Great drive for the money.......2007-08-12
I have used this for a couple of years now and it works really well. I tad louder than I expected.
The Firewire works well but isn't noticeably faster than USB. Ill just assume it is faster and better quality.
The build quality is excellent and set up is as easy as plugging it in. The back up software included is about worthless. Very difficult to configure and never seems to work as expected. I deleted the software and just use the Microsoft software to back up.
The USB port on the front is very handy and much appreciated.
All in all no complaints. Works as it should without a hick up for over two years now.

only had it for a month or so but it's working well so far on a mac (mac book pro). what i really like is the fact that it does have a automatic sleep mode that it goes into after a while of not using it, even if it's plugged into my computer. As long as your not accessing or working with a file from the external hard drive for a short while, it will go into sleep mode. This keeps it from continuously running and getting hot. It does not get hot at all and I sometimes am running it for over 12 hours straight. only complaint is that the power cord pulls from the back of the drive really easily. makes ya a little nervous but otherwise no complaints.
Not very Mac friendly..........2007-03-16
When the USB cord is connected to the WD external hard drive, my computer will not sleep properly. The screen goes black and the internal hard drive spins down but the fan continues and the lights never begin to pulse as when the computer is in sleep mode. It won't wake from this state and the only thing that I can do is hold the power button until the computer shuts off. This only happens when the USB cord is connected, it doesn't matter if the WD hard drive is on or off. Firewire doesn't cause this problem and I use it for data transfer but I need the USB for the memory card reader.
Also, The WD hard drive won't shut off unless I push and hold the power button. I eject the disk from my computer as intructed but the problem remains. When I push the power button on the WD drive the light flashes for a moment then remains on. I never transferred data to the drive so I don't think that it is transferring data when I try to shut it off.
It sometimes won't show up on my desktop after waking from sleep mode. I have to go into utilities and unmount then re-mount the drive in order for it to show up.
Besides all that it seems to work fine. The software is terrible so I just manually tranfer data to it.
I have emailed Western Digital about this but haven't gotten a response from them.

The drive arrive in short order, no delays and it worked right out of the box with no issues. I've already backed up our ministry's pc, it took very little time to do so, the drive is fast. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good drive at an affordable price.

Very Displeased.......2007-04-11
I got this drive for back-ups about a year and a half ago and now the drive is starting to fail. It creates weird duplicate folders, says things are copied over but are not there. I had issues mounting it on my Mac that I just repalced and at the time I blamed my eMac but now I think it was the drive itself.
I just replaced it with a more reliable LaCie 2D extreme and crossing my fingers that the LaCie will be a more solidly reliable drive.

I bought the hard drive to keep my home video. I have it for over two months now. So far I have no problem with it. I downloaded video files from Mini-DV and edit it into movies and save into DVD. I would like to keep all my video in hard disk,as well as in DVD. I would get another one when this one is full. Next one may be 1 TB.

I bought this drive in August of 2004, never had a single problem.
PROS: Very fast data transfer, hi-tech looking, real plug-N-play, very quiet.
CONS: This drive does get warm to the touch, no power switch on the drive.
I will be buying another WD external drive in the next few days.
Ugly and Unreliable.......2005-03-31
Failed after a year and is just about the ugliest thing you could bring into your home. The pink & blue lighting is obnoxious. Would maybe be acceptable if the drive were half-way reliable, but it isn't. For me, it failed just after 1 year of use and is out of warranty. Stay away!

Bad electrical, died within 4 months.......2007-09-19
It's a great drive as long as it works. Mine started behaving erratically and I thought the OS wasn't recognizing it. After much troublshooting, the drive told me what the problem was. It's the case, the connection to the drive inside. I am buying a new case and hoping I can still use the drive.
So my buying the extended warranty was a waste of money. I can return the drive, but I lose 200G of data. I void the warranty by opening up the case and trying to save the drive, but it's worth the gamble.
I bought 2 of these, months apart, and they both developed problems. I loved them while they lasted, but I got lemons.
poor customer service, buttons don't work, incompatible with vista.......2007-07-11
I have owned the dual-option combo drive for about a year. The buttons to back up have never worked. I see that WD is aware of this problem. I just bought a new computer only to learn that the combo drive is not compatible with Vista. I've contacted WD and they have offerred only useless automated replies. Phone support is only availble for $15!!!! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT for 3 reasons:
1. Bad customer service (no phone)
2. Buttons don't work (unless you download a fix)
3. Incompatible with Vista

I've tried twice via email to get support from WD and as usual, they're putting the blame on Microsoft rather than providing a fix. Vista doesn't recognize the drive. Yep, time to switch brands!

Hook the set up with a DTV receiver for full-resolution HD reception through its DVI (digital visual interface) or component-video terminals. Onboard DCDi line doubling (provided by the video-technology leader Faroudja) doubles the number of scan lines for a cinemalike effect, eliminating jagged lines and artifacts along diagonal lines and bringing all input sources to high-definition 1080i resolution.
The C32V46 performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. Digital video mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.
Special 16:9/4:3 aspect-ratio correction lets you view feature-length movies in either their original widescreen format (16:9) or in regular TV format (4:3), with no loss of resolution--the set devotes all available lines to the letterboxed image, wasting none on the black bars above and below. Single-tuner PIP (picture-in-picture) lets you watch a TV station and a video input simultaneously.
A 3D Y/C comb filter combines the adaptive digital processing of a 3-line digital comb filter with 3-D motion detection. This eliminates hanging dots and color noise on stationary images, as well as reducing "dot crawl" and overall picture noise. Scan velocity modulation dynamically varies the scanning speed of the electron beam to create clear, well defined images for the sharpest picture possible. Zenith's Dynamic Focus aligns the red, green, and blue color beams in the center of the screen to ensure accurate side-to-side focus.
Inputs include the above-mentioned DVI digital in, 4 composite-video and 3 S-video/composite-video sources (including stereo audio for each), and 2 high-definition component-video inputs. A set of convenient front-panel inputs (with S-video) fosters easy hookups with a camcorder or gaming console, and a set of composite-video/stereo analog-audio outputs lets you route a signal to a VCR, DVR, or surround receiver.

I have had this TV for about three years. Overall it works fine, however it does make some high-pitched buzzing static noises which I find unbearable. I saw on some of the other posts that changing the cables might have an effect. I tried this and in the process, I noticed that just applying pressure on certain places on the back of the TV enables me to reduce the static noise. I noticed two screws on the back of the TV just above the AV connector panel. I loosened each 1/4 turn and then fully tightened each one. The buzzing noise went away. I hope it stays away. If it comes back, I will try this process again and maybe move this heavy beast and search out other screws. This appears to be related to weakened RF grounding that gets improved by loosening and retightening the screws.
Incessant buzzing noise.......2006-01-08
This TV has a horrible buzzing noise that you can hear constantly even with the volume turned up. Even when the TV is in the standby mode (no picture) you can hear the buzz. The only time it doesn't is if you turn the set completely off. I would not recommend buying this TV and am sending it back.
It only lasted 1 year.......2004-11-01
We bought this television 10/29/03 ... exactly one year later it died. The screen is completely black and the sound chops in and out. I really would expect more out of Zenith. The pictured started to fail after it was about 10 months old ... squiggly lines on and off. Thank goodness we purchased the optional service plan. Otherwise, we would be stuck with the repairs. I'm hoping this one is just a lemon. Otherwise, we will be having it repaird annually ... ridiculous!
