Should you really "shake it like a Polaroid picture?"
Ever since the song "Hey Ya" by Andre 3000 of Outkast came out, everyone is shaking their Polaroid pictures. Shaking or waving a Polaroid picture to help the development process originated in the early days of peel-apart film. After peeling the negative, the image needed to dry before it could be handled, so waving the photo helped it to dry more quickly. When using the integral films (600, Spectra, 500, SX-70/Time-Zero, i-Zone) that are used in our most popular current camera models (Polaroid One, OneStep, JoyCam, etc.), the image develops and dries behind a clear plastic window and never touches the air, so shaking or waving has no effect. In fact, excessive shaking or waving can actually damage the image. Rapid movement during development can cause portions of the film to separate prematurely, or can cause "blobs" in the picture. The best way to ensure a perfectly developed image is to simply lay the picture on a flat surface immediately after it exits the camera.

There are times when only a Polaroid will do, this camera is sleek and compact and super easy to use, kids LOVE it and it is great when you want to SEE the photo in your hand while on the road, the camera is a baragin but watch the price of the film it can get pricey if you don't keep your snapping under control.

This camera works great. It stays in my car and gets bounced around a lot. I had a cheaper one (the basic polaroid model) and after any turbulace it would spit out 3 pictures at a time and none would turn out. At $1 a pic, that's not cost effective. I've had no problems with this and it works great everytime I've used it. Worth the extra couple bucks.

Love this camera.......2007-01-10

This camera is such a pleasure to use. In freezing cold or searing heat -which we have a lot of in this area - it keeps cranking out the pictures. I also have a couple of digital cameras, but when I want a picture without having to deal with settings and other distractions, this is the camera I use. Love it!

The only reliable and functionally satisfying aspect of my Tasco Stargate 114 telescope is the little white light that illuminates the key pad. Considering the amount of Australian dollars (Money) spent, I now feel my recreation money would had been better spent wiring ten trillion little white lights and transmitting photons towards aliens.

Okay, after a little practice with my Tasco 114, and getting in touch with the NexStar group, and getting additional encoder information,I must revise my previous review.

The encoder numbers entered into handpad computer are the scopes weakest point, since they delete themselves if you pick the C114 configuration as advised in the owner's manual. Keep your scope on Custom/Model or you loose the scopes go to capability.
If you do loose this code, go to the Nexstar group on Yahoo and get the sequence and manually reload it.

One of the strong points of the scope is the optics. I must admit, this F10/1000mm focal length has a rather ingenious way of using the built in barlow to achieve the focal f/10 focal ratio. Star tests revealed a perfect concentric circle or airy disk on inside and outside focus at high power.

Once you conquer all the bugs, this little robotic scope is really a good performer. Oh, I also wouldn't mount the hand control bracket on the mount, since it prevents the adjustment of the tripod leg. Attach it afterwards.
Oh, you can do slow motion adjustments with the hand controller. Just press undo, press the directional arrow and its opposite to make little tweaky adjustments.

To Go Or Not To Go?.......2002-06-12

Hello Amateur Astronomers,
Purchased the little Gem at Service Merchandise in Illinois, back in Feb, 02. What I did not like about this Go To scope was Star Guide hand control and that chinsy battery pack. (watch the frail wires, they break off the terminals.)
First, the Star Guide hand controller is very complicated to figure out. For example, when first turned on it reads "custom"
What is custom? Custom means the kind of scope. The instructional manual then reads if your telescope doesn't function properly, then go to the menu (#3) and scroll down to the correct model. Listing custom again and 3 other choices. Oh, those many addendums! One addendum to the manual advises you just skip everything and be sure to use "auto align" citing a two star alignment. Another addendum then reads it it not advisable to use this method since you have to know the stars names and location. Well, guys, what other method is there?
Be careful, though, the little battery pack that powers the 114 is not built into the scope. I don't know how many times my scope wrapped the rubber coated wire around the tripod and into the mount. My advise is to velcro the Vinyl covered pack to the fork mount, and get the wires (which are black) out of the way.
Another gripe I had was switching observing locations. Finding stars at the first location, the scope functioned properly, however, for some reason, it didn't like Dansforth Illinois. Even though I picked kankankee as the nearest city, it just wouldn't point to anything, not even Venus. I suspect someone forgot to program other terrestial locations in the hand controllers database. So my advise is to load the proper latitude and longitute into the controller if you're going to switch observing sites. Oh, and those poor blotes in Ohio, well Ohio, and all its cities, are listed under the State of South Dakota? Also Tasco is not honoring its warranties, since, as I understand it is going under.

Starguide Telescope Simply Awesome.......2002-02-13

Purchased the telescope 02/09/02. Within 15 minutes I was seeing planets. The alignment setup process was easy and simple. I have never owned a telescope before and if its this easy to see the planets and stars, I might buy an even stronger lens. The two that come with it are good, but they should have used a stronger one. All in All, EXCELLENT!!!

How to remove the black carboard lens cover from front cover.......2001-12-18

I purchase this scope on 12/22/01 and was setting it up. It tells were you can align with your eyeball while some else adjust the front lenseMine has a piece of black paper in side and I would like to removed it.

I was only able to use this CD burner for less than a year. Suddenly, it stopped working. Contacting TDK customer support is a nightmare. There is no direct phone number and assistance is obtained by emailing a form. This burner is NOT worth the price.

What you see is not quite what you get.......2004-11-18

I got mine at J&R via Amazon for a very cheap price. However, I ordered the 5200 shown above but was sent a 5201B. It has essentially the same specs - the 5201B has no stand or on-off switch, and there is a "bump" on the top center of the unit instead of being flat as on the 5200 - so I have no real complaint about the product, though the fact it is not what was ordered was surprising. My email to J&R got a standard reply directing me to call them (toll-free) regarding my order...I'll pass.

The unit came complete with USB cable, power supply & cord, a blank TDK CD, and a Nero Express bundle which is the "lite" version the software, and quick start guide.

I think it was fifty bucks well spent regardless of the variation in the product description. Pay your money, take your chances.

Not compatable with some versions of Windows 98........2004-11-02

This drive arrived promptly, the instructions were clear and easy to follow, the unit seemed great - except that it didn't work! After a couple of afternoons with the TDK support people (who were very helpful) I found that this system does not work with some versions of Windows 98. They apparently don't know which versions or systems are incompatable. I'm running Win98 SE v.4.10.2222A on a Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop. I'm giving them two stars for effort, but I can't say I'd recommend this drive.

I had trouble with another brand cdrw, so I was nervous about trying this one. I took it home and I was burning cd's within five minutes. It came with the nero software and it has worked flawlessly for me. I have had not problems with my win 98se; no lockups, no trouble connecting through the usb. I highly recommend this cdrw.

Setup
The only difficulty I found in using the DVD-R's was getting the DVD-R out of the jewel case. If you try to pull it open from the top, and the plastic just bends (and you can see that it is clasped in the middle). When I tried placing my thumb on the middle of the right edge and pulling outward, my thumb would just slip off. The best way I found to open the case (after much experimentation) was to place the palm of my hand on the front of the cover, and while applying light pressure with my palm, using my fingers to left the right middle edge open. I've never seen another case open like this before, so without knowing this trick up front (no instructions on the box), some less patient consumers may find more drastic ways of freeing the DVD from the case. Once you know the trick, it's pretty easy.

Case aside, the DVD-R itself is just like any other DVD-R. Load it into your Mac's DVD burning drive (whether the Superdrive or a 3rd party drive), and run your DVD-burning software. Piece of cake.

In Use
Sporting the movie reel look, the main selling point of this DVD-R is definitely the presentation. However, it's important to note whether you are sacrificing quality for a nice look. In this case, not at all. The DVD-R records from 1x to 4x speeds, and in all my uses, it recorded flawlessly. The DVD-R discs are based on Mitsubishi Kagaku Media's Metal Azo recording dye technology, which, in simple words, means that the discs produce recordings with greater power margin and better sensitivity than earlier generation discs. The DigitalMovie DVD media also utilizes Ultra-Precise Molding technology, which means that you get very flat discs with stable high-speed rotation during reading and writing. Add to these facts that it comes with a lifetime warranty, and you have a solid and reliable DVD-R product.

Of course, the reason you'll want to buy these DVD-R's is because instead of a plain non-descript print on the top of the DVD-R, there is a movie reel image printed right on the disc, providing a very nostalgic and movie-like feel to the media. It's perfect for putting your home movies on, especially as gifts for family and friends. I used iMovie to put together a couple of movies of my nephew's first year, and burned them onto the DigitalMovie DVD-R using iDVD. They made great gifts! There was not a whole lot of room to write on the disk, so I had to abbreviate the title of the movie. If I wanted to make a list of all the contents in the movie, I could have created a printed slip, and placed it in the jewel case. Although the case may not be the easiest case to open, it is a very nice looking case, and the DVD carrier comes out so that you can insert a printed description of the contents behind it. You could also slide in a cover on the front as well (similar to a CD case, except instead of sliding left to right, the cover slides from top to bottom). The case is also sized similar to cases that commercial DVD's come in, so it will fit nicely into your DVD library.

Summary

Excellent product.......2004-02-18

I originally bought three packs of these because they were on sale at Best Buy for 4.99 per 3 pk--a little less than 1/3 of the cost listed here. I've checked BestBuy's site and they have them for 9.99. Don't know if I got lucky on the price or what.

I needed the -R format because my, ah, lower end set-top DVD players (as opposed to my most excellent Pioneer 106D burner!) won't read +Rs with any reliability. Only one +R movie was actually viewable on them whilst both PowerDVD and WinDVD and Media Player read them just fine; so I knew it was the players' problems, not the disks; my mother's high end set top can read +Rs no problem.

It reads my DVD-RWs just fine (a good way to see if you've burned it right without risking creating another coaster; you can always just erase and start over!) The two players I have are both APEX's. Good players, light of features, of course, but that's why they are "lower end." The electronics are basically the same, it's the bells and whistles that cost.

So, I bought these Verbatim -Rs because they were much cheaper than anything else on the shelves and, besides, they look cool.

I've legally backed up four DVDs now and have had ZERO problems with these disks. I highly recommend them, espcially if you have a piece of hardware that's got issues with DVD+Rs.

Five star all the way.
