Unit wooks well for basic backup. To use the print on the disc feature you have to purchase the appropriate coated discs.
HP-DVD 940i Internal lightscribe.......2007-09-17
Easy to install and mechanically reliable and very fast - burned 217 2-4 MB jpegs in about 3 minutes. However,the Nero DVD Burning software proved to be a bit fussy and so far only seems to work from the System Admin account in Windows XP Pro (although that could be a Windows issue). The Lightscribe function is somewhat slow in best quality mode and took 14 minutes to burn a photo image although the finished results were pretty good.
Overall good value and I would buy it again because when you buy HP you are buying good, fast, reliable mechanics and you learn to deal with the software wrinkles as a secondary issue.
Problems with commercial DVD (this is a lite on drive HP label).......2007-08-29
I have used this burner for a few months now and just recently it started having problems with reading commercial dvds. It wouldn't even recognize the dvd and locked my system up. After a lengthy internet search I figured out (not on HPs web site) that I had to change the firmware to LiteOn LH-18A1H which the drive seems to actually be with a HP label. Download a couple of programs and flash the drive and it was back up running again, but it now reads as a LiteOn drive. Maybe I should have bought a LineOn drive in the first place. This seems to be a problem a lot of people are having with this drive, so beware, although it hasn't completely stopped just yet. (I will amend my rating later if it does).

This is a great product with the best price found. We have enjoyed using the laser print on DVD's and CD's. We think this will make nice gifts when putting on family pictures or vacation pictures.

Can't get the contrast or printing right. Manual/help is not user friendly. I'm afraid to call hp, they'll probably charge me an arm for tech support. I suppose will be worth it once I get it worked out, need a lightscribe for dummies book.

I have this drive with my HP media center a1230n, it does not work properly, plays DVD with stutters, installs games on DVD EXTREMELY slow.
Called HP support, requested a replacement, I was put through a ton of system recovery, the drive worked for a while, now back to the same old thing, a lot of time wasted restalling all the software.
I have 2 Compaq computer with faulty DVD writers also, those were replaced and worked fine afterwards.

This is my 4th drive. Started with BenQ and gave up after being sent wrong drive and customer support fed me a bunch of BS. Went with HP thinking a more reputable brand will have better product, better customer service. Am giving up on LightScribe. Every forum I have read reveals the same or nearly the same problems over and over and over. Can't believe the product is still being allowed to be marketed. Perhaps the little line about LightScribe being a new technology is their disclaimer, but it's been on market for some time now. Just awful. I am not happy with having to give it one star either. It should receive non.
HP dvd740i Internal 16X DVD Writer with LightScribe Technology.......2006-12-11
I have had nothing but trouble with this drive and its recent replacement. What a piece of junk and lousy customer service. The first one would not read DVD's. The replacement will not write CD's.
The customer service has been a night mare. I was ignored and dropped on email support. The RMA was screwed up. The replacement drive was sent to the wrong person and wrong address.
Where is the zero or negative rating option for this product?
I won't make the same mistake with HP again!

i had about a month and a half of trouble free operation, and after that it all went south.
at first i could not understand why this burner would not "see" any type of disc i put into it. i tried the update at at litescribe, i searched the hp site and nothing. i tried every type of cd medium and nothing. i have thrown countless cd's against the wall searching for an answer. i believed it was some type of software problem. i never would have thought that the good people at HP would knowingly put out a defective product. then i read the other reviews and they described my exact problems. 1 out of a hundred may have luck with this device, and to this person i say enjoy, i hope it lasts forever. but, the other 99 of us know the bitter taste of frustration when we go to save something and this burner spits out the "unknown" disc.
i will NEVER buy another HP dvd burner....

Not For Clumsey People.......2004-11-26
i recieved this player for cristmas about 5 ago it is a great play and it also recharges rechargeable batteries which was a function i liked. BUT it isnt for clumsey people. after dropping it 3 times on a hardwood floor the head phone jack became broke and would only play out of one head phone and after ruling out my headphones i gave it away and replaced it with a cheap($10-$15) lenoxx sound CD player which i must say IS for the more clumsey type. ive had it for 4 years and just recently the phone jack has gone bad. but unfortunately i cannot find anymore of this brand. so if you are carefyul and not clumsey this player is great. especially if you have sensitive ears, becouse it didnt play quite loud enough for me. over all it was a decent player
Awsome CD Player.......2002-11-06
I've had this CD player for 3 years and it's great. Very good size, goods looks especially the blue color. In all the time I've had it it has never skipped. Very good sound. The car kit worked but I never needed it with a CD player already in the car. So the car kit isn't an essential component for me. The only thing I don't like is that the ear phones sometimes pull my hair but they have very good sound. I replaced them with some other ones that go on my ears. Overall it is the bomb! You should get it.
All You Need and then Some.......2002-01-01
Unless you want an AM/FM tuner or MP3 capabilities, this is as goo as it gets. The 40 (I thought it was 45) second skip protection is perfect. It is perfect for jogging, since the anti-skip actually seems to rid it of skipping at all. The car kit allows you to hook your CD player to you cars audio system via casette rack, enabling you to save on the new car you may be buying. Also includes car power adaptor.
How do I love Phil? Let me count the ways . . ........2001-11-20
'Tis true. I absolutely adore my tiny blue Philips AZ910317 Personal CD Player. I, oh so creatively, decided to name mine Philip. Philip has managed to provide me with musical pleasure every day for almost a year now. In fact, it's getting harder and harder to imagine a life without Philip. But we all know that nothing in this world is perfect. And even my darling Phil has its faults. So, which would you like to know first- the good news or the bad news? . . . what's that you say?? WHAT? I can't HEAR you!! Perhaps my headphones are on too loud. Oh well, I'll flip a coin. . .
The Bad: The headphones good ol' Phil came with just aren't my cup of tea. They're uncomfortable. And they muffle the music. That problem wasn't hard to fix, though. I just bought some those headphones that slide into your ears. Those made me very happy. Another slight problem is the location of the batteries. You actually have to remove the CD from the discMan to switch the batteries. BUT you won't have to switch those batteries too often, so it's not really that big of a problem. I think the thing that bothers me the most about Phil is the display's lack of light. It was quite difficult to find the right buttons to push when it's dark and there's no light -- but that's easy to get used to. Now I'm an expert.
The Good: The reason I love Phil so much is because Phil treats me real good. Phil makes me happy. Phil knows what it is: a simple discMan. It's not trying too hard to be something it's not, and doesn't have to. That's a quality I look for in a discMan. Phil doesn't skip at all when I go jogging. That makes me happy. Phil's tiny and cute and blue, not big and bulky and boring. That also makes me happy. And Phil's ability to last on long trips never ceases to amaze me. Phil doesn't suck the life out of batteries like SOME discmen I know. As my friends are begging people for spare batteries, I give Phil a proud smile. And when there are no more spare batteries and they are unable to listen to their discmen, I silently whisper to MY discMan, "You are the best" . . . 'Cause Phil is.
Just bought this today!!.......2001-01-29
I just bought this CD Player today because I saw one here on Amazon but it hadn't been in stock for a while(I get home today to find out it just became avaliable-Murphey's Law) and I'm impatient so I figured I go ahead and buy the one I saw. This CD player is excellent so far-no problems. Right now I'm listening to a classical CD and it has excellent volume and no skips, even when I drop it against something. The cool blue color(that's what it's titled on the box) makes it chic and different from other CD players. I haven't had a chance to try out the car adapter kit or AC adapter but I have a feeling they will work. I great product!! I was actually looking for the AZ1901 but this one comes with the car kit. A much better deal!!
