Item was defective out of the box. Customer Service wasr not helpful at all. Tech Support people know ONLY how to tell you to check the cable connections(speaker, video etc.)--Even after I insisted that the problem was "DVD Draw Does NOT open"-- This is after trying to understand them--TERRIBLE LITTLE ENGLISH!
Their So-called Service centers (in FL at least) are run by independent shops and are REALLY BAD! The shops apparently have a bad working relationship with GOVIDEO and therfore do not want to do service. CAVEAT EMPTOR! RUN when you see one of this company's products. For a couple of dollars more you can get a "REAL BRAND NAME" and you will be happier. That is what I ended up doing(bought a Brand Name). One Year later Still have problems ...It only works as a VCR not DVD+VCR

I had the same problems as the others who complained about poor quality on the VCR side of this machine. The picture has white lines or sometimes a wavy pattern when you use the RCA or coax outputs, there is no S video for the VCR. I determined problem is definitely with the machine because they are present when I ONLY have the outputs connected to the TV, nothing on the input side. I have been going back and forth with Sonic blue/Go video for since 12/2002, it's now 8/2003 and I've finally given up. There's no way they will admit anything is wrong with their machine and they won't refund me any money at all. I've sent it back to them at least 5 times, sometimes they sent a new one, sometimes a refurbished, and once the person who I talked to actually looked at the picture himself so I'm told. He and the engineers couldn't see anything wrong with the picture, yeah right, so they replaced one of the boards and sent it back. Same problem when I got it back. I started to do more research and found the reviews here that were saying exactly what I had told them. When confronted with that, they said it was not a defect just the quality of the machine I had purchased, and if I expected better quality it would cost $1,000. It's funny because this is their top of the line. They offered to look at it again but I declined because I'm tired of wasting my time and money.
Also, the pause/slow motion picture is terrible also. Beware if you want to use this on any of your existing tapes because the picture is badly distorted and jumpy. Even tapes recorded on machine, though better, are nowhere near what you would expect quality wise.
This was true of every machine they sent me otherwise I wouldn't be giving it that bad of a review. The only good thing I can say is it has a lot of features. That and it made me look for something else so I bought a Panasonic DVD recorder w/80 gig. harddrive, it's fantastic so far.

The DVD play back is outstanding, though the 360 degree round button used for fast forward and rewind is tough to master.
My unit started failing on the sound playback of Videotapes. Sound got softer then quit completely. I cleaned the heads, to no avail. It must go for repair, warranty is only 90 days for labor, one year for parts. Estimated repair labor is $60.00
I recommend not buying any DVD/ VCR without a 1 year warranty. For [item price] I would have expected this unit to function for at least a year! I have a 10 year old VCR and an 8 year old one that still work fine, cannot understand why a 6 month old VCR should fail.
Note also that the instruction manual that comes with this does not address all questions, and that online manual is just a .pdf of the printed one. This forces you to call the 800 number, with waits of up to 30 minutes on hold, to get your questions answered.

It's been interesting to read the other reviews on the DVR5100 unit, as I've used the predecessor DVR5000 model for two years now. The VCR picture quality is sometimes alittle "liney" and the VHS audio quality lacks sparkle, but no more than any other mid-range VCR machine I've ever owned, and not nearly as bad as what some other reviwers have reported. The lack of S-video from the VCR is annoying, and on the DVR5000, commercials cannot be skipped, despite trade specifications to the contrary, although I've read that the commercial skip works fine on the current DVR5100 model. DVD picture and sound quality is great, and sound quality from CDs, CDRs and MP3-formatted CDs is good, if not spectacular. In terms of reliability, my machine has been problem free, without any tape chewing, despite heavy usuage. So reading the other reviews, perhaps there is a quality control problem with these units. Is this machine a good buy? Yes, as long as watching VHS is not your priority. Also, if you can put a new machine through its paces while still under warranty, you probably don't have a unit that's defective in the ways described in other reviews.

One of the reasons i wanted a combo unit was to view and convert dvds from grandchildren's recitals and other performances. I found out that MOST combo units do NOT read DVD-R or DVD RW. they only read commercial dvds. I just spent [a lot of money] on a dvd burner. with apple selling all these imovie tools and superdrives to burn dvds where is anyone going to be able to play them? Let's face it, we'd like to view our masterpieces on our tv...not a 17in computer screen. i am SOOOO disappointed. I've been searching for days for an alternative and still haven't found one that ready DVD-R!

Better than nothing, but there must be something better.......2003-04-19
It seems odd that this CD-RW drive is still on the market, as it is rather slow for today's demands. The Adaptec software that shipped with my drive had some sort of conflict, which made it impossible to record music. Fortunately, Pacific Digital customer service worked with me and got me NTI CD-Maker, which worked well enough for burning CDs but not as well for printing labels. Once everything is up and running, putting together a disk is fairly straightforward, albeit time consuming for music CDs. The end result is great: your own music mix on CD or a handy way to backup data files and photos off of your hard drive. I was thrilled to get this drive a few years ago. Now I think I would look for something with more bang for the buck.

This looks like an internal IDE that was put in a plastic box, with some conversion hardware that turns it into external USB. Maybe they're all like that - this is the only one I've ever bought. Makes you want to take it out of the plastic box and install it as an internal drive....
The drive has worked great. I used it to back up my crucial data just days before my old hard drive crashed. Only four stars because, 1) the plastic box/cd drive are hard to get back together, after you take them apart, and, 2) the Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4 software that came with it, hangs under certain circumstances, when you're backing up data. I've personally never seen any 5-star burner software, but I haven't worked with CD burners a whole lot.

Other products are cheaper & better.......2004-11-19
This is a similar product to the NetVanta 2050 so the same warnings about endless upgrades adding to price and problems with the claims of the sales lit. vs. reality also apply.
We chose the AdTran NetVanta 2050 because we were looking for a dedicated router/bridge that would act as a firewall and provide IPvSec VPN access to our Windows network from the Internet. First off, it can't work as a bridge, it's only a router.
Secondly, the information on the AdTran Web site is at best misleading, or completely lacking, in such a way as to be misleading. For example, nowhere did it state that the unit does NOT come with VPN support, but that you need to purchase that separately, at about $170. This gets you a serial number which lets you download the "enhanced" firmware from their confusing Web site. So while the $260 price looked attractive, we ended up spending $430 to get firewall & VPN capabilities, and there's a lot of products out there that will do both out of the box for 1/3 or less the price.
Even if you decide to get the VPN capabilities, you'll then need to buy a separate AdTran Windows VPN client at $125 per 5 users, because it won't work with the VPN facilities built into Windows. And that client will just get packets between your remote PC and internal network, it doesn't help you autheticate to a Windows domain, making it difficult for anyone but a Power User to access Windows-based resources.
If you're willing to spend that much to buy two units to create a IPvSec VPN tunnel from one office location to another, this product would be fine, but again, there's better/cheaper products which will do same. But be warned that it only provides routing, not bridging, so if you're in a Windows environment, all it will do is share packets between two separate sites; you're stuck figuring out how to authenticate against separate Windows domains to access resources.
As a firewall, it doesn't offer any features beyond what other, less-expensive routers offer. As a VPN remote-access unit, it's useless compared to a number of Linksys and Cisco products designed to do that. And after reading tech/sales claims as to what it can do, only to keep finding out you need to keep purchasing add-ons to get that functionality is insulting and unethical.
Strengths:
Not many. The Web-based configuration support is good, but no better than competitors' products. Its price is not competitive nor does it offer the functionality that's really needed in most situations. 10 years ago this would have been a great product, today it's a dinosaur.

If you like wasting time, having to buy a lot of extras (and wait for them) and being really frustrated and unable to get anything working, then waiting around for hours for support call-backs, then this baby is for you. (sarcasm off)
Weaknesses:
To get all the functionality claimed in their sales information, you'll end up spending 2-4x the base price.
If you upgrade the firmware, you'll have to reset it to Factory Defaults and reconfigure it to get it working.
The VPN support for remote clients is simply the ability to route packets once you pay extra for their VPN firmware *and* however many lincenses for their VPN client software, and it still leaves you without an easy way to authenticate to Windows domains.
Their support makes you jump through a lot of hoops to prove you own the product and whatever upgrades before they'll stick you on a list to wait around for a call-back Their Web site is practically useless and the documentation poor and misleading.
After all our problem and calls/email to support, which was difficult, their "follow-up" on the support was to try and sell us three different "upgrade" and "support" services at a yearly fee! For a product that others make, you buy, plug in, and forget about. Support for a firewall/VPN router? Why? It should work or shouldn't.
This is a 1990 product in a 2004 world run by a company whose sales/marketing department is 10x bigger than their engineering dept.
Similar Products Used:
Look at anything by Linksys, Cisco or 3Com, and you'll find something that actually does what it claims without having to spend 2-4x the money on "upgrades" which still leave you with a product that doesn't solve today's products.
I'll avoid AdTran at all costs in the future. Stay away!

Item was twice the price once the "shipping costs" were assessed. No "extended warranty" was included, so I paid about $11.00 for a ten cent teeny little camera holder. Ace Digital refuses to answer angry e mails. Just a gyp. I feel that this seller should be removed from Amazon. They are clearly thieves.

I bought the case and "extended warranty" and when it arrived, the warranty card said " must be registered within 10 days of your retail purchase" which in my case was months earlier, but there was no mention of this in the Amazon ad. Further, the envelope said "see inside for details" - there was nothing inside.

I can't really rate the extended coverage because I haven't tried to use it yet but I was going to buy a case for the camera anyway and this bundle was a good price. When I first looked at the case, I didn't think the camera would fit because it was so small. I was wrong and I like the fact that the case is small because it fits easily in my purse or attached to the belt of my fanny pack. I am happy with the purchase.
