I also had the problem of the "blown motherboard". As I read now, this is a common problem with this HP.
I live in Argentina and HP-Argentina won't even try to fix it. I have to buy a new notebook.
Rating: 1 star for the HP Pavilion zd7010 and 1 star for HP customer service. I would rate them with a zero, but Amazon doesn't give that option.

Battery Latch Broken - HP Lost Computer - Claims No Responsibility.......2006-12-26

Amazon is a great company and have many great buys on line here, however HP Buyer's please be wary. If you never have a problem with your computer, you will likely be happy. However if you send it in for service, you may be in big trouble. I sent mine in for a broken battery latch. This, by the way, was extremely weak for the task of holding the battery in the housing. However, the worst part is that I shipped it to HP under warranty. HP service is now claiming that they shipped it back to me, however they can not give me a valid tracking number. They say I should take my troubles to Fed/Ex. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am out the cost of the computer as far as I can tell and HP is claiming no responsibility. HP LOST the computer.

Excellent Desktop Replacement.......2005-11-13

I bought the zd7010 on a whim to replace my atrotious Gateway two years ago. I usually don't buy HP products, especially since HP and Compaq are one and the same. However, I have never been happier with it. I havent had a problem with it yet. I have read the earlier reviews on this site about putting to memory sticks in it and it wont work. Well I put two good quality sticks of 512Mb in it and had no problems. I suspected they put low quality sticks in it. Also, if people think this laptop is loud, then they dont have a real gaming computer at home. Anyway, this laptop has run everything I have thrown at it, including half life 2. I have also literally went around the globe with it on numerous times on several deployments. I would recommend this laptop to anyone

From reading forums this problem goes back to 2002 and affects other makes of latop where the DC jack design doesn't take in enough of the power cable leaving it open to user abuse. When I say abuse I don't mean chucking it around, I think catching it a few times is enough to dislodge it from the PCB - sooner or later this will result in a blown motherboard (from what I've read online).

I've not used other HP products but I would advise anybody spending £1000 plus on any laptop to search online for any potential design issues as well as take out an extended cover.

Don't buy!! Two Major Problems.......2005-02-10

First, it is the noisiest laptop I've ever heard -- possibly noisier than any desktop. This is just inexcusable and I feel that it could have been avoided.

Second, and far worse, it has a defect. It will start spontaneously shutting down for apparently no reason. I have researched online and found other references to it. HP claims that it happens with Photoshop or other intensive applications, but I don't run any. They also claim that it happens only when you have two sticks of RAM installed. I did, so I removed one, tried changing slots, and changing sticks. Nothing worked. It's still shutting down.

Of course, there is a one-year warranty and my unit is 14 months old, so I was told I was out of luck. It will cost $279 plus whatever parts they need (new mainboard??). In addition, their customer service is useless. They know nothing and you can tell they just recite policy and can do nothing else. Sounded like an Indian outsource situation to me.

In short, DO NOT BUY THE zd7010us!! You will avoid a very bad experience.

Sony DAV-FC9 DVD is Junk.......2007-03-30

I bought a Sony home theater with DAV-FC9 DVD player and it lasted less than 2 years. The other reviews indicate the same problem with the system dying at a very young age. I paid the Sony price to get a good system to go along with my Sony WEGA Plasma TV but it didn't work out that way. We used the DVD very little but now the Player is in total lock up. All we get is the "Standby" flashing for hours on end. All buttons are locked up and don't function. We Can't get DVDs in or out of the player. I am very disappointed with this Sony product, I expected better from them. If I am going to get "Junk", than I might as well buy "Junk" and save my money.

fell apart in three years.......2007-03-13

I bought this unit in 2004, and it fell apart by Jan. 2007. I got the flashing standby problem disucssed a lot by others here, and I could not play any disc with this unit. It will not even take in any disc, and the only thing still works is sound/speakers. Called customer service, very unhelpful - they just sent me to local service shop. I am very disappointed for paying over $700 for a Sony system that only lasts three years.

Expensive Paperweight.......2006-02-22

For the first six months I had this it was great, but then it
started to freeze up and would flash "Standby" all night long.
For the price that I paid for this system, I expect it too last a
wee bit longer. This is the second Sony DVD player that I've had
that's broken down in under a year. The quality of Sony's DVD players has really deteriorated in the last few years, I wouldn't recommend buying a DVD player from Sony at all - and I certainly wouldn't recomend this one.

DAV FC9, caveat emptor.......2005-12-29

I had my "dream" system for less than two years when it seized up, flashing "Stand By" and it would not reset. I called Sony and went to a local/approved technician who still had to ship it back to the manufacturing plant. I have been without a DVD/CD system for 4 weeks now and do not have a commitment to get it back. The latest estimate is $300 to fix it, not covered by warranty. I should've stuck with RCA, my previous system was 15 years old and still functioning. Sony's dream is my nightmare. Do not buy it.

Sony DAV-FC9.......2005-06-27

Yeah.. this thing stinks. I paid alot of money for it, and its doing exactly what Mike B says too. Thing freeze up all the time, and now when you try to turn it off, it blinks standby indefinately. I even went to bed, and woke up 8 hours later, and it still blinks. You have to unplug it and plug it back in to get it on. (JUNK!) Everytime I buy something from sony, I get burned. This is the 5th item now from Sony, that has failed on me before or in this case just after the warrany expired (UGH). Anyway, buy cheap stuff from walmart. Atleast when it breaks you only paid $50 for it.,, not $1500.
