Amazon.com Product Description

The R6640's high-quality recording ability and easy operation make it a great replacement for your VCR. The slender, high-styled component makes a great as a DVD player, too, especially when used with today's high-definition and HD-ready TVs. As a recorder, the R6640 lets you capture your favorite television shows and archive your treasured home videos to long-lasting DVD+R (write-once) and DVD+RW (rewriteable) discs. The recorder's built-in NTSC TV tuner and onscreen user interface permits up to 8 timer recordings over a period of a month, with 5 recording speeds providing between 1 and 6 hours of content on each DVD disc. It includes DoMiNoFX, too: a patented video-processing technology that digitally enhances and refines the picture quality during recording. This results in visibly superior recordings, and a dramatic improvement when recording from noisy source material, such as VHS tapes or weak TV signals.

The R6640's versatile playback features include progressive-scan video outputs and support for recordable CDs filled with MP3 audio files and JPEG images. A variety of video and audio inputs--including front-panel connections for fast, temporary hookups--grant connection to virtually all televisions and home theater components. An easy-to-use full-function remote control commands all the action.

The R6640 comes with GoVideo's innovative AutoPlay feature, designed to skips ads, trailers, and menus, jumping right to the start of your movie. Simply place the disc in the tray, press the play key, and the movie starts without interruption. Further, an innovative feature called YourDVD automatically searches for your preferences every time you load a DVD. The player will find and select your preferred audio, subtitle, and surround sound settings (if available) so you don't have to wade through menus to set them up yourself.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the R6640 stands ready to deliver the full playback potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Connections include a pair of composite- and S-video inputs, an RF antenna input, and an IEEE 1394 DV (digital video) input for a direct, high-quality connection with a digital camcorder.

DVD+RW discs require no finalizing: you can record, eject, and play them with minimal fuss, thanks to "background formatting." This feature, which lowers total burning time, is an advantage over the "dash" formats. Other DVD+RW advantages include on-disc content editing and multisession writing. And, through DVD+RW and DVD+R's compatibility with most existing DVD players, they're a great way for you to share your special memories with family and friends.

To help you navigate the transition from VCR to DVD recording, GoVideo's "white-glove customer care" includes free telephone assistance in making your first recording, should you need it.

What's in the Box
DVD player/recorder, a blank recordable DVD, a full-function remote control, remote batteries, an RF coaxial audio/video cable (5 feet), a stereo analog audio/composite-video interconnect (5 feet), and a user's manual.

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy!!!.......2006-03-20

I purchased this recorder and was pleased with it until it froze while I was recording. The only way to unfreeze it was to unplug the unit. When you do this, you lose everything you previously recorded. I returned the unit and got a replacement (refurbished unit I found out later). After a week, the same thing happened again. I returned and received 2 more units. The last unit I asked for a brand new one, but who knows if it really was. Even this one did the same thing. I can't tell you how much material I have permanently lost because of this recorder. Stay away from this unit and anything else GoVideo puts out there or you'll be sorry. One more thing if you do buy this unit, make sure you return it within 30 days of purchasing when you have problems, and you will have them. If after 30 days, GoVideo will make you pay $79 for a replacement and it's a refurbished machine.

1 out of 5 stars GO VIDEO - WORST COMPANY I'VE EVER DEALT WITH.......2006-02-16

I bought a unit from GO Video and experienced horrors with their customer service as mentioned in other reviews.

My unit came without any of the accessories and after 6 weeks of talking to more than a half dozen people (with more runaround than you can even begin to imagine) at go video, I still have a unit that will not work.

avoid this manufacturer!!

1 out of 5 stars what a piece of ...........2006-02-15

First of all, I have the GoVideo Dual Deck VCR player which I got about 5 years ago and that works excelently, so when it came time to upgrade my DVD player, I thought...
"why not GoVideo"?

I"ll tell you why not...

Their DVD player/recorder is a piece of CRAP. Let's start with that.

I wanted a DVD player that could also record.

While this one did just that, it seemed to have a mind of it's own.

I'd only owned the damned thing for 2 months when it started acting up.

e.g. When you insert a DVD disc, what do you expect?

For the TV screen to show the DVD main menu, right?

And when it is on the main menu, and the "PLAY" option is highlighted, meaning, if you press "play" or "OK" on the remote it should play the movie, right?

WRONG!

If you press "OK", it doesn't work.

what happens, a blue blank screen appears on the TV screen.

You have to press "play" only, apparently.

And that was only after a couple months.

And now it's been 9 months and my DVD player/recorder - which by the way, cost me about $170 - is not working.

No "main menu", NOTHING!

Hell, my homie has a regular $45 DVD player that he's had longer than me (and not from GoVideo) and the darn thing is still working!

As far as I'm concerned, this is the last product I'll ever buy from GoVideo!!!!

I wish there was a less than 1 rating!

1 out of 5 stars Cheap product.......2005-11-21

It is true that the unit is inexpensive but the quality of the recording is so poor you may miss your VHS tapes. Also scheduled recording is not working (better buy a tivo and transfer the recordings to your PC and then burn them to DVD form the PC)
The remote is very poor, both in design and efficiency. Cluttered buttons and you really have to be very close to the main unit for the remote to work.
Also the unit doesn't work with most of the DVD brands on the market, you may see what brands are compatible on their website.
The bottomline is,
D O N O T S P E N D M O N E Y O N T H I S U N I T...

1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!!! (no stars, really).......2005-09-24

Although I purchased a different unit, the GoVideo 8440 Portable DVD Player, it played exactly 6 movies before dying. GoVideo replaced it with a refurbished model, which arrived in non-working condition. I received a THIRD replacement unit (new)from GoVideo, which failed within minutes out of the box. Please note that I have since discovered that GoVideo Inc. is NOT a member of the Better Business Bureau of Central/Northern Arizona and has MULTIPLE complaints against the company. Purchase at your own risk!!

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS!!!.......2005-07-12

I bought this product through a company I work for. To say the least I was surprised that they would carry something of such low quality. To put it bluntly, this product is not worth the plastic it took to assemble it. As I write this, we have gone through 2 units already. The first one would not recognize its own discs. The second one locked up and the tray would not open up. If a company has faulty product, that's one thing. This company also has horrible customer service. It took at least 2 weeks of waiting on hold over many phone calls for a least 20 minutes just to talk to a real person so we could get warranty service. After we got the unit returned to GOVideo, we are still waiting 2 weeks later to receive the the replacement. I know when we finally get our 3rd unit that it will probably only last a couple of months before something goes wrong again. I have tried e-mailing which is just as worthless. They send out generic e-mails which have nothing to do with what you e-mailed them about. The bottom line is this company has no interest in customer service and standing behind their products. I would not recommend this product or any other product from this company.

3 out of 5 stars good but die after 6 months.......2005-05-12

I had a good time with it. However, it die after
6 months. And I need to pay $70 to get a replaced one.

2 out of 5 stars You can do better, even for the money.......2004-11-08

Never mind that the thing broke down after 4 months and couldn't even read its own discs, because GoVideo support was nice about it and would have repaired or replaced it (I brought it back to the store for a refund instead). On the plus side? It does (when it was working) what it says it does, and the video is high-quality. The minus side? Huge. A user interface that looks like it was created by apes, for apes. Examples: You're watching a show, you decide you want to record it, so you put in a disc. From the moment you hit the "Open" button, the program you're watching disappears, and is replaced by the GoVideo logo screen, which cheerfully takes about a minute to figure out that you've just put a blank DVD into the machine, and give you back to a screen where you can go back to watching TV. That doesn't sound like a big deal unless it's the World Series you were watching. You can't let the machine record to the end of a disc, because that disc will become unreadable. If, at 11:05, you give it instructions to time-record from 11:00 to 12:00 (because you want to leave the house), it starts up, but records for a completely random period of time, and stops well before 12. My replacement is the LiteOn LVW-5005. Even cheaper than the GoVideo, and while I can't yet swear to its reliability, the software and the general usability is 10 times better. And I can do things like add chapter stops and give titles to my tracks, something the GoVideo interface wouldn't let me do! And I can record to the end of a disc, and leave the house with it recording! All in all, the LiteOn people seem to have expended far more effort in making this machine feel like a VCR replacement, and I think they succeeded. Oh, one more thing: the GoVideo had an annoying 60hz buzz on the audio coming from the RF (Tuner) input. I had to use the A/V input instead to get rid of it.

4 out of 5 stars Nice for the Price.......2004-10-15

I chose between 3 DVDR's and mainly chose this one because I had no DVD Compatibility issues. One of the other recorders had to be unplugged when it licked up reading certain DVDs.

I have not updated the firmware and am content thus far.

Recorded DVD's play fine on any of my players. DVD+R's need to be stopped before they run out of space or htey don't close the session properly, but DVD+RW's you can hit record and let it run til it is out of space...the longest is around 6.5 hours. Most modes will record 10-30 minutes past their 1/2/3/4/6 hour specs.

Not many reviews on this DVDR, and if you read the R6530 reviews it is unsettling. I was going for the name and got lucky with this model...

I wish this price range afforded for Component input and Decoded Dolby 5.1, and had a USB for cameras and storage devices, but for the price I am content. There is a contender out there (probably a *****) that I think would satisfy all the above in the same range, but I'll let you find it. I have it's little brother player (*****) and am quite happy with every aspect of its performance.

3 out of 5 stars Do your homework - compatibility issues.......2004-09-28

I don't actually own this particular model but I do own a GoVideo R6740 DVD recorder. Here's the major thing potential customers interested in getting their first DVD recorder should be aware of (I bought one not knowing the following): the GoVideo units (as well as other lower-cost brands) only record on DVD+R/RW media, as opposed to DVD-R (notice the dash instead of the plus symbol). The DVD+R media will NOT play on any other machine besides the unit it was recorded on, even when finalized. However, the DVD+RW's (rewritables) will play on other machines but the unit is quite fussy about the brand of media you use, as I've had some problems with recording DVD+RW's giving me the "Write Fail" error message. The DVD-R/RW media is much more compatible with other players, so be forewarned. Otherwise, it's a fairly decent unit as a DVD player and as a recorder if you can live with the limitations I've mentioned.

3 out of 5 stars So / So not a very reliable machine, but not very expensive either... ???.......2006-06-14

I got this unit last december from overstock.cm - as a refurbished clearance item - for under 90 bucks.

It worked great for about a month , but then, and now , once it is 'warmed up' after a couple of hours use, it somehow digitizes my s-video input / output , making a very 'jerky' picture. Powering unit off and on again fixes the problem temporarily. Recordings on the timer are iffy and - i think results are almost always quite dependent on the blank media you use, I got very cheap dvd-r's and dvd-rw's from neweggg.cm and both work efficiently.

You get what you pay for in this case.

3 out of 5 stars Does What It's Supposed to Do.......2006-03-14

You have to be practically sitting on top of it for the remote control to work. Also, it's a bit clunky and I'm always having to consult the instructions because I can't remember what button to push when. However the recording is not bad and DVD's made on it can play on other DVD players so I don't regret buying it. I will, however, look at other companies when I decide to upgrade.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Starter for Neo Film SLR users.......2006-06-05

I bought this camera for my neice who is starting college and has plans to be a journalist. She wanted a camera to get started with and one that would fit her needs at school. I looked at the photography classes the college offered and what they expected, so for the price I ended up here. As I am partial to Pentax (none of my bodies or lenses have ever failed me) I looked at other brands before I went back to my old standby. I even bought one myself first (found it on clearance for well under a $100 at a local department store) and tried it out, I was suprised that it functioned so well for appearing so light and like a lot of new Film SLR's cheap. but it did the job and worked with all my lenses, though not all of the functions worked on all the lenses. Some of the older Manual one's didn't even et the metering function work properly. But overall I was pleased with this as a starter camera for someone who has to use a Film SLR but has no experince.

4 out of 5 stars Pentax MZ-60 (non-US version).......2003-02-16

I purchased the MZ-60 model which is simply a renamed ZX-60. This camera, contrary to the previous review, will use manual lenses but only in manual mode. I have used manual focus lenses with no "A" aperture setting with this camera - you can also fake having depth-of-field preview with automatic-aperture lenses by slightly unscrewing the lense and moving to your desired aperture setting. The light metre will still function this way in manual mode.

Firstly my gripes - the viewfinder information is very basic not unlike that of an older manual camera. Exposure is indicated by a plus or minus sign, but there is no shutter speed or aperture figures indicated. These are only shown on the LCD panel, which in dark conditions is difficult to see.

Secondly there is no exposure compensation dial, so if you wish to increase or decrease exposure outside of the meter's suggested setting you'll have to take it into manual mode.

Thirdly there is no cable-release socket BUT this is not a terrible ommision as you can set the shutter to open after 2 seconds AND the very good news is it locks-up the mirror immediately, then waits two seconds before exposing the film.

Metering is two segment, but I am unsure if this is a fancy name for centre-weighted metering. It seems to expose for the darker subject if faced with a contrasting subject & background. No multi-segment metering but it's a very easy metering system to predict!

Be very careful with dust with this unit as a small moth has managed to get up above the focusing screen. It is definately constructed mostly of plastic so don't use this camera as a football as you may not like taking photos with a smashed camera. Admittedly the buttons are a little bit cheap-feeling and it's very easy to switch the camera off without realising it due to it's position - but just remember it's Pentax's budget offering.. just because the buttons may not feel terribly solid doesn't mean you can't produce exactly the same photograph than a more expensive camera (in most 'normal' cases).

For the price I would recommened this camera to anybody who's familiar with using a manual camera but hates not having autofocus. The focusing isn't the fastest around but I'd much rather save a lot of money now than having my camera focus a few 10th's of a second quicker.

3 out of 5 stars Decent camera, but not compatible with manual lenses.......2003-01-31

I purchased this camera to replace an old Pentax ME, but I had to promptly return it, as it is not compatible with older Pentax manual lenses. While it seems to be a quality camera, it will only be useful to you if you have autofocus lenses. Though the price is atractive this will probably not be the best camera for a student for just this reason. In the future I will likely buy the Pentax ZX-5N instead.
