Compaq Presario 2580US Notebook PC (2.30-GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive)
Manufacturer: Compaq ProductGroup: Personal Computer Binding: Personal Computers Accessories:
ASIN: B0000D8HAN |
Product Description
Want a great value in a convenient, all-in-one design? Check out the Compaq Presario 2580US notebook PC - specifically its excellent performance and high-speed connectivity. The clincher: It's got 54g integrated wireless LAN functionality.Amazon.com Product Description
Though not a top-of-the-line thoroughbred when compared to today's costlier upscale offerings, Compaq's value-priced Presario 2580us Notebook is nevertheless far more powerful than comparably priced models of just a year or two ago and quite ready to handle many of today's most demanding mobile applications.Measuring 12.96 by 10.72 by 1.79 inches and weighing 7.5 pounds, the Presario 2580us Notebook is of average size for a notebook. Compaq has loaded the unit with a powerful 2.3 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, 512 MB of DDR SDRAM memory (upgradeable to 1024 MB) and an ATI Mobility Radeon graphics chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. As such, the system should suffice for all 2-D and many 3D applications, though it may have frame rate troubles when rendering ultra-complex 3-D games and animation/drawing packages.
The Presario 2580us Notebook features several welcome amenities, including an oversized 15-inch XGA TFT display screen (maximum resolution 1024x768), an 88-key keyboard, a TouchPad with scroll bar and dedicated vertical scroll up/down pad, and a pair of JBL Pro speakers. At 40 GB, the enclosed hard disk is sufficient for most purposes but may not offer enough room for today's true power users. The system's optical drive permits CD and DVD playing and CD recording but does facilitate the burning of DVDs.
With the Presario 2580us Notebook, your communication options are virtually limitless. In environments with wired connections, you may select from a low-speed 56K modem or high-speed 10/100BASE-T Ethernet LAN. When hardwiring is a problem, you can stay in touch with the unit's integrated 54g wireless LAN. Other key components include a trio of fast USB 2.0 ports, a single IEEE 1394 port for interaction with devices such as digital camcorders, a single PC Card slot, and a standard array of connections. The impressive bundled software package includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Quicken New User Edition, Microsoft Works and a range of multimedia and Internet utilities.

Patrick.......2004-02-08
Bigger processor means more heat and more fan. Very quiet fan compared to other models. Much faster than an P3 I've used.
Get this computer, download every update from HP.com and enjoy it.
Also a great computer to swap out the stock memory, put in 1024 MB of RAM and it flies.
Best computer I've ever owned.
LOVE IT.......2004-01-19
awesome.......2004-01-10
What a horrible piece of junk !!!.......2003-12-17
1) Very poor display resolution
2) Very poor washed out weak display colors
3) Very slow for a 2.4 GHz P4, slower than my P3 1.0Ghz
4) AWFUL sound, not even close to my other Presario
5) An AC adapter that has such a poor pin input fit it won't stay plugged in even when untouched!!! Just falls out.
6) Super loud fan that seems to be perpetually on, you can't think or hear anything else with this thing!
I understand what happened here I think. Since the time I bought my other very excellent Presario two years ago, Compaq was bought out by HP, (who always built cheap, terrible computers from China),... and now they have turned Compaq Presarios into the same cheap junk HP always made.
I will NEVER by another Compaq/HP, and this piece of trash goes back for refund tonight! (Ughh, I'll get stuck with a fat restock fee but that's better than being stuck with this piece of garbage masquerading as a supposedly decent home notebook)
DON'T EVER BUY AN HP/COMPAQ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great.......2003-10-27

Compaq Presario X1040US Notebook PC (1.50-GHz Pentium M (Centrino), 512 MB RAM, 80 GB, DVD+R/RW/CD-RW Combo Drive)
Manufacturer: Compaq ProductGroup: Personal Computer Binding: Personal Computers Accessories:
ASIN: B0000D8HNM |
Amazon.com Product Description
Though its raw processor speed may initially seem somewhat average, Compaq's Presario x1040us will easily handle most typical leisure or professional mobile tasks and even many 3-D computer games and high-end 3-D graphic design programs. In fact, the unit is not only more powerful than many bigger, bulkier portable computers, but also better equipped too. For a compact, capable and full-featured notebook, you can't do much better than the futuristic Presario x1049us.The secret behind the Presario x1040us is Intel's new Centrino technology. Centrino refers to a triumvirate of interconnected elements -- an Intel Pentium M CPU, an Intel 855 chipset, and an Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 network connection -- all of which work hand-in-hand to make your notebook fast, lightweight, battery-efficient and wirelessly connected.
At the heart of the unit is an Intel Pentium M processor with a seemingly middling 1.5 GHz clock speed. Being a Centrino processor, however, it also sports one full MB of Level 2 cache to greatly improve speed in frequently accessed applications. Compaq has added 512 MB of 266 MHz DDR SDRAM system memory (expandable to two full GB), an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics card with a generous 64 MB dedicated video memory, and an absolutely massive 80 GB hard disk.
Eminently portable at just 14 by 10 by 1.3 inches and 6.5 pounds, the Presario x1040us nevertheless features a variety of desirable amenities, including a surprisingly spacious 15.4-inch widescreen WXGA display screen capable of 1280 by 800 resolution, a pair of JBL-designed speakers, an 88-key keyboard with touch pad and scroll bar, and a state-of-the-art DVD+R/RW/CD-RW optical drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs and write home movies to long-lasting DVD media.
Communication options include a 56K dial-up modem for low-speed Internet and email access, a high-speed RJ-45 LAN connector, and integrated Intel Pro/Wireless 2100 802.11b wireless LAN for those times when you can't or don't want to plug in. To ensure top-notch connectivity, the unit features an IEEE 1394 FireWire port for quick data streaming with external peripherals such as digital camcorders, a trio of fast USB 2.0 ports for other plug and play devices, an S-Video TV-Out, and an SD/MMC digital media slot for memory cards from high-tech devices such as digital cameras.

Nice Features.......2004-05-23
Here are some minor moans:
- Definitely not a gamer's laptop (although you can play most games if you set quality to low).
- The 'switch' that senses the laptop is closed is placed (awkwardly) right next to the power button. So it is quite easy to hit and cause the laptop to go to standby (I like the laptop to go to standby when i close it).
Only major moan:
- The CD Drive. The drive that comes with this laptop is good except for two things: 1. It does not write to DVD+RW media rated at 4X and above. It is highly unlikely to find a DVD+RW disc rated at 2.4X (which this drive *requires*).. 2. It does not recognize some brands of CD-Rs. Up to now, I only had problems with Memorex Black CDR's.. I was quite annoyed since these CDRs are really high quality.. I presume it is the black coating that is the problem since there is no problem with Imation silver CDRs and Memorex DVD-Rs.
It seems that both of these problems can be solved with a firmware upgrade, which brings me to another issue. This laptop does not have a floppy drive. Therefore, firmware updates are tricky..(sony suggests using a USB floppy drive which is just ridiculous)..
Good one by Comapq.......2004-02-04
Experience:
The pc is great, good performance, good price, and sleek design (not as sleek as the equivalent Toshiba or Sony though, but definitely better designed compared to thesister-model from HP, the company that currently owns Compaq). Encarta Online, Acrobat reader and other software were preinstalled.
80GB hard disk is huge, however, it operates at 4200rpm speed, which is relatively slow, I recommend "splitting the HDD" by creating another partition of say 40GB, this will increase the access speed of the hard disk, and you may safely store your personal data on the second partition (you can do that using Partition Magic, or using FDisk and then reinstall the OS if you're an advanced user).
SD Card Reader is also a good idea, since I don't have to use my digi-cam's cradle anymore... oh and one important thing, I had an issue with the SD card reader a week after I got this pc, where it (the notebook) just froze every time I tried to read/write onto the SD card. I contacted HP Support and we had a couple online-support chat sessions, HP reps were very friendly and tried to help, but unfortunately non of them was able to solve this problem... later I discovered that installing some updates from (Recommended Updates) section in Windows Update site caused this issue. See, Microsoft develops an update batch that will be published under (Recommended Updates) until it's fully tested to comply, and that's when they move it up to (Critical Updates), therefore, I suggest that when updating your OS, install (Critical Updates) and only those updates that you really need from (Recommended Updates) such as (Media Player 9, Windows Messenger 4.7, etc.)
I personally recommend this notebook. Good luck in making your correct buying decision.

Compaq Presario 2585us Notebook PC (2.80-GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD+R/RW/CD-RW Combo Drive)
Manufacturer: Compaq ProductGroup: Personal Computer Binding: Personal Computers Accessories:

Amazon.com Product Description
The simple truth is that you can save a lot of money by buying a notebook that doesn't quite match the current ever-decreasing standards of miniaturization. Though not exceedingly bulky at 12.96 by 10.72 by 1.79 inches and 7.5 pounds, Compaq's Presario 2585us Notebook PC is a bit larger than today's ultra-portables and therefore carries a surprisingly affordable price tag considering its high-end speed and versatility.Compaq has loaded the Presario 2585us with more power than most users will ever need. Heading the list of components is a speedy 2.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor and 512 MB of fast 266 MHz RAM memory. This combination will easily handle even the most challenging applications and multitasking, although the system's ATI Mobility Radeon 3-D video controller features just 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory and thusly isn't equipped to efficiently render ultra-complex 3-D games or animations. It should, however, be more than enough for midlevel 3-D applications.
The Presario 2585us features several welcome amenities, including an oversized 15-inch XGA TFT display screen (maximum resolution 1024x768), an 88-key keyboard, a TouchPad with dedicated vertical scroll up/down pad, and a pair of JBL Pro Performance speakers. At 60 GB, the enclosed hard disk is sufficient for most purposes and should have a few gigabytes left over for a library of music or video files. Impressively, the system's optical drive permits not only basic CD burning and playing and DVD playing but also DVD burning. Via the unit's integrated FireWire port, users can download home movies from their digital camcorders, then edit them and record them to digital media
With the Presario 2585us, your communication options are virtually limitless. In environments with wired connections, you can select from a low-speed 56K modem or high-speed 10/100BASE-T Ethernet LAN. When hardwiring is a problem, you can stay in touch with the unit's integrated 54g wireless LAN. Other key components include a trio of fast USB 2.0 ports, an S-Video TV-Out, a single PC Card slot, and a standard assorent of connections. It's pretty good!.......2004-02-19
1) The fan is loud, as others have proclaimed
2) The DVD player freezes at the start of a movie -I've worked with Compaq support from their web site for a couple of days and found that I needed to download Softpaq SP23136 which updates the drivers. Their customer service is nice (online chat) but I have to contact them at least three times in three days to finally find the problem.
3) For a P4, it seems very slow compared to my home PC (which is four years old).
Overall, it was a good value for my money ... (as soon as I work out the bugs).
I love it.......2004-02-10
