As with many superior home theater receivers, the HTR-5960 is capable of component video up-conversion. This function takes S-video and composite signals and converts them into component signals to ensure a high-quality picture on your digital TV from any source. No more switching inputs according to which source you're using--rather, they can all go through the same component connection. The receiver also offers the ultra-convenient Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer (YPAO), which employs an optimizer microphone at the listening position to pick up test tones from your speakers. The HTR-5960 then analyzes the test tones to let you know which speaker configuration is best. It's like having a professional audio engineer tweak your system.

What really makes the HTR-5960 special, however, are the extras, such as a compressed music enhancer that improves the sound quality of MP3s and other compressed formats and a specially designed terminal that accommodates separately sold iPod docks, such as the Yamaha YDS-10. I BOUGHT THIS RECIEVER TO REPLACE A SONY ES DA1000.BEFORE I BOUGHT THE YAMAHA I LOOKED AT DENON ALSO BUT YAMAHA HAS SO MANY MORE WAYS TO ADJUST THE SOUND TO EXACTLY THE WAY YOU WANT IT PLUS THE YAMAHA ALSO HAS MORE HOOH UPS. THE REMOTE IS EASY TO PROGRAM AND WORKS WELL. I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER WITH THIS PURCHASE.THE ONLY NEGATIVE THING I CAN SAY IS THERE IS A FAIR AMOUNT OF READING THE MANUAL WHEN YOU SET IT UP THE FIRST TIME. AFTER 2 MONTHS I STILL DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE EVERYTHING.

Good sound and features for the price.......2007-02-17

I found the hook up of this device to my HDTV, Set-Top box, DVD, etc to be very intuitive. The automatic speaker, detection and level setting feature worked flawlessly. The sound is very natural with several choices of enhancements for Cinema, music and TV. The use of the remote control is a little less intuitive and I would like the ability to tune the FM section and set Presets using the remore rather then the Front Panel controls. I would recommend this unit for anyone seeking a moderately pticed AV unit, If strickly listening to music is your desire, this may not be the best choice.

Great bang for the buck.......2007-04-11

The electronics engineer that installed my home theater reccomended this particular unit because of the features and the value. I went high end on speakers, screen, and projector then thought I could get by for a while with an economical receiver and DVD until they decide on which DVD format will be the new standard. Talk about bang for the buck! Amazon saved me $214.38 compared to the best deal in town.
You will love all of the outputs on the Yamaha 5960, the setup was a snap, great remote and easy to use. On the negative side, Electronics Expo offered no tracking for the shipment, just a projected range of dates which ended up being the last day. That caused some acid indigestion. To the credit of EE they did deliver within the stated window, the packaging materials were all authentic and undisturbed. I have no idea how they were able to sell the receiver and deliver it to my door for that price but I am definitely smiling.

Yamaha Receiver a fine purchase.......2007-01-09

It's not as powerful as my previous amp, but the audio quality is excellent and the the microphone setup for speakers made everything a snap.

Great receiver but..............2006-12-09

Taking the HDTV plunge I needed an amp with component inputs to actually make the digital signal worthwhile while integrating all my components in one unit (HDMI amps are too expensive for me at this time). This is my third Yamaha amp and I love them. The auto setup works great and is a very nice feature,(it even checks speaker polarity and detected my 5.1 speaker setup) although I did a bit of subwoofer tweaking to suit my personal taste. The manual floats from one extreme to the other from simplicity in setup to technobabble in manual setup features. This is minor in my opinion due to the overall high sound quality but still an annoyance. I will tell you if you are going HD, the onscreen display will NOT work. You will have to use a composite (analog) connection first to set your sound up THEN connect the video digitally losing your OSD in the process. None of this info is in the manual and tech support dryly telling me that this amp does not support that feature, sorry, thank you for calling Yamaha. Even with those shortcomings I do believe this amp sounds phenomenal with the rest of my older Yamaha 5.1 home theater speakers.

Basically, if I don't hear anything out of the ordinary, then I'm happy. This receiver is like that. Amplification power is more than ample; clean, uncolored sound; wealth of adjustments and tweaks; better-than-average customizable sound field modes. I don't have any complaints at all with this receiver.

I shopped for months and compared dozens of brands and models. This TV has a terrific picture, and decent sound. The average sound quality is no issue, because I use my entertainment system for that anyway. I considered spending more on a Sony, but opted for this set due to the price. I am glad. This performs as well as I could possibly hope. I feel the price of about $1100 was more than fair. In the future, I will consider Samsung as a first choice for elctronics, rather than a consolation. If you want performance, rather than a showy name, seriously consider this set.

Nice Purchase.......2005-12-29

I was originally looking at projection televisions with 52" screens. I did not like the angle of viewing from these sets, not to mention I live on the second floor. So I considered a flat panel. I went with the Samsung for several reasons. First, the black frame is beautiful. Second, the picture is outstanding. Consider the 3000:1 ratio when purchasing a lcd tv. The colors are outstanding. The 26" is large enough to give you the widescreen flat tv effect. I have the unit in a bookcase that measures 29" wide, so it fits perfectly. I might add a wall mount in the future. Also, this set would make a very large pc monitor, although I will use it a my main tv. I purchased the extended warranty for this high end product.

Incredible!!.......2005-12-28

I purchased this as a gift for my wife to be used as a PC monitor. My selection was based on quality only as price was not a deciding factor. I went to many retail stores and saw the TV in the TV isle, hooked up to an HDTV signal. I was hesitant to purchase because I was not planning on using this as a TV/HDTV monitor. However, after seeing how crisp and clear the picture was compared to all the other LCD TV's, I took a chance and purchased it and placed it under our tree for Christmas morning.

Setup was a breeze but took some effort that was not due to any flaw in the TV itself. The connection using the PC input for standard VGA (15 pin) cable was simple. The first test showed the display as normal aspect and not widescreen. I changed the TV to widescreen but the picture was "stretched" and did not look good. I played with the desktop settings (resolution) and could not find any that worked to my satisfaction. I then consulted the owners manual and it suggested using 1366 x 768 screen size. I did not have that resolution so I went to the video card website and downloaded the latest video driver for my wifes card. Once it was installed and the computer reset, I was staring at the most perfect picture I have ever seen for a computer monitor. The colors were bright, bold and vivid, there was no distortion or dot crawl. My wife and I surfed a few of our favorite sites and booted up a few of our favorite games. Each and everytime, we would look at each other and exclaim "THIS IS KEWL"! A fantastic picture quality!!!

I am so happy with this purchase and the quality of the TV/monitor that I plan to replace my 21 Sony Trinitron CRT monitor with the Samsung LCD.
