Garbage.......2007-02-27

I purchased this piece of crap laptop in 2004. Everything ran smoothly until the power jack problem which occured in mid-2005. I was able to keep it running by forcing the power cord into the jack and wrapping it around the base of the laptop to keep it steady. That trick eventually failed and I angrily had to get it fixed in early 2006. Months later, the power jack became loose again and I once again had to do the wrap-around trick. I just had that fixed again (December 2006) and it crashed in January 2007.. this time a hard drive failure. Turned out that the hard drive slipped so I had to get a new one. It should be coming in in a week. Stayed tuned for more zv5120us horror stories.

PS. Repairs for this junk already cost me $200+. Don't get one. I'm serious.

PSS. Other malfunctioning parts: dead pixels on screen (and one really annoying vertical green line right down the side of the screen ), front volume control buttons don't work (or light up), battery dead (doesn't charge, not even after inserted into other laptops), DVD player can't read DVD's anymore, CD burner burns corrupt CD'S

PSSS. I reccommend this laptop only to those who have just one more day left to live and have no idea what to do with their leftover money.

Problematic Laptop.......2007-02-19

I bought a Z5000 series a year ago or so. Over time I have experienced the infamous "power jack" problem, where the power cord into the back of the laptop loosens and the computer shuts down. Currently I can still power the laptop but cannot get the battery to recharge, and if I bump the cord the unit simply shuts off with no warning. Along with that problem I have complained about an excessively noisy fan (I can hear it from the adjacent room) and HP replaced the hard drive for me shortly after I purchased the unit. The cost of repairing the power jack was quoted $400 from HP. I can buy a basic but pretty nice laptop for $800, so I don't see any point in throwing good money after bad. I would not buy one of these units again. I have owned several Dell laptops, and while they have not been perfect, the warranty was good for defective parts that came up. This seems to be an engineering problem that probably won't go away. Too bad as this is a pretty feature rich laptop, but I will give up the features and go back to a unit that historically was designed and built better than this one. I would feel better about HP if they would step to the plate and work with customers who purchased these units and have had problems, but they don't seem to want to get involved once we have exchanged money for product. Oh well.

Power Jacked.......2007-02-13

I bought it in January 2004 and the power jack went bad in January 2006. I bought a laptopp on the cheap end, knowing that it would either break or be outdated in a couple of years, and here I am, just as predicted.

I have to call Kenmore, now. My two year old refrigerator just stop refrigerating. Ah, the age of great quality and service! (Yes, Mr. Steve. I am sorry to here about your broken equipment, Mr. Steve. I'm sorry, but it seems I can not help you. Please hold.)

Inferior power jack! HP is in denial!.......2006-12-07

We bought this computer in 2004 and had it repaired for a loose power jack in 2006 (symptoms: loses power either sporadically or completely; eventually destroys the motherboard due to arcing at the power source and simply won't start). It took months to repair because it came back with a faulty keyboard and had to be sent back. Now, again, the power jack is loose. Looking online, I see this is fairly common for HP notebooks (as well as for several other brands). But HP doesn't "recognize" this problem and therefore won't recall it or offer free repair or a work-around solution. It's common for manufacturers to attempt to blame the consumer for moving the notebook around too much or for pulling out the adapter at an angle, or whatever. But we didn't even move this HP zv5120us notebook/laptop since it was last repaired, except for maybe once. Hey, you should be able to move the darn thing; it's a LAPTOP! If people want something to be done about this, they need to contact HP and complain. I did; unfortunately, they are just parrots that can only repeat that the problem is not recognized as an issue and that I can pay for a repair (hundreds of dollars and weeks of time lost.)

The one work-around that I saw people talking about online, an all-in-one media entertainment cable, is said by HP technicians not to be a real solution, as the power supply still arcs inside and will eventually cause damage/failure. Even if you want to try it, this cable is currently not to be found, at least not at the retail price of $40. You might find it on Ebay for many times that - probably because of all the HP owners trying to get around the loose jack problem, not realizing or caring that it's a temporary fix at best.

Thanks for letting me express my frustration. Maybe it will help to caution potential buyers, and maybe some people who are experiencing the same issue will contact HP to let them know it IS a "recognized" problem, at least among many of their customers. I'm big on consumer rights, and I feel it's just not right for HP to be in denial at the consumer's expense!

(Other weaknesses that we have noticed: The paint finish wears off very quickly; the dvd player stops sometimes while watching.)

this is a very good laptop. I have one now for over a year. Very good graphics, wide screen - love it, video memory is huge for the price...
Because it is widescreen, it is a lttle bit bulky. also the power adaptor is a little big. I personally don't care.

A clarification.......2001-03-24

I needed to clarify something I said in my previous review. I mentioned that the "spot focus" feature was very useful. I meant to say that the "focus lock" feature was very useful. This is a great thing to have and probably most small point and shoot cameras lack it.

This feature allows you to focus on your main subject in the center of the viewfinder, and then to lock the focus and to move off-center to include another part of the scene in the composition. Since most point and shoots focus on whatever is in the center of the viewfinder, this is a nice capability to have for certain situations.

Again, whether you have a Prego 90 or 125, they are great little cameras and probably the best out there. I recently visited a large store here where they had over two dozen different point and shoots on display to research the current offerings for a friend who wants to buy a compact camera, and I think the Rollei is still my first choice.

Two other new offerings that are very interesting are the new Nikon 125 35mm point and shoot, which offers a Panoramic mode similar to APS cameras, and the Minolta Freedom Zoom 125. Both incorporate aspherical lens elements where are reputed to produce a very sharp lens. If you're not sure about the Rollei you should check these out two.

Rollei Prego Cameras.......2001-01-10

I do not own this model, but I do own the Rollei Prego 90 and the Rollei Prego 145. I also own Nikons. I have found the Rollei Prego series point-and-shoot cameras to be the best in every way of any I have ever used: razor sharp focusing, consistent exposures, loaded with very useful features that all work, very reliable, and very user-friendly...clearly my favorite.

Superior picture, cinematic sound.......2002-08-30

This 20" TV from RCA delivers an exceptionally sharp and well balanced picture with stereo that makes you feel like you are in the theatre. One slight drawback is that the sound is heavy in the bass range which means you may have to adjust the treble to the high end in order to compensate. The Guide+ system is a sursprisingly ingenious feature where program information is automatically downloaded onto your tv making recording programs with a VCR as simple as a click. Getting Guide+ to work isn't hard, but it is a little bit of a chore, though the manual is very simple and clear. But the real selling point on this set is an exceptionally good picture (it looks as good as most flat tv's even if it isn't a true flat) which is due to the comb filter which is not a given on all TV's at this price.
