No problems for 3 months.......2007-09-22
I'm not very knowledgeable about technical things. All I knew was that I needed a DVD player, and Toshiba was a reputable brand name, and that the product price tag was reasonable.
For about 3 months I used this DVD player, just about everyday. I never noticed anything wrong with it, such as the audio & visual not playing together, which other reviews mention. Then one day it started to freeze up on me, skipping and what not. I gave it a rest for a couple days, but about a week later, it just wouldn't even load a DVD to it's main menu. I'm not sure if it was me that did something wrong to make it stop working, I would like to know if it did so I don't repeat the same mistakes.
I do know one thing: DVD PLAYERS DON'T STOP WORKING AFTER 3 MONTHS - BUT THIS ONE DOES!!!
OK player, audio/video sync problem.......2007-08-13
Not a bad player, not a great one, either. The image quality is not better than that of a 3-4 year old Toshiba DVD player it replaced, and I have seen better players (HK, for example). It is not bad either, I guess this is what you can expect at this price range. I notice some heavy motion artifacts on some DVDs but it might be my HD TV, or the combination of the two. I am using the component outputs.
I keep buying Toshiba because they have nice zoom feature - it zooms 20-30% - apparently, that ratio depends on the way the movie is recorded (anamorphic or not, etc.), in order to give you the best quality. It is very useful with movies with 2.39:1 aspect ratio. This is the only reason I bought Toshiba DVD player this time.
My player has the audio/video sync problem that almost everybody is reporting. I found a firmware upgrade on the Toshiba-Canada web site, and this resolved the problem. This upgrade is not posted on the Toshiba-US web site yet, a few weeks later. This shows how careless Toshiba is about its products; I had similar experience with other Toshiba products.

I bought an SD-4000, partly because of the reviews here on Amazon, so that I could play avi files on my TV. The files play perfectly on my computer, but simply would not play on the SD-4000. The small print in the manual says that avi files will play only from CD-Rs, so I split my files and burned them to CD---and they still wouldn't play.
Not sure what the problem is; some reviewers of this player have had no trouble at all with avi files. Maybe you'll be lucky!!---but just in case, be sure to buy from a store with a friendly, liberal return policy.

The most remarkable thing about this unit is its ability to play avi, wmv and mpeg files, which units that cost twice as much cannot do. The picture quality is an upgrade from the previous DVD player, especially considering that the picture is going into my six year old non-flat screen. It would be the perfect player if the screen saver would kick in after being on pause for awhile and if the unit could remember where it was at in a video, rather than starting over at the beginning, when the unit is powered down.
Sound Sync Ruins Otherwise Good DVD Player.......2007-06-09
The Toshiba SD-4000 Progressive Scan DVD Player is a great looking DVD player with a good picture, but awful sound. If you only want a DVD player for decoration than you may be in luck with sleek black styling. You may also like this dvd player if you read captions instead of listening to the movie. But if you plan on turning on the sound please choose another player immediately.
Sadly, I did not read reviews on sites like [...] before I bought this product. But just like numerous other users have realized, this player fails to sync up the sound with the picture. After watching about an hour of a movie, I begin to notice the sound not matching the picture. If you are going to watch anything longer than 1.5 hours that just watch the second half another day, because after an hour or so of use the player gets too tired to keep up.
Please stay away from this product as you may be equally dissatisfied. It will ruin every movie until you throw the dvd player in the trash or struggle with Toshiba to replace it.

While it would be nice if this charged the battery, I still find it useful. For my research I have to take many pics with the camera in a relatively fixed position, and this keeps me from having to spend a lot of time worrying about conserving batteries.

This adapter is great if you are using a 5MP camera or over because the file size to transfer to either the printer or computer is big and battery can dry easy.I found that if you don't use this adapter you can be stopped from complete your direct printing ( with out computer) and retouching your pictures because the battery goes dead before you finish. Great accesory.

I bought this thinking that it would charge the battery, but it does not. It is only for powering the camera to save battery life while downloading pictures to you pc or while printing. i guess that you can also take pictures while its plugged in. Why would you need something like this? It doesn't seem like a very useful product to me.

I saw this flat screen TV .... It works great in both modes. The only trouble is that no other generic remote will operate it as stated in another review.

I purchased this monitor to serve as a "preview monitor" for my home theatre equipment rack, which is in a separate room from my projector and screen and which also contains a PC. Because of the variety of input types this monitor supports (Composite Video, S-Video, Component Video, RGB Video, and Cable/Antenna) it allows me to preview and cue any of the source material - and operate the PC in the rack. The TV tuner is an unnecessary feature for me, but it is a nice bonus.
The auto-size auto-contrast-adjust features were pretty neat and worked surprisingly well. I don't need to use the RGB-out for dasiy chaining to an additional RGB output, but it's nice to know I could.
The color and brightness are good, but the LOW color temperature setting is usless as it turns everything on-screen bright red. I recommend either the MED or HIGH settings depending on your tastes.
The on-screen menu is well laid out, and gives you good access to the configurable options. I also like the hard buttons on the bottom of the screen for power, input toggle, channel, and volume.
The monitor isn't perfect, however. It comes with a clear protective film over the screen to protect it during shipping, which was to be expected. However, the adhesive on the clear film was so strong that as I pulled if off (and I pulled it off gently), it actually peeled off some of the paint around the screen frame and exposed silver metal specks in a few places. Not the end of the world, but annoying to have to stare at.
I was also bothered that the best resolution in RGB mode it could handle was only 1024x768. Any higher res from the video card returned an "OUT OF RANGE" message on the screen. The 17" version of this monitor can do 1280 res, so I was surprised that the 15" little brother couldn't. It did handle 32-bit color at 1024x768, however - which the manual says it won't.
The remote is OK, but there are some statements on the manufacturer's Web site relating to the remote control that are simply NOT TRUE. For example, the description says:
"In addition to standard TV controls, this remote control is equipped with Discrete Power On/OFF and Direct input keys suitable for universal remote macro programming."
That statement is false. The remote that came with my unit has ONE regular power toggle button that cycles on and off, and ONE input button that cycles through the 5 inputs (Video, S-Video, Component, RBG, and Tuner).
That wasn't such a huge problem for me, however, since I use a touch-screen learning remote to control all my theatre gear, and I was able to find the discrete IR power and input codes for a different Sampo HDTV monitor on the Web, program them into my learning remote, and they worked just fine. But unless you have a learning remote and are able to input direct IR codes using software (such as a Philips Pronto or Marantz RC series), you won't be able to take advantage of the fact that this monitor responds to discrete codes.
Another very minor glitch with the remote is that the caption for the LOUDNESS button has an extra "N" in it - it reads "LOUNDNESS."
I also didn't like the fact that the audio plug for the RGB input is a stereo mini-jack, while all the other audio inputs are standard RCA L&R jacks. Additionally, I would have liked to have the ability to use one set of audio inputs with any video input for easier connectivity when connecting directly to a surround processor or other other A/V switcher.
However - even with all the above issues, this monitor is a great bargain. With the price so low, I am able to overlook the hiccups and welcome this monitor into my equipment rack. If you're looking for a monitor that can handle all of the currently-standard video inputs, and can put up with some minor problems in return for the low price, then this monitor is right for you.

The Toshiba SD-3109 combines extraordinary audio options with state-of-the-art digital video playback to give you an experience equal to--or better than--the cinema.
The Toshiba SD-3109 was easy to set up--it automatically detected our type of audio output (two-channel) and video format (4:3). Its rear video and audio connections were clearly labeled. The manual is easy to follow; lots of graphics make it simple to figure out how to connect in any possible configuration. Also, the front-panel button layout is simple, leaving more complicated functions to the full-featured, glow-in-the-dark remote.
The Toshiba SD-3109's most unique feature is its dual-disc loader, which lets you put in two DVDs for a double feature (or two audio CDs for a longer listening experience). The Toshiba SD-3109 let us program tracks and chapters from both discs, although it wouldn't allow us to randomize playback across discs. We were pleased, however, to be able to load one disc while the other one was playing.
The Toshiba SD-3109 offers traditional DVD features such as camera-angle selection, subtitling, and language preference, but it also has a good selection of more-advanced features. The DVD player that could........2004-04-02
I've had my 3109 for about 4 years now. It was my first purchased DVD player, and i've never regretted it. I think back then I paid on Ebay for new - $230 (including shipping).
I put in a lot of time watching DVDs, at least 6-8 hours a week. The setup menu is detailed and useful, the image has always been great through s-video, the sound has never let me down. The double-tray has proven useful over time. The zoom has always been fun. The multi-angle was cool for the two movies that had it (6-string Samuarai was one). I've had some noticeable pausing from time to time with double-layer DVDs, and recently it balked at playing a particular disk that it's played before. he recent upgrade of my TV has prompted me to get a replacement DVD player with a DVI port. Aside from that one DVD, I'm still playing movies whilst waiting for the replacement momitsu 880 to arrive.
If you're considering getting this now, keep in mind:
1) no progressive-scan
2) no DVD-R, DVD+RW, etc. format disks
3) no MP3, though it does read CD-Rs with wav files
You're probably better off buying an 80 dollar new Toshiba or Panny but if it's a hand-me-down the image and sound quality are excellent. I'll be retiring this player to the bedroom.

Well I always wanted to try HDCD and this unit was a very inexpensive way for me to do so. I have a pretty high end system and this player really lets through the warmth and low end extension of my HDCD discs. King Crimson In the Wake of Poseidon sounds better than almost anything I've heard recorded today. Tools last album Lateralus is phenomenal!!! I just wish I could get AC/DC re=mastered with HDCD. Hey, is may be simple but is still deserves good quality. They are the best hard rock band in the world you know. I also noted that my regular discs sound . I guess that could be attributed to the superior A/D converter. Not sure and really don't care. This player is able to make my discs sound almost as smooth as my LPs. The remote is too big and isn't very easy to use but the player is worth the money.
more then 5 years of use.......2004-03-03
This was the dvd player of its time. To love this player means you can't compare it to anything of today's standards. I've purchased this player when the price was over 300 and dvd was just making a hit and now, after more then 5 years (lost count) i still love it. I must say that during those 5 years or so, it did everything that i wanted it to do. I watch a lot of movies and have monthly membership and so my movie viewing is over 500 movies i think. Anyway, it plays fine and the zoom feature is realy great. It resembles the EZ view that a lot of dvd players now have. The only thing that i remember about this player is that it didn't have a lot of formats that it can play. For movies all you are stuck with are dvds. NO VCD, no dvd-r nor dvd+r. All it does is play dvds and the cd sound is moderate. I've never used the HDcd option so i can't say for sure.
This year, I'm starting to notice that it is starting to show its wear but that is ok because it has exceeded my expectations already. I would say that it gives error messages 1 out of every 10 movies that I load up and it seems to get worst each month. The dual tray isn't used anymore because it has too many moving parts. Most new players gives you 1 or 5 trays but nothing in between. Even I knew from the start that the trays were problematic since it sometimes doen'st switch to other dvds but i never knew if that was the player or the dvd itself.
This year, it has been pushed back from the living room to just a sleeping room due to other players with better format and options. Still, it's a good player but i think you will find multiple formats of dvd-r and dvd+r better in the newer players for a few more bucks. It will be better for the far future.
Great Performance.......2002-07-13
I've owned my SD-3109 since 1999, and it has worked perfectly. I've NEVER had a problem. The quality is great; I'm glad I made the investment.
I like being able to put 2 discs in at a time. Also, it plays HDCD CD's for better sound and performance.

3 years and out.......2002-07-07
I feel fortunate after reading some of the other owners misfortunes with their 3109's. At least mine gave me 2 good years of service before it started having problems with freezing up every other time I used it.
Now that it just hit the 3 year mark I finally have a serious problem... It ate a dvd and the tray refused to open. I took it apart and pulled the dvd out but it still will not open the tray door. I can see the internal tray sliding with the cover off but I don't have a clue how to fix it.
I definetly won't take it in for service since I will probably pay more for repairing it than a newer & higher quality unit will cost.
It did have some great features, the zoom was a great feature especially with the letterbox movies. The slow play was also a great feature. If I had to do it all over again I would not have purchased the dual tray system. It was a headache with more moving parts that eventually broke down in 2-3 years forcing a costly repair or a purchase of a new player.
Planned obsolence used to be the bread and butter of the automotive industry but it now appears the electronics industry, at least Toshiba, is capitalizing on this concept.
I think I'll try another brand this next time around, perhaps one that will last longer than 3 years and comes with a backlit remote, but I still want one with the zoom and slow play features....
