While I used this, it worked reliably and was fun to have. Not even sure Casio still makes it (would guess NOT). Have moved up to PDA's by now, but if you don't need anything fancy like a pda, this unit worked just fine for the years I used it.

Unique PDA!.......2005-03-02

If you are a consumer who elects to pay out over a $1,000 for a simple desktop PC and $500 for a PDA, the BE 300 may not be for you. Designed in year 2000, the BE 300 was released in 2001. Casio made it to compete against the expensive fad PDAs. It was worth the original $299 suggested retail price. Casio stopped making them early 2004 and Casio pulled out of the North American PDA market completely.

The BE 300 is unique and there are a few hundred BE enthusiasts worldwide who know it, which is why there is a brisk trade in used units. Today (2005), a BE in its original condition will not please many people. To reduce cost and to provide stable programs, Casio installed a stripped version of Window CE 3.0 and its own programs. It does not come with many programs but it does come with the basics, Music Player, Photo Viewer, Notes, etc. It has a line menu, not an icon screen.

Here is the great part. Unlike the majority of other PDAs, the BE is modifiable. BE enthusiasts do not use the Casio screen. There are three operating systems you can choose from and install . Favorites vary from user to user. My favorite is exPod, which is free. eXpod makes it possible to install and use non-casio software. The BE is small, thin and light. It easily slips into a shirt pocket. It has excellent stereo sound and makes a fine mp3 player. It has a Flash Card slot, type I and II, well located at the top. I own three of them and I have set up disadvantaged students and seniors with used BEs, which can be purchased from $20 to $100. I just bought one that had never been removed from the box for $60

I can not begin to tell you how modifiable the BE300 is and it is well designed and manufactured. It is forgiving. It is incredible the abuse enthusiasts put units through experimenting and modifying and they keep on working. I cannot list all of the reasons here that you should consider a BE 300. Unlike other PDAs, the BE 300 has a large group of friendly enthusiasts who know a lot about the unit, what can be done with it and where to get free and inexpensive quality software. Final note: No PDA is a practical replacement for a desktop PC for one reason. The industry has repeatedly failed to come up with a practical input device. The screen keyboards are nearly useless, thumbboards are not much better and foldable keyboards add still another item to pack, carry, set up, etc. PDAs are excellent, true mobile devices for addresses, contacts, dictionaries, encyclopedias, music, for information retreival but input is another matter. If you want a true mobile PC look into the HP Jornada 600 through 728, these are actually mini-laptops built around PDA technology. They weigh under 2 lbs and a battery charge is eight or more hours, depending on the model. NEC still makes handhelds.They have the largest keyboards for handheld PCs (90% of full sized) They are pricy, about $1,000 for the mobilepro 900 but that is the price for a low end notebook, which--lets face it--is not a mobile device. Notebooks are no more than expensive portable desktop computers that people lug around and set up from desktop to desktop and once you set them up, you are chained to the desk. I chuckle when I see students and professors lugging them around libraries. Jornadas and NEC Mobilepros come with install phone modems and Jornada 700s come with built in wireless, so do NEC Mobilepros 700 - 900.
They can't keep their eyes off of me when they see me pull my HP Jornada 680 from a coat pocket, open it and immediately type away. I snap it shut, slip it in my pocket as I get up and take off into the stacks, tracking down another journal or reference book. The 680 was designed in 1998 and released in 1999. HP no longer makes handheld PCs but you can get one in great condition on eBay for under $200 and they cost over $900 new!! You do not know about these PDA-mini laptop hybrids because they were business, not consumer devices. Oh, the BE300 and Jornada 600s - 728 have excellent color touch screens.

This PDA is great for beginners and to learn how to use a PDA. If you use it, then upgrade to something more technical.

Slow Recall.......2004-06-04

I have owned this unit. It's processor was very slow when searching a contact. It took up to 20 seconds. I have always had Casio PDA's, but had to trade this one in for a Toshiba.

BE-300 is Very Good-BUT.......2004-03-26

This is an excellent PDA.
BUT it stopped working in 3 months but i would still highly recommmend it because i caused the problem and it is very sturdy and the screen quality is great and the mp3 player is nice too!
Plus CompactFlash is a must have!

A pretty good player for the money........2006-03-04

I got this about a month ago to use while at the gym while excising. I wanted both the MP3 capability and FM reception since the TV's at the gym broadcast on the FM band.

The sound quality is pretty good and the FM seems to work fine. The device is easy to load. It looks exactly like a UBS drive to your computer and you just move your music files onto the drive. As a bonus it will actually serve as a drive if you need to move files too. It seems to play any of my MP3 files without a problem and any WMA files made by Windows Media Player. Getting music off a CD onto the player is a no-brainer. You put your CD in your computer and WMP practically begs you to rip the music off of it and store it on your computer. Then it is just a case of copying the directory with music onto the player while it is hooked into your UBS port. I don't know if it will play protected WMA files, however.

On the negative side: The manual is awful, but anybody with some gadget sense can probably figure out the basic functions. The mode button feels cheaply made and I'm afraid I might break after a while if not handled carefully. This could be an issue for a smaller child. The device is supposed to hang around your neck using a strap that also serves as the cord for the ear buds. I don't like ear buds, so I knew even before I ordered it that I would be buying a more comfortable set of earphone for it ($10 from Panasonic). They work fine with the unit. I put my own strap on the thing and that's okay, but it would be better if you could find a holder that would strap it to your arm, especially if you plan to do aerobics where you are really bouncing around.

I bought the 256MB version, which was only $33. This is okay for music (approximately 64 songs), but for $20 more you get double your space with the next model up. I've been listening to audio books on CD from the library (just rip them to your computer disc, then onto the macvision) and they tend to take up a lot of space.

Not a perfect player, but for $33 - and no shipping cost. I'm pretty happy.

This was purchased for my 10-year-old son. It is easy to download files, easy to use and can take a lot of abuse (it gets dropped, banged around and left in places like only a 10-year-old boy can test a product). He says it's GREAT!!! Just exactly what he wanted.

This drive will not last.......2006-02-19

I bought one of these and used it as extra storage for about 6 months before it died. Maxtor shipped me a replacement that has lasted about 3 months. Now it too has died. Don't trust your data to Maxtor. Their products are awful.

External Drives and Maxtor.......2006-02-10

This drive has been running nearly non stop since the day I bought it fall 2004. Only once has it ever acted up because of heat failing to dissipate quickly enough. This is a big problem with many external drives, and is not really an issue particularly associated with Maxtor or Onetouch drives. In general, as I experienced PC builder I would highly recommended installing another internal drive and check to make sure you case is well ventilated. If this is not possible an external drive is best connected through either a firewire port or a USB2.0 slot. Anything else would be quite slow. As far as reliability statistics for various hard drives I would recommend also researching your product at http://www.storagereview.com/

Just what i needed.......2005-01-07

I bought this HD a while ago and haven't got the chance to try it out till now.
I have so many stuffs in my PC that everytime I reinstall it, I lose some documents, photos, videos even mp3s; now that I opened it I'm moving all my stuffs from one of my 80GB HD to it, now I can't erase them accidentally.
This is great, I recomend it to everyone who had trouble backing up or losing stuffs in their HD.
Stop buying tons of CD-Rs to back up and then just throw them away (I used to do that too), GO OUT THERE AND GET ONE NOW, ASAP!!!
Maxtor is one of my favorite brands in computer hardware so I recomend it eyes shut.

Great backup system.......2005-01-01

I have been using Maxtor external HD for about 2 years. This is the second one which I bought recently because I loved the one I have been using at work. The setup was quick and easy. Once you setup Retrospect and schedule it to run, you can just forget about it. The first time it run it usually takes a long time depending on your HD space. After that, it will be quicker. I suggest you schedule it to run late at night or early morning when you are a sleep. That way you will never be interrupted.

Maxtor one touch.......2004-12-14

Drive was very easy to install, no problem at all. I thought it was the 2Mb cache version but it was delivered as an 8 Mb.

I have not quite learned to use the Retrospect software, which was one of the reasons I bought the unit. The instructions for Retrospect are minimal, on line instructions are 200+ pages, probably won't print it. For now I will use Acronis which I have. Unfortunately, that software will not let me use the one touch feature, but with this software, backup can be scheduled.
