VERY POOR QUALITY CASES! DO NOT BUY!.......2005-12-29

I bought several of these 10 packs. After opining one pack some of the cases just fell apart, others were cracked. Out of ten only one didn't break after being opened. The plasic is extremely thin and very flimsy and breaks as soon as you opened them.

Do not buy these, look for more quality cases. The quality of these is unexeptable.

Great in v.90 with Windows XP drivers.......2006-06-25

When my old Aceex ISA hardware-controlled modem started malfunctioning a few years ago, I bought the USR 5610B to replace it. It is still working great.
I'm not sure why my experience is so much better than some other reviewers. It could be that I never used the CD. Windows XP booted up, assigned it to COM 3, and it just works. Maybe there are fancy features that the Windows-bundled driver won't provide, but since my dialup number is just v.90 anyway, I've left well enough alone. Connections of 49.2kbps or 48kpbs are common, which is good for my telephone line.
I also had SuSE 8.2 in my old computer. The USR PCI modem was more tricky to configure than the old ISA modem. I had to run YAST twice to get it to create a ttyS4 (equivalent to Windows COM3), but then after another try it recognized the modem. Once configured, it has been reliable.

When I bought a new computer I figured I should have a new modem. I tried the Creative Modem Blaster serial external. After a few days I salvaged the USR 5610B from my old computer and put it in the new one. Once again, it's great on v.90 with the Windows XP Home SP2 drivers. I haven't had time to put in a new linux distro yet.

Edit: Now I have done some linux experiments.

SUSE 10.1: The installation could not autodetect the modem. I could get a good connection logged in as root, with modem manually set to ttyS1. As a user it took some command line tinkering to get permission to use the modem, but then it worked. I regard that as a deficiency in SUSE 10.1 to make user jump through such hoops to access a modem.

MEPIS 6 Beta3: Works fine with KPPP set to ttyS4. This distro has some other problems, but compatibility with this modem is not one of them.

Ubuntu Dapper Drake: Did not work with this modem. All settings were tried, and ttyS4 was not an available setting. Some linux enthusiasts would say that the hardware failed the distro. My opinion is that the distro failed hardware that has proven itself in other distros.

I won't remove a star because of the failure of some distros to work with this modem, but if you are in love with those distros, this is not the modem for you.

Important to know: Some new distros set modem speed by default to 921,600 bps. That setting will actually slow a 56K modem to 9600 bps. To get good results you should manually select 115,200 or 57,600 bps.

Horrible modem for XP.......2004-11-26

This modem connects well, I have no complaints with connections, it's the call waiting feature. That feature fails in XP for me and the tech support is ridiculous. To make this feature sort of work, it needs a string, but US Robotics tech support doesn't seem to know that. I had that feature working for over a year and then with I upgraded their Call Notification, it failed completely and I can't make that feature work at all anymore. I gave this modem 1 star because the only reason I purchased it was for the on hold feature.

I Like this modem.......2004-04-14

It seems this modem needs some encouragement from a satisifed user; and that would be me. I've used this modem for over a year now, and am very satisifed. When I first installed, it always wanted to connect at 52-52kpbs. However, that speed almost always ended in a dropped connection due to a line error. I configured the modem settings (in XP) to only connect at 48kbps. At this speed, I never, ever get dropped calls, and the stability is wonderful on V.92.

Download the latest drivers and software, and make sure you get the latest firmware. the CD installs a program that will update the firmware for you automatically. The modem-on-hold was a pain to get working, but the firmware update seem to ease this problem. MOH works perfectly.

If you are looking for a stable, reliable modem that works with Windows (and Linus and DOS), this is one to get. The more technically inclined folks will be able to tweak the modem for the best performance.

Undoubtedly, this is the best modem available. I've used this modem for over a year now, and couldn't be more pleased. Disconnects are rarely ever experienced, and if it does occur, it is probably the ISP's fault. For those having disconnect problems, try lowering your connect speed. My USR wanted to connect at 53kbps, which caused disconnects. I lowered the connect rate to 48kbps which eliminated the problem and gave me a faster connection than the 53kbps (due to the line errors). To do this, you have to place a command in the modem initialization string which is on the Advanced Tab in the modem setup properties (Windows XP, look in control panel for modem options). For this modem, the commands for connecting at a specific rate are

44kbps: AT&N29
45.3kbps: AT&N30
46.7kbps: AT&N31
48kbps: AT&N32
49.3kbps: AT&N33
50.7kbps: AT&N34
Other speeds: See the manual on the setup disk or USR's website.

Depending on the quality of your telephone line, you may need to connect at something lower than 48kpbs. If you have a bad line coming to your house, no available consumer modem is going to make it better. It may say it connects at 56kpbs+, but line errors degrade this speed tremendously. More is not always better.

waste of money.......2004-04-13

Worst thing Ive done to my computer yet (Windows Xp). In fact after 5 hours of trying to get it to work right. I threw it away and put my old modem back in.
when I finally did get the new usr pro in, the drivers were old, nothing would recognize the modem including usr software that came with the modem, Ctl, alt, delete, quit working so when it froze up and, it did a lot (thats never happened before or since putting the old modem back in),I had to unplug the computer. Then when I did get it started again nothing but a blank monitor. Once again with the power cord. took out the USR modem, got the system up and running restored to the day before, shut off the computer the right way, installed my old modem and everything is now working correctly and normal.
I will never buy another USR product.

I also had trouble with the call-waiting feature. Sometimes it would alert me to a call, sometimes it wouldn't. When it did, it did not let me "drop" my internet.
Support from USR was very poor. First, there is no toll-free phone number, so you have to call long-distance. In today's age of customer service, this is very poor. Less than emphathetic reps are on the line, and use the script. "Try this and call back if it doesn't work."
Plus their web-site does not have an updated driver for this modem. The one on the installation disk is from 8/2001. Then they say to update the v.92 software, but an update is not available either. Support is non-existent.
Very disappointed. Will try a competitor.
