Adding to the receiver's versatility are such sound-enhancing features as Harman International's exclusive Logic 7 processing in both 5.1 and 7.1 versions, which creates a wider, more enveloping field environment and more defined fly-overs and pans; and VMAx, which uses proprietary processing to create an open, spacious sound field even when only two front speakers are available. The receiver's extensive bass management options, meanwhile, include four separate crossover groupings.

Unlike many surround receivers, the AVR 740 is equipped for extensive multiroom use. In addition to offering assignable surround back amplifier channels, the receiver invites the listener to enjoy a separate source in a remote zone. Essentially, this means one family member can watch a movie in the living room while a second family member listens to a CD in the bedroom--both through the AVR 740. The receiver, which is A-Bus/Ready (enables remote component and speaker control), also comes with a Zone II remote control.

Other receiver essentials include high-bandwidth, HDTV-compatible component video switching with assignable inputs, an onscreen menu and display system with the choice of a blue or black background screen, and compatibility with the Bridge, a Harman Kardon device that works with most iPod models. The Bridge lets you operate your iPod from across the room using the AVR 740's remote control, which has been preprogrammed with several iPod control codes. As a result, listeners can select tracks and navigate most iPod functions, charge the unit, or even view track information on the AVR 740's LED display or onscreen menu.

The receiver's variety of audio and video connections include the aforementioned HDMI inputs; three wide-bandwidth, HDTV-compatible component video inputs and one output; four S-video and four composite video inputs (two outputs each); and three analog audio inputs and two outputs. Digital audio options, meanwhile, include three coaxial and three optical audio inputs,. Anyone that's ever suffered from technology overload when setting up his or her audio/video system can rest easy with the AVR 740. The unit's intuitive onscreen menus coordinate with the system's EzSet/EQ function to provide automated system calibration and room equalization, thus greatly simplifying installation. The resulting speaker output compensates for the effects of a room's acoustics to improve the overall system performance. In tandem with EzSet/EQ--which comes with its own microphone--the AVR 740 also includes a full set of manual configuration settings for those who wish to custom-trim their system even further.

Great system, only grip is no TrueHD Dolby from what I can tell. More than enough power, the included remote is ok nothing great. I actually moved that to my living room and use the Harmony 1000 to control the reciever and other equipment.

I bought this refurbished from eBay store of Harman Audio with full 2 year warranty for just $810 shipped. I got the unit that looked and behaved like it is new. Unlike the other reviewer, I actually like the remote. I already had a Harmony H659. I like this one even better. It lights up just by tilting the remote. This one is also a Harmony remote so I could just set it up the same way. I have just HDMI going to the TV and have not had any problems. I just wish it had more than 2 HDMI inputs.

Sound quality wise, this receiver is awesome. It can do Logic 7 from 5.1 channel PCM signals. It has two subwoofer pre-outs. I hope to get a second sub soon! It can do near and far field EQ for all 7 speakers. The display is big and bright (can be dimmed) and readable.

I purchased my Harmon Kardon about 3 months ago and I am honestly amazed. I have owned everything from packaged small home theaters to huge component surround sound systems - I previously owned a Sony 7000ES, which was a serious piece of equipment, this Harmon Kardon however is even better. Its sound is terrific, its video is fabulous, but the control is insane. This reciever does it all, HK has intuitively designed a reciever that will actually simplify your AV usage / while enhancing it!!! The controller supplied with this unit is unmatched and I mean that UNMATCHED. This reciever has the options for the audio/video philes while it retains its ease of use for some that are less techno savy. If you are thinking of purchasing the Harmon Kardon AVR 745 but are unsure if its worth the price, two words, IT IS!!!

Negatives
1 Don't like the remotes at all. An MX700 or such would have been way better in IMHO than these two. Neither of which cuts the mustard on it's own or together. What were they thinking.
2. Ergonomically challenged after setup. Can't change volume on any channel on the fly. Did I mention the remotes?
3. There is a problem when using Component video out with Faroudja processing engaged. The video image is shifted way left and the size of the picture is affected. The picture looks great but has the above mentioned problem. I experienced this using 3 seperate devices. A Dwin CRT and Sony HS51 projectors and a rear projection HDTV. The only other person who has this receiver,that I'm aware of, has the same problem when using a Panasonic Plasma. This should be correctable by Harman but we'll see how long it takes.
4. Oh yeah, did I mention the Remotes.

Positives
1. Picture looks GREAT when using HDMI out with Faroudja processing.
2. Sounds GREAT after running the Auto EQ setup and it was easy to do. I'm using seperate amps for the front speakers.
3. Love Logic7 with music.

Bottom line as I see it.

If you don't need component video out and like to set and forget, this might just be for you. Once and if Component video out is fixed and you get adequate remote [of course that will add to the cost unless you already have one] you and I might be willing to suffer the ergonomic shortcomings.

I don't think anyone who's up on remote control technology will think HK's choice is an intelligent one. I mean AFAIK, they had Harmony design a remote just for this unit and it's cute and has a cool feature in that it lights up when you touch it but it's seriously ergonomically challenged.

Rating would be a 4.5 considering Picture and Sound Quality if the Component out problem didn't exist.

I have not tried the internal amps on my front 3 Quad ESL63 speakers.

It was great until I used it!.......2003-03-25

I've really enjoyed the case until the strap broke. It tore at the padded shoulder part. Luckily someone pointed it out to me before it tore all the way through. Apparently it isn't meant for every day use. I've tried to locate "Motion Systems" or "Icon" to complain but they don't seem to exist.

For 29.99 w/30 rebate and 6 msn bucks then i dont mind getting paid to take these mediocre products. The usb key is by far the best of the items but the other cheaply made products included arent worth paying for. But thats why its nice that they paid me to take it off their hands.

Good student alarm clock, but lacks Smackability.......2006-02-16

As a student who takes frequent naps, this clock could have been fantastic for me. I'd never heard of the idea of a nap timer before seeing this clock. Now I have. And my life will never be the same. I probably get a good 2-3 seconds more napping per rest period because of this clock. I know that doesn't sound like much, but when you nap as much as I do, it adds up.

Also, classes are on different times on different days, so the ability to quickly change the time of the alarm is really important. This clock is relatively speedy. Although there is no button to change hours directly, the inclusion of an "increase" and "decrease" button more than makes up for that. I haven't done extensive testing, but my alarm changes feel fast.

The display is tilted up a little too much for my taste. But that's because I keep it on my desk, which is just above my bed. I haven't had any problems with the viewing angle being especially narrow, though, given the way the LCD is pointed.

The volume is LOUD. I took the advice of one of the other reviews and put some scotch tape over the speaker. This helps a lot, and now the volume is perfectly normal.

I like the fact that the features are minimal. Too many other alarm clocks are cluttered with useless stuff like the temperature and time zone. I know where I am, and I know if I'm cold. If I want temperature and time zone, I'll buy myself a map and a thermometer.

Another feature that's important to me is "smackability." When I wake up in the morning, I want to be able to flail my arm out to the side to smack the snooze button without sending the alarm clock careening onto the floor. This clock has a wide base, so it won't be going anywhere. However, the button on top is pretty stiff. It is made to be pressed, rather than smacked. Thus, my morning flailing has to be a little more controlled than I'd like, which means I have to be a little more awake. That's why I gave this clock 4 stars instead of 5.

disappointed by Timex.......2005-11-01

I've had a very difficult time finding an alarm clock with the bright indiglo light. So I was happy to find this one. However, with my first "Eagle" the alarm didn't go off. Amazon was great about the exchange for a new one (kudos). My repacement is a disappointment in that sometimes the backlight won't light up and I have to hit the clock on the bottom to get the light to go on. I second the others raters who have complained about the bad viewing angle. The loud alarm almost gave me and my wife a heart attack the first morning, but I put a piece of scotch tape over it and that seem to tame it enough.

arrived broken.......2005-09-11

It's still usable for the purpose I bought it for - for waking up a 7 year old for school. But it is disappointing that it arrived broken, the light for seeing the clock at night does not work, and the 'increase time' button for setting the time or alarm does not work, so I always have to set everything from the 'decrease time' button. My mother sent it to me over-seas so it's a real hassle to try to return it, so it will do for now. At least my child has a clock to wake him up for school. In a few years I will order him a better one.

Too loud, difficult to read.......2005-08-25

I love the concept of a nap timer, but when the nap's over look out...you'll be blasted awake. As another reviewer mentioned, the clock is difficult to read at some angles (in particular, from exactly the angle you are at when lying down looking at the clock on the nightstand!). And the snooze is difficult to press.

Features are good and usage is easy.
The problem is display. Numbers on LCD is only visible at a certain angle, otherwise it is blurry and you cannot see.

Display even get worse when you click on light button to see at night. I always need to take it into my hand to bring it to ceratin angle so that i can see. Very poor quality LCD display,
I wish i could return it but I put all packaging into trash. Probably will put it into trash soon, as soon as i find another clock with bright display.
