Product Description

The Panasonic PV- D4752 with Progressive Scan plays most DVD-R disks, as well as audio formats such as CD-Rs and CD-RWs containing MP3 recordings. The unit features Simulated Surround Sound, an illuminated remote control that easily operates your DVD/VCR, and most TVs and cable/DSS boxes and DVD Resume play that starts your movie from where you left off, even if you press stop. Front A/V inputs make it easier to connect your camcorder, headphones, game system or other video equipment to your DVD/VCR. The PV-D4752 combination deck is the same width as standard audio components, making it ideal for integrating into any home theater.

Amazon.com Review

Combining videophile picture quality with compact simplicity, Panasonic's PV-D4752 plays both DVDs and VHS tapes, and it's a whiz at decoding MP3 CDs, suiting it well to movies, television, and music. Its component-video outputs even perform progressive scanning, a feature designed for use with high-definition and HD-ready TVs. Progressive scanning displays all 480 video lines in one pass, rendering horizontal image lines sequentially rather than interlacing the even lines with the odd. The result is high vertical resolution and flicker-free, high-density images--reason enough to make the HDTV leap. The unit's S-video and composite-video outputs work fine with most older TVs. If you'll be using the interlaced output from the DVD player, one RCA composite-video connection (supplied) handles both DVD and VCR outputs. But if you plan to watch DVDs through the component-video or S-video outputs, know that the VCR signal still requires a separate composite-video connection.

The PV-D4752 plays CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, standard DVD-Video discs, and most DVD-Rs (recordable DVDs), from which you can easily make VHS copies of wedding footage, birthdays, and other special events. Copy-protected commercial DVDs cannot be recorded. We were duly impressed with the PV-D4752's MP3 playback abilities. Each player handles discs differently, but this model read our most difficult test discs, offering fast track skips, scanning within MP3 files, and repeat functions for tracks, folders, and discs. The player does not support ID3 tags, however, and it limits the display of file and folder names to 11 characters. The two biggest drawbacks are the unit's reliance on the onscreen display (the front-panel display shows no elapsed time during DVD or VHS playback) and its habit of interrupting whichever format you're watching when loading another.

For connections, you get one each composite-video, S-video, and component-video output, as well as two sets of composite-video inputs (one on the front and one at the rear) and one RF (cable-type) input and output for the VCR. An optical digital-audio output feeds a surround-sound signal to your Dolby Digital- or DTS-decoding audio-video receiver. It sports two sets of stereo RCA analog audio outputs and two sets of inputs (one each on the front and back). --Michael Mikesell

3 out of 5 stars works fine-- so far. maybe i'm lucky.......2004-01-02

I bought mine about a year ago (though not from Amazon), and I've had no problems at all. If I had read through these reviews, I probably would have steered clear of the unit.

I got mine really cheaply at a mega-warehouse place near my house where I tend to shop more for a six-months' supply of diapers and toilet paper than consumer electronics.

It's sort of boring really, just works without incident. I don't know if I like Panasonic per se, but because this combo unit worked out fine I also picked up a really cheap receiver to go along with it, and that also has been just fine.

I guess I was lucky to get an ok one.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2003-11-29

We bought this DVD/VCR combo unit last Christmas (2002). It still works as well as the day we set it up. I have found that it spits out about 25% of the VHS tapes we try to put in. We've found a trick: if you push the tape in at the top left corner, it goes in alot easier. We shouldn't have to do this though. The VCR does get a bit noisy when rewinding and fast-forwarding. But it does rew/ffwd so much quicker than any VCR's we have ever owned. Also, could someone please post how to illuminate the remote? I've searched the remote and the manual with no success. I think the "illuminated remote" is just a typo on the website.

5 out of 5 stars Mine is Great, but there's always the Luck of the Draw..........2003-06-30

The thing that strikes me most as I peruse these and other related reviews is how often any given unit has ardent fans, giving a product 5 star ratings, while other users pan them and express great frustration over their units' technical problems. No VCR-DVD model seems exempt. It must be the "luck of the draw". Take this specific Panasonic model, for example. I bought it a little less than a year ago and it has been just fantastic! No problems. Everything works fine. It was easy to set-up and operate. It has never chewed-up a VCR tape, nor damaged any DVD's. No pauses, shudders, or explosions. Picture and audio quality have been superb. Absolutely NO service issues. I am very pleased with this unit and can recommend it with a clear conscience to anyone. As an aside, use of the s-video connector cable instead of the old composite cable noticably improved picture quality. I also liked the fact that this unit is totally configured for home theater and HDTV, which I don't currently have but may convert to in the next couple of years. My only minor complaint is that the display does not have a VCR tape counter, so it is difficult to tell how far the tape has played, recorded, rewound, etc.

So, if you buy this item, it should work fine for you too. Unless, of course, the luck of the draw gives you a lemon to deal with...

1 out of 5 stars never again a Panasonic product for me.......2003-06-01

On October 12, 2002, we bought a Panasonic PV-V4612S VCR from Circuit City to replace an old VCR. We took the VCR home, hooked it up, and tested it to make sure it worked. We have two VCRs and don't use either one very often, so it wasn't until December that we realized that the new Panasonic VCR would not play or record on older video tapes but instead would spit these tapes out immediately. Our other VCR (and the VCR that the Panasonic was purchased to replace) never had this problem.
I called Panasonic's 800 number and discussed the problem with a Panasonic representative because I thought maybe the VCR was supposed to reject older tapes for some reason unknown to me. The Panasonic representative assured me that the VCR was not supposed to reject older tapes and told me to take it to an authorized Panasonic service center, which in this case was Consumer Electronic Service. I dropped off the VCR at Consumer Electronic Service. However, Consumer Electronic Service (CES) told me there was nothing wrong with the VCR. I brought in one of our older tapes and showed them that the VCR rejected the tape. The CES representative told me that it worked fine with his sample tapes (which appeared to be brand new) and that there wasn't a problem if there was only one tape that the VCR wouldn't work with. I told him it was many tapes, that our other VCRs had no problem with these tapes, and offered to bring in more tapes to show him the problem. He refused, insisting that if he could get the VCR to work with his sample tapes that there was no problem with the VCR. I appealed to Panasonic, but this time a different Panasonic representative told me that Panasonic would have to accept the service center's diagnosis. They said that I could not get a refund or exchange the VCR for a new one. The only option Panasonic now offered was for me to return the VCR to Panasonic in exchange for a "reconditionedE(i.e., used) machine. Of course, by the time I got the used VCR back, the product would be out of warranty.
I am amazed that Panasonic and their certified service provider both refuse to admit that the inability of a VCR to play some videotapes is a defect. I am also very disappointed that the only option offered by Panasonic was to exchange this VCR for another, used VCR which might have had the same problem, at which point the product would have been out of warranty. I am sure that most consumers expect to be able to play their entire video tape collection on a VCR that they purchase. Because this VCR could not play the majority of our videotapes, I believe that this problem certainly does constitute a breach of warranty and consumers who purchase such a machine should have the option of returning the VCR to the manufacturer for a refund. It certainly seems that here, Panasonic used its certified service provider to create the illusion of independent evaluation while actually the certified service provider must be collaborating with Panasonic to declare defective merchandise "non-defective,Ethereby sticking the consumer with merchandise that does not work for its intended purpose. I will not be doing business with either Panasonic or Consumer Electronic Service of Cary in the future.

                    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Uniden TRU-4465 Phone is OK!.......2006-03-21

I bought this phone a couple years ago. Replaced one battery on one handset only because my daughter insisted on using it across the street at the laundry matt. She was warned not to because it would kill the battery too fast. It has good range too. I am able to travel approximately a 4 minute walk to the store and still receive a connection and make/receive calls. I reccomend it.

1 out of 5 stars Breaks easily and the WORST customer service.......2004-06-17

Had to send the base unit back TWICE due to it not charging the handset. Was able to send it back after many, many phone calls and explanations to the rep. Have had this phone for less than one year and already hate it for it's unreliability and lack of functions.

WORST customer service I've ever encountered. Well, except for Dell, but that's another review.

I recommend the Panasonic MultiTalk. It costs a little more but worth it.

                    3 out of 5 stars using it as a speakerphone didn't work.......2004-03-12

The handsets for this worked great but the mic for the speakerphone was under the machine so to get it to pick up my voice at all I had to lift it up and talk into it. Since this kind of defeats the purpose of a speakerphone, I had to return it. I'm bummed - it worked great otherwise.

5 out of 5 stars Still The Best After A Year.......2004-02-25

I have been using this product for about a year now (since April 2003) and it is literally the happiest I have ever been with a retail cordless phone system. I telecommute and I am on the phone constantly with work and clients, to say nothing of family and friends. Despite 5+ hours a day of talk time, these phones never seem to lose their charge or their clarity. The only problem I have with clarity is if someone is running the microwave oven, otherwise the connection is always crisp. The separate stored numbers allow me to have one phone with all my personal information on it, and my roommate to have a separate one. Other reviewers have cited this as a flaw, but anyone living with a teenager or roommate will see it as a blessing. Others have stated that it's a flaw that both phones cannot be on at the same time. As a telecommuter I am grateful for this feature; when I am on a business call there are no unprofessional interruptions made by someone in another part of the house accidentally picking up the phone to make a call while I am speaking on the other handset. The additional handset plugs into a regular outlet - so it provides a great way to have a phone in a room where there isn't a phone jack. The only reason I might have given this a 4 ½ star had it been an option would have been the following reasons:

                    1. I have a minor hearing problem and I'm sensitive to volume levels. The loudest setting of this phone is what is closer to the medium setting of most other phones. I would like to see a future model offer one or two more amplified levels of volume. The clarity of this phone, however, lets it get away with this much more than the average phone could.

                    2. I have not, as of yet, found a headset that works well with this phone. This makes it mildly inconvenient for telecommuters like myself. Playtronics headsets work okay, but it's not a stellar match-up. The saving grace is that the speakerphone is very clear, but many clients don't like being on speaker phones.

Overall I am very happy with this little system and have not encountered any concerns in performance or usability over the course of a year. Some of the buttons are small, but in a month or so of using the phone, your hands will instinctively find the right spots, and it's worth it to have an overall compact phone that maintains clarity.

                    5 out of 5 stars good.......2004-02-19

This is a great phone, especially if used across 2 floors. The base unit in the basement can easily be used with the handset unit placed in the upstairs. Calls are clear, but sometimes there is a "tunneling" effect, which is hardly noticible. the costomizable features of this phone are great, along with the phone book, caller id featers etc. buy it if you're looking for a phone that can be placed elsewhere in the house where a phone jack is unavailable!
