tricky, but it does work.......2001-03-08

I would recommend this CDRW to someone only if he/she didn't have other ports -- IDE, SCSI, firewire -- with which to connect an external CDRW. USB is slow, right now you can get 8x and some 12x burners for the same price as this 4x USB burner.

I've read many good and bad reviews about this product before I tried it out, some people just can't get it to work reliably. It works with my Apple Powerbook G3 with built-in USB ports. It works really well, I can burn at 4x speed consistently. What I like best is that the burner is very quiet (soundless when it's not recording and just a quiet hum when it is). It's also portable, this burner even comes with its own bag.

The main drawback is I have to minimize my extensions/drivers whenever I need to use it, otherwise I get recording errors. I have an extension set with just the base MacOS 9 extensions plus the Toast USB driver (so I have to restart before and after burning, not very convenient). Also worked with MacOS 8.6 this way.

Pleasantly Surprised!.......2001-02-17

I am usually suspect when reviewing an installation manual containing numerous typos, and this manual was confusing enough to call customer support. After 30 minutes on hold, the tech support guy was most condescending and I was ready to take the unit back for a refund. However, I muddled through and the CD-RW is working like a champ! The unit is affordable, well constructed, attractive and compactly packed in its' own carrying case, and I'm now convinced that it will prove to be a portable and reliable device to back up our PC and Mac computers wherever we go.

A Good CD Burner.......2001-02-07

I bought this CD burner 2 weeks ago and it's been working fine from the start. Hopefully, I won't have the same problems as the previous reviewer. Amazon should include contact information for every product they sell. Not just an e-mail address but also phone numbers, when available. Consumer reports always does this. Additionally, it is February 6 and the rebate is still factored into the price when the rebate expired a week ago.

An absolute nightmare........2001-01-31

"Surely, you jest," you're thinking. No, we really did throw our money away on this one. Dealing with QPS has been a very bad dream I'd like to wake up from.

We bought our burner in June, 2000. By July it broke. By January they finally got back to us about it. On January 23, we still don't have an operational CD burner.

But let's back up a little bit. Here's the real scoop on what happened...

+ + + June 2000 Price was great. Reviews were good enough. We took a chance, hoping this burner would resolved some of our small-office backup issues, and allow us also to have a little fun burning our own CD.

We excitedly opened up the package and immediately began backing up client files and deliverables to CD. It worked great for about a month, before little things started going wrong.

+ + + July 2000, part 1 What went wrong? Some files weren't transferring completely -- only bits and pieces. Then the burner wasn't being recognized by the computer. Once we fixed that problem the burner itself wasn't seeing any CDs, whether they were blank CD-Rs or CD-RWs. Nothing.

By this point the burner was becoming more of a liability than an asset, in terms of time, because we were growing our company from 2 to 4 people. We needed a reliable resource more than ever and instead it became a time drain in trying to get it fixed. Time to contact customer service.

+ + + July 2000, part 2 We look at the QPS website to find out how to contact customer service. All they have is an email form (no phone numbers, which says something about how the company's attitude towards its own customers, but that's another story for a later time), so we e-mail them describing the problem and asking for advice. We didn't hear back from them in two weeks.

After two weeks, we emailed them again, same reason. Heard nothing from them.

+ + + August 2000 Emailed them asking for a return authorization so we could get them to repair or replace the drive. Heard nothing from them.

+ + + October 2000 Repeated this request again in October.

Finally found a real address of theirs inside our product material. I wrote them a nice letter and sent it off, asking them to repair or replace the product. Received proof of delivery three days later from the USPS; QPS was now in possession of our broken burner.

Months pass; I gave them plenty of time to fix our burner, giving their repair department the benefit of the doubt. I know these things can take time. But once January came, it's taking it a little too far. We need a usable burner!

+ + + January 2001 I emailed them again, this time cc-ing their president, Mrs. Priti Sharma, asking for an update on our burner. Did they have it on hand? Will they be fixing it?

Three days later they got back to us; Jeff, from Customer Service, asked me to fax him our letter, product receipt and USPS proof of delivery. I did so immediately.

Two weeks later, I have not heard back from Jeff or Mrs. Sharma. I've just emailed them again, asking them to just decide; I don't want an update, I don't want a progress report, I simply want the burner I paid for, which is badly needed at this point for our growing company. Neither Matt nor Mrs. Sharma has contacted me.

Point is, we spent money on a burner that was operational for one month. We sent it off for repairs and neither it nor QPS's customer service department is anywhere to be found, seven months later.

Yes, we threw our money away. I'll know better next time.
