4 out of 5 stars Wish I could find a hard case for this.......2006-08-25

I like this voice recorder. I just wanted something for my purse, so I could take a voice memo for myself, or record nature sounds like birds. It's a nice little recorder for that. But it keeps getting turned on by things in my purse, which runs the batteries down. I wish I could find a hard shell case for it, to prevent that from happening.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good sound, missing some features.......2005-02-16

I was actually pleasantly surprised at the sound quality this unit gives, considering that there is no way to attach an external microphone. If you look on the Olympus website, you'll see that the DW90 has a sampling frequency of 22 kHz in HQ mode. That's better than the norm of 8 to 16 kHz that many others use (although not as good as something like the DM10 or new DS-2, which record at CD quality 44.1 kHz). The frequency response is only 300 to 5,800Hz, so I wouldn't try recording a symphony, but that's comparable to many of these voice recorders (again that DS-2 actually covers 100 to 17,000Hz. Impressive). If you're willing to download to PC frequently and don't need to capture more than 20 minutes at a time, it's a pretty good little device.

It's also impressive that even after my wife dropped the recorder in the bath, it still works. Now the batteries don't last long, and I can't rewind, but everything else works great.

2 out of 5 stars Very Small Capacity.......2004-04-26

I purchased this thinking that I was getting a recorder that would actually hold 90 minutes of audio. Unfortunately that capacity is only available for "LP" mode which is highly distorted. HQ and SP modes record very well, but only plan on getting 20-30 minutes of use out of it before the memory is full.

The PC connection was not automatic, despite the instruction manual comments that no additional software was required. On the whole, I found no little to no support material available on the Olympus website.

I returned the recorder and am still looking for something <$100 that provides 2-3 hours of high quality recording with a PC connection.

5 out of 5 stars Proved with time.......2004-01-21

I've been using this recorder for about 5 months now, and I love it now just as much as I did when I first purchased it. One thing that I like very much about the design is that the Erase button is extremely hard to accidentally push (and that, twice) - which shows someone was thinking when they designed it. The software installed perfectly, and works perfectly. I am very satisfied with this little recorder; it does not weigh much, but it gets the job done - and very well at that.

5 out of 5 stars Compact yet full of features.......2003-09-09

I just got this little guy (so small it fits in the palm of my hand), and I am thoroughly satisfied with it. It is small, yet it has a lot of features, and it seems to be well manufactured - doesn't seem like it will break real soon or anything. I have recorded four files so far, and have even transfered them to my laptop (running Win 98 SE). The installation of the software was seamless, and all works great. I have not had a chance to try out some features of the recorder (lecture mode for instance), but I am very satisfied with what I got so far.

Product Description

If you're looking for a dictation device that marries extraordinary design with technical functionality, then take a closer look at the DW-90. Its directional microphone defines the appearance of this compact, lightweight model. However, this is not a design gimmick. When pointed at the speaker, it assures good recording quality over a distance of up to 6 meters, making the DW-90 ideal for lectures and large meetings. Besides three quality modes, three folders and an LCD, this model supports USB connection to the PC.

Product Description

No more typing! The lightweight and slim Olympus DS-150 delivers all the benefits of digital speech processing. One of the slimmest, most compact recorders ever produced, DS-150 digital voice recorder has 8MB of built-in memory that offers up to 160 minutes of recording time. It features direct file access and comprehensive editing functions. Variable control voice actuator (VCVA) technology optimizes built-in memory by ceasing record functions when the microphone senses silence. Two folders store up to 99 messages each. Messages can be moved from one folder to another for easy organization. Partial erase function erases one message at a time or an entire folder at once. LCD display shows message number, real-time counter, time remaining, current time and date, and operating modes. DS-150 features fast playback mode - you can listen recordings 30% faster than real time. This digital recorder allows for easy data transfer and secure data storage. Extend you communication capabilities and liven up your messages by e-mailing spoken words! Downloading speech files to the PC is a breeze. Simply connect the recorder to your computer, with the provided serial cable or optional USB data transfer kit, and select files to download. You can download the entire contents of the recorder, one specific folder or even one specific recording. External earphone jack lets you use an earphone or headphone for private review of recordings. Microphone jack allows for use with external noise-cancellation microphones. DS-150 comes with everything needed for automatic speech-to-text document creation - including IBM ViaVoice speech-to-text software and a headset that lets you dictate directly into your PC. Speech recognition technology "learns" your speech patterns as you work, and can convert your recordings to text at a faster speed than recordings dictated directly into the PC.

Amazon.com Product Description

The handy Olympus DS-150 digital voice recorder can slip easily into your pocket, purse, or briefcase. It stores up to 160 minutes of dictation and features PC connectivity and IBM ViaVoice voice-recognition software.

To set up the DS-150, you first insert two AAA batteries, then program the date and time to ensure that each message receives the correct date/time stamp when you record a message. Recording messages can be done in one of two modes: standard play (SP) or long play (LP). While LP offers more recording time, SP offers better quality, though both modes produce excellent results at a range of volumes. We also found that the quality was best when the recorder was held about 12 inches from the source.

The DS-150 has two folders that can each hold up to 99 messages. When you no longer need messages, you can erase them one at a time or erase an entire folder. It can also connect to your PC via a serial cable and convert spoken words into digital text using the included IBM ViaVoice software. With this feature, you can turn any dictation into an instant memo.

You can also make hands-free recordings with the DS-150's VCVA (variable-control voice actuator). With the VCVA turned on, the DS-150 begins recording when the microphone detects your voice and stops recording when you stop talking. This means you won't waste memory by recording silence when you pause during dictation, although you may lose brief moments of sound as the recorder starts and stops.

All in all, with its many features, PC connectivity, slim design, and easy-to-read LCD, we found the lightweight Olympus DS-150 digital voice recorder to be quite a nice device. --Megan Dugan

1 out of 5 stars Mine broke after one year of service.......2004-02-03

I'm not impressed at all.

2 out of 5 stars OK, but disappointing.......2001-07-16

There are some things that are worthwhile in the DS-150. It's small size and light weight is welcome, and it is quite easy to save sound files on my computer in WAV format (my primary criterion for purchase.)

However, it's user interface is simply one of the worst I have ever seen. Even after following the steps in the manual, I found myself unable to perform simple operations like setting the time without referring to the manual again. It makes the average VCR look good!

If you've seen an Olympus manual before, you know what to expect. Written in five languages, it's hard on the eyes, cryptic, badly organized, and full of tragic grammatical errors.

The sound quality isn't all that great either. Forget the ViaVoice software - it's a complete joke, unless you need inspiration for your strange dadaist poetry. How can anyone claim to provide useful "voice recognition" when it doesn't even get half the words correct? IBM and Olympus should hang their heads in shame for perpetrating this kind of hoax on the public.

I really needed a small voice recorder that interfaces with my computer, so I grit my teeth and suffer the pain of this inadequately designed product. But I'm not going to suffer in silence. When you're banging your head against the wall, it doesn't hurt so much when you can ... and moan about it.

4 out of 5 stars Totally worth it for my project........2001-03-06

This recorder has been great. I got it for two reasons: one for work -- the dictation software is great (and fun) and has helped me rapidly do a project that used to take weeks! The other reason: to create story CDs for my toddler. I have had friends read her favorites into the recorder, download and convert them, and then burn them onto CDs. Great for bedtime, downtime or driving. She loves it (and it drives the cat nuts!). The UI is difficult on the recorder, but I ignore all that and use the UI on the computer.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but software lacks Win2K support.......2000-12-26

On the whole, I am quite pleased with this recorder. The sound quality is good and it fits comfortably in the palm of your hand.

The controls require some attention to operate as they are small and closely spaced.

You need to read the manual carefully to understand how the system operates, but once this is done using the recorder seems straightforward enough.

The unit I received includes IBM Viavoice Millennium version 7 voice recognition software. One small problem: Windows 2000 is not supported, and the software does not work on my Windows 2000 system. (Windows 2000 is only officially supported by IBM Viavoice Millennium version 8, Professional edition.)

One thing I would like included is a small carry case to protect the unit. It does come with a carry strap.

1 out of 5 stars Very Poor Sonics, Overly Complex User Interface.......2000-09-08

I highly recommend the Sony or Radio Shack digital recorder product lines (even those priced under $50). They are extremely easy to use with quite acceptable sonics; and when compared from a price/performance perspective they are far superior to that of my DS 150 digital.

The complex "wheel-driven" menu user interface of the DS 150 is klunky at best (and confusing when accidently depressed which is quite easy to do), not designed for internet time, and the miniture play and shuffle keys are not well suited for human finger manipulation (the tactile feel, in particular, is missing which causes use problems). The sonics (both play and record) are poor from a price/performance perspective, and this was simply not expected from an Olympus high-end product.

I do not recommend purchase of the Olympus DS 150 (I already replaced it with a Sony digital, and use a small Optimus digital while jogging for its simple user interface). If you are still considering the DS 150 for purchase, however, I highly recommend that you first give it a shakedown cruise in a real store (trial it as you would expect to use it) -- buyer beware.

Excellent voice quality on this digital recorder. Saving files onto your PC is a snap with the serial or USB cables. Use the software that comes with it to edit the recordings and then save them to WAV files that can be played on any system. The data compression is excellent -- the sound files are small and can be emailed or put onto floppy disk.

The toggle switch on my new e805 broke the second time I moved it from WiFi to off. I sent the unit in under warrenty. Toshiba warrenty department said the mother board must be replaced to fix the toggle switch and is not covered under warrenty. They charged $125.00 to repair unit. I've bought a lot of Toshiba products, this will be the last.

I use it with navagation software and find it works way better than I expected.(travroute) E-mail works fine as does connecting to wireless internet services. I have had no problems with the screen. Not to mention I got lucky and paid $499.00 from COMPUSA. 2 THUMBS UP...Anyone interested in navagation software should give TRAVROUTE a try.

    2 out of 5 stars A very unhappy camper.......2004-02-05

I placed one of the earliest orders for this unit. The unit is fine, as far as that goes.
    Feb 2, 2004
Now I am having problems with the device (see appended comments below)

    March 18, 2004
More problems: the unit is now inoperable (see appended comments)

    Additional Comments as of 2004-02-08:
    1) The touch screen is now starting to malfunction. When I first turn the unit on I am getting many clicks (as if I am tapping the screen, which I am not). Also, later, if I even touch the case at the upper/right corner (not even near the actual display) the unit clicks (as if I am tapping the screen). Also upper sides of case sometimes.
    2) Status of Toshiba Order for critical supplies (screen overlays and replacement styli):
Shipping is Waiting to Pack Order (from Toshiba account status)
In other words, they still don't have the items. About March 10, 2004 the screen overlays FINALLY arrived. Not a bad turnaround for something critical - two months. However, the unit is now inoperable, the screen does not respond. Did a total system reset, was operable for awhile. Then, screen clicking like a geiger counter it has stopped responding again.

4 out of 5 stars Had to return mine, screen doesn't respond.......2004-02-03

When I first took it out of the box, it didn't, but I thought that was because the battery needed to be charged. I did finally get it setup and working. It was beautiful. Then the screen started acting weird, I'd tap the scroll bar and the today screen would pop back up, or I'd tape the "next" button and a different program would flash and then go away and then back to the today screen. Sometimes I'd turn it on and the screen wouldn't respond, then all of a sudden it did again. It was getting so bad that I hard reset and still couldn't get the screen to respond. I tried calling Toshiba, who only offers 90 days tech support, and they said they'd have someone call me back. A week later, I called them again and a week later I called a third time. Finally, I couldn't get the unit to respond at all, so I called J&R (where I purchased it via Amazon link) and they told me to send it back. They'd check it out and IF they found a problem they'd exchange it and refund my shipping fee. A lot of hassle for a very expensive machine, Toshiba is awful. I hope J&R comes through, as they agreed. They were nice on the phone, I think they will.
I did get my new, replacement from J&R. I was charged for it and I'm still waiting for them to credit me for the one I returned to them. The new one works MUCH better! It's a pleasure to use. I've only let the battery run down once; it stays pretty good, 4 or 5 days with normal use. This screen works the way it should. It responds well and it's really quick. I restored from a backup on my CF card and was up and running in seconds. I really love it. I like the CF and SD card slots and the fast processor. I like it much better than the iPAQ 5455 I had.

    1 out of 5 stars unreliable!.......2004-01-30

i got my unit and as soon as i took it out of the box, i found that the screen would not respond to the stylus. so, i could not use it past the initialization stage! this unit has all sorts of problems that you can read about on forums, such as:

    - screen taps not responding
    - noise coming from the unit
    - batteries not holding charge

although i was aware of bad experiences some people had, i really wanted the vga screen and thought i would try it out anyway...

turned out to be a big waste of time, since i had to wait about 3 weeks for this thing to get off back order!

i have purchased all kinds of technology items and have never had anything with such a major defect upon opening it; this is just unacceptable.
