Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Interlaced composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

The VCR section offers 4 heads (for clear slow-motion and stop-action features) and stereo sound. The deck's 19-micron video heads maintain clarity during recording or playback in EP (extended play) mode, auto digital tracking adjusts for optimal picture settings for every tape you load, and auto clock set maintains the correct time and even adjusts for daylight savings. You can't program the unit to record at specific times, but it does come with a handy Instant Recording button.

For the simplest hookup with your TV, you can use a single RCA composite-video connection to handle both DVD and VCR outputs. If you want a higher-quality connection from the DVD player, you can use a component- or S-video cable to an additional input on your TV (the VCR image requires a composite-video or RF connection with your TV). You can choose between an optical and a coaxial digital-audio output to feed a surround-sound signal to your Dolby Digital- or DTS-decoding audio/video receiver.

If you don't have a surround receiver or 6-channel speaker setup, you can still make every movie night the ultimate experience: the unit simulates surround sound through 2 speakers (even the stereo speakers on your TV).

Zenith XBR413 Won't play DVD.......2006-10-23

We bought this a year ago and all was ok until now. I have some DVDs that I have played in this before and now they won't play. The audio plays but not the video. The disk plays on other machines so it's ok. I called Zenith but they couldn't help me.

BUYERS BEWARE - THIS ITEM IS A DISASTER.......2005-10-27

My boyfriend got me this for my birthday about a year ago and I loved it at first. Now it freezes and ultimately shuts off every 2-10 minutes for both the VCR and DVD player. I've reset it, unplugged it, tried different media but after doing some research there are plenty of people with this problem. I'm so frustrated because I will have to pay a fortune to pack and ship it to get it fixed and in my opinion it should work perfectly since it's still practically new!!! I know he paid a lot for it and it's dissapointing that such a great gift idea didn't last. I can't decide whether to pay $75 just to SEE if they can fix it or buy a similar item from a different manufacturer. I'd stay away from this one. If there were a zero stars option that's what it would've gotten.

VCR tapes won't play - Best Buy Blows!.......2005-02-20

I bought this item with the Best Buy Performance Service Plan (PSP). I was told that if I had problems with the unit, I could bring it back to be repaired or replaced FOR FREE as part of the PSP! Well, you guessed it... I had problems. I brought it in because it would not play VCR tapes. My main reason for purchasing this item was to convert VCR tapes to DVD. I reluctantly let BEST BUY ship my item to their service Center. They called within one month to say my XBR413 was repaired and ready for me to pick up. Against my better judgement, I simply picked it up at the BEST BUY store WITHOUT asking the "Geek Oncall" to verify that it played tapes properly. When I got home... YOU GUESSED IT... It would not play tapes SURPRIZE!! I then drove BACK TO BEST BUY, and spent MORE time AGAIN waiting for the Manager to tell me that he wanted to send it out again. I let 'em do it again (against my better judgement). That was today (2/19/05). I'm hoping at this point that they just can't fix it, and I hope they will refund my money! I'll demand it next time. This product is a dud, and should be smashed on the floor of the store in front of everyone! Stay tuned for the next update.

zenith xbr413.......2005-01-28

This dvd burner has not worked sense the day i bought it.
When i contacted support, i was told that they knew there was a problem and they sent me a disc to install that they said would fix it. It did not fix it. I have not been able to get any help sense then... and now they tell me that my warranty is up.
I will never buy another zenith product again.
I wish i had taken the burner back to best buy instead of trusting zenith support.

DVD-VHS recorder.......2004-11-01

I bought this and had trouble at first making the dvd's play on my other dvd players and computer. I then realized( thru 24 hour tech support) that I didnt finalize it correctly and now they work on all my dvd players and comp[uters . My complaint was they didnt all finalize easily. Some did, others had trouble so I returned it, as tech support said my player was defective. But I think if you got one that worked well and finalized correctly, it is a fabulous and reasonably priced item to have for burning old home videos and kids video.

I've had this MP3 player since probably year 2000 and it STILL works surprisingly. Four years and it still works! I had a few problems...when I upgraded my PC to Windows XP. The drivers didn't support it so I had to search around and finally found RealOne had the Rio500 support. Well it being year 2004...there's iPods and these MP3 players that hold 5000 songs while this holds maximum 20. Well back then it was cool.

This is a durable little MP3 player. I have had mine for about 4 years and it's still going strong. I also had the issue of the software not working with XP. Rio audio products are now owned by Digital Networks, but there is little to no help at all on their website for the Rio 500. Anyway, that is my only complaint. There is a great website called Rioworld.org that has several different freeware programs available that will let your Rio 500 work with XP. There is also a couple of recovery files in case you get a gray checkerboard screen (problem that can occur if there is a power failure during upload of a song).

To the person who can't transfer music to their Rio 500 under Windows XP, check out Sveta Portable Audio from http://www.dbpoweramp.com/. I've been using it since I got a new PC with XP installed and it works great, much simpler interface compared to the supplied Rio software.

Good player, terrible company.......2003-11-13

The player is great, small, light and easy to use. You must either use a Mac (works great with iTunes), the Riositude program (freeware, google for it)or win98. I use mine whenever Im outside:running, yardwork whatever. You'll need to replace the earbuds but if you buy a used one do you really want to use someone else's earbuds? The serial number will rub off so write it down as another reviewer suggested.

Also, if you buy a used one, make sure you get the USB cable. It's proprietary and you can't get it anywhere. (Refer to rio support coments below.)

Customer support at rio (or sonic blue or whatever they call themselves this week) is a joke. I will not buy another product of any type from them ever.

This product is excellent!! i have one for 3 years and have never been happier. When i upgraded to xp the softwear dis not work! so i did a bit of research. there is a program called music jukebox which you can download at www.musicex.com/mediajukebox/ you download this program and then you go to settings/plug in manager and then handheld. it takes you o a site where you find the rio 500 and then download the plug-in. after that it works great!! i have not had a problem with it since!! I hope this helps all the other people who have upgraded to windows xp and found themselves stuck

A very good thing to own.......2002-04-28

I bought my rio500 about 2 years ago and it has done nothing but make me happy. With the 64MB it has already, thats just the right amount of music for a nice car trip, but if you are like me and need a lot of music, then you can buy an inexpensive smart media expansion card. I had many cards and could have about 5 hours of music all in one pocket...I enjoy how the screen says the title of the song, the amount of time that has passed, and the battery life. I didnt seem to have a problem with the included software, except that its just a demo. But recently i guess i got a virus of some sort, so if i want to format my media card, it would lock up my computer, and i would have to turn off my computer at the tower, which is not good. There are other kinds of software for it that you can download for free online, so please dont let the bad software come in your way from purchasing it. Please read the other reviews because i read them and some have some good points. As for the ones that say that the froze and stopped working, well, thats only if you abuse it too much. My friend had an identical player, and he dropped it into pools and lakes, dropped it down stairs, and other horrible things, so it froze finally.... so, if you take good care of your player, it will serve you well. I hope i helped!

Great MP3 player.......2002-03-19

I purchased this from Audible for 99 bucks about 13 months ago. As an audio book device this is a wonderful player. Upgrade with another 64 MB Smart Media card and you'll get about 9 hours of very good quality spoken word. As a music player it is good but not great. Not enough memory for more than an hour or two of good quality music. The 500 has a quality feel to it that other players do not. It has the look and feel of a first generation device that was over built and probably wasn't intended to make a large profit. Very small, slips into a pocket and is rugged enough to stand up to a fair amount of abuse. Great battery life compared to a minidisc player I used to use - at least 12 honest hours of playback on a single AA battery. Subsequent Rio mp3 players are bigger and aren't as elegant as the 500. Forget the included software. Download RIOsitude from hotfiles.com. A free program that is intuitive to use, fast and reliable. As good as this player is the Apple iPod has established a new benchmark for portable players. The Apple uses a 5 GB microdrive which hasn't proven itself yet in terms of reliability but is certainly a step in the right direction. Bottom line is that the 500 is a supremely good audio book device, a great spoken word device, a good music player but too little memory for more than a couple hours of high quality audio.

Some very major flaws, but otherwise a fun toy.......2001-12-04

First, the good: lightweight and TINY, take it to the gym, or on a plane, and it won't be a nuisance. If you download a firmware upgrade from rioport.com a lot of the bugs are fixed and the interface is improved. Now the BAD: headphones included are crap -ditch them and get new ones right away. Holds about 15 songs on its internal memory - get firmware upgrade to allow you to plug in a 64MB smartmedia card. Everywhere you look it says you can only plug in another 32 but don't listen to that. All in all, I love this thing, its compact size makes it great.

Bad product.......2001-08-25

I bought this last year and it was working fine for about 6 month. Then it suddenly froze and didn't react to anything. I spend several days trying to fix it. I downloaded a program from the website that is supposed to fix that problem. It turned out to be useless. Of course they do not have a tech support you can call. So after a lot of e-mails I was allowed to return the product and got it back after 3 weeks. It was fine for about 2 month and then the same thing happened. In summary this is a bad product manufactured by a terrible company with bad tech support. Don't make the mistake to buy it.
