Nice looking all-in-one DSL modem/router.......2006-06-26

The idea of combining a DSL modem and network / wireless router seems like a no-brainer. One less box to worry about.

The Netgear DG834G does a good job overall. The user interface is fairly simple so setting up things like a network security key are no problem.

Only three small issues with the product:

- Wireless range is somewhat less than the old Linksys router this one replaced. My wife's laptop is about 20 feet away from the antenna (and has to go through 2 interior walls), so coverage is spotty.

- The frequency of 2.4 GHz happens to be the same frequency my wireless phone uses, so it's pretty much a choice of which one you need the most at any given time.

- The modem/router has frozen on me occasionally when left on for extended periods of time (e.g. overnight). Cycling off/on fixes the issue every time.

intolerable latency issues with WiFi (WoW players take note).......2006-06-17

I bought the DG834G to replace these 3 separate components that were practically falling out of my wiring box with this single, simple, and quite snazzy-looking unit.

I was very happy at first because setup was a breeze and I had my laptop (PowerBook) and my PC up and running in no time. There appeared to be no issues at all until I fired up World of Warcraft and played for an hour or so.

Somewhere between 1 and 2 hours, the latency of my connection shot through the roof and I lagged so badly I had to logout. I tried an ethernet cable to the laptop and played for a couple more hours with no issues.

After experimenting with a number of settings and rebooting the DG838G a number of times, I had to conclude that it was a problem with the unit. I picked up a WPN824 instead and went back to my old DSL modem and my problems were solved.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has had luck with the DG834PN or even if any other WoW players with the DG834G have had similar issues.

Cheap and solid!.......2006-03-29

I bought a refurb unit a couple months ago, to replace the ailing Speedstream modem which SBC Yahoo! sent out to me when I signed up. It's fast, reliable, easy to set up, and I've retired my Linksys firewall and D-Link WAP at the same time - - 1 box instead of 3, now! No complaints whatsoever.

A product with no customer support at all.......2005-02-01

I bought this product last year and happily used it for two months. Then it started to drop down my dsl connection every 1-2 minutes and it took 5-10 minutes to reestalish it. I called Netgear support they told me to change the MTU size, I have tried everything between 1000-1492 and guess what, nothing changed. I called the Netgear "so-called" support once again 2 weeks ago thinking something might have changed and they asked me to do a few configs on phone and I did but nothing changed again and then they said "ok. a more experienced technician will call you back". He called me 2 days later and again asked me to change my MTU setting which of course did not work. I told him I want to return the product willing to pay any possible fees that may arise if it is because of me the product is malfunctioning and guess what they said: "Well we should first make sure that your router is not working." That was the more experienced technician! I said "Thank you for your support. I don't want to talk to a more more experienced technician. I will no longer use this stupid thing and any other Netgear product and will make sure that people know what kind of a support you have!" and hence is the message. I now have a Linksys product and I am very happy with it. I personnally would not recommend any Netgear products to anyone.

Masterpiece, but lacks a few minor features.......2004-12-15

This is a real masterpiece. Loaded with features, elegant package and very easy to use.

I just got it, plugged it and logged on to the web administration. First thing I did was applying the latest firmware which was a very smooth operation that took less than 5 minutes, then it suggested it should figure out automatically my ADSL connection and I clicked yes, but it took forever so I cancelled and entered the configuration manually. Unlike some other routers, it doesn't require a router reboot to apply new settings which is a very good plus. I was up and running in very few minutes. Then I started exploring the features and found a whole lot of them.

The wireless AP can be set to support b, g or b and g (default setting), the only drawback is that you must select a channel manually. I believe it should be better to hop to the clearest channel automatically.

Other features contain extensive network logging with flags to enable/disable logging certain events such as DoS attacks or attempted access to blocked sites. Advanced website blocking which eliminates the need for a proxy server, you can activate it per schedule or all the time or disable it. You can also exclude some trusted clients from the blocking. Firewall is also a nice feature and can also be scheduled, turned on or off all the time. You can also email the logs to a certain address. The drawback here is that u need an SMTP server, I believe the router should've had its own.

You can also dignose the router and the LAN and WAN through the diagnostics page, set static routes, enable remote management of the router through the WAN, and my all times favourite service : the router has a built-in DynDNS client if u have a dynamic IP and u wish to have a fixed hostname ! Finally you can backup and restore your settings so u don't have to go through all settings again in case u had to reset ur router !

Truly, I believe this is worth the money I paid for and the few drawbacks I mentioned are no big deal at all, and the pros outweigth them by far. If you want to save your money, save your desktop space and have a 5-in-1 device for all your needs (ADSL modem, advanced router, ethernet switch, wireless access point and a firewall) then go for it ! I'm glad I bought it !

Okay, was it 'really' a business necessity? You bet! I waited until I could get a knowledgable clerk to answer my questions and concerns and then I pounced! This hybrid's predecessor made you choose: tv or pc; pc or tv, and you had to manually flip a switch....one or t'other. Not so with this baby....surf the net, analyze spreadsheets, get and answer mail, write a letter...none of this interferes with your fav show peeking at you from the lower left hand corner (or right hand corner, or whatever and wherever you choose to put it).

It simply doesn't get any better than this (that is...at least this month!).

Buyers and daydreamers note: we use a wireless connection for our DSL, but as far as we know, you still must have a hard connect to your cable to make this PC/TV function as you envision.

The choice we are forced to make is: move the office to the cable connection or the connection to the office.

Either way, the 150MP is inevitable.

Great for amateurs looking for a zoom.......2000-11-13

I recently tried this zoom at a camera store. It's distance is amazing, though it is also very cheap so it delivers an amatuer interface. The lens makes pictures much, darker ruining some of your shots that you take inside, but other than that its a great lens. I an no pro but if you have the extra cash go for a better Tamron 75-300 or a 28-200 Sigma.

I highly recommend this lens for amateurs like me, but if your a pro then forget about it!
