Amazon.com Review

If hearing broadcasts from around the world is your thing, the E10 from Etón just might be the tool you're looking for. While the radio doesn't have the powerful features and reception of its big brother, the E1XM, the E10's scaled-down feature set and size make it simpler to operate and carry. The E10 has a few surprises, too, like an intermediate frequency (IF) set control, an antenna trimmer, and a bandwidth control -- features you'd expect on a much larger tabletop unit.

Design and Controls
Measuring 7.5 x 4.5 x 1.25 inches, and weighing 1.3 pounds, the E10 is certainly in the compact radio category. Thankfully, the same rubberized coating that graces the exterior of the E1XM has been applied to the E10, giving it a stout and rugged feel. Most of the action can be found on the front of the unit, where you'll find a direct frequency entry keypad, as well as buttons for auto-scanning, up/down station selection, band selection, memory control, IF set, bandwidth, and slow/fast tuning. Meanwhile, power, sleep, and timer buttons are arrayed above the E10's speaker.

On the left side of the E10 you'll find a 3.5mm connector for an external FM or shortwave antenna. Etón generously includes a handy retractable antenna that can be plugged in here to enhance signal reception -- although there is a telescoping antenna on the top of the unit. In addition to a power port and stereo headphone jack, the side of the radio also sports an antenna gain switch that lets you choose between DX, normal and local modes, allowing you to tone down excessively strong AM or shortwave stations if need be. One curiosity is the "tone" switch, which lets you choose between bass and treble, but provides no adjustment for either one. We assume the switch is intended to enhance the lower or upper music ranges when selected, but the difference between the two settings wasn't that noticeable.

Three dials on the right side of the unit control manual tuning, antenna trim and volume. The knobs have a nice smooth action, but a note of caution here: The knobs can be easily -- very easily -- plucked from their posts. If you tend to jostle your gear around, you may find yourself looking for a lost knob.

In addition to AC power, the the E10 can run off of four supplied Ni-MH AA cells. These are automatically recharged when you plug the unit in. Of course, you can also use non-rechargeable AA cells in a pinch.

LCD Display
The E10's backlit display is crisp and clear, with a clean layout that makes it easy to control the radio's tuning, clock, and timer functions. A separate space in the upper right corner is provided for the clock display so you can view the time and tune the radio at the same time -- a nice touch. Selecting shortwave meter bands is a breeze with this display, as you just push the meter band button until the meter you want is displayed on the screen. The radio's memories are easy to browse and recall on the display, as well.

A retractable metal "foot" on the bottom of the E10 keeps it upright when you place it on a level surface. View larger.
Another interesting feature of the E10, and one that depends on the display for its functionality is the system set codes system. Using specific codes, you can modify the E10's factory settings via the display and the numeric kaypad. Some of the options include changing the tuning steps for AM, changing the clock format, and altering the FM frequency range for different geographic locations.

Tuning Options
Tuning the with E10 is pretty straightforward. The radio tunes MW (commonly known as AM), FM and shortwave signals, and you can choose from manual, auto-scan, direct frequency entry, or fine tuning modes. If you're new to shortwave, auto-scan will quickly become your friend. With it, we quickly made a lot of discoveries, and heard stations from all over the world -- although our limited language skills made it difficult to always know exactly to whom or what we were listening! We found the manual, up/down button press tuning the most laborious, but we liked the fine tuning accuracy made possible by the E10's tuning knob. With it, very meticulous tuning is possible, thanks to selectable fast or slow tuning modes.

We didn't have a chance to test the E10's two interference reduction methods -- the IF set control and the bandwidth selector -- but advanced users will surely find these functions highly useful. Another feature for advanced users, the antenna trimmer, effectively "matches" the antenna to the tuner for optimum performance in shortwave mode.

The E10's impressive memory system also deserves mention. With it, you can set up a huge catalog of stored frequencies -- 500 of them to be exact. Once stored, recalling all these memories is pretty easy, thanks to a straightforward on-screen interface that stores up to 50 memories across 10 memory "pages." You can also scan through your memories to rapidly find the frequencies that are currently broadcasting.

Amazon.com Product Description

If you're ready for the ultimate in portable radio technology, the E10 from Etón delivers. Part of Etón's Elite series of digital world radios, it features 550 programmable memories, manual and auto scan, precision tuning, and alarm clock features. It's the ideal way to listen to news, sports, and music from around the world. The E10 even allows internal recharging of its Ni-MH batteries (charger and batteries included).

Design and Controls
Weighing in at just a hair over one pound, the E10's sleek, modern cabinet is 7.5 inches across and just 1.5 inches deep. A built-in antenna on the top of the device handles AM, FM and shortwave reception. The front of the unit features a large LCD display that clearly shows all the radio's modes and selected functions. An evenly lit backlight enables display viewing under all lighting conditions, and the LCD's calibrated signal meter gives you a clear view of signal strength. A keypad below the screen allows illustrious shortwave listeners to directly enter their shortwave band of choice, giving instant access to known broadcasts. There's also a stereo/mono selector, a rotary volume control, and a rotary shortwave antenna trimmer.

Tuning options abound; you can choose from a digital tuning knob with a frequency lock and fast or slow settings, the aforementioned direct keypad frequency entry method, or automatic scan tuning. And when you have your station locked in, you can tweak the sound quality with a high and low tone control. And for AM and FM stations, there's even an automatic tuning system that enters receivable stations into the radio's memory so you can browse them later.

Tuning and Bands
The E10 is designed to receive shortwave, AM, AM medium wave, and FM signals. FM reception is robust, with tuning available in the 87-108 MHz ranges. shortwave signals can be received in the 1711 to 29999 range. A 9/10KHz step selector is provided for medium wave reception, as is a 1/5KHz step for the display of shortwave. Plus, there's a shortwave intermediate set feature that shifts the intermediate frequency to minimize interference during shortwave reception. While you make your broadcast discoveries, you can add them to the E1XM's programmable memory, which features 550 frequency entries, and a memory scan function lets you quickly browse your programmed entries.

Connections and Power
In addition to an external antenna jack for boosting signal levels, the E10 sports a headphone jack for private listening. The unit can be powered with the included AC adapter, four "AA" batteries, or via the built-in rechargeable battery.

Extras
The E10's digital clock can be set to display in 12 or 24 hour format. It also lets you wake up to your favorite station, while a sleep timer automatically shuts the radio off after a preset interval so you can drift off to sleep to the sound of the radio.

4 out of 5 stars E10 vs G5.......2007-08-19

I'm retired after 30 years of working with complex electronic systems so I have a sufficient background to make some reasonably insightful comments with regard to consumer electronics which are other than mere personal opinion. That said:

I believe cost vs. function favors the G5 (you get SSB) with its smaller size it has no loss of audio quality (lets face it few audiophiles buy these radios for their 'sound') and the dual conversion of the G5 is of benefit for the MW/SW enthusiast. It would be wonderful that the best of both were available in one receiver however until that happens I nominate the Grundig G5 as the better value.

I own both, use both and favor them above the Grundig S350DL which I also own and use. (I find it a bit bulky and a pain to transport although it is a technical whiz for what it is designed for).

Having said what I did I do find the Eton E10 AM/FM Shortwave Radio does a fine job. Excellent sensitivity and selectivity, good looking, has a richness of technical features. The attributes that many women would find worthy of being married to if it were but human.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice radio.......2007-07-22

Seems to be very well made and works well. A couple of things about it, the
bass & treble sw does nothing? The ear devices are worthless. Very hard to stand up.

5 out of 5 stars The best radio, period........2007-07-16

This radio is amazing. The reception is great and the sound quality is superb. It's very easy to use once you've read the manual. Features, like being able to recharge batteries (several types), make it ultra-efficient. I could say that a weather/emergency band would make it better, but if there was a real emergency it would be all over AM and FM. The only problem I had with this radio was with one of the standing props. There's one for leaning and one for upright. The leaning one is plastic and broke off shortly after I bought it. The upright is metal, though, and works great. Excellent radio.

5 out of 5 stars Eton 10 - Tecsun PL550.......2007-03-16

This Eton radio is the U.S. domestic version of the Chinese Tecsun PL-550 all-band pocket sized radio. The Chinese version is legended in the native language and utilitarian in appearance and less expensive. The Eton is, well, in English with slight curves. I have used and tested other Tecsun produced radios, including the PL-200 (Eton 10) and the Grundig eTraveller VII. This radio, like the other Tecsun models, has excellent frequency discrimination, as well as the ability to directly enter the frequency desired (if you know it), or scan through the AM, FM and many shortwave bands, find the stations you like and store their frequencies. Closely allied, for example, FM stations within 200 kHz (only the strongest will be heard on most commercial FM receivers) of each other, can be picked up with clarity, positioning the manuverable whip antenna. Very, very few radios, excepting expensive car radios, can boast such performance in the Unites States. Now on the market are other comparable radios, all made by Tecsun in China using the very same sophisicated reception circuitry regelated previously to expensive shortwave receivers. This model has other features as well: two preset wake-up times for programs from preselected stations, scanning of all bands for stations and an antenna trimmer which permits optimizing reception on weakly received broadcasts, some 500 station memories and special reception selectivity for shortwave stations whose frequencies are almost overlapping. For the price, this radio is simply an excellent value, but people wishing to receive shortwave broadcasts are warned: shortwave reception from this radio, and every other shortwave radio for that matter, of stations other than the powerful broadcasters, benefits enormously from the use of an external long wire antenna. Tecsun does provide a retractable wire antenna with the radio. Alas, as with almost all radios this size, there is no single side band (SSB) reception, an enhancement that, defying digital technology, actually requires listener intervention to optimize and has great potential, but has, for the present at least, been consigned to the province of the technical listener more interested in ascertaining distant reception than actual broadcast information. The Dalai Lama for all his 5,000 watts SSB from Tibet can not be heard on this radio. China Radio shortwave, at 150,000 watts conventiona AM shortwave, with Canadian relay stations, does just fine. Australian radio, at the same power, Radio Havana, Radio Serbia, Croatia, Russia, Netherlands, Sweden, India, Israel, etc., at lesser power, and some with and most without relay stations, are also heard clearly on the Eastern seaboard during their times of broadcast - usually in the early evening EST.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-03-08

I had dreams of listening to stations in English on the European continent. I have not been able to locate any. Most of the stations I have located are from the United States or in Spanish or other foreign languages.

5 out of 5 stars Strong Performer on FM and AM with Good Ergonomics.......2006-04-05

I've toted several radios to my work office, which thanks to thick concrete walls and all sorts of electronic gadgets, is a high-interference nightmare for all my AM/FM reception needs.

The Eton E10 is strong on all bands at home but in my office it gets weak FM. However, its saving grace is its strong AM, which performs even better than my big Grundig S350 and my Kaito 1103.

So I'm using my E10 as my sole AM receiver radio and my Grundig S350 for my FM needs.

For home use, the best PLL dual-conversion radio with presets is hands down the Kaito 1103, which has jaw-dropping FM sensitivity and beats the Eton E10 easily in the FM department. But for AM my E10 has been my strongest performer.

Update: I just bought a Grundig G4000, which is by far superior to the E10, both in reception sensitivity and speaker sound. The modern look of the E10 makes it tempting but don't be fooled: Get the Grundig G4000. It's as sensitive as my big Grundig S350 DL and that's saying a lot. Plus I've got preset memories.

Additionally, the Grundig G4000 separates AM stations better than the E10 and the S350. Here in Los Angeles 1150 gets two stations competing on the E10 and the S350, but the G4000 locks in on 1150 AM perfectly.

Batteries would not charge. I called Eton, a real person answered and conected me to a tech. He shipped me new batteries and they charged. This is my first of this type so I can't compare it. I am in a marginal AM area
and the reception is good, FM is very good. Sound is good but does not compare with my Tivoli radio. Operation is easy but reading the manual is required.

5 out of 5 stars Great Item.......2006-09-04

When i purchased this radio i was sceptical. I turned out to be a great deal! I love this radio. Even my freinds like it! I have had no problems with the side knobs falling off, and i can't see what that fuss is about. Great radio and id recomend it to anyone! I have had hours of fun.

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This Radio.......2006-06-30

I purchased a remanufactured Eton E10. My first problem that I had was that the radio batteries or recharging system did not fuction. There was no way to recharge the batteries.I sent the radio back to Amazon and asked for a replacement only to have the knobs fall off as soon as the 2nd radio was taken out of the box. The moral of this review is, "You get what you pay for." 2nd radio is also beig sent back to Amazon. Save you self time and buy the Sony 7600GR.

You get what you pay for idiots. If you want to record huge boring family vacations do not buy this camera! But if you just want to have fun and record little tid-bits this camera is for you. Who wants to watch more than a 3 minute movie anyway! I agree that the quality isn't up to standard but who cares the coolness makes up for that!!!! The other reviews are quite discouraging and seem to be written by idiots! Dont despair this is a great camera. Maybe look around a little more if your a SERIOUS PHOTOGRAPHER! Good Luck

I did a lot of research about this camera before buying it and now I can't help but wonder what people were thinking!! I agree it's a cute camera that is good for carrying around in your purse or in your pocket. But I think that if you have ever used ANY kind of camera before, there is no way you will accept the quality of pictures that this camera produces (even if it's just for email).

Pros:
1) Its really small and cute. It attracts a lot of attention.
2) It is easy to use.
3) Even the 32 MB card that comes with it takes a good amount of photos and mpegs.
4) The mpegs are pretty easy to transfer on email.

Cons:
1)All the photos are blurred if you are not at the EXACT distance you should be shooting from.
2)The camera is much better off without its zoom feature
3)You can absolutely forget about taking shots indoors or at night (or dusk, for that matter). Bright sunlight (but not direct sunlight) is the only way you can get visible images. The flash is not much of a help.

Conclusion: It takes really bad-quality images. Maybe if it cost 40-50 $, I might be a little bit more satisfied with it. But for anything above that, I would not recommend it to anyone.

This is a nice looking gadget. Very poor picture quality. Can not get the software to work for music recording. Having problems with the camera shutting down . Thought it was a defective battery so bought another and the same problem. Camera shuts down before i can even get to menue. All i can say is that is is cute. I bought another tiny camera for my purse that takes video and stills and that camera [didn't] cost [that much] and i get excellent 8 by 10 prints.
