Lens and Optics
The powerful 16x optical zoom lets you capture your subject with razor-sharp detail even from a distance, while the 320x digital zoom takes you even closer, revealing details too small to see with the naked eye. When capturing digital still images, the lens provides a 15x optical zoom--the equivalent of a 41-620 mm lens on a 35mm photo camera. The Optura 20 also features a 1.33-megapixel CCD and an image stabilization system that compensates for camcorder shake, even while panning and zooming.

Canon's DIGIC DV system makes it possible to achieve accurate color for both video and digital photos. Since video and photos have different color requirements, DIGIC DV utilizes two different color techniques to maximize video quality on a TV and still image quality for print or computer display.

Digital Stills
With its 1.33-megapixel resolution, you can capture digital stills up to 1280 by 960 pixels (for 4 x 6-inch prints). Additionally, the Optura 20's Simultaneous Photo Record featureenables you to record high-quality video to a MiniDV tape and e-mail-ready digital photos (640 x 480 pixels) to a memory card at the same time. You can also capture a rapid succession of photos just like the motor drive on a camera. With a single press of a button, the Opture 20 records 30 VGA (640 x 480) frames at a rate of 3 frames per second or 20 SXGA (1280 x 960) frames at 2 frames per second.

Images are stored on the included 8 MB Secure Digital memory card; the camcorder is also compatible with MultiMedia (MMC) cards.

More Features
The Optura 20 also offers a Super Night mode and Low Light Plus mode, allowing for continued recording even in virtual darkness. An assist lamp in the front of the camera illuminates the subject just enough to allow excellent image quality while retaining the desired mood or effect. The Optura 20 is also bundled with a higher capacity battery, the BP-512, for longer continuous shooting.

MiniDV Format

This is all delivered on a cassette that's 1/12th the size of a standard VHS tape. A MiniDV tape offers digital recording time of 2 full hours--20 times the capacity of a CD.

Optura 10/20 Junkcorder.......2007-06-19

These camcorders have an inherent manufacturing defect that apparently Canon hasn't fessed-up to. I use mine rarely. I bought a reconditioned Optura 20 several years ago. I quickly noticed that it operated only in low light mode unles it was "warm". I was using it backpacking and it would work ok when I left it in the sun or put it inside my coat, but once it got cool, the only thing I could photograph was a polar bear in a snowstorm. I've fixed and torn apart camcorders before, so I got me a busted Optura 10 on eBay with a bad tape drive for a song and a dance...less than 20 bucks. I figured I could swap the CCD board out if my Optura 20 got any worse. Wrong!! The optura 10 had the EXACT same problem. As for the Optura 20, the problem has gotten worse with time. now, it has to be really warm to function. Avoid this camcorder like the plague.

Open iris has exposure stuck, can't adjust exposure.......2007-03-04

Do not buy this camera!

I believe that this is a firmware problem of some sort, though I could be wrong. Whenever I am affected by this problem, I can no longer hit the Exposure button to adjust the exposure. My current work-around is to play a video (tape or card), and go back to the record mode. Very annoying, and it might not work later on.

I've experienced the same bad iris problem too after several years of normal functioning. Canon wanted me to send the camera in for repair--has anyone else actually had the problem fixed by Canon? If so how much did it cost and did it fix the problem? I'm wondering if I should get it repaired or just buy a new camera.

Bad Iris - a suggestion.......2007-02-05

I bought mine used, and after a month or so it started developing the now seemingly notorious iris problem that makes the image look as if you're somewhere in the vicinity of the South Pole. The over-exposed image can only mean that the iris is stuck in a wide open position, as other reviewers have said. It happens about 25& of the time when I turn it on, and the only way to fix it is to take the battery out for a few minutes, then put it back in (what Canon refers to as "resetting the camera"). I suggest everyone else who doesn't feel like paying a ridiculous amount of money for repair to try the same approach.

Iris issue aside, this is a good camera for the price. Low light performance isn't great, but I do a lot of closeup work with a 75W key light, and the footage looks pretty nice (no noticeable grain).

Bad Iris.......2007-01-14

Thanks for this site, I know realize my optura 20 is doing the same thing. It seems like it's stuck in low light mode. It goes into the is about 80% of the time when I power it on to the record mode. Sometimes I get lucky, but you can't shut it off, because if you do you may not be able to get it into the right mode again. You can't really use it because everything is slow and too white. I've had the camera for 3 years and it's been used very little. Not good build quality, now I can't wait to hear what the cost of repair will be. Is there enough people out there for a class action?

I purchased the twin pack as well. I ve not had any problems with the print quality, nor the ink distributing equally or normally. I do a great deal of printing and this product had performed better than what I had originally thought given the negative feedback presented. I am ordering a couple more packages. Not saying that ALL the cartridges are great, but the ones I purchased were definately as desired.

TERRIBLE!!!!.......2004-09-14

Don't waste your money on this junk. The first one arrived and it was already leaking in the box. After contacting their Customer Service, I was told to return it to the retailer for replacement (at my expense of course) and if the retailer wouldn't take it back then Rhinotek would. Got the replacement and used it for a couple of months (light use as the kids were out of school for the summer) and then it stopped printing as though it was empty. Took the cartridge out and found it had leaked all over the inside of the printer. Well, I figure the printer is garbage now as the ink is all over the electric contacts for the cartridge. Still thinking about contacting them about this but I certainly don't want another Rhinotek cartridge, so why bother??

Great Price Horrible Ink Quality.......2004-04-28

If you've ever used Lexmarks brand before you'll agree with me when I say its anything but great, but this product is no different. I saw the Rhinotek brand double pack for $31 and a single Lexmark cartirdge for $25. I went for the double pack and was severly disapointed. At first the in has more trouble comming out than the Lexmark then after it does it has a wider spay so when I printed photos it make the black eliments hazzy. It also ruined some of my video label by covering the colored lettering with black. So take my advise don't buy this prodct.

I bought this for heavy printing use on my Lexmark inkjet printer. But printing text is about all this particular brand can handle. Tables and spreadsheets don't come out in straight lines, even after aligning the cartridges. Even simple black text sometimes look pixilated, especially with some shadowed fonts. This brand may be half the price of Lexmark, but less than half the quality.
