Dell has gon to *ell.......2006-10-27
Dude, don't buy a Dell. I bought Dell's years ago and they purred along for years. When I upgraded the computers in my office this time, I bought Dells - against the advice of my computer consultant.
When they came, they didn't work. I bought the deluxe service package - the one where they come on site if they need to. Here's how that works:
1. If you call, 3 of 4 times you're on hold for 15 minutes, then there is a click and you're disconnected. 45 minutes on hold, then someone picks up the receiver and hangs up on you. If you call 40 times this will happen 30 of the 40.
2. Once you get them, they will say it's a software problem and it's not their responsibility - call Microsoft. If you call Microsoft, they tell you that, since you bought it from Dell, they are the reseller, and you need to deal with them on all operating system issues.
3. You call back to Dell, and they try to sell you more support and refuse to address the issue (after hanging up on you three times first).
4. I finally called Geeks on Call - they looked at the machines - said it was a 'bad build' and that it was a Dell problem. I paid another $500 to them to get the machines running.
5. I asked Dell for the money back for the service contract - they refuse.
Grab It While You Can.......2002-05-03
I have this same computer. I have had it for over 5 years. I bought it refurbished then for over a thousand with the same features and CPU. I have never had to replace a part on it. It has been hauled, rained on, dropped, ate up with viruses and nothing ever failed. I still have it and it works like new even now. You can't go wrong with this deal for internet or personal computing.

Not great, but it was free.......2006-07-10
My boss was tossing the computer, and I picked it up and made it a Linux server. It's taken about 5 attempts at installation (so far) but hopefully I can get it to work.
The computer is slow as hell (450 Mhz Pentium II) and has trouble running Linux. Obviously, no one would buy this computer as a primary machine, but it has worked in our lab for about 7 years. The fact that it still runs is encouraging.

Still Going After 10 Years.......2007-07-18
I'm away at college, and when I was home last, I took back to campus with me my old Optiplex GX1, the computer I'd basically grown up with. I've had that machine for probably ten years.
And she still runs.
At 400 MHz and 128 MB RAM, she's not gonna be winning any performance contests, but I wiped her OS and loaded Debian, and now I've got a fantastic print/SSH/web server that can run headless with little or no maintenance.

Great computer if you recieved it for free, and modify it........2004-11-08
This GX1 is what I have, and modified. I had this machine for over one year. I have recieved it from a friend, which was upgrading to newer workstations in his business.
Even though this machine is dinosaur, it does quite fine on video, but cannot run Premiere Pro due to machine limitations (duh). Managed to play various games (GTA 3, GTA: Vice City), with a recent video card (ATI 9200-generic, 128MB, Video out, DVI, PCI). Did use an ATI All-in-Wonder VE (PCI, 32MB, MPEG Encode/Decode), and managed to put FireWire (IEEE 1394) card to run mainly video capture. And put in a generic 56kbps telephone modem. Some variants have AGP, and more PCI slots. This machine is on the borerline of DVD recording capability (takes a year and four days! exaggerating), though it's ridiculous and very excessive, I just use the recorder for storage purposes (LiteON, 4x DVD+/-R/RW).
Compared to today's Dell machines, the late '90s models have been fairly reliable, and easy to modify (no jumpers to set). This was a model made in the company's better days.
My model does not have the branded monitor, but is using an IDEK Iiyama 17" BNC/VGA monitor (1992), very "old school".
This machine is given three (3) stars strictly by design. Performance ratings would be much less, like half of a star or a negative (impossible). The case is easy to open, but is not easy to work with cabling. The expansion card (PCI x3) is easy to remove from the main board, by using a beige plastic lever. Custom computers surpass this convenience with slide-out trays, but for a mainstream manufacturer in 1998, it's quite nice for free!

Amazon.com Product Description
Early Adopters Pick: April 2003. This home theater system includes the world's slimmest 5-Disc DVD changer, as well as a six-speaker system.
The SC-HT700 handles the audio end of a home theater, giving you surround sound decoding, amplification, and playback through a specially matched six-speaker system (left, center, right, left and right surround, and low-frequency subwoofer). The five-disc carousel system's DVD-Audio playback makes it adept at music as well as movies, offering super high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) sound. DVD-Audio discs provide multichannel and stereo sound, incredible storage capacity, and unique bonus materials not available on regular audio CDs.
DVD movies will look and sound great through the system's 54 MHz/10-bit video decoder, video depth enhancer, progressive-scan video output (for use with high-definition and HD-ready televisions), and Dolby Digital and DTS discrete 5.1-channel surround decoding and rendering. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, providing higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.
The speaker set includes four satellite speakers (front and rear left and right) powered by 45 watts each, a 90-watt center-channel speaker (critical for handling most of a movie's dialogue), and a powerful, 170-watt subwoofer specially designed for unobtrusive placement. All speakers are magnetically shielded to protect your TV from distortion induced by the speakers' magnetic fields. In addition, a digital-synthesized FM/AM tuner lets you listen to your favorite radio stations.

Good...AT FIRST!.......2005-11-21
Like some of the other reviews I also have had the problem of the loud POP sounds and loss of audio after 2 years of ownership. I have been told that it is the capacitors going bad on the board inside the bass module. Because all of the components run from this board- if the board goes bad your sunk. I am currently trying to get it fixed. The system sounded great for 2 years and I was very happy with it, but in the long run you get what you pay for. Cheap system, short lifespan.
My experience with this system..........2005-10-24
Let me start out that I two DVD systems. One is a high end Yamaha 7-1 system that is absolute tops. It is in my den in the basement and it's mom & dad's adult entertainment system. The second system I have is this one.
I have read all 43 reviews and to be honest I frankly don't understand the negativity of some of the poster's. This is an excellent entry level HTiaB of that I am positive. I've owned this system for 2+ years and I've zero problems with it. It resides in the family room and is the unit we use for the kids and family time. I have it hooked up to a Toshiba 26" Widescreen HDTV (TV not LCD) and it performs very well in Cinema 2 mode. I don't mind the lack of digital outputs mainly because the TV comes with 2 component sets so there is one for the HD cable box and one for the DVD player. The audio is fine...as I'm typing this I'm watching X-Men 2 in DTS mode and the sound is great. The engineering is somewhat weird with the Sub-woofer supplying the power and speaker connections, but after the initial "well how about that" it's not a problem. I have a DVD lens cleaner disc and use that every month. It works very well in Progressive Scan mode providing the TV can handle it. Before the HDTV Toshiba we had a 25" Zenith analog TV that didn't have component hook ups. The S-video set up was OK, but it didn't handle the progressive scan that well, the Toshiba just blows it away. Another thing and this has been mentioned in other post is cables. I'm a firm believer in high end component cables. I bought a set of Monster Component and Audio cables and I tell ya it does make a difference.
To recap. For an entry level system for the feel of basic home theater it's a very good choice. If you prefer all the bells & whistles with multi channel options, digital connections and optical capabilities then this will not foot the bill (my Yamaha system fits that bill very, very well). I actually would rate this system a little higher than a 4, maybe 4.25.
DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF CRAP.......2005-08-03
I was really happy with this unit for the first year. Then it started making strange noises, once in a while. Now, 6 months later, once in a while is every 10 minutes. It lets out very loud POPS, an ear splitting squeal, and then the audio goes off completely. Shutting and restarting resets the audio, then it does it all over again. An internet search has shown me that many people have had this problem and it's not only this model, it's other Panasonics as well. Panasonic has done nothing to fix them. Don't waste your money. It may sound great out of the box, but right after the warranty wears off, it's disposable.
Good system, but DO NOT buy from jets994life.......2005-07-14
This is a good Home Theater system. But do not buy it from jets994life in the Amazon Marketplace. I had the worst online purchasing experience with this seller. He never shipped out my order, and told me I had to leave positive feedback before he could send it. Just a lier!
Stay away from Panasonic!.......2004-12-24
Customer Service - the Panasonic website claims this is very important to them. I had my home theater only 3-4 months when a VCR tape got stuck. I has now been at the service center for almost 4 months! When I am lucky enough to get a response from Panasonic (which is rare), they make promises of completion and/or replacement. But promises won't play the DVD's my family would have liked to watch together over the holidays. When we finally got through to the customer service center on the phone, they had the nerve to hand up on us twice. IF YOU WANT A COMPANY TO STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS - STAY AWAY FROM PANASONIC!!! I have truly given up hope of even getting my home theater back from the Panasonic service center.
