Amazon.com Product Description
The mid-line HP Pavillion zv5410us is a great desktop replacement, adding mobility to its powerful multimedia and home office computing features. The large 15.4-inch screen is perfect for watching DVD movies, and the Nvidia GeForce 4 440 Go video/graphics card keeps 3D gaming smooth. The zv5410us features a strong, 64-bit AMD Athlon 3000+ processor, 60 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, 54g wireless connectivity, DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive, and a multiformat memory card reader for easy access to pictures captured on your digital camera. For a more powerful AMD processor, 80 GB hard drive, and a DVD+/-RW and CD-RW combo drive, see the HP zv5430us.
The Basics
- Hard Drive: The 60 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is an average size for notebook PCs, offering enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors. You'll also be able to store a decent-sized digital audio library.
- Processor: AMD's Athlon 64 3000+ processor is built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. This 1.8 GHz 3400+ processor offers a system bus with speeds up to a blazing 1600 MHz and 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.) It includes such AMD features as HyperTransport Technology (which increases the communication between integrated circuits) and Cool'n'Quiet Technology that conserves power while also keeping the PC nicely quiet.
- Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (2 x 256 MB, DDR SDRAM) is a good start for power users, and it offers a faster than average RAM speed (333 MHz). It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 1280 MB (1 x 1024 MB, 1 x 256 MB), which is a smaller maximum than other entertainment-centric laptops.
- CD/DVD Drive: The combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive can read CDs at 40x, write at 16x, and rewrite at 10x speeds. It can read DVDs at 8x.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 101-key keyboard and two-button touchpad with on/off button and dedictated vertical scroll up/down pad.
Screen, Graphcs and Sound
Nividia's GeForce 4 440 Go video/graphics card delivers high-resolution antialiasing and amazing detail, and it features 64 MB of dedicated DDR video RAM. The 15.4-inch WXGA high-definition BrightView widescreen display has a 1280 x 800-pixel resolution. You'll get TV-quality images, even in direct sunlight. The integrated audio card offers 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro-compatible audio through the internal Harman/Kardon speakers.
Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The zv5410us has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's compatible with 802.11b and 802.11g networks. You get a good offering of connectivity options, including both USB 2.0 and Firewire:
- 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
- 1 VGA monitor port
- 1 S-Video out
- 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II, 32-bit)
- 1 parallel port
- 1 headphone jack
- 1 microphone jack
- Multiformat memory card reader, compatible with Secure Digital (SD), MultiMedia (MMC), Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, SmartMedia, and XD cards
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Gigabit Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).
Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Symantec Norton Antivirus 2005 (with 60 days of LiveUpdate), Adobe Acrobat Reader, Sonic RecordNow, InterVideo WinDVD, InterVideo Home Theater, Apple iTunes and Apple iTunes Music Store, Adobe PhotoShop Album STE, Muvee autoProducer, Microsoft Money, MSN Encarta Plus, and Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition (60 Day Trial Version).
The included HP Image Zone Plus photo and imaging software makes it easy to organize, edit, share, print, protect, and store your photos and video clips. Organize and find your photos easily by timeline, keywords, and/or location using the unique photo-globe mapping tool. Remove red eye and fix other common problems. Share your photos quickly via e-mails that include thumbnails with links to the full-sized images--without downloading time-consuming attachments.
Dimensions and Weight
Best used as a replacement for your desktop PC, the zv5410us weighs 7.9 pounds. It measures 11.18 x 14.25 x 1.8 inches (LxWxH).
Power
This notebook is powered by a 8-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which offers an average of 2 hours of battery life (dependent upon computing conditions).
What's in the Box
This package contains the zv5410us notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a one-year limiited hardware warranty and 30-day free software support.
Customer Reviews:
Great widescreen HP for short money.......2006-06-25
I bought this HP Pavilion ZV5410US about twenty-two months ago. No hardware problems. I play a few DVD's on it weekly. I've used some demanding video editing, photo editing, CAD programs, drawing programs, games... you get the picture; it doesn't choke on anything. I paid $950 for it at Staples on sale. Very happy with it.
I use a Sprint AirCard 580 WAN which lets me surf the web anywhere! At DSL speeds of 500 to 1000 Kbps! The battery life suffers, though, while using the PC WAN card. The Athlon 64 is a powerful CPU which needs, guess what? a lot of power! This machine is best suited for desktop replacement. Otherwise, bring the brick along with you and sit near an outlet at Star*bucks or the library. You need long battery life? - spend twice as much for a So*ny. One can, however, buy a high capacity battery for this laptop. Better to invest in adapter cables to use on airplanes and cars.
The hard drive is a Serial ATA 60 GB unit which has scored well in a hard drive tuneup program I ran on it. The screen is bright. The sound system is excellent for a laptop, but I usually use earphones to listen to my several gigabytes of songs in iTunes. Few speaker systems under a $1000 do justice to most recordings, but many earphones sound super.
In the time I have had this HP Pavilion ZV5410US I have had zero hardware problems with it. As with any Win*dows computer, you have to keep your startup list of programs short, keep your hard drive defragmented, run a good registry tuneup program such as Regis*try Mech*anic (which found over 950 registry errors the first time I ran it! and that was after having to reload the operating system after Win*dows refused to boot - no problems since then because I run it weekly now). If you hear any complaints about this machine, you are probably listening to someone who, like Pogo of comic strip fame, could say, "We have met the enemy, and he is us!" One has to understand that Win*dows is the buggiest major microcomputer operating system in existence. Don't blame the hardware.
HP has an excellent website where you can download updates to the BIOS or the video card. HP computers come loaded with an excellent help system. When I was a professional business computer programmer/analyst on HP's 3000 series minicomputers in another life, we had a saying: HP stood for 'High Priced' - not any more! This series using the Athlon 64 CPU and the wide screen display is, as the French say: bon marche, cheap in price. But high in value. Frankly, I don't know how they make a machine this good and still manage to sell it as such a reasonable price. You don't need to pay $1500 or $2000 for a dependable laptop that has enough processing power for anyone but a hardcore gamer or a nuclear weapons designer.
Gotta buy this one!.......2005-11-17
I purchased this computer almost a year ago from Circuit City. I bought it on special for $980! I think it's the best laptop for the money. This is my third laptop and by far the best. It's fast, bright and quite. Everything you can want in a mobile laptop. What sold me was the speakers. Harman/ Kardon are the BOSE system for the common laptop. Wait til you hear one of your MP3's on the system...it ROCKS! The base, the treble, the surround sound. Go to Best Buy and take a listen. ;0)
The only things I would change are:
1. Volume controls are small and on the lip of the laptop. They should be higher and easily accessible.
2. Add more memory. 512 MB is good, but more is always better. Another 512 MB stick should do the trick.
3. I don't recommend it for people that frequently travel, because this computer's screen is a bit to wide, unless the seat next to you is empty. :) Remember you have to buy the larger carrying case, the one that fits a 15'4 inch laptop. It will cost you a little more, but worth the price for this steal of a computer.
Yours Truly,
Moses W.
Pavilion zv5410.......2005-05-13
I just picked up the last model of this (actually the display model) from my local staples for $989 + the extended warrenty and this has got to be one of the best notebooks I've purchased.
The widescreen adds alot more viewage than you'd expect and is very nice to have for the money. The fans are ultra-quiet, a huge thing coming from a user of the super-loud ze4200 series of pavilions. The processor is outstanding, and is 64-bit instead of the intel 32-bit, which is ALOT nicer for more heavy-duty appliactions.
For the money, this is probably the best you can get. Some upgrades that you might look into:
-DVD Burner. Burn gigabytes instead of megabytes.
-1024 MB RAM. RAM is fairly cheap, and easily accessable. All you'd need is 2 sticks of 512 RAM that are compatible with this notebook and thats a sweet upgrade.
-80-120+ GB hard drive. 60 GB is more than enough for the average user. However, if you download movies, music, or if you dual-boot with more than one operating system (linux, other versions of windows, bsd..) Even external USB drives, although dual booting OS's on them is probably not the route to go, you can get a fairly cheap and pocketsized 80 GB harddrive now a days.
However, this notebook is outstanding standalone. Another plus is for Linux users, the graphics chipset is nvidia, so you get direct rendering kernel modules from nvidia themself.
Great Purchase .......2005-04-05
Excellent upgrade from a 98 desktop. Everything I could ever want in a multi task computer, including all of the preinstalled software. I am very happy with this choice.
Is a great laptop.......2005-03-07
Is a great laptop, excellent size, clear sound, great performance, I'm very happy with this buy. Things that I might add: Less heavy.

Customer Reviews:
I should have smelled gimmick.......2005-02-22
The case is a little confusing, and comes with no instructions. The quality is as can be expected from earbuds at this price. Their FRAGILE though. Both sides have broken (though they're easily fidgeted back into place). I never really cared about the interchangeable caps. I wouldn't recommned these unless you ARE interested in the caps (for whatever reason)
A Step Up from the iPod Earphones.......2005-01-28
I recently got these earphones to replace my broken iPod ones, and I can hear a noticable difference in the quality. They're not much different in shape or comfort IMO. The sound seemed a little tinny at high points in some songs, but the Treble Reducer EQ on the iPod pretty much fixed that for me. I like the case, and the caps are sorta neat I guess, although they're not really essential. Overall, I think they're a good replacement.

Now there's a convenient tool that fits in the palm of your hand and lets you quickly and easily send and receive e-mail from most phones worldwide. TelMail E-Mail Organizer is an all-in-one electronic messaging device that even lets you send faxes and e-mail enabled alphanumeric pages. TelMail uses advanced NASA developed audio technology called PocketMail that's very fast, highly reliable and noise-tolerant, so there's no need for computer or Internet access, additional phone jacks, wires, or modems. It's called the Sharp TelMail E-Mail Organizer.
Amazon.com Review
Send and receive e-mail using an ordinary telephone and the Sharp TM-20 mobile e-mail device with its built-in acoustic modem. Just pull the TM-20 from your pocket, place it against a telephone handset, and press one button to get your messages. No additional computer or Internet service is necessary.
The Sharp TM-20 is a stand-alone portable e-mail editor designed for travelers or anyone lacking a portable PC or access to the Internet. Setup consists of inserting the batteries and setting the clock. You must also sign up for the PocketMail e-mail service by calling a toll-free number or filling out a form on the Internet. The payment plan (either monthly or annual) permits you to receive unlimited text-only messages that are each no more than 4,000 characters long.
The menu prompts are not entirely intuitive, but by following the Quick Start instruction sheet, we set up the unit and the PocketMail account and sent our first e-mail message in about 30 minutes. The TM-20's complete alphanumeric keyboard and buttons are small, making touch-typing impractical, but our short test messages were easy enough to compose.
To send and receive messages, you open the acoustic modem "earpiece" mounted on the bottom of the unit, dial PocketMail's toll-free number, listen for a prompt, press the TM-20 against the telephone handset, and push one button. Reassuring LEDs let you know that the sending and receiving processes are taking place. We successfully sent and received several messages through different ISPs and desktop e-mail programs. We also sent an HTML e-mail message to the TM-20; the PocketMail system stripped out the HTML code but preserved the message itself.
The organizer functions are primitive, useful mainly for tracking names, addresses, and appointments. You can make backups of your TM-20's organizer and e-mail messages by connecting it via the included serial cable to a desktop PC. In our test, the backup program took a surprisingly long 15 minutes.
If you need little more than an alarm clock with your e-mail on the go, then the inexpensive Sharp TM-20 may be just for you.
Pros:
- Works with almost any telephone
- No cables or connectors
- No computer or Internet access required
- Inexpensive
Cons:
- Requires monthly or annual subscription fee
- Limited memory, not expandable
Customer Reviews:
This device is awesome........2000-08-19
It is so easy to use and you can use it anywhere. The address book and calendar functions are just as good as the organizer features offered by the Palm and Visor, but this is much cheaper and you can do email on it too.
PocketMail Points.......2000-08-14
Have been a PocketMail owner for 4 months and it is a great portable E-mail device as well as an electronic organizer. The only limitations are lack of a built in calculator and adaptability to send and receive messages via cell phones(digital)!
TM 20 good in the Yukon too.......2000-08-12
Used the Sharp TM 20 on a recent 9500 mile trip to Alaska, travelling thru British Columbia, Yukon Territory, Alaska, Alberta,Canada, Montana, Idaho, Nevada and home and the only time I ever had a problem was on an occasional payphone, once in Edmonton, Alberta and another time in Skagway, Alaska. Works on any phone other than digital cell, public phones are a breeze, pick up the receiver, dial an 800 number and send/receive at the same time. Not even a coin needed. Didn't have to call home one time in a two and one half month trip- pocketmail did it all!!
More than just email.......2000-08-08
You can do more than just send and receive email. You can get the weather forecast for your area or any area in the world, check on flight information and even get point to point driving directions. If you can ignore the clunkiness of dialing in to send your request and then dialing in a few minutes later to get your information, there is no better option, or you can have the information sent to an alpha pager if you have one. A laptop usually needs a "jack" and an internet account with a local access number, but this unit will work from any phone, except digital cellular, and the call is a toll free 800 number. It's worth the monthly charge just to be able to get concise driving directions from one address to another - across town or across the county.
A LIFESAVER.......2000-07-22
MY HUSBAND, THE TRUCK DRIVER, CAN NOT LIVE WITHOUT THIS EMAILER DEVICE. HE IS ADDICTED TO IT AND POUTS WHEN HE DOES NOT GET AN EMAIL FROM ME. THE SERVICE FROM POCKETMAIL COMES AT A REASONABLE PRICE AND SAVES US AT LEAST $20.OO A MONTH IN PHONE CALLS. WE STAY IN CONTACT AND IT HELPS HIM TO STAY CLOSE EVEN WHEN HE IS AWAY FROM HOME. HE IS, HOWEVER, CONSTANTLY BOMBARDED WITH QUESTIONS AND CURIOSITY FROM OTHER DRIVERS WHO HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS DEVICE. IT IS SO SUCCESSFUL, I BOUGHT A SECOND ONE FOR MY DAUGHTER WHO LIVES IN ARIZONA. A MUST HAVE IF YOU ARE A TRAVELER WHO NEEDS TO STAY IN TOUCH WITH HOME.
