The Basics

Hard Drive: The massive 160 GB Ultra DMA hard drive (7200 RPM) offers more than enough storage for all your documents, digital photos (approximately 160,000 2-megapixel images) and video (approximately 9 hours of .avi video), and MP3 collection (up to 2,000 CDs).
Processor: The 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (which allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system--see more in Tech Talk section below) is suited for high-performance needs, including intense 3-D gaming, database development, and video editing. It also has a 1 MB L2 cache and 800 MHz front-side buss (FSB).
Memory: The a450n comes with a 512 MB built-in memory (1 x 512 MB DDR SDRAM, 333 MHz)--a good start for power users--with a maximum memory expansion up to 2 GB (4 x 512 MB).
CD/DVD Drive: This desktop PC comes with two optical drives: a combo DVD+RW/CD-RW burner and CD-ROM drive (48x) for playing music and game CDs. For DVDs, it has 4x write, 2.4x rewrite, 8x read speeds; for CDs, it writes at 16x, rewrites at 10x, and reads at 32x. It's compatible with the DVD+RW format, one of two formats for rewriteable DVDs.
Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with an HP Internet keyboard and optical mouse (both with PS/2 connections).

Sound and Graphics
The a450n features the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 video/graphics card with 128 MB of DDR video memory. It's a strong performer for 3-D PC games and offers a TV-out connection, which enables you to view your computer display on your TV, and a DVI connection, which allows output to a flat panel monitor. The integrated sound card uses the AC'97 (Audio Codec '97) standard (configurable to 6 channels of audio).

The a450n comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it also features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). hp450n desktop.......2005-12-24

I bought this back in July 2004 and have found it to be very fast and a great machine. I put a second hard drive in it and a creative audigy card along with ATI AIW 9800 video card and where the card called for a 350 watt or better I put the 350 watts in and really find no fault with this. The software is limited as is on most machines but no problem with that. Others who think the machine is limited in ungradability is wrong. I even added 512 ram making it 1024 ram now.

A good pc.......2005-09-09

Recently purchased the above mentioned hp desktop. It has worked fine for me the processor is fast. It's quiet. It's not incredibly well loaded software wise and your going to want to get viral and spamware protection but all around a good bang for the buck.

Good only w/out upgrades?.......2004-08-15

I bought this computer not too long and noticed that it wasn't bad and that it worked well. Then when I tried to play a pretty high end game (Farcry) it didn't really work other then at the low settings. Seeing that I knew it was the video card that was suspect I bought an ATI 9800 Pro to upgrade it along w/ another 512MB of RAM and that's where it all started to go south as ever since then I've had nothing but problems w/ cooling and such as no matter what kind of upgrades (cooling-wise) I use it will always lock up which can get really irritating after you've had to restart your computer several times because it crashed.
And also since the time I first bought this computer it is not an HP anymore since in all my efforts I've tried to put everything into a larger case in hopes of better air circulation along w/ 5 fans as well and another upgrade too (480 watt power supply) and still has yet to resolve the major issue.
So overall this computer is not bad as long as you're not trying to run any high end games on it or upgrade very much at all, but in the end when a computer is incapable of achieving what at least should be achievable you may realize that perhaps it was not the wisest choice when it came to purchasing a comp.

I bought two of these at one time.......2004-05-25

First off, technically they are awesome. Quiet (VERY QUIET), correctly configured so that they fell into my home LAN seemlessly at #4 and #5. The ports are easily used, and the case/port design is excellent. It will hook up, and configure well for you if your like me.

Only Problems : Too much shovelware. Almost all the software on this box is pay now to get, instead of owning it yourself now. If youwant to enable everything it will cost you hundreds of dollars more, and they made it a pain to uninstall some of it.

If you just want the box, good. It's suited for that. If you wanted alot of functioning software, get your credit card out, you will be entering it alot. It suits MY needs great, but may not suit everyones needs if you want alot of pre-bundled software.

So far, it's done what I asked.......2004-05-24

I've had this computer for about twenty-seven months now and, after an initially flurry of non-hardware problems (i.e., viruses), I have had no further problems.

My usage is restricted to: browsing online (including buying, selling, and reviewing), word processing, using spreadsheets, making greeting cards, and occasionally watching videoes. All of these things have worked well for me on this computer.

While it does take up quite a bit of space, especially in combination with my hp deskjet 6122 printer and hp pavillion f1703 monitor with accompanying harman/kardon speakers, I really have no other beefs. The tower unit is very quiet and has been problem-free, from a hardware point of view. The silver-gray color combinations are aesthetically pleasing while not being obtrusive.

When I bought the unit, I upgraded the RAM from 512 MB to 2 GB, and processing speed, delays, etcetera, have never been bothersome.
