installation and operation manuals, but if you do, I think you'll find its worth it.
