No longevity.......2007-01-22

I've had this particular burner/video capture device since March 2005. About a week or so ago, the device started making a really loud fan noise even while the computer was off and it wasn't doing anything itself. I've tried unplugging it and replugging but there is a persistent noise coming from the device. Also, during this time the burner has decided that it occasionally will fail a DVD burn in midstream resulting in DVDs for the garbage. I don't know what's been going on lately with HP but they seem to be severely lacking in support and product quality. I'm in the market for a new system but won't be considering HP if I can help it.

Glitch Found and Fixed!!! Works great again!.......2006-02-11

For the past year I have been happily burning movies and mulitple smaller mpegs onto DVD, making neat little chapters with music and animated thumbnails, with aboslutely no problems. I've loved it (even though the menu setup in Showbiz is a little limited) and became quite addicted. I have a HP computer with Windows XP, so no compatability issues.
The, ONE month after the year warranty expired, all systems crashed. Suddenly, after the disc was burned I tested it on the DVD player, all the chapters looked intact, but when I hit on a later chapter it started at the movie beginning instead of chapter point, or on multiple MPEGS, 3 or 4 out of 5 would be fine, but the first one would be partial. It would totally vary as to what point it cut off, after re-starting and joggling and re-burning.
Then to my horror, I discovered that when I tried to capture the sound would blink out after a few minutes and it would transfer the rest with no sound I'm like 'Great. They boboy-trapped it to stop after 1 year! Evil corporations".
I emailed HP support a few times, and although they are VERY speedy responding, they didn't know what was up.
After alot of searching on the internet to find someone with my problem, I found this awesome FAQ site that answered it:

I had suspected that when I upgraded my Norton Anti-Virus it might have changed something, because of the timeline, and I was right.
The whole ordeal was just simply that Norton kept starting up Windows Messanger (msmsgs.exe), which I had already previously painstakingly disabled in Explorer & Outlook Express.
That little tiny process messed up my WHOLE Showbiz DVD program.
I went to Norton options, unchecked the Windows Messanger box, and have had no problems since. Works like a dream (you can also do Control/Alt/Delete and shut it down from there if it comes back).
To other people having problems, I urge you to check out the small or uneeded programs running which might cause a problem. It might be something incredibly simple, that it shouldn't logically be at all.

Great product, but you MUST meet the system requirments........2005-07-14

I was a little anxious about purchasing this item after reading the negative reviews, afterall this is a $200 dollar purchase. After a lot of researching, I decided to buy the product. At first, my computer didn't recgonize the hardware, and just turned off randomly, but after I inserted the included setup CD everything was fine. To copy a home movie, you can just touch a button on the unit, or click an icon on the desktop. You then have the option to use HP's quick transfer wizard, which lets you choose a theme, title, date, and print a CD/DVD cover, and then burns the movie to a DVD, all extremly fast. You also have the option to use 4 different pieces of software that are included to capture/edit your video. One allows you to combine two pieces of video, one allows you to add commentary to the home videos, one gives you funcationality similar to the quick transfer wizard (with a few extra features), and one allows you to edit the video in any way, then make chapters, create DVD menus, and burn. No matter which software you are using, it is all extremly easy to use, and there is GREAT help documentation. If you do have a problem, you can simply email HP, and they always respond in less than 45 minutes, the fastest support of ANY company, by far. Of course, anything you read will always tell you that doing anything with video is extremly computer intensive. You MUST ensure that you meet the minimum requirments, or your computer WILL freeze up during the process. Even if you have a high end computer, all other functions will be very slow while working with video, so I recommend creating your DVD's sometime when you won't need to quickly access the internet, or other programs. This slowness/freezing is NOT HP's fault, it is just the result of working with video, it will happen with ANY brand, no matter how expensive. This is why other people have unfairly rated the product low. If you are looking to transfer your home movies to DVD, or are just looking for a great external DVD burner, this is THE product for you. It even supports dual-layer burning. (if you don't know what that is, it is just a process that allows you to burn double the data onto a DVD by creating two layers, instead of one)

It looked great at first... but then the problems came..........2005-05-29

I succeeded to transfer 2 home videos without any problem with the DC5000, but then I ran into serious problems on the sound transfer. Mostly no sound is transferred, sometimes cracky, sometimes just OK, but not predictable when it will go wrong. Changed every cable I used more than once, re-installed software etc... Seems a problem in the USB-transfer has come up which was not there at the start. Waiting for answer from the HP-guys....

All in all a frustrating experience.

Frustrating experience.......2005-04-24

I purchased this DVD writer with the plan of converting all my Mini DV movies to DVD format. The install went through successfully and at first try. I connected my camcorder to this to download the movie and it seemed to be running fine till about 15 minutes into the process when it abruptly exited. I tried restarting the download but could not get it to start, the DVD would auto eject when I tried this. I rebooted my machine and tried again, this time is it exited the download in about 2 minutes. I tried reinstalling the software and at this time it crashed my XP. Since the machine I was using had a lot of other software on it I thought this to be an incompatibility issue and installed this on a machine which only had XP with its latest patches. Different variations of failures occured and finally my XP crashed on this machine too. I even tried a firmware upgrade to no avail.
I bought this on a recommendation from a coworker for whom this seemed to work very well but my experience with it has been a 2 weekends of frustration. I finally returned the product to Amazon.

Static after owning for one year.......2007-07-20

This phone worked well for one year. Then I moved and kept it in storage for a few months. When I tried using it again, the phone was so staticky that most of the time I couldn't hear anyone, nor could the person on the other line hear me. Changing the channels didn't help at all. I basically don't even use it anymore because--even for 1-800 calls, I'd rather use my cell phone minutes than deal with the headache of listening to the static and yelling over the static and repeating myself.

If you want to waste your money..........2004-07-12

...send it to me rather than buying a phone made by Uniden. I bought this phone and it never worked. This phone's range in my home was completely limited to the room where the base was situated, and the reception was horrible even while standing next to the base. It's not even like it was a little bit of fuzz or static on the line, it would cut out completely and explode into this wild and disturbing noise (similar to the noise you hear when you dial a fax number on your phone...horrible), and the sound is even worse on the other end of the line as I learned after calling home to my wife. We bought a 5.8 GHz by Uniden to replace this one, thinking that maybe we need a more powerful phone, but we had the exact same results...extremely limited range and horrible clarity. We have since purchased a digital cordless phone/answering system by V-Tech and have had ZERO PROBLEMS. I'm not trying to say that V-Tech makes the best phones because I'm sure that there are many other quality brands, but from my very recent experience, Uniden phones are garbage. I encourage you to buy a different brand of phone so that you can avoid the trips back and forth to your electronics store returning terrible, worthless phones made by Uniden. I wish I could give this phone 0 stars.

Clear calls and no static.......2004-01-03

I have found this phone to be near perfect. The quality reception is the best I've had. I live in a 2 story home and have clear reception from the basement to the 2nd floor. The digital answering feature has worked well.

My only complaint would be the lack of a speaker phone. Like most cordless phones, there will be a time when the handset is not around and the phone is ringing. Without a speaker phone at the base you cannot answer the phone and must find the handset. Since there is a speaker and a mic at the base I imagine it would be easy to do if Uniden wanted to add this feature to future phones.

Overall I am very pleased with the quality I have seen so far...good luck with your phone!

Excellent deal.......2003-12-19

As many revewiers have stated before, you'd be hard pressed to find a better deal. The quality is outstanding, and with this price--it's a must. Don't pay attention to any complaints about interference--it has nothing to do with the phone's quality. With any wireless device there's always a chance it will pick up some noise, but all you have to do is switch it to a different channel (which is not difficult at all, unless you're completely technologically challenged). Oh, and Caller ID *does* work when connected through a modem. All in all, it's sleek, it's inexpensive, and, most of all, it's reliable. Get one.

This phone is horrible.......2003-10-17

Returnedthis phone a day after receiveng it. this unit has too much interference. as soon as you are a few feet away from the base unit you can not hear a thing. or best case if you do hear something it's mixed with various noises.
this is my second Uniden phone and my last.
