The Basics Similar in most respects to HP's awesome top-of-the-line Media Center m1090n Photosmart PC but with slightly downgraded data and graphics processing and less memory, the HP Media Center m1080n Photosmart PC is nevertheless an excellent desktop computer that's adorned with high-end components and will make quick work of most any task or application you can dream up. Featuring such lavish amenities as a humungous 250 GB hard drive, solid out-of-the-box 3D graphic support, a potent Altec Lansing amplified speaker system and a powerful new version of Intel's Pentium 4 processor, the m1080n is a capable machine best suited to those who need high-end computing but can't financially justify absolute state-of-the-art.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. For the Media Center m1080n, HP has turned to Intel and its new Pentium 4 540 CPU. This is an upgraded version (nicknamed "Prescott") of the venerable Pentium 4 chip, featuring one full MB of Level 2 cache and a more generous data "pipeline" than prior models. Operating at a blazing 3.4 GHz and of course sporting Intel's Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave at times as a dual CPU system, thus adding substantially more speed to some high-end applications), this is a very fast CPU and a strong centerpiece to a top-level system. However, it follows the tried and true 32-bit CPU architecture of previous Pentiums rather than the substantially faster 64-bit architecture just being introduced in today's priciest, most advanced processors.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Media Center m1080n features 512 GB of fast PC3200 DDR SDRAM main memory. This is an average allotment for a computer of this caliber, but its rated speed is comparatively quick. As such, it is more than enough for most multitasking situations and complex applications. Moreover, the system is constructed to support RAM upgrades to a stunning total of 4 GB.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). The Media Center m1080n features one of today's finest graphics cards, an ATI Radeon X300 SE PCI-E with 128 dedicated MB of video memory. A video card with dedicated memory is far preferable to cards that share the system's memory, and this card is capable of accurately displaying virtually any 2D application and delivering smooth frame rates and immersive, lifelike visuals to the 3D animations found in most computer games and 3D animation packages. Serious gamers who demand perfect frame rates at extremely high resolutions may want to upgrade to a 256 MB video card, such as the Radeon X600 PRO PCI-E found in HP's Media Center m1090n.

Display:
HP has not included a display screen, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.

Sound
The Media Center m1080n produces sound via an Intel High Definition Audio chipset with support for seven distinct audio channels and one subwoofer. If eight separate speakers seems like a bit much, you can certainly make do with the enclosed Altec Lansing 2121 speaker system. This is a two-satellite, one-subwoofer setup that's far more powerful and accurate than the typical two-piece entry-level multimedia speakers accompanying many of today's computer systems.

Hard Drive
At 250 GB, the internal hard drive is one of the most spacious in any desktop PC, offering enough room for a massive allotment of files and applications and ample music, video/photo and multimedia libraries too. Further storage possibilities are offered in the form of the convenient HP Personal Media Drive, a docking slot located on the front of the computer tower that accepts portable hard drives.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the same big budget DVD movies you watch on your home entertainment system. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD).

This system features two optical drives -- a DVD-ROM drive for playing music and data CDs and DVD movies, and a DVD+R/RW drive through which you can burn music and data CDs, play DVD movies, and record home videos to long-lasting DVD media. Moreover, the unit's two drives allow you to make extremely quick copies of any CD or DVD.

Connectivity and Expansion
With no less than six high-speed USB 2.0 ports -- two of which are conveniently located on the front of the unit -- you'll have plenty of room for plug and play gadgets such as digital cameras and printers. HP has also included two IEEE 1394 "FireWire" ports (commonly used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders) and a versatile 9-in-1 card reader for reading memory cards from devices such as digital cameras, PDAs and more. Communication options include an integrated 10/100Base-T networking interface for fast Internet and network communication and a V.92 data/fax modem for low-speed dial-up connections. The system's single open PCI slot may be used for add-on audio cards, video cards, and the like.

Operating System and Software
The Media Center m1080n features an extremely comprehensive software package headed by Microsoft's beefy Windows XP Media Center Edition operating system. HP will also pre-install the Microsoft Money Standard 2004, Microsoft's Works 7.0 productivity suite, HP Image Zone Plus photo and imaging software, and an impressive assortment of multimedia utilities. Last but certainly not least is HP's own Personal Video Recorder for recording and archiving up to 200 hours of video from sources such as cable and satellite TV.

Control
To help free your workspace of cumbersome cables, HP will provide a convenient wireless keyboard and wireless mouse combo. To help you relax when you're watching movies, playing games or listening to music, the system also features a handy wireless infrared remote control.

Great PC , but. . ........2005-02-25

This is an Awsome PC. It just about does it all, you can play some of todays best games like Doom3 without problems. You can run multiple programs at onece without a glitch, with its Hyper Threading technolgy. It comes with some pretty good features like a pci tuner card with remote and a decent 128mb pci express video graphics card. You can also record and pause live TV with its nice pre-installed software. BUT... the issues with this PC are; (1) it does not come pre-installed with (service pack 2) so your going to have to go to HP.com and download all available harware updates. Then (2) your going to need to go to microsoft.com and download any service pack 2 related updates for you PC. Finally (3) you install the actual service pack 2 CD, wich is pretty cool because when you do this, you not only get all of the security features and benefits of service pack 2, but this actually upgrades you current Windows XP Media Center 2004 Edition operating system to the 2005 Edition... Other then these couple of necesary steps, this is one Awsome PC.
I would also recomend upgrading the PCI Express card, although there nothing wrong with the one already installed.
I personally upgraded mine to a 256mb ATI Radeon card and the graphics are simply phenomenal now...
I also recomend installing an aditional 512mb of PC memory. 1 gig of memory should be just perfect for this system!

Clever, huge wow-factor, but expect setup issues.......2005-03-13

Just got the iPronto and it's "kewl" factor is beyond anything the marketing materials can describe. It is solid, the touchscreen is excellent in its colors and resolution, the form factor does not feel awkward in the hands, and the electronics are amazing in the breadth of what you can do. It mimics very high-end remotes costing several times this price, and does it well...once you have it set up, and there's the rub.

The iPronto must be connected to a wireless network. Surprisingly and to Philips great credit, I was able to connect to my home encrypted wireless network first try, and reliably. Excellent instructions and it worked. From there it went downhill. Unless you have all Philips equipment (does anyone?), you will have to program the iPronto to recognize and send the infrared codes of your equipment. Unlike most universal remotes, it is not just a matter of selecting a codeset from a table of manufacturer's names. You have to load a separate application called ProntoEdit onto your computer and it has to be connected to the same network. Then you can go into the application, select a manufacturer, pick one of the (many in the case of my TV manufacturer) codes, try one, save the file, download it through the wireless network to the iPronto, then see if it works. If not, lather, rinse, and repeat until it does. Very cumbersome and unbelievably time-consuming. And if you have one or more TV's, a DVD player or two, VCR, cable, satellite, DVR, TiVo, etc., this could consume days, not hours, of time. The only alternative is to take each non-Philips remote, point it at the iPronto, and learn each code button by button. No time savings there and the fun and excitement wears off very quickly.

After coding is complete however (and the configuration file is safely backed up on your computer's hard drive so you NEVER have to go through this EVER again), the device is amazing. It works well, and reliably. Battery life is very short during the extensive programming so keep it on the charger. After than, it has lasted me a little over a day without a charge with moderate use typical of a new toy.

The iPronto also is a web browser and that works well too. The 3rd feature is the onscreen electronic programming guide. It is downloaded to the iPronto periodically and is what you'd expect from a program guide not unlike the service you see on your TV from your cable or satellite company. And you can immediately control your equipment from this screen to, say, begin recording something in the guide. The guide has user interface issues, however. It has several built-in and unchangeable filters for movies, sports, etc., but doesn't not have any search ability by time, station, or program title. If you're used to the superb interface in a TiVo unit, you'll be frustrated. And the order of the items listed is not intuitive (e.g., station number, alphabetical, etc.) but something I've yet to ascertain. When you subscribe (and you must) you will get the updates for 3 years after which you have to renew. There is no cost.

The iPronto works as advertised except for the EPG subscription. I get conflicting statements from the device and the web site. The message on the iPronto itself reports that I do not have an authentic Philips device. Phone support has no idea what's going on and I've received no response from repeated emails. Heavy workloads are understandable, but most companies will offer some kind of acknowledgment; even an automated response would be welcome.

So close and yet so far!!!.......2007-02-10

By the way, as of this writing, the picture on Amazon for the dual-powered version of this calculator is NOT the correct picture.

Sure, this calculator does lots of really neat stuff. It would be impossible to give a rating based on the features. either it does what YOU need it to do, or it doesn't, like any other tool.

However, I can rate subjectively, and this thing is subjecting my head to a ROYAL headache!! The LCD viewing angle has been designed so that you only get good contrast when viewing it at a very weird angle - exactly the WRONG angle if you are in a room with overhead lighting or brightly colored walls. In order to get good contrast you must be looking at the LCD screen at such an angle as to make the LCD screen and the curvy faceplate reflect overhead lights, the ceiling, the walls, etc. If you attempt to view the LCD screen head-on in an attempt to reduce these inevitable reflected light sources, and so that the characters on the screen are not stretched due to exaggerated perspective, or so that the buttons actually face your torso so they can be easily pushed (god forbid) the characters appears extremely (!!) dim. That is, the "contrast" is set all wrong, and I haven't found any way to fix it (a technology that was mature for hand-helds in the 1980s).

Now, if there is a way to fix the LCD contrast and I'm just ignorant about it, I'll gladly take the egg on the face to fix it and get rid of my headache. But I doubt it.

Then there's the hard cover. Like so many other calculators these days, it comes with a nasty hard plastic cover that increases the thickness by 30%, and also increases the width a bit. And of course to go without the hard cover leaves you with nothing at all for protection. The soft cover some other calculators come with is thinner, lighter, and takes less PLASTIC to construct. But as we see all too often in thousands of OTHER made-in-China products, the more plastic you can get the consumer to buy and carry around, the "better"...or something.

So, just like most calculators, the hard plastic cover 'works' but sucks and should be a separately purchasable option. And this perverted LCD viewing angle is almost prohibitively uncomfortable and the inability to adjust is beyond asinine.

These are SUCH EASY THINGS TO FIX - it's ridiculous that Sharp would put so much excellent functionality into such a miss-the-mark package. Where's QA on this?!?

I typically use a TI-89, and this calculator is awesome. Too bad it is not allowed in the FE Exam. If you need a solid calculator, this one is it. The craftsmanship is great, the calculator can do Binary, Hex, Dec, and Oct, as well as statistics; Calculus and all you can think of. The only thing that I wish it did was "pretty print" BUY NOW.
