This unit is great. Have had it for over a year now and it is flawless in operation. Hope they keep making it or a better updated version as time goes on. Upgraded to Windows Mob. 5 and it work fine as well. TON of memory and takes CF and SD cards. I have 1 gig ultrs in it now. Holds a TON of pictures and maps for pocketstreets, which I use often. I put a GPS card in it and and I have Navigation ability with Pocket-Streets... and yes holds and plays video and music with mob. MSplayer 10

What I like about my hx4705.......2006-10-07

This is my fourth Windows PDA, first 3 were from Compaq.
Let me add some beneficial features which have not been mentioned:
a. It is one of two Hp iPaqs which will run Windows mobile 5.0. I found that Windows Mobile 5.0 makes wireless internet access easier and faster.
b. Be sure to use Active Sync v 4.2. Syncing is very quick over USB 2.0.
c. This device runs .Net compact framework 2.0. I build apps for it using Visual Studio 2003 & 2005.
d. I use the onboard excel app constantly and move spreadsheets between it and my PC. Running Excel natively is a huge feature for me.
e. Windows mobile 5.0 includes a media player which sounds better than the previous one. This PDA is a great digital media player.
f. I read PDF manuals using a pcoket Acrobat reader. The beautiful screen is very useful for this.
g. Pocket Streets & downloadable maps. Buy Microsoft Streets & trips and get this for free. Map display is more vivid and colorful with this release.
Summary:
This device has enormous potential which it should, given its high price.

I've had one for 9 months and it's a great PDA, albeit a bit power hungry for the battery shipped. Love the screen.

But it's fragile, and when mine broke HP claimed I'd opened the case voiding the warranty (i hadn't ?!?), and wanted 270 bucks.

I don't know anyone who still has one. Shame, it was a great PDA. I've heard they're discontinued now. But you can't spend this kind of money for something that won't even make it a year.

Potential not realized.......2006-06-08

I have had my iPAQ for almost a year and bought it because of positive reviews and the high quality of its screen. I was just told by an "HP repair status specialist" that the motherboard must be replaced and there is no power to the motherboard. I only ever used it to read e-books, run a program called ePocrates - a medication database, play solitaire, and keep up with addresses and phone numbers. I could never get the wireless capability to work. It was reliable for my limited use for about six months and then began it's slow decline. I have updated it, kept "patches" current, and spent about 5 hours of my time with various online and telephone support personnel. I really miss my old Clie. My Dell Axim is also better than the HP.

HP needs to reintroduce this model.......2006-05-24

For some marketing reason, HP has officially discontinued this model. And won't promise to reintroduce it,-I asked. I must have bought one of the last new ones available directly from business purchase from the company. I am pleased with the unit to the small extent I have been able to exploit its functions,and it has a lot. What I immediately liked are these: A brilliant VGA quality screen. Multiple function in communication, Wi Fi and Bluetooth and infrared too. The Wi Fi works well with the included Internet Explorer. Not the latest Microsoft operating system for Pocket PCs,but that may be a plus... I am in no hurry to convert from the Win CE 2003 Second Edition,for which applications abound, to the recent upgrade, Mobile 5.0, until that has been field tested. The on board administrative calendar and imaging applications that come with the unit are very nice. Loaded a bunch of photos and have a portable show and tell file. (It is desriable for uploading when one puts the full MS Office on the PC.) Synchronization is speedy. The operating manual,167 pages, comes on CD-ROM, and still leaves out a bunch of stuff out that will have you seeking "IPAQ for Dummies," or seeking user groups. I bought a thumb keyboard from HP and it works OK for on the go note taking. Carry cases for this model are no longer easy to find in retail stores,online is about it. The one to buy is made by Bellagio. It has a slot that allows the case to sit in the cradle for recharging.

Verdict: A good PDA at its original price. (I am doubtful I would pay much more than that without looking at what Dell has to offer in its Axim line. Or even checking out the phone equipped units that seem to have been released from HP.)

After a year, I still find new capabilities for my 4700. I still use the 2003SE operating system,but have no problem with it,nor the onboard PIM programs. (From what I have read, the Compact Edition 2003 SE version can be considered to be essentially Mobile 4.0 and we are now up to Mobile 6.0., the new nomenclature. Since devices are made to link with OS's,I am not sure what the advantages of upgrading would be--got to get the gumption to find out someday.) Connectivity works fine. Pocket Informant seems interesting,however I think it may be too much density for a small screen. Like an onion, I seem to peel back more and more layers on this HP unit. The Image Zone with a 1 GIG card is like a full photo album.
Kind of sorry the devices are now with phones,because I think we can "converge' too much and overdue the density of these things. My take on handhelds,anyway. GS

Have had no problems.......2006-05-13

I got this for Christmas two years ago and haven't had any issues. I'm amazed at what I read below. Could it be carelessness on the part of the users? I wish the battery would last longer for really long plane flights. That is my only complaint. But I believe you can buy an extended battery for it.

Very disappointed, poor quality.......2006-05-13

I bought this unit because of the great features and the Polariod name...well, I have learned my lesson. I watched one movie on it on the way to the airport. Once we got on the plane and I turned it on, the screen lit up, but the disc would not spin. Checked the unit when I got home, the battery was fully charged and the player still wouldn't work plugged into direct power...I will be returning this and buying a new one, and not a Polariod.

What a piece of...........2006-01-29

Have been using this unit for only a month now (since xmas, its January 28th now). On our very first trip with it, the main reason it was bought, the backlight went out on the screen. You can only barely see it when directly in the sun. What gets me now is after reading the poor reviews on this item that so many other people are having problems with it, when this afternoon I was on the phone with the people from Polaroid and they said they never have problems with these dvd players. To think, I thought i would pay the extra ammount for a namebrand I was familiar with.

Yikes, what a mess!.......2005-10-12

I had all but given up hope for the piece of junk that Polaroid made when I came across my original receipt. I paid $337.23 for this DVD player on Christmas Eve almost 2 years ago. The plastic clasp that keeps the lid closed broke almost immediately. Then the swivel mechanism broke. It no longer stands up perpendicular to the base. It just lays down flat. Nearly impossible to watch a movie that way. Which is just as well because soon after the input where the power cord goes broke. It played for awhile if you got it in just the right position and didn't touch it at all. Not very good for viewing in the moving car. Now you can barely get a movie started and it shorts out. I knew full well that it was out of warranty but wanted to call Polaroid to tell them that I was disappointed that a product that costs over $300 only lasted less than a year. They said what they would do is send me a replacement for $135. This replacement, and actually any new Polaroid DVD player that you buy only has a 90 day warranty. So now I am trying to decide if it is a really great bargain for me to send them $135 for another poor quality player. Or should I put that money towards another brand?

Looks great when it works - which isn't often.......2005-09-07

Bought one of these puppies for a car trip - very nice screen in the store, nice feature set, reasonable price. Weird controls - volume is via a wheel on the main unit; can't be adjusted using the remote control. Worked great for the first few hours, and then the screen went haywire - everything (including setup screens) gets awful ghost images, all of the colors except yellow disappeared, etc. Tried checking all the setup screens, and reset everything to factory defaults, but it appears to be a hardware failure. Very disappointing to the kids, and to the drivers when it didn't act as a pacifier...

The price was reasonable compared to other products in this space, but the quality was awful.
