Pretty dam good for the price!.......2003-12-10

I've had this camera now for going on 2 years and I must say, it a great camera for the money. It's small and doesn't really take up too much storage. I must recommend that you get a real good case for it. You don't really want this camera exposed too much to elements..or children in my situation. I've had my three year old pull the camera off a kitchen table and drop it (no noticable change in performance.) I use this camera for work and for family events. It's just been great to have all that storage capacity. There have been a few times, however, that I've been less than happy with it's performance. For example, at my nephews graduation, the dark ambient light caused the camera to lose track of the subject. It gets confused in dark settings, even with the Best shot feature set properly. I also don't like how it takes sometimes up to 30 seconds to fully get powered up and ready to shoot. In most cases where it takes that long, you've missed a great shot. But seconds after it's ready, it takes really good pictures. I've never been dissapointed with the image quality. It captures very good details. So, I highly recommend this camera for the everyday user.

Excellent camera-Excellent Value.......2001-08-24

I am not a professional photographer, but I wanted top end image quality. This may not be the camera for the serious photography professional, but an excellent camera for the rest of us. The image quality may not be the ultimate best, but it is very, very good and the camera does not cost $5000+. A major reason for purchase was the bundled 340MB IBM Microdrive which is a must for shooting a lot of images at the fine setting. I recently went on a vacation/college visiting trip. I fired off over 200 images at fine setting and came home after two weeks on road with 80-90 images to spare on the drive-excellent, excellent feature for the price. This camera eats batteries, the included AA batteries are a joke, they were gone in 5 minutes. Advise buying two sets of NiMH and/or a set of Lithium Ion batteries and keep one set charged to alternate with-that gives you all the battery capacity you need (until fuel cells are available). Also a must is the AC adapter. Two minor complaints: 1)If you turn the camera on with the lens cap on, it shuts off automatically and the manual warns this can cause damage to the camera. Guess how many times this tends to happen?! 2) The camera should have a watch battery to keep the time and date current, it doesn't. If it goes without power it loses that info which has to re-entered at each shooting session if there are long time lapses between sessions. All in all I am very satisfied with the performance, features and storage capacity of the camera. Great value for your money!

The unexpected extra.......2001-08-20

Casio's new solgan - the unexpected extra. Boy do they have that right! I read a ton of reviews for 3.3 megapixel cameras trying to find what I wanted. I bought the casio because it uses AA batteries, supports microdrives, 3.3 megapixel, and has a Canon lens.

Then I got the thing and can't believe all the other features. The "BestShot" modes are FABULOUS, basicly macros that sets everything on the camera for the picture you are taking. "Candlelight portrait, water stopped in motion, sports, landscape, etc..." The Panaromic mode is the coolest, lets you "see" the edge of each of the previous pictures so you can take truely panaromic pictures. The camera even has a sensor to detect if the camera is turned sideways so your pictures will be orientated correctly when you download them to the computer.

This is a GREAT camera!

Great combination of features and value.......2001-08-16

I wrestled long and hard before I purchased this camera. This is my first every purchase of a digital camera. The film cameras that I have owned in the past have been mainly very simple "point-and-shoot" cameras, either 35mm or low end APS cameras. I wouldn't know an f-stop from a hole in the ground, so I wanted advanced features that I could learn to use as well as have a camera that was useable as a point-and-shoot camera.

One of the biggest features about this camera for me was the support for the IBM Microdrive. I purchase this camera witht a 340 MB Microdrive. At full resolution, it will hold about 245 pictures. A 3 megapixel pictures takes up about 1.4 mb in a jpeg format, so I wanted the extra storage space without buying a bunch of memory cares. The software packaged with the camera makes transferring the picture to my computer very easy.

The camera comes with 64 "Bestshot" macros that have automatic settings for many different types of shots that you want to take. The macros can be used to set pictures for different scenes such as sunsets, low light photos, etc. Given my lack of photographic sophistication, it has a number of settings that allow me to take very nice pictures.

In my opinion, the quality of pictures from this camera is comparable to other high end 3 megapixel cameras such as the Nikon 995. The big difference though is that for about the same price, you can get this camera with a 340 MB microdrive vs. a 16mb memory card for other 3 megapixel cameras. I am very happy with my purchase.

REFURBISHED hard-drive in a VERY LOW-QUALITY enclosure.......2006-07-07

Be forewarned that this drive -- like all MDT products -- is REFURBISHED/RECERTIFIED (and NOT brand new). Moreover, based on my past experience with equipment sold by NARRO, his enclosures are VERY low quality; they tend to breakdown within a year, leaving you with an internal drive only (which, as mentioned earlier, is REFURBISHED to begin with!). While I have nothing against this particular seller (who is re-selling so-called "new" equipment that he/she purchased), I do advise buyers NOT to purchase products that were originally marketed by NARRO!

Last time I replaced this toner with an original l75 canon cartridge. I don't notice a difference and this was 1/3 the price. Of course I am only using this for 3 weeks, but so far no issues at all.

A Good Purchase.......2006-01-20

I bought this camera on-line during January 2006 and discovered it to be slightly bulkier than I expected. It's definitely not something you could carry around with you in your trouser pocket. On initial inspection everything seems in a reasonably intuitive position. The menus are on a simple up down left right curser and once set most options that you might want to change depending on your environment are on marked buttons on the outside. Mine came with a 64meg SD card which I quickly swapped for a 256 meg card which should enable me to store hundreds of photos at a reasonable resolution.
One thing the shocked me was the apparent power consumption. However after a little investigation I discovered that standard alkaline AA batteries cannot hold a high enough voltage for long enough and therefore the camera dies while there is still a good charge in the batteries. Therefore you must purchase rechargeable NiMh batteries with the camera. These are designed to hold a high voltage for far longer than standard batteries and I have not had to change mine yet after about 4 hours of use. Otherwise you will be replacing standard batteries every 20 mins or so.
Otherwise picture quality is good, there is no noticeable delay between pressing the button and the camera taking a picture. Downloading to a pc is akin to taking data off a usb memory card and requires no driver so long as you use Windows 2000 or XP.
All things considered it's a good buy for the £75 I paid.

I have just bought this camera for my daughter at a Super Walmart on sale for $160.00. Brand new & still wrapped in box.
Have yet to try it but it makes me feel better that I saved almost $90.00. Will let you know how it works.

acceptable results for price.......2004-01-17

I looked around a bit before I made my choice with the 3825. One of the places I looked was vivitar.com where I inspected the sample pictures taken with this camera. I was impressed with their results and a little confused with the one review that complained about "grainy" pictures.
There's a bit of a learning curve involved with this unit regarding making changes for indoor shooting and also being able to view the LCD when outdoors, but both can be accomplished with mastery of the manual.
I guess what hooked me on the 3825 was the discounted price of $198.00. The camera originally listed for $367.00.
The specs on this page are (or were) incorrect about the power requirements. It takes 2 AA cells.

I did encounter grainy output when using the digital zoom outdoors, although the output through the optical zoom is excellent.
I didn't realise that the pictures in digital cameras default to JPEG files. This results in colors derived from a somewhat limited spectrum. Not that this will make a difference for the average "point and shoot" enthuasist. But for closeup work where one requires an _exact_ match (like a glass lampshade) one will experience a subtle difference. I supppose all cameras in this price range save their output in this format and if one needs _exact_ color replication one must either use film or a higher end digital camera.
Notwithstanding my last comment I enjoy using the 3825 and look forward to many years of faithful service from it.

Grainy results.......2003-12-27

Bought this for my son. Most common functions were intuitive but we still needed to read the manual a lot. However, the pics were very grainy. My old 2MP Fuji Finepix had better resolution. We returned the Vivitar for a Samsung Digimax 360 (3.2 MP) which we like much better.

REVISION!!!! I have received the camera and it is very nice. Do NOT believe the advertising - it DOES include a 16mB memory card and it only needs 2 AA batteries, NOT 4! It is a nice camera and well worth the new price!
