The VCR section offers 4 heads (for clear slow-motion and stop-action features) and stereo sound. The deck's 19-micron video heads maintain clarity during recording or playback in EP (extended play) mode, auto digital tracking adjusts for optimal picture settings for every tape you load, and auto clock set maintains the correct time and even adjusts for daylight savings. A handy Instant Recording button commences recording with a single touch.

For the simplest hookup with your TV, you can use a single RCA composite-video connection to handle both DVD and VCR outputs. If you want a higher-quality connection from the DVD player, you can use a component- or S-video cable to an additional input on your TV (the VCR image requires a composite-video or RF connection with your TV). You can choose between an optical and a coaxial digital-audio output to feed a surround-sound signal to your Dolby Digital- or DTS-decoding audio/video receiver.

If you don't have a surround receiver or 6-channel speaker setup, you can still make every movie night the ultimate experience: the unit simulates surround sound through 2 speakers (even the stereo speakers on your TV).

Two years later and I still love it.......2006-09-09

My wife bought this two years ago to replace using my ps2 as a dvd player. We use it at least once a week and we have been very pleased. We haven't had any problems with the VCR and the DVD player stopped working for about a week, but came back and we haven't had any problems since. Plus, since it's progressive scan it looks great on an HD TV.

avoid this machine!!.......2006-01-12

We have owned this dvd/vcr combo player for about 9 months now. It is awful! The DVD player in particular is very poor. Often, the video will freeze, but the audio will continue and it will "skip". Also, many DVD's do not played properly. One movie that has the deleated scenes added back in will stop playing whenever it comes to an extra scene. Other times it will continue to play as it is supposed to. Also, home made DVD's with multiple chapters will sometimes play only the first chapter, sometimes not. On my dauaghters Baby Einstein, it will often only play the Spanish version and not allow us to access the DVD menu to play it in English. Other times it will. It is so inconsistant that it is unreliable. The VCR seems to function properly, although it is not used as often.

Worked good for a while.......2005-12-24

I bought this item in March of 2005 and never had any problems. Until about November of 2005. Now when I put in a dvd it just keeps skipping around like the discs are scratched and they are perfectly brand new DVD's. I put in one of those dvd cleaner discs that have little brushes underneath them to clean the eye. Well that isn't the problem I guess because it didn't help any.
I called zenith and they said this item has a swap option...they will send me free shipping labels to send it to them and they will swap it with a new one for 45$. I might just use 45$ towards another stand alone dvd player since the vcr on it still works. I really don't want to risk having to get it replaced again.

Poor Quality.......2005-07-18

We've had 3 of these combos and none of them have worked properly. The first one ate a video tape after a couple months and because it was still under warranty I sent it back. They sent us a new one and the vcr in that one quit working after 2 or 3 movies. The 3rd one they sent us is refurbished(?!??!!) and the DVD player doesn't work. This time when I call them I will get a refund and find a better brand. If you're looking for a vcr/dvd combo that lasts, I'd certainly look elsewhere.

You can play VCDs on this player but you need to reprogram the DVD player first. Just follow these instructions:

1. Power on the DVD player with no disk in the drive
2. Press "PAUSE" on the remote
3. Enter "1472" on the remote

This should bring up a screen with rows of numbers. If not, then repeat the above steps from the beginning.

4. Press the UP arrow three times
5. Change the number 45 to 47
6. Press "ENTER" (the display should flash briefly)
7. Press "RETURN"
8. Power the player off and then back on
Play a VCD!

Relyable, efficient, and highly intuitive........2007-08-17

My family and I just recently bought an RV that we fixed up so we could go camping in it together. My father mentioned buying a Laptop for us to bring along on our trips, but we didn't have much money to be spending on Laptop computers that can cost in excess of 2000 dollars if purchased new!
So I set out to find a cheap, relyable Laptop that suited my needs.
All I wanted was a simple Laptop with an Intel Celeron processor for quick speed, Windows XP so I could easily download my digital camera software, the option to use dialup, Broadband, or a WAP internent connection, (considering RV parks all use a different form of Internet connection) and a DVD ROM drive so we could watch movies on it. (Quite a tall order when it comes to finding a cheap computer...)
I had originally ordered the HP XE3 Notebook computer, but the seller I ordered it from was out of stock on the XE3, and offered me this one. Since it had everything I was looking for, I accepted, and I'm glad that I did!
This computer suits my needs quite well, and I only paid 310 bucks for it!

PROS: Nice, big screen! (about 13 & a 1/2 inches)
The trackball in the center of the keypad is much more user-friendly than your standard touchpad! (my fingers get sweaty and it still works)
Intel Celeron M Processor downloads files and opens pages quickly without the wait!
Windows XP makes downloading new software, navigating menus, and tuning the R31 to your personal taste a snap.
Multiple options for Internet access, and built-in wireless saves you from having to buy alot of expensive accessories!

CONS: The speakers on the R31 aren't too powerful, so if you plan on listening to music while surfing the web or watching DVDs on the go, then I recommend buying a small pair of speakers to go with it.

50/50: Not a whole lot of storage capacity, but more than enough download standard software such as, photo shop, webcam, printer, etc.

Overall: An easy to use, relyable, efficient, and highly intuitive little Notebook computer! Great for watching movies, listening to music, and surfing the web on the go!

Expensive, but worth it..........2007-08-17

I recently bought a refurbished IBM R31 ThinkPad Notebook, and the battery inside was on it's last leg. It couldn't hold a charge for longer than 42 minutes, and I was planning on taking it with me on a trip, so I had to buy a new battery for it and fast!
Finding a replacement battery wasn't easy, namely because I wanted to get a battery that matched the Model numbers on the battery I already had, (02K6822/02K6823) and since it warned right on the back of the battery that using the wrong battery could result in fire of explosion!
After alot of searching, I found this battery, and in the product details it said it would work with a 02K6822 model battery type.
This battery works great, and I haven't had any problems with it so far!

PROS: Compadible with all ThinkPad battery types!
A great replacement battery for your IBM ThinkPad R30/R31!
Longer life than the standard ThinkPad Battery!

CONS: ThinkPad runs slighty hotter with this battery installed.
Battery fits more snuggly into the ThinkPad than your standard battery, so it doesn't lock into place as securely as the standard one does...

Overall: A good replacement battery for your IBM ThinkPad.
The longer battery life results in less charges and longer useage, great for business or surfing the web.
Although the battery is expenisive, the longer battery life and peace of mind make it worth the price.

5 times better than Bose, for a fifth of the price... Sweet!.......2005-02-26

The specs are there - +/-3db from 25-25K, and it delivers. Hooked it up with an OnkyoSR502 and it was amazing. I knew I could get more and so have hooked it up now to an OnkyoSR601, and it's even better. Just starting to invest in my music system and I am very happy with the start. I definitely see myself persisting with these and upgrading my receiver/cd player. True to their Brit origin, the mid-range is sweet, with no ear-bleeding at all. I am definitely getting more than my money's worth here. This is state-of-the-art unless you are talking of higher end Missions and Polks and perfect to start off with.

Things to note:
Set crossover frequency in your receiver to 120 or higher - bookshelf speakers have freq response 120-25K
They supply audio cables, but I will recommend using thicker cables. I changed to THX certified Monster cables and it's sounding a few hundred bucks richer.
Get a nice receiver. This baby can take it all. I noticed a lot of Yamahas mentioned in this section, but get a Yamaha only if you are paying a lot of money (close to $1000). Yamaha receivers in the sub-500 category are not that good, though their higher end stuff are the very best in the category, along with the Denons and the Onkyos.
The bass lacks the oomph, so you will be mightily disappointed if you are into hip-hop/heavy bass. You might want to plug in another subwoofer instead. But, rock/classics/jazz are at their sweetest ever.

Bottomline: I would have given it 5 stars even if it retailed for a thousand bucks.

PS - If at all they matter, they look handsome too.

Great Big Mini System!.......2005-01-21

I bought this system two weeks ago and I have been very impressed. My original goal was to replace two huge 3 foot high Infinity tower speakers that were taking up too much space in our living room. I wanted something that would be more discrete, aesthetic and work with a home theater system without losing the fine sound I was used too. These did all that and improved the sound! I have them mated to a Yamaha RX-V750 which is overkill but needed to hook up my phonograph. The surround speakers are the biggest I have seen for a "mini" system at about 6 inches high and deep but still small enough to hide on a shelf or mantle place. The Wharfedale's look so stylish you might not want to hide them. I've tried different placements and they definitely work best when placed at ear level but still work well when place in a hap hazard "hidden" manner. I have run the gamut of my music collection including the Beatles, Beethoven, Nick Cave, The Clash, Chris Isaac, Evanescence and Led Zepplin and the system works flawlessly. While a Bose system I listened to seemed to have higher highs and lower lows the Wharfdale seems to have better mid range and a more accurate all around sound, especially noticeable when I play my favorite classical music. I have played two DVD's Spiderman 2 and Return of the King and both left grins on all who watched and listened.

One warning is that these are 4 ohm speakers so make sure your system can handle that. Yamaha is one of the few A/V receivers rated for 4 ohm.

Wharfedale's web site only honors warranties if you buy from three authorized web sites including Amazon. I purchased from one of the other two and saved $200!

BTW I have a 25 year old set of Wharfdale bookshelf speakers in my office that work as good as the day I bought them. I am confident the MovieStar 70's will last just as long.

Real Hi-fi in Surround at a Great Price.......2004-09-30

Having had systems from bargain-bucket to US$25k true audiophile, as well as a biais for quality and simplicity- this speaker system is a dream.

Realistically the only competition is a similar-priced Mission (or spend about 4 times more for an inferior, somewhat pretty, incrediably well-marketed, but fuzzy-sounding, headache-inducing Bose)- no contest.

Used with bargain ( not care much about TV!) Toshiba V392 VHS/DVD combo; bargain Yamaha Receiver RX-V350S (5x100 watt)(the 750 a total powerhouse musical dream but unecessary); and good 12 gauge speaker cable. Much better than a crowded movie-theatre with overblown fuzzy sound!

What/s good:quality cable binding posts, reasonable size satellites and good front and powered 100w subwoofer, attractive/modern look, very musical, movies sound great, great precision and timing and instrument separation, well manufactured, good price, great *bang per buck*. Note- the cheaper Wharfedale 60 Movie-stars are very inferior for not much less cash...

Nothing bad; still initially the matched speaker stands appeared lightweight but fine, and there is the intimidating competition from Mission speakers, or a pair of *true* great hi-fi speakers at twice the price (best-bets: Mission,B&W, Monitor Audio or Wharfedale) .

Overall, another Wharfedale winner.

I wanted a home theater speaker system, that was good with movies and music too! I listened to Polk 6700 speakers (very good) JBL 160 (nice) Energy 5.2 (very nice) Athena (ok+) and Wharfedale Movie Star 70's (awesome)! The biggest difference was the music end of the spectrum! All of the mentioned systems were very good to excellent for movie/tv viewing, but ranged from good, to adequate, to so-so on music! Except the Wharfedales, which were excellent for theater use, and awesome on music, probably due to the fact they are a bit larger than most! No tubby lower midrange, or ear bleeding, thin highs! Bass was rendered very well too! A great value, and they are decor freindly.
