Product Description

In a live performance, music takes many different paths to reach your ears and touch your emotions, including a blend of direct and reflected sound. Bose® 301® speakers feature Direct/Reflecting® speaker technology to recreate this combination of direct and reflecting sound, delivering music that sounds spacious and more like a live performance. Conventional speaker design focuses sound directly at the listener, somewhat like a flashlight beam. That means stereo effects are most prominent in one sweet spot, delivering unbalanced sound to the rest of the room. 301 speakers produce Stereo Everywhere® speaker performance, so you and your friends and family can sit where you like and enjoy balanced stereo sound from almost anywhere in the room. Our 301 bookshelf speakers provide outstanding sound while fitting beautifully into your living space. Their slender and graceful lines will match your décor and our accessories offer even more placement alternatives. And 301 speakers are a suitable choice when youre ready to experience Bose sound in your movies as well as your music. Connect these versatile speakers to your surround sound receiver and enjoy the benefits of Bose sound in almost everything you watch.

Amazon.com Product Description

The 301-V series speakers employ the renowned Bose magic, in the form of Direct/Reflecting speaker technology. These versatile bookshelf speakers bring a lifelike spaciousness to movies and music. The combination of direct and reflective sound mimic a live performance, whether it's cinema or concert.

The speakers stand alone, mightily, but they also work well with a center channel speaker (the Bose VCS-10) to recreate a true cinema experience. Stereo targeting tweeters, a rear-firing tweeter, spatial dispersion lens and an 8" woofer fill a room with sound without filling it with cabinetry.

Automatic protection circuitry prevents drivers from being overdriven and provides increased reliability.

For its class, the 301 Direct/Reflecting system sounds much bigger than its price suggests.

5 out of 5 stars Best speakers you can get for the price. .......2007-07-14

I love these speakers. I've had Sony, JBL, Kenwood, RCA.. ect, ect, and these are, granted you are like me and have a "mild" audio setup, unblowable. Before I upgrated to my Onkyo receiver and power amp, I ran these through a Carver power amp and a Carver receiver. Many, many times these 301's have seen full volume and, after 10 years, they still sound great. No fuzz or scratching or distortion, even at 100 watts. I would recommend these, or any other Bose products to anyone, anytime. If you want a good quality, great sounding speaker, look no further than Bose.

Great sound for such a small speaker. I am pleased with the styling. Delivery was very good.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet Looking, Sounding, and Priced.......2007-03-09

I'm not a big fan of Bose products, believing them to be overhyped, overpriced, and disappointing for the most part. However, occassionally, Bose makes a decent product for the money. Their headphones, for example, make music sound good, even if they don't very accurately replicate sound. At a Best Buy, I recently stumbled upon these speakers. Out of the half dozen other speakers I could compare them to, these sounded the best. They provided the best combination of volume and audio quality of the batch. From my experience with Bose products, they tend to boost the bass frequencies at the expense of the treble, making them suitable only for certain types of music like Rock and Hip Hop, These speakers, however, provided a relatively flat response and the bass was not boosted at the expense of the treble. Mixed with a decent amplifier, I have no doubt they would perform adequately. These are by no means the best speakers money can buy, but Bose doesn't claim them to be. For the price, they not only sound good but look fantastic. These are some of the best looking bookshelves on the market, but this is only a subjective opinion. Thus, while I am not a big fan fan of Bose products, sometimes Bose is capable of making good products like these. Usually, their products are overpriced, but in this case, the price seems fair.

5 out of 5 stars Bose 301-V Stereo Loudspeackers.......2006-08-04

Response to order was timely and efficient. Packaging was appropriate, and items arrived in excellent condition. Simple installation instructions resulted in rapid setup and activation. Speaker Quality is very adequate for my typical interests, which include; country, jazz, popular, classical, opera, and musical show tunes. The sound reproduction is most adequate. A more expensive speaker system would make little, if any, improvement to the listening pleasure. Thank you, Bose, for the quality product, and Thank YOU Amazon for the delightful price break and service on the acquisition!

5 out of 5 stars jeff "electronics junkie".......2006-06-24

What can I say about a classic that only gets better with time. Bose keeps refining it with small tweaks here and there because the basic design is great. I went with the 301's over the 201's because I wanted the 8" woofer over the 6" one and the additional tweeter. I also have the VCS 10 center speaker and the 161's as surround speakers. Well I did not beleive that these speakers are all voiced matched line that is in the advertising baloney, but believe me the sound is seamless and of course Bose flawless. Save you money and get the 301"s they are definitely worth every penny.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice bookshelf speakers.......2005-10-26

I was just reading the reviews people are giving on 201 speakers but after listing to many good speakers in the same price range I found that either others are giving too much bass or too much treble. This speaker is giving a balanced out put of both bass and treble. Off course there are much better speakers than this but the price is also high. I do not recommend to use this as a part of home theater surround speakers (compared to Bose cube speakers) but can be used an additional front speakers to get better sound while playing songs. So in all, these are very good speakers for stereo sound. If possible look for open-items in the shop, they will be cheaper but performance will be same or buy online to save tax. If you get it for $150 or less then they worth money.

2 out of 5 stars The most trusted name in sound?.......2005-10-07

About a year ago I inherited a pair of 15-something year old Bose 301's from a relative, and initially I was pretty excited; I knew Bose was a very reputable company, and as far as my mass-media educated self was concerned, they were 'the best'. I got a year or two of good use from them when I decided to upgrade and get a new pair of speakers. Having had good experience with Bose via my series 2 301's I went and ordered these new series 5 201's - I didn't want to shell out the extra 100 bucks for the larger model. I recieved them rather promptly and quickly hooked them up for a test drive. I was rather impressed - they sounded better than my old 301's (which were worth $370 back in their day).

After about a week, I began reading reviews online and generally educating myself as far as $150+ speakers were concerned. I didn't like what I saw; people rated Bose very lowly and I couldn't understand it, they sounded alright to me. So, rather than just shrugging it all off simply as more anti-Bose sentiment, I decided to look into it more. After about another week's worth of shopping around, I ordered a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 8.2 bookshelf speakers for just under 200 bucks. Wharfedale is a highly respected and scarcely advertised English loudspeaker manufacturer that I had never heard of before. When those came I was eager to put them to the test, and see what everyone was talking about.

One word - wow!

Suddenly I got what everyone was talking about! These speakers i paid less for were better, a lot better. They put out 10 times the bass, crisp clean and clear through the whole range. The highs were high and the lows were low, the way it should be. I could tell the difference between a violin and a viola and I noticed for the first time that some dude was playing the maraccas in a song I must have heard a million times over again on my old Bose's.

The bottom line: If you've compared speakers and are happy with Bose's very warm, albiet very restricted sound, then by all means knock yourself out!

But, If you prefer a flexible, dynamic, accurate speaker that isn't afraid to be played really loud, look elsewhere. Check out manufacturers such as Klipsch, Cambridge Soundworks, Wharfedale, JBL, and Polk to name a few. All have similar speaker lines compared to Bose both in size and price range, and they sound a heck of a lot better.

I can't tell you that Bose sucks - because they don't. But I can urge you to listen before you buy, take everything you read with a grain of salt, and highly recommend the Wharfedale Diamond 8.2's.

1 out of 5 stars BOSE - Buy Other Stereo Equipement.......2004-01-31

Bose has made a name for itself through agressive advertising at the expense of quality audio technology. Simply put, there are dozens of audio loudspeakers on the market that outperform Bose at a fraction of the price. This has been a well known fact in the audio industry and among audio buffs for at least twenty five years.

Unfortunately the mass of consumers isn't aware of the quality problems with Bose as compared to other speakers on the market. A few years ago Consumer Reports gave an honest appraisal of Bose speakers- ranking them very low. Bose sued and lost. Now all reputable audio magazines such as Stereophile or Absolute Sound stay far away from Bose products.

If you are really interested in sound performance and you'd like to stay on amazon.com try JBL, Polk, Wharfedale or Cambridge Audio. While not cutting edge audio, they'll deliver a MUCH BETTER sound performance than Bose could ever aspire to.

2 out of 5 stars Cannot listen for a long time without fatiguing your ear..........2003-11-05

Bose is over rated in the mind of consumers due to their aggresive marketing stretegy. Ask any audiophiles what they think of Bose. There are other companies that make better spaekers like:

Wharfedale diamond series with kevlar cones
Paradigm
Psb
Tannoy mx-series
Polk Rt-series
MB Quart
Niles audio

Go with one of those, and you will be pleasantly surprised...
Happy listening to you all...

5 out of 5 stars Best speakers I've owned.......2006-12-09

Goes great with LCD tv's.... Makes a great addition to a 5.1 system. Awesome sound, just what you expect from Bose.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST bookshelf speakers ever made. PERIOD........2005-04-17

The Bose 301 Series V Direct/Reflecting bookshelf speakers are quite simply the BEST bookshelf speakers available for less than $400.00. Before buying them, I checked out and listened to several models from other (more expensive) brands and found them to be exceptional. The bass sounds deep but natural , the midrange is very clear and smooth-sounding while the treble (highs) does not sound shrill or fatiguing. Most of the 20-bit and 24-bit digitally remastered CDs in my music library sound exceptionally realistic and lifelike through these speakers. Believe me, this is the best speaker system currently available at its price.

4 out of 5 stars A speaker for background music.......2005-03-14

Let's be realistic, any Bose ever made speaker was never a true audiophile speaker. But what makes this a great speaker. If you have read other reviews you have already noted the 301's shortcommings. If you are looking for a wide and accurate soundstage look elsewhere. But lets say you are a party person or own a bar. Imaging and tonal response is less important here. You want a speaker that projects a wide soundstage and not be overpowering tonally as to inhibit good conversation but not to have a sound that is ignored. The Bose 301 is a good fit for this need. Though you might notice bass is a social environment higher frequencies will be drowned out by crowd noise. Here is where the 301 shines because they have sweetened up the mid range so you can here the music. The 301's produce a sound that is simular to live performances. In short if you want accuracy 301's are not for you but if you want a good sound in social situations buy the 301's.

1 out of 5 stars They sound good in the showroom.......2004-12-14

I was impressed with these speakers when I heard them in the showroom, but even after a lengthy break-in period I found them fatiguing. Other than that, the bass is weak and the build quality is unimpressive.

2 out of 5 stars Pleasant but over priced.......2004-09-22

Summary: A pleasant sounding speaker for back ground listening but over priced and out classed by the competition. Tonality is distorted to produce pleasant sound rather than accurate sound. Bass is loose and wumpy sounding. The 301's can shake the room but only over a limited range of bass frequencies. Direct-reflecting design hurts imaging. The combination of bad imaging, unrealistic tonality and loose bass make them a poor choice for home theater. Fit and finish are only OK for the price.

Background: My roommate has a pair of 301s set up in our living room. I have a more expensive "audiophile" type system set up in the side room. Often I think it's hard to get good product reviews off the internet. You either have the people who *hate* the company (pick one) and are out to trash the name or you have people who bought the product and are defending their choice. You rarely have someone who has spent considerable time with the product (not just 15 minute store demo) yet doesn't care if the product reviews well or poorly. As I had nothing to do with the purchase of these speakers I don't care if they are good or bad. I have put effort into proper setup since I do listen to them frequently.

Basically, they are not *bad* but you can do better for the same money. I don't expect these to match the various, more expensive speakers in my side room system while my roommate had these in the living room (Meadowlark Kestrel, Vandersteen Model 3, Magnepan MMG, NHT 2.5i, Pioneer HPM 100). However, I have heard similar priced models that I like better (PSB, Paradigm, NHT, Boston Acoustics, B&W). Many high end manufactures extend their lines and expertise into the Bose price range.

The sound:
Imaging: These really do not image well. As Bose says, these are sound everywhere speakers. That means you have a dispersed sound rather than tight imaging. An orchestra sounds wide and tall... so does a single guitar or the drop of a penny in a movie. This allows the speakers to sounds very big but, unlike some of the alternatives, you will never be able to tell the piccolo player is sitting just to the left of the first flute. This is not really a disadvantage if you aren't the type who sits in the sweet spot to listen for a while. But it can be a problem if you want to use these for home theater without a center channel. On the other hand, this is a reasonable trait if you turn on the music while walking around the house they will be fine.

Tonality: They don't have a very clean tone. Bose has tuned this speaker to make everything sound pleasant if not really true to the recording. Again, if you just want something nice to listen to in the background they will serve this function well. These speakers are excessively warm. They boost the mid bass and roll off the highs. Music will never become fatiguing but you traded realism for that tonality.

Bass: Several compromises were made here. Admittedly, the Bose can make the room shake with a moderately powerful receiver. This was great for college parties and OK for movies but it has limits. First, they have very limited bass range. These speakers do not go deep and they can not present all bass evenly. They favor certain notes over others (one-note bass). They excel at turning Watts into mid-bass but they just can't go really deep. I would guess they are done just under 50 htz. This is not shameful given the size of the speaker and /or price but people are often surprised when they learn how much bass is still left untouched whey they hear better speakers. Additionally, the 301's lack controlled bass. A tight thunderclap sounds like a suggestion of thunder. One of the true marks of a good bass speaker is the ability to *stop* producing bass in a heartbeat. That's what makes thunder clap and a kick drum kick (tight Bang! versus a loose wump like that car stereo next you at the light). The 301's wind up their bass then wind it down when they are done. The price competitive speakers from the companies above are far more nimble with the ability to start and stop quickly. Think of bullet train vs sports car. The bullet train Bose may be fast but it takes a long time get going (generate the desired frequency and amplitude) and a long time to stop. The entry level products from the like of NHT, PSB, Paradigms are like sports cars. Their top speed may not be as fast as the train but they can accelerate, turn and brake quickly (dynamics and transients). Which is better? Well if you just want to shake the room at one frequency go for the Bose. If you want to have tight, crisp bass, get something else.

Home Theater: Due to the warm forgiving sound of these speakers I found them OK for music. Two channel home theater is a different story. Without the center channel it's important to have good imaging. That imaging keeps the sounds on the screen rather than all over the room. The 301's poor imagining comes back to haunt. A single voice or clink of keys becomes the size of a full orchestra smeared across the room rather than staying in the TV where they belong. In addition to the poor imaging, the poor bass is also an issue. The loose wumpy bass does little justice to explosions and mechanical sounds. The "pleasant" tonality strips believability from every day sounds.

Overall I can see people saying they like the speakers because they sounds pleasant. They really work well as relatively low cost background speakers. The problem is they can't deliver anything more when asked. I accept that if they were $150 a pair but given the good choices for the $300+ asking price... well Bose is lucky most consumers don't bother to cross shop or that fewer stores sell the other bands I mentioned.

If you are seriously considering these speakers check out Audioreview dot com. They have good reviews of similar priced products. It's OK to buy them, just cross shop first.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars best camera made!.......2007-01-22

This may have only 1.2 mp but it is the best camera ever made in the digital arena! Really. (as evidenced by the unusually hi cost in the used camera market for these 1.2-1.3mp cameras) I own 4 of them and use them for my business. People are always commenting on what great quality photos I produce. The adjustment allows you to take photos in low pixels so the saved photos won't eat up all the space on your computer or camera card.
**A note of caution, the smart cards with 4-8 mpixels that fit this camera are very difficult to find now days and expensive to boot.
I think it won't take over a 16mp card.

5 out of 5 stars Tried many...this one is still the best!.......2003-12-20

I bought my Olympus D-340R in late 1998 (I think) when it first came out, for around $300. The same money buys a lot more these days but this one has honestly been worth every penny.

It has been used (and seriously abused) pretty much daily for 5 years and is still going strong. I have NEVER had a single problem with it.

I've purchased 4 other digital cameras since this one, only to return them (a Canon, HP 320, HP 635, and Olympus D-390). Nothing beats the quality of the pics on my Olympus D-340R. I've never experienced photos with red-eyes like I did constantly with the others (I don't use the red-eye reduction - typically just point and shoot), and the color/sharpness are far superior to the others.

The drawbacks are that there is no optical zoom, and I do go through a lot of batteries (but we use the LCD alot). The megapixels could be higher, but it works ok for me. Although I use it primarily for web use, I've found the SHQ shots print out superbly (with my photo printer).

I recommend upgrading to a 128 MB memory card - I did this past year, and wowsa! I can take nearly 600 HQ pics or nearly 300 SHQ pics. I also recommend getting a memory card reader for super-fast downloading, because the serial cable is painfully slow. With a card reader you can also bypass the Camedia software, which leaves something to be desired.

I am amazed that this camera has served me so well for so long! And until I can afford a $500+ model....I'll happily keep on using it!

4 out of 5 stars Muy buena cámara digital!.......2003-04-14

4 out of 5 stars good for beginners.......2003-04-09

...P>Ok, bad points first:

No optical zoom, just digital zoom. Digital zoom is pointless though, just makes the pixels bigger. I really wish all digital camera manufacturers would stop with the digital zoom boasts. what's the point?

Batteries. Yup, eats batteries fairly quickly. 4 of them.

Serial port download is slow.

Bulky. Heavy and quite a size compared to some of the dinky dig-cams about now.

Good:

Contrary to noevilpeople, I've found this camera to be extremely durable. It has lasted 4 years with me. Including a drop onto a marble floor, numerous plane trips, a house fire and a touch of condensation. good going. Name a PC or printer that still goes as well after 4 years!

Seems to take quite a few pictures for its memory. 36 HQ on a 8MB card is good going. newer cameras seem to squeeze in less, even at the same res, and with no discernible increase in quality. It can take 16MB cards easily enough (I got one), but any bigger (32MB) and I recall you have to send it back to Olympus to get it retro-fitted or something!

Price. it's cheap now!

Small display on top of the camera gives you enough info without having to use the power-hungry lcd a lot. LCD only needs to be used for macro shots ( <10 cm away) and panorama shots. Otherwise, just use the normal viewfinder.

All in all, this camera has done me well. the only real lack is the optical zoom, which is why after 4 years I'm after a new camera, but for the beginner this is a superb camera.

4 out of 5 stars Great Vacation Camera!.......2003-01-29

The D-340R is a great camera for the time it was created and marketed. Granted, it uses a serial port, but that was the standard a few years ago. I bought a multi-card reader, no problem with downloads now!

It does use batteries, but only if you are foolish enough to try to run the LCD display window a lot.

I bought a quick charger and a couple of sets of rechargeables at Radio Shack, and have had no problem.

The controls are useable, although I've never been able to make the "Delete All" function work, it involves pressing two buttons at once.

To noevilpeople: it DOES have a telephoto function, if you want a zoom, spend the money.

It's rugged enough - I dropped it from a picnic table to the ground once with no ill effect.

Again, this is an older camera, newer digitals offer more features. I bought mine in 1999, that was dog's years ago in the electronic world!

I've used an Olympus camera for film, now this D-340R, when I upgrade to a newer digital, I'll get another Olympus digital camera.
