Pretty Good for the Money.......2002-04-24

Overall, this is a good product...good sound quality (awesome surround sound), and it gets very loud...good if you're throwing a party and need music to fill a room. However, the remote control leaves a lot to be desired. Sometimes, when I press it, it will skip a couple of preset stations, skipping over the one I want. It does the same thing with the volume. Another flaw...you can't switch modes via remote (tuner to cassette to CD) -- I must resort to getting up and manually switching modes. Also, you must manually turn the machine on and off.

Despite all of the complaints, it does produce incredible sound, and it is an attractive piece of machinery. The speakers are also detatchable, and the wires connecting them to the middle piece are pretty long...again, good for a party.

When the time came to replace the drum in my fax machine I went to an office supply store... 3 of them to be exact, including the one I purchased the fax machine from only to find out that these drums now are a special order item and you pay shipping on them. I ordered one had it shipped to my home , installed it and within a month started getting "white" columns running vertical down my received fax pages.. not good because now I am missing critical info. Called the help line and was told I had a defective drum. Cannot return or exchange it because It was a special order so now Panosonic is getting anothewr $100 plus shipping from me. This makes 2 drum purchases in less than 6 mo.

Fast, reliable, no coasters.......2004-12-03

Although it is a bit more expensive, I prefer this unit over the OEMs and generic DVD+RWs because of the reliability and consistency in operation.

My generic units were inconsistent recording DVD+Rs at 8x, sometimes taking 11 to 14 minutes recording the same full 4.7GB disc and resulting in too many "coasters". This unit takes exactly and consistently 8 minutes for a full disc at 8x recording, using the same media, with no coasters. I use Memorex 8x discs (single layer) for my recording.

The box includes Nero software, an audio cable and mounting screws. The unit comes with replaceable faceplates in black and white colors, the default being black. The Optorite web site (http://www.optorite.com) has instructions on how to change the faceplate.

One tiny note, I had to modify the DMA settings on the BIOS to UDMA2 (instead of the default Auto setting) to correct an issue with DVD playback (it was skipping tracks). I'm not sure if this is an isolated issue specific to my MSI board or if this is a general issue with the DVD unit.

Windows 95, 98 (except 98SE) and NT are not supported.
